Crime LineBy Senior Sgt Alan Grindell

A snap shot of the week that has been;

Police attended the following vehicle accidents; a vehicle lost control on the Wanaka - Luggate Highway rolled and come to a rest on a fence post.

A female crashed her vehicle on the Maungawera Hill, fled the scene and was located by Police near by; the driver failed the roadside breath test and is facing four charges including failing an excess breath test - 877 mgm, resisting arrest, failing to accompany, and careless driving.

In another incident a vehicle rear ended another on Cardrona Valley Road near Golf Course Road.

An overseas driver's vehicle travelling from Makarora to Haast travelled onto the left hand verge, the driver was unable to correct and the vehicle sunk on the soft ground and dropped 100 metes into a ravine. Staff who attended would like to thank the passers by and the Makarora Fire Brigade who assisted this family.

A male was charged with Operating a Vehicle with Sustained Loss of Traction. He now has a court appearance and the vehicle was impounded for 28 days.

A female was charged with failing an excess breath test - 618 mgm.

A drunk male trying to gain entry to a bar was arrested for breaching his current bail conditions and possession of cannabis.

A male tourist was arrested for assault after he slapped and spat at a doorman.

Two males were picked up and looked after at the Police Station after being located separately in a state of gross intoxication.

We have received reports of a number of thefts and if you have any information that could help, please call the station on 443 7272 or call Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

Between15/09/11 and 19/09/2011 a trailer, registration number P558F, was stolen from a section located near Kane and Watkins Road in the Hawea area. This property has been targeted by thieves previously, have you seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area?

On 6/09/11 a vehicle left unlocked with the keys was taken from Hunter Crescent driven a short distance and then crashed through the fence of another property on Hunter Crescent.

On 19/09/11 a jet ski was stolen from outside a dwelling on Sunrise Bay Road.

We are receiving ongoing reports of graffiti; person/s have targeted the Wanaka Tennis club, an address on Roche Road and also Gordon Road. Please keep the reports coming in. Staff recently successfully arrested two out of town taggers who are currently facing combined charges.

Lastly, Wanaka Search and Rescue and Police conducted another search on the weekend for the young German kayker missing on Lake Hawea. Sadly to date, despite hundreds of hours searching, he has not been found. Until further information or new evidence is received further searches are on hold. On behalf of the Police SAR team I personally would like to thank all of you who have been involved in this search, on foot, by boat and/or have shown your support by baking for the searchers. It is very much appreciated.

Have a good safe week.

LUCK OF THE IRISH - is an ironic (sarcastic) phrase. The Irish have been a spectacularly unlucky race historically. The luck of the Irish is historically “bad luck” - their emigrants often being disliked, treated badly, and poverty stricken. The “luck of the Irish” is now often misused to imply good luck. Irish successes in America were often doubted, as Americans didn’t think them capable, so success was termed luck, hence the “luck of the Irish” - no doubt helped by Irish successes on the goldfi elds and silver mines.KIP MCGRATH WANAKA is running an exam preparation course during the October holidays. THE KOKODA TRACK PAPUA NEW GUINEA

April-October 2012

One of the top 10 treks of the world. This track was made famous during WW11 and still bares the scars of a fierce campaign.

The long days include river crossings, steep and gradual ascends and descends. The 96 kilometre trek is predominately through rain forest. Usually conditions are wet and slippery as rain can be expected on most days. Temperatures range from 24-30 degrees Celsius during the day and 16-24 degrees celcius at night.
