St John Wanaka is raising funds to purchase 2 new Lifepak 15 Cardiac Monitor/Defibrillators and a new practice manikin.

The current Lifepak 12s are about 7 years old and are used on a daily basis to monitor a patient’s heart rhythm, blood pressure and heart rate etc. The new Lifepaks have several new features such as keeping track of a patient’s temperature and the capability to transmit ECG’s directly to a specialist in hospital for advanced interpretation.

To help keep the staff at St John current with their Clinical Procedures, a new Advanced Life Support manikin is needed. Such a manikin can simulate a vast variety of cases that ambulance crews may encounter, from cardiac arrest to breathing difficulties and can even simulate vomiting. This type of manikin is invaluable and will

be used to train staff at our medical centres, fire brigade and business’ where there is an External Automated Defibrillator (AED) on the premises.

The cost of a Defibrillator is about $22,000 each, and the Manikin will cost around $25,000.

St John has received $10,998 from the Central Lakes Trust and is currently waiting for replies from other local trusts.

While the local St John Area committee will fund any deficit, it would welcome any contributions from the people of Wanaka. Unlike the other Emergency Services, St John receives no funding for equipment from the government and must rely on the local community’s generosity.

Any donations can be made at our station or posted to St John, 4 Link Way Wanaka.

PROGRAMME FOR OCTOBER 2009

UPPER CLUTHA TRAMPING CLUB - WINTER WALKS 2014 Winter walks take place on the 1st Saturday and 3rd Sunday of each month, finishing on 21st September. Interested people need only to turn up on the day at 8.30 am at the Pembroke Car Park. They must bring lunch (including thermos), warm weatherproof clothing, sunglasses, sturdy boots and car pool petrol donation. All walks are graded easy-medium, usually no longer than 5 hours and within a one hour drive from Wanaka. The destination is often only decided a few days prior in order to accommodate weather and conditions. Winter walks are quite sociable trips and we have been known to stop for a coffee on the way home. Non-members are always welcome. On Saturday 3rd May we are having an” Open Day” for the Club. We will be tramping/walking to the Meg Hut in the Cardrona Valley. This is a walk of 3-4 hours to the hut where we will have lunch of hot soup, buns, billy tea and biscuits supplied by the Club. The full summer programme starts in October. Club nights occur on the second Wednesday of each month at the Wanaka Yacht Club on Lakeside Road, Wanaka. For further information about WINTER WALKS or the Upper Clutha Tramping Club in general, please contact Karen Marinkovic – President and Winter Walks Coordinator : tel. 443 7409 or refer to the club website www.uctcwanaka.blogspot.co.nz.

Winter vehicle checks should be underway (tyres, brakes, headlights, anti-freeze & put tyre chains into the boot). With road conditions changing, ensure following distances are 50% greater (the 2 second rule becomes the 3 second rule) and travelling speeds should be reduced relative to the road conditions.

Wanaka Police will continue to target those not wearing seatbelts, speed, drivers using cell phones, and intersection behaviour.
