Much of the building industry still requires and relies upon CAD based and sheet-centric project information delivery. The National BIM Standard-United States® (NBIMS-US™) doesn’t define graphical standards so the United States National CAD Standard® (NCS©) is an indispensable reference standard for the foreseeable future. As CAD and BIM are different workflows, it is necessary to better define and understand the relationship between the two standards.
Standards Philosophy
Standards are like Referees:
• You need them to keep the game fair and honest.
• When they do a great job, you don’t notice them.
• You don’t want them deciding the game – no one buys a ticket to see the refs.
NCS© Reference Standard
• If the NCS© is a CAD standard, why is it needed for BIM use?
• How is the NCS© related to NBIMS-USTM?
• How are the standards currently being used?
• What can we expect in future revisions?
NCS© Reference Standard
Sheet-Centric project deliverable drivers:
• Permitting/Review Process
• Practitioner Liability Concerns
• Owner/Client requirements
• Established CAD/PDF/Paper delivery process

Standards are needed for both
information exchange AND graphical output

NBIMS-USTM & NCS© Relationship
NBIMS-USTM references to NCS©
NCS© is an indispensable reference for NBIMS-US™.

NBIMS-USTM & NCS© Relationship
NBIMS-USTM V2 5.2 Minimum BIM
Graphical Information - Since all drawing output should at this point be National CAD Standard compliant, we are making this a requirement for a minimum BIM. This demonstrates that standards are being considered, when possible.
NCS© Introduction
The NCS© is identified as “One Element of a Larger Framework” and references NBIMS-USTM as another element.
NCS©: What Applies to BIM? • Sheet information
• Set
• Identification
• Types
• Sequence
• Layout
NCS©: What Applies to BIM?
• Layers (import or export)
• Schedules
• Terms and Abbreviations
NCS©: What Applies to BIM?
• Line Widths
• Basic Annotation
Missing Pieces?
CAD and BIM use require different workflows and methodology. The standards have been written specifically for each format so there are naturally gaps when attempting to integrate the two workflows.
Implementation Challenges
• Not all NCS© content is applicable to BIM. – Some Symbols
– Some Line types
– Some naming/filing conventions
• Exported Data may not be fully compliant.
• Project stakeholders may not recognize various levels of compliance.
– Required vs. Optional or Recommended.
– Standards vs. Guidelines.
Bridging the Gap
Current efforts to bridge the gap between the standards
• BIM Implementation Section balloted for NCS© V6.
• NCS© balloted as a reference standard for NBIMS-USTM V3.
• Introductory Relationship Statement developed for NBIMS-USTM V3.

Next Steps
• Evaluate revisions to NCS© V6 and NBIMS-USTM V3
• NCS© BIM Ad Hoc Task Team to further develop the NCS© BIM Implementation Section.
• Get involved: more practitioners are needed for effective standards development.
