You may have heard of an announcement by the Education Minister that Monday 25 January

2016 would be a Student Free Day. This will be the case for most students at Padua, however

Year 5 and 7 students will begin school on the 25 January with their usual Orientation Program.

School will begin on Wednesday 27 January 2016 for all other students.

As you are aware, the students finish next Friday 27 November at 3.10pm. I want to thank all

parents for their support of their sons and the College throughout 2015. I hope that you all

have a wonderful holiday break and that you enjoy the peace of a Holy Christmas. Best wishes

for the New Year and I look forward to your returning to celebrate sixty years of Franciscan edu-

cation in 2016.

Well, what a year it has been! Pope Francis is into his stride of reforming the church. This is not without its difficulties. The Pope's chal-lenge is to balance two different models of the church. It is about the two pillars on which the church rests - the Kingdom and the world. The Kingdom is the central message of Jesus, his utopia of a complete revolution, where the first shall be last and the last first, where the humble, the servant, the merciful are welcomed into the Kingdom. This vision takes place and is lived out in our very imperfect world; it is in this world that the church carries out its mission, and wherein the Kingdom is manifest. It is the Pope's desire that it is in this world that we should witness the Gospel, showing the mercy, com-passion, and forgiving-love that is the embodiment of the life of Jesus. The Pope leaves the whole church with an invitation to dialogue with the world, so that we must discern intelligently what will best serve the Gospel message in the context of our present social, economic and ecological circumstances. As the Pope concluded the recent Synod on the Family, he said, we must abandon the bureaucratic, formal and inflexible, for compassion and understanding. In his blog, written during the same Synod, our own Archbishop has forcefully suggested that we need to change our language, making it less about power, judgment, and deep-rooted discrimination, not aban-doning the teaching of the Gospel, but in a way that speaks the Jesus message to our contemporaries. It is imperative that we understand the church as a church of wounded human beings, but a church of Jesus Christ, and a church of the People of God. My friends, I wish you all the blessings of peace, joy, happiness and all good things, as we look to cele-brating the birth of our Saviour. May 2016 be all you wish it to be, full of hope and promise. Thank you for all your support, and may God bless you all. Fr John

The BCC has written to inform you of changes to district routes servicing Padua College (Kedron) in 2016. Particu-

lar district routes that I am referring to include 906 (AM), 918 (PM), 920 (new PM), 946 (AM), and 950 (PM). Other

district routes servicing Padua College will be advised by other Brisbane Transport Planners. And other school bus

services servicing Padua College will be advised by other Bus Operators.

There will be no changes to routes 906 AM, 946 AM and 950 PM.

However there will be changes to route 918. Due to high patronage in 2015 there are two route 918 buses de-

parting the Jardine Street bus stop next to Padua College. And these buses are to connect with route 397 for stu-

dents interchanging at Brookside Shopping Centre.

In 2016 one of the two route 918 buses will be converted to a new route 920. And rather than interchange at

Brookside Shopping Centre route 920 will continue to Ferny Grove CityTrain station via the majority of the 397

route. Therefore students will not have to interchange, and they will arrive at their respective bus stops earlier

than the journeys requiring interchanging in 2015. In regard to the second route 918 bus, this service will be main-

tained however without a required connection with route 397 at Brookside Shopping Centre.

Services will begin Wednesday 27th January 2016.

Please see the College website and Translink for further information.

ADMINISTRATION

Over the Year 11 and 10 students will commence their Term 4 exam block. Could all families please be

aware that should your son be in Year 10 or 11, there are certain conditions he must meet as a part of

his exam block privilege:

During exam block, students should either be at home or at school studying. Students are not per-

mitted to work (unless previously organised) during this time. Regular work placement/School based

apprenticeships are the exception.

When transiting to and from the College, students should not be at local shops, shopping centres etc.

When attending school, all students should be in full school uniform, including hats. Students should

also meet the usual College expectations regarding hair and grooming.

Students should arrive to school at least 30 minutes before each exam and will be required to attend

for the duration of their exam.

Any failure to meet these exam block conditions may see a student’s privileges revoked.

General Expectations

Families are reminded that all the normal College expectations regarding uniform, grooming and ap-

pearance should be adhered to until 3pm on the last day of school this year. In the event of ripped or

damaged uniform, parents are asked to please replace or repair their son’s uniform accordingly. This

same expectation also applies to the College hat. Happy Holidays!

Congratulations to the Year 12 boys who over the last few weeks completed their Responsible Service

of Alcohol course. The online course offers a nationally recognised certificate and enables the holder

to work in licensed venues across the country. It is also a major part of the College’s pre schoolies ed-

ucation program.

Problem Solving and Resilience:

Resist always bailing your son out when he fails. Try saying ‘That’s disappointing, how are you going to solve this problem?” Teaching problem solving is teaching responsibility and resilience.

Dear Padua Families

The end of the year is here! The Christmas bunting is starting to appear and even carols can be heard in

the shops! But it’s only November! As we prepare for the festivities of Christmastime, remember to put a

little bit of Christ into whatever you do to prepare. The Church’ year now turns towards Advent as its way

of preparing for the birth of the Saviour.

This week has been a hectic saying goodbye to our Year 12 students. A bittersweet time when there is

much happiness tinged with a little bit of sadness at leaving familiar routines behind. Today at the Vale

Liturgy Yr 5 & 6 farewelled the Seniors with a Guard of Honour as they walked to the hall. The college

community celebrated their year in prayer and song, and Year 11 challenged them to a final war cry battle

before they left. Tomorrow night we gather in the church for mass which will be followed by dinner in the

hall. Farewell Class of 2015 – good luck in all that you do!

Next Tuesday will the last time for this year that we help the Kedron Parish Good Samaritans Group. Year

10 have done a wonderful job in this ministry. A different group of boys each term is appointed to the

task. The Samaritans are always thankful of the boy’s help. This activity has had a long history at Padua

with many boys who can proudly call themselves ‘Samaritans’. Thank you boys.

The year will come to an end next Tuesday night for the Cosies for Rosies Group. A final tally of beanies

will be worked out then but estimates for around 300 beanies are being suggested. What a great effort

that has been! The group looks forward to meeting again in 2016 and new members are always welcome.

The ladies would like to farewell Padua Teacher Ms Wilton. Ms Wilton has been with the group from the

start and she will be missed from the group as she travels abroad next year.

This week the formal commencement of the arrangement between the Franciscan Friars (and Padua) and

MMI (Mary Mackillop International was formally inaugurated. The Minister Provincial, Fr Paul Smith ofm,

together with the Australian Congregational Leader of the Sisters of St Joseph, Sr Monica Cavanagh rsj

Next week staff from MMI return to St Francis of Assisi School to begin their first round of teacher train-

ing. This is an exciting time in our relationship and a new direction we are taking in our help that we give

Assisi school. While in the past we have helped build buildings, for the next three years we will concen-

trate on training the teachers.

The next student pilgrimage to Italy is in the throes of being organised. 21 boys have paid their deposit so

far and we have a dedicated travel agent assigned to our case. I commend this tour to you. There are a

few spots left if anyone would like to consider sending their son next year. Please contact Mr O’Brien on

For the final time this year may I wish every family at Padua much peace and many blessings. May you

celebrate the Christmas Season with all its joy!

Peace and all good to you all!

An email was sent home last week to Parents/Guardians of students in Years 7 to 11, with the link to the Exam Timetable on the College Website. That link is http://www.padua.qld.edu.au/teaching-and-learning/assessment-and-academic-achievements/exam-timetables/. Please be reminded that the Exam Block for Years 7 to 9 is internal (at school) and the Exam Block for Years 10 and 11 is external whereby students only come when they have an exam.

For External Exam Blocks, students are only expected to be at school when they have an exam.

For Internal Exam Blocks, students are expected at school for the entirety of each school day.

Students in Years 5 to 9 have a full program right up until the end of the last day of term on November 28. It is expected that students in those years be in attendance up to and including the last day of term unless the school has been otherwise notified via a Term Time Absence Notification. Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 have an exam in the morning on the last day of term. Any student who misses assessment due to term time absence may receive an Incomplete (INC) on their report for any subject where the full assess-ment load has not been completed.

Semester 2 Academic Report Cards will be emailed to in the Week Commencing December 7. Please note that we email a Year Level at a time and that means that if you have more than one son at the College, the reports will come in separate emails at separate times, possibly on different days. The Teaching and Learning Centre is staffed until 12midday on Friday December 11. Should you have any questions about reports once you have received them, please email [email protected].

It is with great pride and pleasure that I am able to pass on to the Paduan Commu-

nity the wonderful news, received this morning from Space Design Competitions

Australia, that our ASDC Team (Yr9-12) has qualified in the top 8 secondary schools

in Australia for the 7th consecutive year! We have thus earned the right to select a

team of 12 students from our 31 strong 2015 ASDC team to compete at the ASDC

National Finals on 16-17 January 2016.

I have just received the great news that our JSDC Team 7 consisting of Noah Pacey

(Yr8), Luther Minshull (Yr8), Rayan Dib (Yr6) and Lucas Cyrillo (Yr5) have just been

named in the top 5 Australian school entries. That's 3 years in a row that one of our

JSDC teams have achieved this feat!

Congratulations and thanks to Kathy Hodge (Term 2), Leah Mahoney and Kate Ayre

(Terms 2 &3) for their great coaching support.

Robyn, Clarissa, Madonna & Kate would like to

thank all of their fabulous volunteers for their

exceptional support and ongoing commitment to

our Padua community.

During 2015 the Padua P&F continued to encourage interac-

tion between parents, staff and students through meetings

and a number of events held during the year involving the Pad-

ua community.

The Paduan spirit of friendship and goodwill is very much alive as evidenced by the wonderful

people who volunteer and attend these events throughout the year.

The P&F works to promote the mission of the college by consolidating and strengthening the

relationship between the College and the parent body. We extend a warm invitation to all

parents and caregivers to join with us in achieving these ends. We welcome all of your contri-

butions- whether by attending and participating on the committee, volunteering and assisting

with events, or simply attending and enjoying our activities throughout the year.

I would like to acknowledge the members of the P&F Executive Team – Karen Caughey, Ian

McCulloch, Ruth Baker, Di Morris and Linda Stephenson who contribute so much behind the

scenes in order for the committee to continue its support of the school and students. Your

assistance, enthusiasm and support towards the school and to me is greatly appreciated and I

don’t know where I’d be without you.

As the school year comes to an end I would like to wish the Grade 12 student of 2015 all the

best in their future endeavours.

I would sincerely like to thank the College leadership team and staff and students for their sup-

port and fellowship throughout the year. I look forward to working with you all again in 2016.
