When people lose trust in the government, when people lose trust in insMtuMons, when people lose trust in everything they used to trust in; they start believing wildly made up stories that counter the truth. I remember as a child the conspiracy theory that the Apollo moon landing was a hoax to convince the world that America could do the impossible. I've heard that 9-11 was a plot conceived by the American government to sow anM-Islamic fears. Most recently — in fact I read it in the paper just this week — one American claiming that the Covid-19 pandemic is not real, it is a liberal made up story to make the president look bad. Surprisingly, well-informed and educated people believe these stories. When you lose belief in what you thought held things together, you start believing anything you read on your social media feed. And we all suffer. I think most people believe that Covid-19 is real, but many choose not to believe the recommended guidelines to mask up to control the spread. And the result? The curve of infecMons is rising to where this country was back in early April. The truth someMmes is not easy to accept, but as I preached last week, the truth triumphs. Jesus says in John 8, ‘You will know the truth and the truth will set you free.’ In John 14 Jesus tells us that he is the truth. ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but by me.’ John's gospel is a call to trust in Jesus. The last verse of the tradiMonal ending to the gospel says: But these are wri_en so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.’ The key words here are believe and life. Through believing, or trusMng, in Jesus; you have life in his name. Conspiracy theories only lead down deep dark holes that are hard to escape. I don't think they are ever life-giving. A lot of truths are hard truths, but when we begin to trust the people who actually know what they are talking about, the truth will begin to set us free. And that freedom is when we realize life in Jesus' name. — Pastor Froehlke The Truth That Sets Us Free Also in July
