DELMORE JAMES CORMIER (1927-2005) Delmore James Cormier bequeathed the land now known as Cormier Woods in Uxbridge, Massachusetts to The Trustees of Reservations in 2005. The property had been in Cormier’s family for three generations, first purchased by his maternal grandfather Alexandrovich Kozloski (who changed his first name to Alexander) in 1925. According to his Declaration of Intent for United States Naturalization, Alexander Kozloski was born 1 September 1884 in Sekeryncy, Russia, although he claimed to be of Polish descent. He entered the United States on 16 March 1913, crossing into the United States from Canada at International Falls. By 1921, Kozloski and his wife lived in Blackstone, Massachusetts. Kozloski was married to Eugenia Manasterski (later renamed Jennie Kozloski) who was born 15 May 1888 in Andrenwko, Russia, although she also identified as Polish. They had one daughter, Bertha, who was born on 6 August 1912 in Poland. Jennie Kozloski died on 6 May 1958 and Alexander Kozloski died on 24 August 1968.

The Kozloski family lived near the Cormier family, who were French-Canadian. In 1924, 30 year-old Joseph Anthony Theodore Cormier married Bertha Kozloski, who was 13 years old at the time. In 1925, her father Alexander Kozloski purchased the land now known as Cormier Woods for his daughter and her husband. The newly married couple had two children: Theodore Alexander Cormier, later likely nicknamed “Skip”, born 13 May 1925 in Uxbridge, Massachusetts and died 4 December 1991 in Pinellas, Florida and Delmore James Cormier (the focus of this collection), nicknamed “Jim”, born 13 February 1927 and died 26 November 2005. Little is known about the whereabouts of Joseph Cormier after about 1930. Bertha raised her children in Uxbridge, sharing the home with her parents. Kozloski developed a garden on the property while the children attended the Wheeler School in Uxbridge. Theodore Alexander Cormier married and moved permanently to Florida during the early 1950s. Bertha later remarried Louis Phillip Foisy [d. 1987?] who worked for The Peoples Gas Light and Coke Company in Chicago and the couple moved to Illinois. Bertha died 6 January 1986 in Barrington, Illinois. Delmore James Cormier graduated from Uxbridge High School on the honor roll in 1944. He graduated from Boston University with numerous honors in 1948. From 1952 to 1956, he served in the United States Air Force, returning to civilian life to pursue a career in retail sales and purchasing. Cormier had an apartment in New York City, New York; however, he spent almost every weekend at the property in Uxbridge, using it as his permanent address. In 1986, he retired there to Uxbridge take care of his land, property and gardens. He ran a catalog and internet hosiery business called “Stocking Style,” that provided a range of specialized products. He dabbled in antiques, buying and selling as the occasion presented itself. He developed an apiary on the property and sold honey to local customers. He also became active in town politics serving on the Finance Committee for 9 years and also as a member of the Growth Committee. He was an expert with zoning laws and assisted many Uxbridge residents. He died 26 November 2005, and bequeathed the family property to The Trustees of Reservations. DESCRIPTION OF THE PAPERS D. James Cormier Papers focuses on the life of D. James Cormier at his family home in Uxbridge, Massachusetts. There is also material relating to his grandfather Alexander Kozloski and Cormier’s stepfather Louis Foisy. The papers span the years 1909 to 2004; the bulk of the material is from 1950

to the 2004. The papers are organized into eight series: Correspondence, Literary Productions,

Diaries, Printed Material Financial Material, Library, Photographs, and Media.




Series I, Correspondence, is organized into three subseries: General Correspondence, Invitations, and Cards. The first subseries, General Correspondence, includes correspondence to Alexander Kozloski and correspondence to and from Cormier. The second subseries, Invitations, includes invitations to Cormier for Weddings and a Military graduation. The third subseries, Cards, includes holiday cards and sympathy cards to Cormier, his mother and stepfather as well as blank cards. Series II, Literary Productions, is organized into six subseries: Elementary School Materials, College Materials, Military Materials, Business Materials, Finance Committee Materials and Unidentified Materials. The first subseries, Elementary School Materials, includes reports written by Cormier while at The Wheeler School. The second subseries, College Materials, includes class notes from Cormier’s study of Business Administration. The third subseries, Military Materials, includes notes from Cormier’s aircraft training. The fourth subseries, Business Materials, includes Cormier’s resume and business mailing list. The fourth subseries, Finance Committee Materials, includes notes related to the Uxbridge Finance Committee. The fifth subseries, Unidentified Materials, includes handwritten notes. Series III, Diaries, is organized into three subseries: Alexander Kozloski Materials, D. James Cormier Materials, and Memory Books. The first subseries, Alexander Kozloski Materials includes an address book and notebook kept by Alexander Kozloski. The second subseries, D. James Cormier Materials, includes logbooks and address books. The third subseries Memory Books includes, books signed by mourners at the funerals of Jennie M. Kozlowski, Alexander Kozlowski, and Bertha Foisy.

Series IV, Printed Material, is organized into two subseries: Printed Material and Newspaper Clippings. The first subseries, Printed Material, includes Cormier’s diplomas and a retirement notice for Louis P. Foisy. The second subseries, Newspaper Clippings, includes newspaper clippings related to Cormier’s career.




Series V, Financial Material, includes Alexander Kozloski’s Account Book and a Stocking Style catalog. Stocking Style was Cormier’s mail order business. Series VI, Library, is arranged into eleven subseries: Boston University Publication, Business Publications, Coin Publications, Magazines and Catalogs, Maps and Guidebooks, Military Publications, Music, Newspapers, Polish Language Publications, Prayer Books, and Town Annual Reports. The first subseries, Boston University Materials, includes Boston University Yearbooks. The second subseries, Business Publications, includes corporate newsletters with articles about Cormier’s promotions during his retail career. The third subseries, Coin Publications, includes information about coin valuations. It is unclear if Cormier or his mother collected coins. The forth subseries, Magazines and Catalogs, includes publications related to antique collecting and American history. The fifth subseries, Maps and Guidebooks, includes an atlas and a guide to Greater Winnipeg. The sixth subseries, Military Publications, includes Cormier’s Air Force training school yearbooks. The seventh subseries, Music, includes sheet piano sheet music. The eighth subseries, Newspapers, includes American newspapers from the 1950s. The ninth subseries, Polish Language Materials, includes Polish language material on American citizenship. The tenth subseries, Prayer Books, includes prayer books issued by the United States military. The tenth subseries, Town Annual Reports, includes Town of Uxbridge Annual Reports. Series VII, Photographs, is arranged into three subseries: People, Locations, and Merchandise. The first subseries, People, includes photographs of Cormier and his family. The second subseries, Locations, includes photographs taken on vacation. The third subseries, Merchandise, includes photographs used in Cormier’s mail order catalog “Stocking Style”. Series VIII, Media, includes computer disks related to Cormier’s mail order business.
