The Traumas of Law Enforcement

Each year, Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) educates America’s law enforcement agencies on how to appropriately respond to officers and their families affected by line-of-duty traumas through the “Traumas of Law Enforcement” trainings. The Bureau of Justice Assistance, Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice, has provided funding for the 2012 “Traumas of Law Enforcement” trainings. At these trainings, instructors will present information that is vitally important to America’s law enforcement agencies regarding appropriate response to line-of-duty death, disability, critical incidents, and police suicide. The training is presented over three days and includes 21-hours of class time. In its 17th year, the “Traumas of Law Enforcement” has been said to be “the best training I have taken in my entire law enforcement career” by many who have attended.

When a law enforcement officer dies, the survivors’ level of distress is affected by the agency’s response to the tragedy. Three elements of support influence the survivors’ level of distress:1. How survivors are notified of the death.2. Emotional support provided by the agency.3. Information the agency gives concerning insurance and benefits.

Some of the same issues that affect survivors come into play for officers with disabilities and those coping with trauma. Recognizing the importance of helping agencies provide appropriate support for survivors and injured or traumatized officers, C.O.P.S. provides this training free of charge. HOWEVER, PRE-REGISTRATION IS MANDATORY. Space is limited and your participation is not guaranteed.

Complete the registration form on the back panel of this flyer and mail or fax it to C.O.P.S. You can also register online at www.nationalcops.org. You will receive confirmation of your participation in the training by mail and email if space is available. Law enforcement personnel will be given preference.

After your participation is confirmed, make your travel arrangements. Call the hotel directly if you need overnight accommodations. In order to receive the room rate listed, identify yourself as a participant in the C.O.P.S. training and ask for a room from the C.O.P.S. room block.

The curriculum for this course has been submitted for accreditation to the various state law enforcement training commissions where the sessions are being held. Continuing education units will be available to participants in states that require CEU’s.

Deadline for registration for each session coincides with that specific location’s hotel deadline. The number of participants per session is limited, so please respond as soon as possible before the deadline.
