A seventh-grade student at the Columbus School for Girls, Scarlett is dedicated to her best friends, tennis, and loves to read and spend time with her four siblings and family pets. Scarlett attended the Samuel M. Melton Religious School and received her Bat Mitzvah training from Cantor Jack Chomksy. The family wants to thank Cantor Jack Comsky for his dedication and passion to her lessons, especially as he ends nearly four decades at our shul. Due to Covid, the ceremony will be held in our home with family and Scarlett’s closest friends. Scarlett plans and hopes to return to Israel with her family in the Spring of 2021 to celebrate her Bat Mitzvah in Jerusalem.

There are two kinds of people in the world: people who need to have a plan, and people who make no plans and instead fly by the seat of their pants. On second thought, there are more than two kinds of people because I, myself, do not fit into either of these categories. I am completely comfortable making plans but am equally fine with making no plans at all and playing things by ear. My stress begins whenplans are made and then changed. I really, really, really, do not like it (and if you don’t believe me, ask Sharon). If I, either on my own or working with others, have spent time figuring out how we’re going to spend a day, a vacation, or any amount of time, once that plan is in place, I am committed to seeing it through.

All of which has made the events of the past few months continually difficult for me. At the start of the pandemic, just as was true for everyone else, I had lots of plans that had to be changed – our children went from going to school in-person to having virtual school at home, Sharon and I went from working in our offices to working from home and our lives were basically turned upside down. Thankfully for us, our changes were relatively simple as compared to the challenges that others faced. There are so many couples who have had to change wedding plans, family trips to

Israel that had to be rebooked, surgeries that had to be rescheduled and so many other plans that had been painstakingly put into place only to be altered.

With all of that in mind, I’d like to offer both words of pride and caution as you read through this Forum. Immense amounts of thought and planning have gone into our celebration of the festivals this fall. We have done our best to combine in-person experiences with virtual prayer in an effort to bring in 5781 on a spiritual high note even as our world seems to be experiencing new lows every day. I am proud of the work we have done confronting this challenging reality, and proud of this publication. At the same time, I offer words of caution: if you are someone like me who does not enjoy changing plans, start taking deep breaths now. Some of what is printed in this Forum will turn out differently than we had planned- there is no escaping it.

My hope and prayer for all of us in the coming year is that we are blessed to enjoy a year of health and happiness, unity and prosperity, understanding, kindness and a time when we can plan together for the bright future I believe lies ahead.

Shanah Tovah Umetukah – May it be a happy and a sweet new year.

Being TogetherRonald Solove, President | [email protected]............................................................... .

My very favorite part of my involvement with Congregation Tifereth Israel has always been the experience of being together with others participating in services and activities. Whether in our magnificent sanctuary in “my seat” or on the bimah, or in our beautiful chapel, our social hall, or the many other places we enjoy in our building, the being together is a very big part of my spiritual experience in my Shul.

Everything has changed. I am lucky if I can get a glimpse of “my seat” on a Zoom background green screen. When I put on tefillin I am not in the chapel with the rest of the minyan, I am at my dining room table on my computer. No after-services Kiddush. No meetings in the Board Room or conversations in the Rabbi’s office.

Many of the people I care for the most are those I see – and shake hands with – on Shabbat morning. We pour each other a shot of schnapps and

shake hands again. But, not now. How sad that we are not physically being together. But, with a great deal of assistance from the electronic wonders of our age, we are still capable of experiencing time and worshiping together – being together. We can “be” in worship, in learning, and in leading. Physical presence is certainly not the only form being given to us.

We are also together through the many communications we receive from the Shul, and the opportunities to share with one another. Every time I get my copy of Virtual TI: Coming Up This Week in my inbox, I am almost overwhelmed by all that is going on. Our clergy and the synagogue staff do an amazing job of keeping us operating. Click on the Zoom links. Come be with Tifereth Israel. I will see you there!

I have realized over the years that my relationship with Tifereth Israel is just that, a relationship. The more I engage with Tifereth Israel, the more I have personally received in return as with any relationship. I do not see Tifereth Israel as just a building, but a community that has helped form many of my experiences and create the foundation of the person I am today.

Growing up at Tifereth Israel, I never had the “opportunity” to fall in love with another synagogue. Sure, I’ve been to countless bar and bat Mitzvahs, weddings and simchas at other shuls, but Tifereth is my home.

Tifereth is where my parents brought my sister and me to celebrate holidays, to hear the megillah on Purim and the shofar on Rosh Hashanah. It is where my grandfather took me every Saturday morning, where I became familiar with the service and the many wonderful melodies, some still being used today. And, how could I forget the Hershey Kiss that Nate Nateman put in my hand when wishing me a good Shabbos?

As a child, I vividly remember sitting with my friends in the “old” small chapel, learning the Torah service from Cantor Chomsky, in preparation for our upcoming mitzvah’s. I remember playing hide and seek in the labyrinthine lower level of our building, with its many great hiding places. I remember being called to the bima at the conclusion of Shabbat morning services to lead Ein Keloheinu. These are my memories, all good ones.

It is where I became a bar mitzvah and have celebrated with my family and friends when my sons were called to the Torah for the first time. Our shul is where I feel comfortable leading a service, reading Torah, and chanting a Haftorah. Tifereth is a special place where many, many of my memories have been made.

Tifereth Israel is a special community. It is more than bricks and mortar. It is a congregation of people with a common interest. A kehillah who feels it is important to be connected with our past, our present and create a warm Jewish environment for our future. Tifereth is where I come to find comfort and peace when I want to sense a spiritual connection to my Judaism.

It is hard to always be prepared for trying times, but when they have occurred in my life, my shul has always been there. When my father passed away, it was Rabbi Skolnik, who had been in Columbus less than a month, standing by my family’s side. Along with Rabbis Berman and Braver and Cantor Chomsky, the shul’s “support staff,” did just that, provided the much-needed support that one seeks in troubling times. They were there when I needed them to be, and for that, I am tremendously grateful.

I love Tifereth because I value the relationship I have with this community, our community. It is comforting to know that Tifereth is here, in both good times and bad, and will be for future generations to come.

Why I love Tifereth Israel..............................................................

Life & Legacy in PracticeLaura Moskow Sigal | [email protected]................................................................

Lately, I’ve been thinking about my namesake, Laura Gelernter Ratner. My parents ignored the Jewish tradition of naming your child after someone who passed away. They named me Laura while my grandmother was still alive and kicking. I was always “Little Laura” and grandma was “Big Laura.” I knew I was special in her eyes, and I’m sure having the same name was a big part of that.

Grandma had a hard life. My grandfather Abe owned a construction company in East Orange, New Jersey. When he passed away suddenly at a young age, grandma had big decisions to make. How was she going to support her five children? Should she sell the company? Should she hire someone to run it? Nope. She chose to run the company as its president during the middle of the Depression, all by herself. She not only succeeded in growing the company, but she thrived in this role. This was the woman who remembered every card that was played during gin rummy and bridge. Her intelligence and wit could not be outmatched.

When Grandma Laura passed away in 1983 at age 81, we set up the Laura Ratner Fund in her memory. The fund provides interest-free loans to Jewish women who need assistance to secure an education to enable them to become self-supporting. Many Jewish women have found career success as a beneficiary of this fund. When my mom, Sheiala Ratner Moskow, passed away at age 69 in 1998, we set up a similar scholarship fund in her memory. That means there are now more women in this country who are set up for success. It gives me great nachas to know that the legacies of my grandma and mom are making a difference.

After mom passed, I became the administrator of grandma’s fund as well as the one we set up in mom’s name. Lately, I’ve been reviewing all the recipients and what they were able to achieve with this extra boost. I realized that I want to carry on this family tradition by leaving a legacy as well. As a serial nonprofit administrator for over 40 years, I’ve become knowledgeable about planned giving. My husband Jerry and I have life insurance policies that will eventually go to our daughter Becca. It would be nice if we also give back to our community as well. What would be the best way for us to achieve this?

This brings me to the Life & Legacy Program. It’s the planned giving program that is being implemented by Jewish agencies across the U.S. Isn’t it time to declare our commitment to help sustain Columbus’s Jewish organizations and synagogues for generations to come? Will you join me in making a pledge as part of your estate planning? I would love to sit down with you and talk about what a difference you and your family can make in the lives of so many in our Jewish community. I hope that you will reach out to me to set up a time to get together (socially distanced, of course). I’m sure many of you already have estate plans in place. It would be so simple to add a beneficiary to what you already have. Or you can look at adding a policy specifically designated to the synagogue or agency of your choice. With your help, we can watch the future of Congregation Tifereth Israel and the Columbus Jewish community be solidified for decades to come. L’Shanah Tovah! May you go into 5781 with renewed strength and a mind towards the future.Office Closings

The sukkah will be limited to two families at a time for designated time spots. Meal times available from October 3 - October 11, 11:00 am - 6:30 pm.Sign-up!

Borrowing a MahzorMembers of Tifereth Israel will be able to borrow copies of the high holiday mahzor free of charge by signing up here. We will be distributing them in the coming weeks, including at the Clergy Drive Thru (see page 4). If you would prefer to purchase your own copy click here for a digital version ($5.99).

Lulav & Etrog OrderingEnrich your holiday and join in a 3,000-year-old tradition.“And you shall take for yourselves on the first day, the fruit of the hadar tree, date palm fronds, a branch of a braided tree, and willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice before the Lord your God for a seven-day period.” Leviticus 23:40

Since we are not going to be able to be together for Sukkot, we encourage you to purchase a high-quality Lulav and Etrog set from Tifereth Israel. Each set is $50 and can be ordered online at tiferethisrael.org or contact Joy Contreras at 614-928-3291 or [email protected]. All orders need to be in no later than Thursday, September 24. Due to the nature of these items, late orders cannot be accepted. Purchasers will be notified by email when orders are ready to be picked up at the synagogue.

• When on-site, teens will have the opportunity to eat brunch with their friends. • There will be other learning opportunities throughout the year that students can sign up for based on their

interests. More info on that to come.

AVODAH | Synagogue Service This component will ask each teen to choose an area of synagogue life that they can engage with. We will provide mentorship and training for teens to give back to their congregation in the following ways: madrichim (teacher assistants) in Religious School, B’nei Mitzvah tutor, babysitting on Shabbat, Shabbat Clubhouse leader, Torah/service leader, etc. Together with a mentor, each student will find the right fit for their talents.

GEMILUT CHASADIM | Community Service Community Service opportunities will be suggested to students throughout the year that may (or may not) happen during typical school hours.

We highly recommend that all Hebrew High participants be members of a Jewish youth group of

their choosing as we realize that not any one program can be a teen’s sole social outlet.

1413

In 1982, Susan Gellman and I were freshly married – and came to Columbus for me to begin my career as a full-time cantor. We were told that Columbus was “a nice place to raise a family” though we weren’t yet up to that phase of our lives.

As a person who had spent my whole (27 year) life at that point in the “eastern megalopolis” from New York to Providence and Boston, I thought it was a nice opportunity to check out life west of the Hudson.

It was one of a few pivotal and very good decisions I made in my life. Finding Susan and making our life together – CHECK. Finding a welcoming and supportive rabbinic partner in Harold Berman – CHECK. Finding a welcoming congregation and community that would patiently encourage a very-full-of-himself young man – CHECK.

Susan likes to describe me sometimes as a “born again Midwesterner” – that I adopted wholeheartedly the midwestern values that are so clear in our Tifereth Israel and quintessentially midwestern city.

For over 38 years it has been my privilege to represent you in prayer and much more – to train hundreds of b’nei mitzvah, lead choirs, classes, trips, rallies, and, of course, services. You’ve encouraged me to stand loud and tall both personally and as a leader of our congregation and community for things that we value together and things that I am passionate about as an individual.

Words are insufficient to thank the generations of leaders of our congregation – volunteers as well as my clergy colleagues and the many people I have worked with in every aspect of what has made Tifereth Israel a true celebration of the Glory of Israel.

Farewell & ThanksCantor Jack Chomsky | [email protected]............................................................... .

The time has arrived for Susan and me to thank you and embark on our next chapters.

There hasn’t been a single day in those 38 years that I wished I was doing something else – or that I tired of this work. My mantra of “I do what I love and I love what I do” is the truth – through and through.

Because of your support in so many ways over these years, we have also seen that there are many additional exciting things to do in the world – in Jewish life and in every corner of life.

I will never forget the generosity of so many of you in every possible way. You have opened your hearts to us and Tifereth Israel has created a unique sense of community.

This final year has been so difficult for the world as we try to come to terms with the pandemic. It changed everything – or did it? Through it all, we have been able to dig deeper and reach further to connect to each other. Our new ways of connecting show us clearly how possible it will be for us to remain in relationship even as we move across the ocean and seven hours ahead.

One of the psalms we add to the liturgy on Shabbat morning (Psalm 90) concludes with Vihi noam Adonai Eloheinu aleinu, umaaseih yadeinu kon’nah aleinu, umaa-seh yadeinu kon’neihu. May the pleasantness of Adonai our God be with us, may the work of our hands last beyond us and may the work of our hands be lasting.

That is my prayer for you and for me – wherever we go. Lift Every Voice and Sing – and I will surely do the same.

Modim Anachnu Lach. Thanks to all of you!
