BAZAAR

FAMOUS PEOPLE’S RESUME Elvis - My last boss and I... say are you

going to eat those fries?

Julius Caesar - My last job involved a lot of office politics and back stabbing. I'd like to get away from all that.

Genghis Khan - My primary talent is downsizing. On my last job, I downsized my staff, my organization, and the populations of several countries.

Hamlet - My position was eliminated in a hostile takeover.

NORMAL PEOPLE ISSUES: WHY DID YOU LEAVE YOU LAST JOB? Do you think I can use my last employer as a reference? I mean, I didn’t really

mean to break his nose; I was aiming at his eye.

I didn’t really steal that big screen TV. It was Super Bowl and it was a Floor Model anyway – I would have brought it back if the truck hadn’t got a flat.

But, they double, dog dared me to do it. How was I suppose to know they were with the FBI?

These are real, they are documented and I assume true. What is your reason? Does it sound like these or is it more rational and thought out. How do you answer this? As you can see the actual truth doesn’t always work. The best approach is to keep it basic (simple) “It was time to move on…”

CONTACT TO SEE WHAT “PASS” MEANS – DO NOT ASSUME YA KNOW! YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISE HOW EACH EMPLOYER MIGHT DEFINE… When I was in school, I could pass with 69%, I didn’t need 100%. Don’t assume you know what the employer meant by “pass.” Many times it will be “No Fraud, Theft or Violent Criminal History”. Others are considered upon the nature of the crime, how it related to the job applied for and the age of the offence. Always Call an employer and ask them what they mean by "pass" - you might be

surprised as to the differences you will see...take the chip off the shoulder...How many jobs did you not apply for because you assumed that you knew what "pass" means or if it even applied to your circumstances...You lose nothing by calling...

"WAY TO CALL" SCRIPT...TIPSTER #45: Don't start with "ya hire felons?" Start with "I am _______(JOB TITLES) with ____years of experience, I can do____(*insert your talking points on your skills and abilities... Then say "Oh, by the way...what does "pass a background check mean?" Get it...Get them wanting to hire you and then drop the "F" Word on them... ==============================================================

HOW TO DEAL WITH THE ISSUE – From Getta A. Long PhD.

The best way to deal with the issue of your background is burry it back to the back reaches of the interview where (if) you have successfully done your job of properly showcasing your skills and abilities so that the employer needs/wants the skill sets that you properly brought to

the table; then, it will be a much easier conversation and this means a greater chance of a job. Any fisherman will tell you that you catch many more catfish with good bait than an empty hook. Think of employers as catfish and the bait is your skills and abilities. The employers, as we have said, most times…don’t care what you did but, they do care who you are now, how well your skills and abilities match up or exceed what they are looking for and (really) unless your crimes relate to the type of work they need you to do – then there is no connection and your mighty mountains of career ending felonies has been reduced to a speed bump along the road to getting hired. Remember, we tend to blame the biggest elephant in the room for all of the poop and we need to realize and understand that (sometimes) it is not the felonies that were the true barrier but, rather the side effects of the felonies: AKA…lack of a driver’s license, lack of a vehicle, destroyed credit, judgments, fines, restraining orders, drug issues, family problems or those outstanding warrants that you failed to mention. Once we understand that we are dealing with trying to rebuild and flip our lives (career) to attract a new buyer (employer) and we have many issues that will prevent us from getting top dollar; it is then, we realize how critical presentation, packaging, showcasing and marketing are to us getting a good offer.

The solution may not always be easy but, it is workable and it can be done if you are willing to commit all your energy, talent and creativity to being a success or you can blow it off by saying “I’m a felon…Nobody will hire me!” It’s your call…it is your life, your future not mine. How much is that future REALLY worth to you? Then invest you time and energy according to how much it is worth you. =============================================================== WARNING: BEING HIRED DOES NOT MEAN YOU WILL WORK! MANY FACTORS TIE INTO YOU GETTING HOURS WITH THEM…ALSO, KNOW THAT THEY REQUIRE AN EXPENSIVE UNIFORM REQUIREMENT FOR BANQUET SERVICES – TUXEDO PANTS AND ECT… SOME PEOPLE WITH OPEN AVAILABILITY AND THEIR OWN TRANSPORTATION, CAN DO GOOD BY THEM…IF YOU RIDE THE BUS, CAN’T WORK CERTAIN HOURS OR HAVE CONCERNS ABOUT END OF SHIFT, STAY HOME

AND DO NOT GO APPLY, THEY WILL HIRE YOU BUT, YOU MAY NEVER WORK! IF YOU MATCH WHAT THEY ARE LOOKING FOR, THEN CHECK THEM OUT AS THEY DO HAVE A TON OF SHORT TERM EMPLOYMENT. THE MORE DEPENDABLE YOU ARE, THE HARDER YOU WORK…THE MORE THEY WILL OVER YA! http://www.executempssw.com/

USED JOB SHACK INSIDER…FED EX Package Handler Interview - I applied in-person and the process took 1+ week - Interview Details – Kennesaw location has board with telephone number to call when positions are available in front of distribution building on old 41. I called the number and they had a facility operation a week later that anyone interested in the job could attend. If interested you come back next Tuesday to fill out an application and interview. Once that is done it takes about a 3 to 4 days for the background check to clear and for you to be hired. Interview Question – Basically if you were willing to work there, they are going to hire you. ---------------------------------------- Package Handler Part Time Interview - I applied in-person and the took a day Interview Details – Interviewed me and said that I would receive a call as soon as my background check came in. Three months later I received a call offering me a position (later learned that management at the time had been hesitant to choose me over other applicants because of my young age but they became desperate for hands). Showed up, was shown how to do my job, given 2 hours pay to watch employee instruction videos and started that week. Interview Question – The questions were as expected from an unskilled labor position.

Can you lift a heavy box?

Do you have a criminal record?

Are you literate? --------------------------------------- Dockworker Part-Time Interview - I applied online and the process took 4+ weeks Interview Details – Asked me questions from a sheet that he said were mandatory and just formalities. I could tell they were more interested in my experience than the questions. Interview Question – They had a short math test (really easy if you know geometry). One hard question he asked

Was there was ever a time I had to sacrifice quality for speed. ----------------------------------------- Package Handler Interview - I applied in-person and the process took 3 months - Interview Details – It took nearly three months to be contacted after initiating application. A mandatory dock tour was needed. This means you show up about five AM and see what the job is really like. It was odd that no work was in progress during the walk-through. Only after the dock tour were applicants eligible for an official application. The application process could only be done at the work site and times were shortened twice. Eventually, a small time slot of two hours was specified for application. There is not much room to put much experience. Interview with HR Representative was informal. Representative brought up work history and noted two positions at once in the past. Job requirements for lifting and timeliness touched upon. Intent of promotion mentioned with no real response. Education and experience do not matter. Interview Question – There are no difficult questions for the entry-level Package Handler positions. Questions for any promotional position are also not difficult and found the Senior Terminal Managers do not have needed background that is commensurate in other transportation companies. ---------------------------------------- Package Handler Interview - I applied online and the process took 3 weeks - Interview Details – I had gone to 2 different locations to apply. At the 1st location 100 people showed up for the observation so it took me 3 hours to wait to be selected through raffle ticket, then to complete the tour of the place. Went to apply on their computer next day, they called me for an interview next morning. 2nd location and about 30 people showed up and it was a new facility so it wasn't as bad as the first location. A few days later, the 2nd place called me in for an interview. Interview was very quick, they ask you if you

Have you previously worked for a job that requires physical labor?

Are you are accustomed to working in different weather conditions.

What is your availability?

Do you have reliable transportation?

Can you be on time? ===================================================================

TIPSTER: This is a funny place where it

helps (a lot) to have a friend already working there and to let them introduce or recommend you (as long as they are well liked…otherwise, it could be fatal). Short of that, close attention MUST be paid to filling out the application correctly. Their job description will not get you there. You will need to pull up the job title on ONET and use that to put together your application. Then, you MUST take the info from your application and put it in to your resume. Your resume must mirror your application. Next step is to find out who the manager/director is of the section where the job is. Mail or hand deliver this resume with a very nice cover letter which expresses your long desire to work at the hospital and how well you meet their requirements for the position, ask them to pull your application and ask to come see them. DO NOT CALL OR E-MAIL - They will resent the pressure and intruding nature of the phone call because they will feel put on the spot (no matter how smooth you are). The E-Mail will get caught in their spam as they do not know you and their system will strip the attachment out of your e-mail…making the e-mail pointless.

MAKE SURE YOU GIVE THEM A DIRECT CONTACT NUMBER – where they can get you without delay or that you can immediately return their call (you have a thirty minute window before they go on to the next candidate). The higher your asking salary the more critical this becomes. Do not give them an excuse to call the next candidate. LOW BALL YOURSELF - We have 100s of stories of people not getting called until they put themselves into the entry level salary range (regardless of your skills, experience or abilities…they don’t care about this…they care about bottom line and that’s all). Finally, if you don’t or won’t do these things then go home, light a candle and say a prayer to have Old Lady Luck be your co-pilot of this application. ============================================================================

TIPSTER: HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU APPLIED FOR THIS? I hear you. More than once before you gave up. You think that they do not actually hire anyone. Truth is that they do. The reason(s) why you didn’t get called could be that you did the application wrong.

Q. The job requires 1 years’ experience and I said that I had 5 years’ experience why wasn’t that good enough? A. You don’t get it do you? You application is not counting up your years of experience (it isn’t designed to do it) and the computer they used to scan your application is looking for words and phrases. How many key words are there in the phrase “I have 5 years of warehouse work”? How many? I count one and that is a long way from the 100 that you need to get on the “A” interview list. Q. They will see that I have a lot of ability won’t they? A. Who is “they”? A computer is scanning your application and computers are very smart six-year-olds but don’t have the logic to see or understand what you didn’t write in the form of key words and phrases.

Q. How can I change this? A. Go to ONET (http://www.onetonline.org/) and pull up the ONET Job Description for Warehouse Worker. This is a good starting point. Slice, dice and extract all the key words and phrased out of the description. Pay attention to the skills and abilities. Use this information to great a new job description and put this into the application. If you really want this job, then, transfer these new job descriptions into your resume (so that they mirror each other) and you now have a killer resume that you show to the interviewer. Remember, 100+ is what you need!

www.hmshost.com

CRITICALLY IMPORTANT TIPSTER: Listen up! THEY NEVER PULL APPLICATIONS FROM THEIR WEBSITE UNLESS YOU ARE THE IRON CHEF AND ARE WILLING TO WORK FOR MINIMUM WAGE; doesn’t mean that they will hire you then…they may just want to see what is wrong with you. You need to bite the bullet on this if you want this job and really “GO OLD SCHOOL” after you apply online, look up their HR Office over at TERMINAL THREE at Sky Harbour Airport, and get yourself spruced up in your best AZ Casual Clothes (Trim any facial hair or shave…they are nice people but, they are old school too) and go over and introduce yourself while asking them to pull your application. If you impress them with your personality, availability and your motivation, they will. One last thing, UMOM Campers already know this but, if they hire you, it is based upon how you answer one question (both in what you say but, also, in how you say it). The question ties into motivation for the prep cooks, cashiers, hosts and a combination of motivation tied into you skill set (experience here counts) for the productions cooks and Baristas. You need to go over there with you “A” Game or do not waste the trip! The reason why you may want to do this can be found at www.hmshost.com.

TIPSTER: You will not see the actual position posted on the website, apply to the closest one

available THEN, when you go visit their HR OFFICE at terminal #3…(YOU ARE GOING OVER, RIGHT?) have a list of the positions that you applied for. Tell this way “I was interest in _____ position @ _______but, I am open to other opportunities that might be open or that you feel that I would be a better fit?” DO NOT…DO NOT REPLY “ANYTHING!” That will take from a serious hero to zero with them. Remember if you don’t come across as serious about doing a specific job, specifically for them, then they will not do anything for you. By using the above script you show that you are serious but flexible…I know that it is playing games with words but, it is important in how you say this.

TIPSTER: If you have not already been to ONET to properly pad your killer resume with

key words, phrases and to insure that you are showing ALL of the skills and abilities you have…then REALLY do it and reform your resume to include all this…Unless, you goy Old Lady Luck riding with you today… If she is…buy some lotto tickets coming back.

TIPSTER: SPOILER ALERT! Campers! Apply ONLY online and you may be as old as Uncle

Bob before they call you in for an interview? Like HMSHOST, they receive so many applications because they are a national (and one of the largest) facilities management company. RULE # 4 is critical here to a point but, there is still an extra step that you must do to actually get an interview. You must attend one of their occasional job fairs or (better yet and they tell you to do this very thing!) GO INTO ONE OF THEIR LOCAL OFFICES and introduce yourself. REMEMBER THE CONCEPT OF MAKING YOURSELF A SERIOUS CANDIDATE? Remember how HMSHOST tells you to apply online but NEVER pulls applications until after you have tracked down their HR Office and impress them with your “A” Game and show them that you are ready to go to work – only then, do they pull your applicant off their computer. Remember why? Because till you did that, you were not a serious candidate in their mind and if you are not serious then they do not need to waste their time with you…they have far too many people applying to care. OK, campers! Ditto here! Till you show up and their office totally serious and prepared they more than likely not call you. Rule #4 helps and when they do pull your application, it will be a deal maker because your application will be what they are looking for – if you did Rule #4 correctly.

APPLY ONLINE THEN, SPRUCE UP YOUR “A” GAME AND MAKE A BEE-LINE TO THE NEAREST ABM OFFICE!

Central Ave. Ste. 1750, Phoenix, AZ 85012 G. 3602 E Southern Ave 1 & 2, Phoenix, AZ 85040 Many of their jobs pay very well and they always have a large number of openings. Your background MAY be an issue as many of their locations are in schools, government offices, businesses or large factories. Their job description(s) are fairly good at telling you if you should apply or not. The concept is that if they do not say anything, apply and roll the dice…DO NOT ASSUME YOU KNOW…If you go over there with you “A” Game and you have done your job

correctly in frontloading the conversation with your skills (THAT MATCH WHAT THEY ARE LOOKING FOR) and got them wanting you…Betcha you will not need 100% to pass their check…maybe, you can slide in with a 69% or they will try to find something for you? Remember that they are a billion dollar corporation with 100,000 employees.

SPECIAL ISSUE: COSTCO! “…GETTING A JOB HERE IS NOT FOR THE LAZY APPLICANT…” Most people who apply at Costco will NEVER hear from the regarding their application. In fact 8 out of 10 will not get an interview and from there 1 person MAY get an offer. WOW! That’s tuff! It is impossible to get a job there right? It is impossible ONLY if you don’t know the secret(s) to getting your application seen and thus becoming one of the two that actually get considered. This is

not for the faint hearted, those who have (be nice) lazy job seeking skills or those who totally believe that their “KILLER RESUME” is magical and it is soooo good that it can open any door or get them any job…these will be some of those 8 out of ten applicants who don’t get interviewed and the surely won’t be the one hired. Is it that hard? No…but, you must be willing to set-a-side that killer resume and start from scratch. First thing you need to know is… RULE # FOUR This is a very simple question, but in order to give a suitable answer to the recruitment position, you must know how to answer. You need to know about the company you are willing to work for and read their job description. When you are asked this question, tell them that working for Sears will be a challenging and beneficial experience to you. LOCALIZE YOUR JOB SEARCH AND YOU CAN ENHANCE YOUR CHANCES OF GETTING HIRED… STAY WITHIN 5 MILES OF YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD (85008) IN CENTRAL THE PHOENIX/AIRPORT AREA….AS THIS IS YOUR SEARCH LOCAL ZONE…

STEP ONE: APPLY ONLINE…https://www.hrapply.com/bashas/AppIndex.jsp DID YOU KNOW? 80% of all applications get thrown away because you NEVER showed the employer that you had the skills that THEY were looking for. You got too caught up with explaining what you did instead of showing how that related to what this employer wanted. HINT: If I was an auto mechanic applying for a courtesy clerk position at Food City…the last thing I would talk about would be repairing a car…I

would talk about dealing with my customers, resolving their problems…MAKE SENSE? TRY IT! IT DOES WORK MIRACLES! YOU MUST HAVE OPEN AVAILABLE TO WORK IN THIS INDUSTRY UNLESS YOU ARE APPLYING FOR PT WORK.

STEP TWO: GO INTRODUCE YOURSELF…If you really want the job, demonstrate that by

going over to the store and introducing yourself…If you can’t or won’t…this tells the employer everything they need to know about how seriously you REALLY want their job…NOT! Most importantly, this says that you do not care enough…that you might do this job…OR NOT? NO ONE wants to hire the person who demonstrates that they would take this job as a last resort…everyone wants to hire the person who is excited…who likes/love the work and who appreciates the opportunity to get THIS job.

STEP THREE: Explain that you understand that you are being offered an opportunity and

that you appreciate it…because the employer believes that they are offering you an opportunity and most applicants (mostly those not hired) never demonstrate that they get it…little-a-lone that they appreciate it. At the end of the interview, tell the employer that you still want the job…these things make a big difference and many times…means the difference between getting hired or not.

APPLY NOW FROM OUR ONLINE CAREER CENTER AT http://www.careersatsafeway.com/

NOTE: ALL APPLICATIONS ARE ACCEPTED AND A CRIMINAL RECORD WILL NOT DISQUALIFY YOU FROM EMPLOYMENT! The nature of the offence and how it related to the position that you are applying for plus the age of the offence and the circumstances of the offence. TIPSTER: HUMANIZE THIS! There is a big difference in I stole to feed my babies versus I stole that big screen TV from WALMART…GET IT???? http://www.careersatsafeway.com/ ======================================================

THE OLD FAT MAN SITTING ON THE PARK BENCH ANSWERS AN ANGRY CAMPER: “YOU LIED ABOUT SAFEWAY!” Many times in dealing with our previously incarcerated job seekers, we have found that they tend to blame the “F” word for all their difficulties in finding re-entry employment. It is an easy associate but, NOT always true. While blaming that foul, evil letter “F” that you tattoo on your forehead every new day of your job searching seems the correct thing to do but, you give it too much credit. Why did you NOT get hired at (say) Safeway had less to

do with your background unless your past is directly linked or associated with the job you are applying for or you are totally exhibiting no remorse:

• “YEA! I would steal that 55 inch TV again…Hell, I didn’t really steal it but it was Super bowl Sunday…I would have brought it back on Monday…REALLY! Would I do it again…well…not till Super Bowl Sunday…” • “Yea, I shot him but, he deserved it! He had not right to talk to me in that tone!”

Understand that we used extreme examples but, they are true examples that applicants told their potential, new bosses at the interview. Hopefully you get the serious point of that their offensive is not the real issue but their attitude and that creates fear that the applicant has not learned anything in the process and would be more inclined to repeat the behavior as they see

nothing wrong with what they originally did. If you were the hiring employer, would you want that on your watch? Would you be willing to take a risk? You know that answer! More importantly, if you did not get hired at Safeway, might have more to do with your availability. Please remember that the job description (you did read it, didn’t ya?) told you that candidates with open availability will always be on the “A” list when they select interviewees because most stores run extended hours and as the new guy, they are hiring you to work the shifts that their older, more seasoned employees don’t want to work. That’s reality! That you couldn’t work evenings, weekends or holidays has more to do with you not getting hired that the old “F” word. That you are living in Central Phoenix and the location you applied for is in Anthem might be a good reason you didn’t get selected unless they knew you were looking to move out to Anthem (and that you communicated that to that local manager before or right after you completed the application…they do not have ESP or ESPN if they don’t have cable). The application and how you filled it out would be the primary reason why you were not selected. No slight on you because 8 out of 10 applications get tossed because they were done incorrectly. If you didn’t use our Rule # 4 formula then, you did the application incorrectly. Not bragging because it is true. If you didn’t know to get the full job description, didn’t know how to break it down to the skills and abilities that the employer was looking (screening) for…if you didn’t know how to take that and create a narrative that incorporates successfully all of the key words and phrase then you missed it by a mile – unless old lady luck was shining on you or riding shotgun with you that day. If she wasn’t and you didn’t get called…then, I would say that is why they didn’t call you because you never showed the employer that you have the specific skills and abilities that they spelled out in the job description. Please remember that just because it requires no experience does not mean that the job did not require certain skills or abilities – and sometimes a lot of them. Because you were not schooled on Rule # 4, I will cut you some slack. But, that is a method of correctly filling out an application and you should become schooled in it if you want to be successful in this new age of job searching. So...not knowing the step-by-step process you took…I would still content that there were other factors rather than (our old whipping boy) the “F” word, as to why Safeway didn’t call ya…SORRY DUDE! =========================================================================

USED JOB SHACK INSIDER…PROGRESSIVE

CLAIMS ADJUSTER TRAINEE AT PROGRESSIVE INSURANCE - ACCEPTED OFFER

Interview Details –The whole process took approximately 1 month. I applied online. I received

an email 1 week later to take an online assessment personality/IQ test. It basically consisted of

a few math problems and the rest were situational type questions. I received another email

the next morning letting me know that I passed the test and they let me know someone would

call me to schedule a phone interview. A few days later someone called to set up the phone

interview she let me know my interviewers name and let me know that I would be asked a

series of behavioral type questions. We set it up for the following Monday. My interviewer

called at the scheduled time and she gave me some background on what the position entailed

and asked me if I had a valid driver’s license. Then she asked about my education and my

previous experience. She then let me know that she would start asking behavioral STAR

questions. After asking about 7 questions she asked if I had any questions make sure you ask

are there any concerns with my fit for the role? After my questions she asked me how I felt I

did... I told her I thought I did well because I gave great real life in depth examples to show

case my experience. She said she agreed and let me know she was sending me to the next

phase and would be in touch to schedule a face to face. She sent me a link to start my

background. I was called by a different person to schedule my in person interview a few days

later. They called on a Wednesday and asked if I could come in the following Monday. Tuesday

I accepted. I had an interview with 2 people they asked about my experience and college gap.

Then asked more behavioral questions and gave me time to ask questions. I thanked them for

their time. The recruiter called me 2 hrs. Later and asked me how I went I said it went well.

She agreed and said she spoke to my interviewers and they said I did great! A must hire! She

said she wanted to extend an informal offer until my background check came back. So I will be

starting soon!!

Interview Question –

Tell us about a time you had to work in a hostile work environment.

Tell us about your proudest moment in your career.

Tell us about a time when you received negative feedback

Tell us about a time when you had to go above and beyond for a customer

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE AT PROGRESSIVE INSURANCE - ACCEPTED OFFER

Interview Details –Had an initial phone interview which lasted over 1 hour! I thought that was

a bit much considering the position I was applying for, but when it was FINALLY over I was

scheduled to come in to interview in person. I had two separate one-on-one interviews with

managers... both used similar standard behavioral questions.

Interview Question –

Describe a situation in which you faced an obstacle, crisis or challenge.

What happened and what did you do?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CLAIMS ADJUSTER AT PROGRESSIVE INSURANCE - ACCEPTED OFFER

Interview Details –Found the job listing and applied online. A day later I received an email

saying I would be advanced to take an online test. Took about an hour, wasn't terribly hard.

The next day I got an email saying I passed the test and would be getting a phone call to

schedule a phone interview.

A lady called to set up my phone interview. She gave me tips on how to prepare for the phone

interview. My advice to people applying...do research about the company (first question I was

asked). Explain about their core values and their innovative history. Prepare for STAR answers.

Had my phone interview. Went great! Started out by talking about the company, my

education, and then my work experience. This is where I was able to explain, over and over,

that I enjoyed customer service and building trust. (This is a customer service job. You need

enjoy working with customers). Had about 7 behavioral questions. Afterwards, I asked if she

had any concerns about my fit for this role. She said she did not and proceeded to set up my 1-

on-1 interview.

ALSO BEGAN MY BACKGROUND CHECK: BE HONEST

They are going to personally call all of your previous employers. Phone call was about 45

minutes long.

I was set up to meet with the Regional Claims Manager that same week.

I arrived early and met with him shortly. Same type questions that were asked, a lot more

"small talk". Told me the best of luck and that I should hear from my recruiter soon.

Five hours later I got a phone call from the recruiter extending an offer of employment. Said

she needed to wait for my background check to clear. The following Monday the formal job

offer was sent to me.

OVERALL TIME FRAME: 15 days from applying to receiving formal offer.

INTERVIEW QUESTION –

What was your most difficult sale?

Name a time you made a split second decision and the result was perfect?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Claims Adjuster Trainee at Progressive Insurance - Accepted Offer

Interview Details –I found the position posted on my University's Career Services website. I

submitted my resume and completed the online application through Progressive's website

that afternoon.

Four hours later I received an email that I had been selected to complete the next step in the

hiring process which was the online pre-employment test. I was surprised to receive such a

quick response since it was a Sunday.

On Monday morning I completed the pre-employment test. I asked a few questions based off

of graphs, a few mathematics based questions and a bunch of questions regarding your work

preferences and how you react to certain situations.

That same afternoon I received another email stating that based on my results, I was being

advanced further into the hiring process. It told me to look for an email or phone call in the

coming days for more information regarding my next steps.

Wednesday morning I received a call to schedule my phone interview. They told me that I

should expect to be asked questions regarding my education and work history and then I

would be asked several Targeted Selection behavioral questions. You must answer in the STAR

format. The website also gave a few example questions. My interview was scheduled for the

following Monday morning.

Before the interview I made sure to think of scenarios to all the questions they had listed on

the Progressive website as well as questions listed my people on this site (glassdoor.com) that

had interviewed for the same position. I also came up with a series of questions to ask my

interviewer. (Make sure to do this because it shows your interest in the company and the

position!)

The following Monday I was interview by my recruiter (not the same person that called to

schedule my phone interview). She asked me about my least and most favorite things about

working at my current jobs as well as one of my previous jobs. She then proceeded to ask me

about 5 or 6 behavioral questions. At the end of the interview she gave me additional

information on the position that I was applying for and then asked if I had any questions for

her.

After asking my questions regarding the company and role I then asked her if she had any

concerns about my fit for the role (BE SURE TO ASK THIS IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHERE

YOU STAND!). She responded that she had no concerns and that she was moving me on to the

in-person interview. We scheduled it for two days later (Wednesday) with the district hiring

manager. She also told me that I would be receiving an email to get my background check

started.

I couldn't possibly imagine how many more behavioral questions they could ask me. I went

over some of the questions that my recruiter did not ask me in order to prepare. I also

completed the steps to start my background check online.

Wednesday I interviewed with the hiring manager and one of the claims team leaders. They

were extremely nice and were sure to break the ice and made me feel comfortable

immediately. I was able to show my personality and the manager was nice by not asking me

the worst of the questions that were listed. He first asked me a few questions regarding my

education and previous work history and then went on to the 7-8 behavioral questions.

After he finished asking me the behavioral questions he asked me to tell him my impression of

what the job entailed. I gave him a quick summary description and he replied, yes that is the

cliff notes version and went on to give me a more detailed description. After that he gave me a

chance to ask him questions. This was the fun part because I had a ton of really good questions

regarding the position, the expected growth of the company, ECT.

It was my chance to interview him. He was really impressed by the questions that I had asked.

After that he notified me that I would be contacted by my recruiter in the next 10 business

days whether or not I received the position and that he had a few more people to interview

for the claims team the following week. They both walked me out and we had casual

conversation on the way down the elevator. I felt very good about the interview.

Five hours later I received a call from my recruiter asking me how I thought the interview

went. In short, I told her that I felt it went very well. She told me that she just finished

speaking with the district hiring manager and he was very impressed. They decided that they

would like to hire me for the position. She told me I would be receiving an email from the

background check company to continue on with the background check. Once that cleared

(approx. 1 week -- longer if it is difficult for them to confirm employment anywhere) I would

be given a job offer pending my graduation from college that semester and then another

background check would be run to confirm this.

Interview Question –

Describe a time when you had to make a split second decision to solve a problem.

=============================================

Customer Service Representative at Progressive Insurance - Accepted Offer

Interview Details –I submitted my resume and application on Progressive's website and

received a confirmation. The next day, via email, I was sent a pre-employment test and

submitted it that the same day. I was sent my results the next day and a message to look out

for a phone call to schedule a phone interview. I got the call the next day. In the span of 96

Hours

The phone interview was the following week and took about an hour.

They used the STAR method; "Tell me about a time when you________" which you can read

about on the Progressive website under "Hiring Process" on their Jobs page. Afterwards I

asked a few questions: "What is Progressive looking for in a candidate for this position?",

"What do you like about working for Progressive?", etc.

I was contacted 2 days later informing me that I was selected for an onsite interview

(scheduled that) and was emailed a link to their Employee Screening Provider for a

background check. The onsite interview was the following week and took about 2.5 hours. I

interviewed with one supervisor, listened in on a few calls with a seasoned Rep, and

interviewed with another supervisor. They were all friendly and answered my questions. Even

the security guard at the Visitor's Center was friendly. I got an offer (pending background

check) 2 days later..

The background check took a couple of weeks but I am former military and graduated from a

high school with a very slow administrative staff. Within 24 hours of the completion of the

background check I was given the formal offer and email.

Including days and weekends leading up to each phase the process took just under a month.

I'm sure applicants who've moved around less can shave 1 to 1.5 weeks off that.

I have to say this was one of the most challenging and detailed hiring processes I've been

through as a Civilian but that attention to detail is something I appreciate. I highly recommend

reading over Progressive's history and direction, the Hiring Process, and writing/typing out at

least 2 different answers to the questions they'll ask. Again you can get this information on

their website.

Interview Questions

Explain a time when you were given negative feedback by your manager/supervisor.

What was it and how you addressed it? Explain a time when you made a suggestion.

LOOKING FOR JOBS IN ALL THE WRONG PLACES…

RULE # SIX: Research…Do your homework: This is the greatest change in the job seeking market.

Employers are (especially on entry level jobs) looking for skills and most importantly, they are looking for your motivation in wanting this particular job and/or working for this company. If you answer to either question is “Burger king didn’t hire me…” you are in serious trouble. The employer figures if you are not willing to take 10-15 minutes of your own time to get on the internet to discover “who they are…what they do and why they do it…” then, they probably don’t need you. The reasoning is that if you are not willing to do that for yourself and your future…how can they expect you to care about their company and the work that they need you to do.

By showing up uneducated, you are insulting the employer and they will know that you didn’t really want THIS JOB from the very start of the interview…they needed you to want THIS JOB not any job…these interviews usually end with “Thank you very much…we will let you know…” ========================================================================
