A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT...Dear Fellow Club Members,
As I write this on the eve of the Summer Solstice, USA TODAY headlined “Sweat Season is Here”. Wrong I say to their editor, for I am reminded that Summer Solstice creates a wonderful metaphor with heaps of sunshine and a forecast that is bright. At our Oglethorpe Club the forecast is bright indeed…thanks to the support of our members. Club usage is up and as we pass beyond the halfway point of our club year we are comfortably ahead of budget. I am particularly appreciative of the positive response to our changes on the second floor. We have also now moved Member Only dining and activities to the third-floor rooms, including the Billiards Room, the 1870 Tavern and Library. Please note these rooms are members only through 5pm each day. Our summer dress code is in effect for the third floor, however luncheon dining in the Library is, by long standing member only tradition, “Jacket and Tie Preferred”.
For those of you not heading to Stonehenge for the solstice celebration I would recommend instead our South African Wine Dinner on the 14th of July. Michael Ambrose, just back from his travels through the wine districts of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek Valley, Walker Bay and a few photo safaris in Kruger National Park, will be our guest host and Sommelier. I am certain Chef Luke will once again surprise us with a very special menu that will no doubt be enhanced with South African spices and his culinary wizardry.
Please take special note of our summer dress code explanation in this new letter. After Labor Day we will return to our regular dress code which will be defined in our September/October news letter.
While we will be closed for renovations for 3 weeks in August, our popular Men’s Nights on July 18th and August 22nd will be casual and will continue one of our best club traditions.
Finally, a special note of thanks to all who contributed to the George Savage Owens Society fund. The generosity and commitment of our club members is heartening to me as your elected leader. If you have committee chair Clark’s letter sitting on your desk, there is still time to join the other members of the GSO Society with any contribution with which you are comfortable.

A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT...Dear Members,
I hope this letter finds all of you safely recovered from our recent visitor, Hurricane Matthew. I am happy to report that our club suffered minimal damage, losing only a few windows and our power for a short time. A big thank you to all of our staff who worked so diligently to have us restocked and open for family night dinner the Thursday imme-diately after the storm.
In many ways 2016 has been a transitional year for our club, as we had both a new manager and chef join us during the fiscal year. I am happy to report that both Jim and Luke have done outstanding jobs in their first year with us, and I owe them both a debt of gratitude for making my job easier.
Our club continues to operate well financially and we remain debt free. We had another sound year in membership growth, with our year end member-ship total above our beginning year number. Please remember that our demographics will continue to be a challenge in the near future, and hence quality new members will always be on the forefront of priorities.
Club usage is on sound footing, as our monthly calendar continues to be full of both club and private functions. As we enter the holiday season, please read our" This week at the Oglethorpe Club" email blasts to keep up with the upcoming events.
A reminder, our annual meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, November 16th.
Lastly, as I write my final President's newsletter, I wish to thank all of our wonderful management, staff, and my fellow board members for all of their help and hard work this past year. It is precisely this bond of camaraderie that makes our club unique. At one hundred forty-six years young, the Oglethorpe Club's best days still lie ahead!
See you at the club.
With best wishes for the holiday season,

HISTORIANS’ NOTEThroughout our rich history, the Oglethorpe Club has demonstrated a deep and abiding patriotic spirit, as the membership rolls will attest, from our forefathers Josiah Tattnall and Henry Rootes Jackson to many of those among us today. In addition, over the years the Club has paid tribute to those who heed the call to service: displaying a blue-star banner in recognition of members deployed during the First and Second World Wars; holding a luncheon for past and present service members on Veterans’ Day; and hosting the officers of ships calling at Savannah. As your historians have noted elsewhere, on May 7th, 1892, the Club invited the commander of the USS Philadelphia Captain Frederick Rodgers and his officers to attend a reception in their honor—an entertainment of unmatched elegance, albeit one that ultimately compelled the Board of Managers to suspend the Annual Meeting later that year in order to replenish the coffers.
Whereas a deficit of this order would chasten most any organization and thus inspire a newfound sense of frugality if not parsimony in its membership, the Oglethorpe Club was not to be daunted. And so, when when Admiral George Dewey called at our port in March of 1900, our predecessors rose to the occasion once again: rather than quibble over a matter trivial as expense, the Club hosted another grand reception. Without a doubt, much pomp and ceremony attended the admiral’s visit to our city, heralded by an announcement in the January 1, 1900 edition of the New York Times: on March 21, the Hostess City would celebrate his arrival with a parade and review in Downtown Savannah and, later that evening, a banquet at the DeSoto Hotel. At this event, Georgia State Senator F.G. DuBignon would present the guest of honor with a sterling vase.
Less widely reported, however, would be the private affair held for Admiral Dewey and his wife the previous evening at the Oglethorpe Club’s rooms on Bull and Broughton, as recorded by Secretary B. Palmer Axson in his November 1940 history of the Club. In their coverage of the banquet at the DeSoto, journalists reported the admiral’s health that day, citing a bout of “indigestion” brought on by the previous evening; at pains to preserve the dignity of this hero of the Spanish-American War, writers referred obliquely to Dewey’s “indisposition of yesterday,” or his state of “innocuous desuetude,” and identified a lobster salad past its prime as its cause.
Of course, the previous evening in question Admiral and Mrs. George Dewey spent at the Oglethorpe Club, and, while anecdotal evidence suggests the Club’s bill of fare did not agree with the guest of honor, the salad was not the culprit. Rather, we must blame the punch, namely the Chatham Artillery Punch which the Club had brewed especially for the evening. Considering the mixture’s legendary potency—two gallons rum, two gallons Catawba Wine, one gallon each of brandy, rye, and gin, set for two weeks and then mixed with ten quarts Champagne—one could hardly blame the admiral (see Savannah Style for recipe in full). Culpability aside, this and other events throughout our history reflect the spirit of hospitality and pride in nation embodied by the Club, purchase ledger—and rum ration—notwithstanding.
