Dear Friends of Archery,

he New Year brings new hopes for all our archery family members. I believe that this year will be another active period for all of us. As you know, our main activity is the

Olympic Archery Event in Beijing and this time we have a re-ally wide-open competition with participants from countries around the globe. This is a window of opportunity for us to showcase our sport to the world.

We are continuing to implement our Archery World Plan by means of Study Groups composed of people from many countries with varied backgrounds, expertise and interests. The input from these Study Groups greatly assists us to fur-ther develop and refine our implementation of each seg-ment of the plan. We believe that this plan will be another good example of FITA’s innovation for the sports world at large.

As you know, we had a very successful and dynamic World Cup series and final in 2007. The World Cup Final, which was held in Dubai, was especially attractive. It drew major media attention and was broadcast worldwide. FITA wants to or-ganise finals in interesting, historical and media-grabbing locations, which will be very attractive for our archers and coaches too.

I think that you are enjoying the Target Magazine, which, for the last couple of years, has had a new appearance, for-mat and additional content. To be able to do this, it has been necessary to establish a very high level of teamwork—be-ginning with the first written draft article to the final issue rolling off the presses. As the FITA President, I would like to thank the entire FITA Team for their contributions to this effort and of course, another thanks to the hard-working Hacettepe Team for their top-quality production work for FITA.

I wish everybody a healthy, happy and successful 2008!

Chers amis du tir à l’arc, a nouvelle année apporte de nouveaux espoirs pour tous nos membres de la famille du tir à l’arc. Je crois que cette année sera une autre période active pour

nous tous. Comme vous le savez, notre activité principale sera la compétition olympique de tir à l’arc à Beijing, et cette fois-ci, nous aurons droit à une compétition grande ouverte avec des participants du monde entier. C’est une belle opportunité pour nous de mettre notre sport en vitrine et le présenter globalement.

Nous continuons à développer notre Plan Mondial du Tir à l’Arc au moyen de Groupes d’étude composés de gens de nombreux pays avec des expertises et des intérêts variés. La contribution de ces Groupes d’étude nous aide beaucoup à développer et affiner l’application de chacun des seg-ments du plan. Nous croyons que ce plan sera un autre bel exemple pour le monde du sport en général.

Comme vous le savez, les Etapes et la Finale de la Coupe du Monde ont rencontré un énorme et dynamique succès en 2007, particulièrement la Finale de Coupe du Monde qui s’est déroulée à Dubaï et fut des plus attrayantes. Elle a attiré une grande attention des médias et a été couverte au niveau TV dans de très nombreux pays. La FITA souhaite organiser les finales de ses événements dans des lieux in-téressants, historiques et attirants pour les médias, ce qui devrait également être très motivant pour nos archers et nos entraîneurs.

Je pense que vous prenez du plaisir à lire le Magazine La Cible qui, au cours de ces dernières années, a pris une nouvelle apparence, un nouveau format et a amélioré son contenu. Pour y parvenir, il a été nécessaire d’établir un travail d’équipe de très haut niveau, de la toute première ébauche d’article jusqu’à la sortie de presse. En tant que Président de la FITA, je tiens à remercier l’équipe FITA com-plète pour leur contribution au magazine et bien sûr aussi l’équipe Hacettepe pour leur travail de production de qua-lité.

Je souhaite à chacun que l’année 2008 lui apporte santé, bonheur et réussite!

Dear President,The beginning of the year is usually a time to reflect on the past and make plans for the future. After two and a half years leading FITA, what are, in your mind, the three main achievements during this period?The first and foremost project was the establishment of the Archery World Plan, FITA’s strategic plan for the fu-ture. This plan contains the direction and emphasis that we will be following in the future. Another important proj-ect was our sponsorship development programme. This is the first time FITA has had a successful and strong sponsorship programme and the sponsorship programme permits us to develop our World Cup Stages and Final, which is the third item new to FITA in the last two and half years.

You were recently nominated as the Rector of the Hacettepe University. Congratulations! What does it change in your every day life? Will it change anything for FITA?In fact, there is not a great deal of change; I start very early and I finish very late, this is my every day routine. Of course, there are some changes, for instance, I make all my decisions on my own now and this is an advantage for me. I can easily arrange my time for all my respon-sibilities, including my duties on behalf of FITA. My job is important and influential in my country and this good fortune may be an advantage for FITA, we hope to be able to develop more opportunities for FITA and archery.

Do you think sports can learn from an organisation like Hacettepe University or from business in gen-eral? And vice-versa?Business can learn a great deal from sport, especially the idea of goal setting, establishing plans to achieve

Cher Président,Le début de l’année est en général une période de réflex-ion sur le passé et de planification pour l’avenir. Après deux ans et demi à la tête du tir à l’arc, quels sont selon vous les trois principaux accomplissements de la FITA au cours de cette période?Le premier et principal projet a été la mise sur pied du Plan Mondial du Tir à l’Arc, le plan stratégique de la FITA pour le futur. Ce plan indique et met l’accent sur la direction vers laquelle nous irons à l’avenir. Un autre projet important est notre programme de développement du sponsoring. C’est la première fois que la FITA possède un bon et solide program-me de sponsoring. Celui-ci nous a permis de développer nos Etapes et Finales de Coupe du Monde, troisième nouveauté de la FITA au cours de ces deux années et demie.

Récemment, vous avez été nommé Recteur de l’Université Hacettepe. Félicitations! Qu’est-ce que cela changera dans votre vie de tous les jours? Est-ce que cela chang-era quoi que ce soit pour la FITA?En fait, cela ne change pas grand-chose; je commence mes journées toujours très tôt et je les finis très tard, c’est ma rou-tine quotidienne. Bien sûr, il y a quelques changements, par exemple je prends maintenant toutes les décisions moi-même et c’est un avantage. Je peux facilement arranger mon temps pour toutes mes responsabilités, dont mes devoirs au nom de la FITA. Mon travail est important et a une grande influence dans mon pays, et cette grande chance pourrait être un avan-tage pour la FITA. Nous espérons, grâce à cela, être capables de développer plus d’opportunités pour la FITA et le tir à l’arc.

sport, spécialement le fait de déterminer des objectifs, d’établir des plans pour atteindre ces buts et d’exécuter ces plans. Le sport est une activité très dynamique où les décisions doivent être pri-ses de manière opportune. Certaines décisions doivent être pri-ses aujourd’hui et ne peuvent pas attendre demain. Ces principes s’appliquent tant au business qu’au sport. Vous devez aller dans la bonne direction au bon moment.

Le sport peut quant à lui apprendre beaucoup du monde des affaires: les principes de gestion, le management de qualité, les ressources humaines, la gestion des risques, les finances, la coordination des efforts et une approche sérieuse de la situa-tion pour avoir du succès. De plus, le travail en équipe est essen-tiel au succès aussi bien dans les affaires que dans le sport.

Dans les hôpitaux, le contrôle de qualité est très impor-tant pour garantir que les procédures sont suivies cor-rectement. Comment pensez-vous que les fédérations sportives doivent se conduire pour s’assurer de la qualité et du succès de leur gestion?A l’hôpital, la gestion de la qualité des procédures, telles que l’évaluation et la prise en charge du patient, l’accès aux soins et leur suivi, est très importante. Du début jusqu’à la fin, la prise en charge du patient doit s’effectuer sans heurts et sans risque. Il faut avoir les moyens de mesurer le succès de ces procédures.

Dans le sport, on a besoin des mêmes méthodologies. Les Fédérations Internationales doivent appliquer des procédures facilement accessibles à leurs clients (patients et docteurs à la place des entraîneurs, athlètes, fédérations membres). La communication entre les parties prenantes et la fédération doit être mise en valeur afin d’établir leurs besoins et de leur fournir les meilleurs services (soins).

En préparant notre plan stratégique, nous avons recueilli des informations et les opinions de nos associations membres et officiels élus. Nous pensons qu’il est nécessaire d’impliquer toutes les parties prenantes dans les processus qui vont les toucher directement. Avoir des objectifs communs et clairs est une étape obligée pour que les fédérations soient capables de mesurer le succès de leurs buts stratégiques.

Pensez-vous qu’il faille avoir des capacités particulières pour être un manager sportif à succès?Tout d’abord, il est nécessaire d’avoir une énergie sans fin. Il ne faut pas être un visionnaire, mais il faut être capable de se tourner vers l’avenir. Où serons-nous la semaine prochaine, l’année prochaine, dans cinq ans? Il est essentiel d’être capable de penser en termes d’objectifs à court et à long terme. Bien sûr, l’habileté à bien communiquer est nécessaire et ceci com-prend la capacité à écouter les opinions des autres. Le travail en

the goal and implementing these plans. Sport is a very dynamic activity and decisions must be made in a timely manner. Decisions must be made today; they cannot be made tomorrow. These principles apply to both business and sport. You have to be going in the right direction at the right time.

Sport can learn a lot from business: management principles, quality management, human resources, risk management, finance, coordination of efforts and a se-rious business-like approach to achieving success. Also, team work is essential for success in both business and sport.

In the hospital, quality control is very important for ensuring that processes are done properly. How do you think sports federations should go about ensuring quality and success in their management?In a hospital, quality management of processes, such as patient assessment and care and access to and continu-ity of care, are most important. From the beginning to the end, patient care must be seamless and safe. One must have a means to measure the success of these pro-cesses.

In sport there is a need for similar methodologies. Inter-national Federations must implement processes that are easily accessible to clients (patients and doctors versus coaches, athletes, member federations). Communication between stakeholders and the federation must be en-hanced to assess their needs and to provide better ser-vices (care) to them.

In the preparation of our Strategic Plan, we have gath-ered information and opinions from our Member Associa-tions and from elected officers. We believe it is necessary to involve our stakeholders in the processes that will di-rectly affect them. To have common and clear objectives is a mandatory step for the federation to be able to measure the success of its strategic goals.

Do you think there are any specific skills one should have to be a successful sports manager?Necessary skills should include unending energy for a start. One must not be a visionary, but one must be able to have a vision for the future. Where will we be next week, next year, in five years? It is essential to be able to think in terms of short-term and long-term goals. Of course, good communication skills are necessary and this includes the ability to listen to the opinions of others. Team-work is very important. To a certain extent, one must be a dip-


lomat and be able to work with others in a harmonious work setting. Tolerance for opposing views is necessary, as is the ability to make decisions once the preliminary work of analysis and proposed implementation has been accomplished.

What are your key priorities for 2008?We will continue throughout 2008 with our implementa-tion of the FITA strategic plan—the Archery World Plan. As a part of this plan, we intend to continue to develop our sponsorship programme in order to continue our very successful events and to develop new programmes and projects. Finally, it is extremely important and vital for FITA and archery that the archery event at the Beijing Olympic Games be very successful. This Olympic event is our window of opportunity to show the entire world the beauty, excitement and high competitive level that are all part of archery. I believe that we will succeed with a magnificent Olympic event.

Finalement, il est extrê-mement important et vital pour la FITA et le tir à l’arc que les épreuves aux Jeux Olympiques de Beijing se déroulent par-faitement bien. Cet événement olympique est notre vitrine et l’occasion de montrer au monde entier la beauté, la passion et le haut niveau de compétition qui caractérisent le tir à l’arc. Je crois que nous aurons une épreuve olympique somptueuse.


he Meteksan Archery World Cup 2007 had four qualify-ing stages in Ulsan (KOR), Varese (ITA), Antalya (TUR), Dover (GBR) and a grand World Cup Final in Dubai. The

archers had to gather World Cup points, and only the top four archers per category could compete in Dubai.

Recurve MenAfter three events, Baljinima Tsyrempilov (RUS) was the only archer qualified for the Final and he confirmed his su-premacy with a win at Stage 4 in Dover. For the rest, the race to the qualifications was wide open; Al Wills (GBR) and Juan Rene Serrano (MEX) finally rose to the top with 2nd and 3rd place in Dover. Michele Frangilli just qualified for Dubai thanks to his win in Varese earlier in the year.

In Dubai, the favourite, Russian Tsyrempilov, easily de-feated the Italian Frangilli in the first semi-final by 113-102. His contender for the World Cup title would be the young, promising Serrano, who had beaten the Briton Wills in the second semi-final. In the gold medal match, the up-and-coming star from Mexico held off his more experienced op-ponent, but the final score was 112-110 for Tsyrempilov, the young Russian’s first World Cup Final victory. Wills took the bronze over Frangilli by 103-102.

After his victory over Serrano, Baljinima Tsyrempilov said he was not really surprised to win in Dubai, “I am very pleased to win but I am not surprised. I came to this World Cup final as the number one ranked archer. I had to show that I was number one and I did that. Experience is impor-tant. I have won many titles in the past and it is this experi-ence that helps in the most important matches.”

pas vraiment surpris. Je suis venu à cette Finale de Coupe du Monde en tant qu’archer classé No 1 et je devais donc montrer que j’étais bien le meilleur, ce que j’ai réussi à faire. L’expérience est importante. J’ai gagné de nombreux titres par le passé et c’est cette expérience qui aide dans les matchs les plus importants.”

Classique DamesLa jeune russe Natalya Erdyniyeva était déjà qualifiée pour la Finale de la Coupe du Monde avant même la dernière étape de Douvres. Classée 2e après les trois premières éta-pes, Choi Eun Young (KOR) pouvait espérer se qualifier pour Dubaï même sans concourir à Douvres. Derrière ces deux filles, la course restait ouverte parmi celles qui prenaient part à la compétition de Douvres. La gagnante de la Coupe du Monde 2006 Juan Juan Zhang (CHN) s’est qualifiée pour Dubaï grâce à une 2e place en terre anglaise. Avec une pre-mière victoire en Coupe du Monde, l’Indienne Dola Banerjee est revenue de loin et a pris le dernier ticket pour la Grande Finale.

Recurve WomenThe young Russian Natalya Erdyniyeva had already quali-fied for the World Cup Final before the last stage in Dover. Ranked 2nd after the first three stages, Choi Eun Young (KOR) had qualified for Dubai, so she did not compete in Dover. Behind these two, the race remained wide open. The 2006 World Cup Winner, Juan Juan Zhang (CHN), qualified for Dubai thanks to a 2nd place win in Dover. India’s Dola Ba-nerjee came back from far behind and, with her first World Cup victory, took the last ticket for the Grand Final.

In Dubai, Erdyniyeva, who skated through the World Cup season with 1st place in Antalya and 2nd in Varese, was full of confidence as she faced Banerjee in the semi-final. The Indian had the best start and took an early lead that she managed to keep through to the end to win the gold final. The second semi-final was between two athletes from Asia, Choi and Zhang. The Chinese woman was off her match com-pletely and suffered a big upset. In the gold final, Baner-jee and Choi seemed very nervous. Their scores were very close the entire match, but the Indian had a better last end.

She won 110-109 and added her name to the list of World Cup Winners. No 1 in the world, Erdyniyeva, took the bronze over Zhang, 106-104.

Dola Banerjee, after her upset over Korean Choi Eun Young, said, “That is the biggest victory for me. The Koreans are always very strong. I didn’t feel very good at the start of the semi-final—my concentration was not good. But towards the end of that match I found my focus, which continued into the final. Perhaps I put too much pressure on myself in the semi-final but in the final I felt more relaxed.”

Compound MenJorge Jimenez (ESA) dominated the season with two 1st plac-es in Ulsan and Dover and one 2nd place in Varese. He was actually almost certain to qualify for the World Cup Final before Dover. Sebastien Brasseur (FRA) and Braden Gellen-thien (USA) were also in very good positions. The real battle was to be for the fourth qualifying place with many archers in position. Jimenez, Brasseur and Gellenthien finished in the top 3 in Dover, thus confirming their qualification for the Dubai Final. The fourth spot went to Roberval Dos San-tos (BRA). He ranked 9th in Dover thanks to the highest losing

La deuxième demi-finale a mis aux prises deux athlètes asiatiques, Choi et Zhang. La Chinoise est passée complètement à côté de la partie et a subit une défaite surprenante. Dans la finale pour la médaille d’or, Banerjee et Choi semblaient toutes deux très nerveuses. Elles sont restées très proches l’une de l’autre durant tout le match, mais c’est finalement l’Indienne qui a réussi une meilleure dernière volée. Elle l’a emporté 110-109 et a ainsi ajouté son nom au palmarès des vainqueurs de Coupe du Monde. Juste avant, la No 1 mondiale Erdyniyeva avait pris la médaille de bronze devant Zhang par 106-104.

Dos Santos was given a difficult task in the semi-final in Dubai with a match against the strongest athlete of the time, the Salvadorian Jimenez. The Brazilian gave a fantas-tic performance tying his opponent at the end of the match. The winner was decided at the third shoot-off arrow when Jimenez scored 10 versus 9 for his contender! A shoot-off was also necessary in the second semi-final to decide the winner between Brasseur and Gellenthien. With a 5 in his second shoot-off arrow, the Frenchman left the door wide open for his American contender to face Jimenez for the World Cup title. Spectators attended a spectacular gold medal match with a final score of 118-116 in favour of the Salvadorian star Jorge Jimenez. The bronze went to the other South American athlete Dos Santos, who beat Bras-seur by 116-114.

After beating Braden Gellenthien, Jorge Jimenez said: “I was very nervous, in fact, I just had to keep saying to myself that I should focus on the target. I was able to do this and it helped me win the match. It has been a very good year for me and this is a special way to end it. This has been my best year.”

Dos Santos s’est retrouvé face à une tâche difficile en demi-finale à Dubaï, avec un match contre l’athlète le plus en forme du moment, le Salvadorien Jiménez. Le Brésilien a réussi une magnifique performance en terminant la ren-contre à égalité avec son adversaire. Le gagnant allait se décider à la troisième flèche de barrage. C’est alors que Jiménez a marqué un 10 contre un 9 à son adversaire! Un autre shoot-off a été nécessaire dans la deuxième demi-fi-nale pour décider du vainqueur entre Brasseur et Gellen-thien. Avec un 5 à la deuxième flèche de barrage, le Fran-çais a laissé une belle ouverture à l’Américain, qui allait donc affronter Jiménez pour le titre de Coupe du Monde. Les spectateurs ont eu droit à un match spectaculaire pour la médaille d’or avec un score final de 118-116 en faveur de la star du Salvador Jorge Jiménez. Le bronze est revenu à un autre athlète sud-américain, Dos Santos, qui a pris le meilleur sur Brasseur 116-114.

Après avoir battu Braden Gellenthien, Jorge Jiménez a déclaré: “J’étais vraiment très nerveux. J’ai dû me répéter que je devais me concentrer sur la cible. The fourth woman, Ericsson, certainly did not suf-fer from a deficit of experience, however, being a successful archer at the elite level for more than 15 years!

In the semi-final, the 2006 World Cup Winner, Goncharo-va, faced Van Natta, no. 1 in the 2007 World Cup Ranking. The two archers proved very close and were tied at 115 after twelve arrows. Both shot a 10 in the first shoot-off, but then Van Natta scored a 9 while her opponent shot 10. As in 2006, again Goncharova would fight for gold! Another shoot-off was needed to decide the winner in the second semi-final. Kazantseva, who won both the Ulsan and Antalya stages, fi-nally admitted defeat with a 9 versus a 10 for Ericsson. The Swede was four-month pregnant at the time and she could not have been happier than to be shooting for gold! In the gold final, she took advantage of a poor start by her Rus-sian opponent Goncharova to take a comfortable lead and clinch an easy victory, 116-105! The bronze medal went to the American Van Natta who finally beat a Russian archer, Kazantseva, 114-106.

When we asked Petra Ericsson how expecting a baby had impacted her archery, she answered, “It affects me a bit but it’s been ok. Fortunately the baby kept quiet and still in the final because there had been a couple of kicks in the semi-final.”

Cependant, seule Kazantseva était d’ores et déjà qualifiée pour Dubaï avant l’épreuve de Douvres. En terminant dans le top 3 à la quatrième et dernière étape de l’année, Van Natta, Ericsson et Goncharova (celle-ci ayant battu l’Américaine Jahna Davis dans un quart de final décisif) ont également obtenu leur ticket pour la Finale de Coupe du Monde. Les deux archères étaient très proches durant ce match et se sont même retrouvées ex aequo à 115 points après les douze flèches. Toutes deux ont marqué un 10 dans le premier tir de barrage, mais Van Natta a poursuivi avec un 9, alors que son adversaire a tiré un 10. C’est donc Goncharova qui allait se battre pour l’or pour la deuxième fois après 2006! Un autre barrage a été nécessaire pour désigner la gagnante dans la deuxième demi-finale. Ka-zantseva, qui avait remporté les deux étapes d’Ulsan et An-talya, allait finalement s’incliner avec un 9 contre un 10 pour Ericsson. La Suédoise, qui était enceinte de six mois à ce mo-ment-là, ne pouvait pas être plus heureuse de tirer pour l’or! En finale, elle a profité d’un mauvais départ de son adversaire, la Russe Goncharova, pour prendre une avance confortable et remporter facilement la victoire sur le score de 116-105! La médaille de bronze est revenue à l’Américaine Van Natta, qui a battu la Russe Kazantseva 114-106.

Quand on a demandé à Petra Ericsson dans quelle me-sure le fait d’attendre un bébé avait eu un effet sur son tir, elle nous a répondu: “Ça m’affecte un peu mais ça s’est bien passé. Heureusement, le bébé est resté calme et immobile durant la finale, car j’ai reçu quelques coups en demi-finale.”

shooting archery when I was 14, because of my father, who used to shoot some archery. One year later, I was in the national selection and started to compete internationally; I have been in the national selection from that year until to-day. Pour parler un peu de moi, j’adore le sport et aussi faire la fête. J’essaie toujours de faire bien les choses, et de faire mieux à chaque fois. A part ça, j’ai un tempérament plutôt explosif et m’emporte assez facilement, mais j’essaie de rester calme avant toute chose. En plus de mes parents, j’ai une grande sœur et un petit frère. Depuis peu, je me consacre à plein temps au tir à l’arc. J’aime les jeux vidéo, la natation et le café.

La saison dernière, le moment le plus important des qua-lifications pour Dubaï, c’était l’Etape 3 à Antalya, lorsque je suis allé jusqu’en finale pour la médaille de bronze. Je pense que personne ne s’attendait à me voir à cette place. C’était très impressionnant pour moi de me retrouver à ce niveau et

To talk a bit more about me, I love sports a lot, and party-ing too. I always try to do things well, and improve all the time. I am quite quick-tempered and explosive, but I try to keep calm. I have an elder sister and a younger brother in addition to my parents. Lately, I have been dedicated to archery full-time. I also like video games, swimming and coffee.

Last season, the most important moments during the qualifications for Dubai were at the Stage 3 Antalya, when I won the bronze final. I am sure no one was expecting me to win and it gave me the vision that I could reach the Final. After that, the Stage 4 in Dover was very hard for me. First, I had flown from Brazil to England the same day as the of-ficial practice. Then, I did not receive my archery equipment which was stuck in customs. I still did not have my equipment a few hours before the qualifications, which frightened me a lot. Fortunately, after waiting several hours in the airport, I finally got my equipment just in time. During eliminations, I shot two very difficult and close matches, that were key to reaching the qualification for the Final. After having quali-fied for the Final and having met my expectations and pre-dictions, I went home very happy!

In Dubai, for the Final, I had a great time and I was proud of my 2nd place finish! I gained a lot of maturity in the World Cup competition, in addition to the great satisfaction of having achieved something that has never been achieved in my country: a podium at a world-level competition for a re-



curve archer. I also feel that, through this event, people got to know me and I am now recognized in the archery world. I hope I will be able to do it again next season.

My expectations in 2008 are to reach the Olympics with all the best preparation and to take advantage of all I learned in 2007. My dream is to make history for my country and for my people, to enjoy the competitions and to com-pete with all my heart.

ça m’a fourni la conviction que je pouvais atteindre la Finale. Après ça, l’Etape 4 à Douvres a été très dure pour moi, tout d’abord parce que je suis arrivé en Angleterre en provenance du Brésil le jour même de l’entraînement officiel. Ensuite, je n’ai pas reçu mon équipement de tir à l’arc, qui est resté coin-cé à la douane aux Etats-Unis pour un contrôle. Donc, quel-ques heures avant les qualifications, je n’avais toujours pas mon matériel, ce qui m’a fait vraiment peur. Heureusement, après avoir attendu quelques heures à l’aéroport, j’ai fina-lement récupéré mon équipement juste à temps. Durant les éliminations, j’ai gagné deux matchs très durs et très serrés, mais des matchs-clés en vue d’une qualification pour la Fina-le. En me qualifiant pour Dubaï, j’avais atteint mes objectifs et mes prédictions, et je suis rentré à la maison très heureux!

En ce qui concerne la Finale, j’ai tout simplement passé un moment magnifique à Dubaï et j’étais très fier de ma 2e place! Ce que j’ai retiré de cette Coupe du Monde, c’est une plus grande maturité en compétition, en plus de la grande satisfaction d’avoir réussi quelque chose qui n’avait jamais été atteint dans mon pays: un podium à un niveau mondial en arc classique. J’ai aussi l’impression que cet événement m’a permis de me faire connaître au monde. J’espère pou-voir le démontrer une nouvelle fois la saison prochaine.

Ce que j’espère pour 2008, c’est de me qualifier pour les Jeux Olympiques en bénéficiant de la meilleure préparation possible et en profitant de tout ce que j’ai appris en 2007. Mon rêve, c’est d’écrire l’histoire pour mon pays et pour mon peuple, de me faire plaisir durant les compétitions et de concourir avec tout mon cœur.

At first, I felt it was really difficult and boring. As I improved, I became more interested. I got my first medal at a regional competition, later on in the state championship, and then I

l y a un club de tir à l’arc juste à côté de notre maison en Inde: le Club de tir à l’arc Baranagar. J’avais l’habitude d’y aller l’après-midi seulement pour faire du fitness et

me libérer l’esprit. Un jour, l’entraîneur du club a demandé à mon père de m’inscrire aux cours de tir à l’arc, car il pensait que ma posture corporelle était adaptée au tir. C’est comme ça que j’ai commencé le tir à l’arc à l’âge de 9 ans. Pendant quelques jours, j’ai d’abord trouvé ce sport vraiment diffi-cile et ennuyeux, mais petit à petit c’est devenu intéressant. Plus tard, j’ai remporté ma première médaille dans une com-pétition régionale, puis une médaille dans mon Etat et une 3e place au niveau national. Mes performances n’ont cessé de s’améliorer, et à 16 ans, j’ai concouru pour la première fois au niveau international, aux Championnats du Monde de la Jeunesse 1996 à San Diego.

Au fil des ans, mes meilleurs résultats ont été une pre-mière place individuelle au Grand Prix EMAU à Antalya en 2005, et plus récemment mes médailles d’or à l’étape de Coupe du Monde de Douvres et à la Finale de la Coupe du Monde à Dubaï en 2007.

La Finale de Dubaï a été la meilleure expérience de tou-te ma carrière de tir à l’arc! Tirer au-dessus de l’eau m’a tout d’abord rendue un peu nerveuse, mais après le pre-mier jour, j’ai commencé à m’y habituer. Je n’avais jamais pensé pouvoir gagner le titre à Dubaï, mais je savais que je pouvais bien tirer. En arrivant en finale pour l’or, j’ai pensé que j’avais une chance, mais il m’a fallu attendre la toute dernière flèche du match pour m’imposer. En fait, je pen-sais avoir perdu le match à la dernière flèche, car mon ad-versaire, Choi Eun Young, avait besoin d’un 10 pour gagner. Quand l’annonceur a dit qu’elle avait tiré un 8 et que j’avais remporté le titre, je me suis sentie comme sur un nuage!

En rentrant en Inde, j’ai été surprise de voir la foule devant l’Aéroport de Calcutta (Kolkata), la ville où j’habite. Je n’avais jamais pensé que dans mon pays autant de per-sonnes savaient ce qu’est le tir à l’arc. Tous les médias et les chaînes de télévision étaient là. Je ne savais pas que tant de personnes s’y intéressaient et étaient au courant de mon exploit. Bien sûr, après ma victoire à Douvres, beau-coup de gens avaient commencé à me connaître, ainsi que

le tir à l’arc. Maintenant, il semble que près de 90%de la population connaît le cricket, mais aussi le tir à l’arc! C’est génial de voir que notre sport devient connu; c’est la meilleure chose que j’aie jamais éprouvée. De plus, des organisations et des gens impor-tants m’invitent pour célébrer ma victoire à la Finale de la Coupe du Monde. Cependant, ils s’attendent maintenant tous à ce que je gagne une médaille aux Jeux Olympiques. C’est tout ce dont je peux aussi rêver…

Over the years, my best results were: an individual first place at the Antalya European Grand Prix in 2005; and recently, my gold medals at the Dover World Cup and the Dubai World Cup Final in 2007.

The Dubai Final is the greatest experience I ever had in my whole archery life! At first, shooting over the water made me a little nervous, but after the first day I became used to it. I never thought I would win the title in Dubai, but I was confident that I could shoot well. After reaching the gold medal final, I thought I had a chance, but it came down to the very last arrow of the match. In fact, I thought I might lose the match on the last arrow— my opponent, Choy Eun Young needed a 10 to win. When the announcer said that she had shot an 8 and that I had won the title, I felt like I was on top of the world!

After returning to India, I was astonished to see the crowd outside the Kolkata Airport in my home town. I never thought that so many people knew about archery in our country, or that so many people were interested and knew that I had won the World Cup Final. This is the happiest thing I have ever experienced. All the media and TV news chan-nels were there. Of course, after my victory in Dover, many people started to learn about archery and me. In India, 90%of our population knows cricket, but now, they also know ar-chery! It is great that our sport is becoming so well known. Since my win, some important organizations and people have invited me to functions to cel-ebrate my World Cup Final vic-tory. However, they all expect that I will now win a medal at the Olympic Games. This, I can only wish for—it would be a dream come true…

e suis née le 6 août 1988 à Oulan-Oude en Russie. J’ai un frère prénommé Victor qui est plus âgé que moi et qui est aussi archer. Mon père et ma mère sont mes entraîneurs.

Mon père s’appelle Konstantin Erdyniyev et ma mère Gerelma Erdyniyeva. Elle a arrêté le tir en 2005, et maintenant elle m’en-traîne. Ma mère a trois frères qui sont tous archers (Balzhi-nima Tsyrempilov, qui a gagné la Finale de la Coupe du Monde à Dubaï, Belikto et Dorzho), et trois sœurs qui ne font pas de tir à l’arc. Mon grand-père et ma grand-mère (les parents de mon père) sont également entraîneurs. En d’autres termes, pres-que tous les membres de ma famille sont archers!

J’ai commencé le tir à l’arc en 2000 quand j’étudiais en septième année à l’école (en Russie, nous avons onze an-nées d’école). Je ne peux pas dire que le tir à l’arc a été facile pour moi. Durant les trois premières années, je n’ai pas obtenu de bons résultats. Je pense que j’ai commencé à bien tirer et à aimer ce sport quand j’ai participé pour la première fois à la Coupe d’Europe Juniors en France en 2004. Là, j’ai pris la quatrième place et j’ai remporté la médaille d’argent par équipe. Dès cet instant, j’ai presque toujours pris part aux compétitions avec l’équipe nationale junior ou senior.

I started shooting in 2000 when I was in the seventh grade. (In Russia we have eleven grades in school.) I can’t say, that archery was easy for me—the first three years I did not have high results. I think, I started to shoot well and to love this sport in 2004 when, for the first time, I partici-pated at the Junior European Cup in France. I placed fourth and I won the silver medal in team. Since that time, I have almost always been in competitions with either the junior or senior national team.

In 2006, I participated in my last junior competition. It was the Junior World Championships in Merida, Mexico, where we won the silver medal in team. It was my favourite competition! At that time, the World Cup Final 2006 was also in Merida. I never thought that I would be participating in the same World Cup Final the following year. In 2006, I also participated at my first competition at the senior level—the World Cup Stage 1 in Porec (CRO). I believe I was ranked 25 or 26.

The year 2007 was the most successful for me! I did not expect that it would be so good. Usually, it is very hard to adapt when a young archer moves to the senior national team after juniors. With the higher level of competition, I was prepared for the most awful results. Nevertheless I tried to shoot as good as possible—and it worked!

In Leipzig, at the World Championships, I took third place. During the finals, I was very excited, as I felt a big respon-sibility on myself and I had never seen so many fans. I con-sider this medal my biggest achievement, but I will not rest on my illusions. I understand that I won this medal because I had good luck not only good shooting. In general, in ar-chery, and in all kinds of sports, you must have some luck at some key moments. Nevertheless, I believe, that, “good luck smiles to courageous people.”

In November last year, I competed in the World Cup Final in Dubai. Everything was pleasant—it was very beautiful and I liked the place very much. It is a pity that I was ill (cold) during the competition, therefore, almost everyday I had to stay in my room. I liked shooting on water, especially at the practice field—the first day, it was a little bit scary, so on the second day they increased the platform at the shooting line. In Dubai, there were four archers in each category—the most important thing for me was to not be the fourth. I succeeded in this goal so I am very happy. And of course, I am very glad that my uncle Balzhinima won. But I can’t say that I didn’t expect that, because I believe he is the best archer in the world!

The year 2008 is very important for me because it is the year of the Olympic Games. I hope to compete as well as in 2007 and my biggest dream (I think every sportsman has the same dream) is to get to the Olympic Games in Beijing.



En 2006, j’ai participé à ma dernière compétition ju-nior. C’était aux Championnats du Monde Juniors à Mérida au Mexique, où j’ai gagné la médaille d’argent par équipe. C’était ma compétition préférée! A ce moment-là, il y avait la Finale de la Coupe du Monde 2006 et je n’aurais jamais pensé participer à cette même Finale de Coupe du Monde l’année suivante. En 2006, j’ai aussi pris part à ma première compétition au niveau des seniors. J’ai participé à la Pre-mière Etape de la Coupe du Monde à Porec, en Croatie, et je crois que je m’y suis classée 25e ou 26e.

L’année 2007 a été couronnée de succès pour moi! Je ne m’attendais pas du tout à ce qu’elle soit si réussie. En général, quand un jeune archer passe dans l’équipe natio-nale senior après les juniors, le niveau de compétition y est beaucoup plus élevé et c’est difficile de s’y adapter. J’étais donc prête pour les plus mauvais résultats auxquels j’aurais pu m’attendre dans les compétitions seniors. Mais j’ai toujours donné le meilleur de moi-même et ça a fonc-tionné!

Aux Championnats du Monde de Leipzig, j’ai pris la troi-sième place. J’étais très tendue durant les finales, car je ressentais une grande responsabilité sur mes épaules et je n’avais jamais vu autant de spectateurs. Je considère cette médaille comme ma plus grande réussite, mais je ne vais pas me reposer sur mes lauriers. J’ai compris que j’avais gagné cette médaille grâce à la chance et pas seulement à de bons tirs. En général, en tir à l’arc comme dans tous les sports, il faut un peu de chance à des moments-clés. Mais malgré tout, je crois que «la réussite sourit aux gens cou-rageux».

A la fin novembre de l’année dernière, j’ai participé à la Finale de la Coupe du Monde à Dubaï. Tout s’est bien passé pour moi. C’était très beau et j’ai beaucoup aimé cet en-droit. C’est dommage que j’aie été malade (rhume) durant la compétition, car j’ai dû rester dans ma chambre presque tous les jours. J’ai adoré tirer au-dessus de l’eau, surtout sur le terrain d’entraînement. Le premier jour, j’ai même eu un peu peur, et la plateforme où se trouvait la ligne de tir pour l’entraînement a été agrandie lors de la deuxième journée. Comme il y avait quatre archers dans chaque ca-tégorie à Dubaï, le plus important pour moi était de ne pas terminer quatrième. J’ai atteint mon objectif, et je suis donc très heureuse. Bien sûr, je suis très contente de la victoire de mon oncle Balzhinima. Mais je ne peux pas dire que je ne m’y attendais pas, car pour moi il est le meilleur archer au monde!

L’année 2007 fut la meilleure de ma carrière! L’année d’avant, j’étais déjà heureux de ma 3e place à la Finale de la Coupe du Monde. En 2007, j’ai eu la chance de gagner la Fi-nale de la Coupe du Monde à Dubaï, mais j’ai aussi très bien tiré durant toute l’année. Je me suis qualifié grâce à deux premières places et une deuxième place dans les Etapes de Coupe du Monde. Dans les moments les plus durs et cruciaux de cette période et principalement à Dubaï, j’ai toujours es-sayé de rester concentré sur mon travail afin d’éviter de faire de mauvais tirs, et quand je perdais ma concentration ou que mes nerfs me trahissaient, j’ai prié Dieu de toutes mes forces pour qu’il m’aide. Ensuite, je me concentrais à nouveau avec plus de force pour tirer les meilleurs scores

The year 2007 has been the best of my career! The pre-vious year I was happy with my 3rd place at the World Cup Final. In 2007, I was fortunate to win the World Cup Final in Dubai but I also shot well all year long. I qualified with two first places and a second place in the World Cup stages. During the toughest and crucial moments of this period and mainly in Dubai, I always tried to focus to avoid missing any shot, and when I lost concentration or nerves betrayed me, I begged God with all my strength to help me, and then I focused and concentrated again with more power to shoot the best scores I could. In that way, I was able to overcome many difficulties in many critical moments and I think that at the end, everything went very well.

My best memories about the Dubai Final are: the excel-lent hotel, the impressive modern architecture of the city, the wonderful beaches, the outstanding organization and the semi-finals and finals stage assembly—a shooting plat-form constructed over the water—and the great emotion and joy of winning this World Cup gold match for my country.

On my return to El Salvador, I was received with an ex-iting and amazing welcome! My country’s highest sports authorities came to the airport to wait for my arrival and, from the time the airplane doors opened they were there, ready to welcome me. They took me immediately, without passing through customs, to the VIP area where I found my parents, my whole family, a lot of TV, radio and newspaper journalists, many members of my Archery Federation, and a

mass of people all there to greet me. There was a cheerlead-ing squad outside the airport. I was driven in a limousine with police escort, followed by a parade of several vehicles, during the whole route to the city. There were many people with banners screaming and greeting me as I passed next to them. I was received like a National Hero and people were telling me that they were very proud to be Salvadoran be-cause they had a World Cup Champion. It was something really fabulous and after all that, I was welcomed in the President’s house where the President of my country pub-licly congratulated me and gave me recognition for winning the World Cup Final. This has been a wonderful experience.

My expectations for 2008 are several, but have nothing to do with a baby; they are only related to my sports career and family. I hope to build my own style house, on some land in a very cool neighborhood in the mountains near the city. I also want to have very good results in all the tourna-ments I will compete in, especially in the Meteksan Archery World Cup 2008. I hope to win the World Cup trophy again!

possibles. De cette manière, j’ai été capable de surpasser de nombreuses difficultés dans des moments critiques et je crois qu’à la fin tout s’est très bien passé.

Mes meilleurs souvenirs de la Finale de Dubaï sont: le superbe hôtel où nous avons été hébergés, l’impression-nante architecture moderne de la ville, les magnifiques pla-ges, l’organisation remarquable et les installations mises en place pour les demi-finales et finales, en particulier la plateforme de tir construite au-dessus de l’eau, et la grande émotion et la joie de gagner cette finale de Coupe du Monde pour mon pays.

A mon retour au Salvador, on m’a réservé un accueil incroyable! Les plus hautes instances sportives de mon pays sont venues à l’aéroport attendre mon arrivée, et dès l’ouverture des portes de l’avion, leurs représentants étaient prêts à m’accueillir. Ils m’ont emmené, sans passer par la douane, dans la zone VIP où j’ai retrouvé mes parents. Toute ma famille, de nombreux journalistes de la télévision, de la radio et de la presse écrite, de nombreux membres de la Fédération de Tir à l’Arc et beaucoup d’autres gens étaient présents pour m’accueillir. Il y avait même une brigade de pom-pom girls à l’extérieur de l’aéroport. On m’a conduit dans une limousine escortée par la police et suivie par un défilé de véhicules le long de la route qui mène en ville. Il y avait plein de gens avec des banderoles qui criaient et me saluaient quand je passais devant eux. J’ai été reçu comme un héros national et les gens me disaient qu’ils étaient fiers d’être salvadoriens, car ils avaient un Champion de Coupe du Monde. C’était quelque chose de fabuleux, et après tout cela, j’ai été accueilli dans la maison présidentielle où le président de mon pays m’a félicité publiquement et a re-connu mon mérite. Ce fut une expérience merveilleuse.

Mes attentes pour 2008 sont diverses, mais n’ont rien à voir avec un bébé. Elles ne concernent que ma carrière sportive et ma famille. Par exemple, j’espère construire une maison dans mon propre style, sur un grand terrain dans un quartier très calme dans les montagnes proches de la ville. Je veux aussi réussir de très bons résultats dans tous les tournois auxquels je prendrai part, et en particulier la Coupe du Monde Meteksan 2008. J’espère bien gagner de nouveau le trophée de Coupe du Monde!

’ve been asked to write some lines about myself, about my archery life so far and a resume of the 2007 sea-son. It is not easy to know where to start and what to

write, and what might be of interest for you as readers. So I guess I’ll just write the things that I would like to learn about other archers. I’ve been an archer since the age of 10, which means that I celebrate 25 years as an archer this year. So now you all know how old I am! I live on the west coast of Sweden.

For 2007, Mats Inge, who is my husband and coach, and I discussed what to focus on this season. Since we fund al-most everything ourselves, we couldn’t go to all the inter-national tournaments, so we decided that I should focus on the World Cup events, and really try to qualify for the World Cup Final. The season started very early for us, with an in-door FITA event in Norway in February. I couldn’t have asked for better answers on my tests with new stiffer arrows and changes in technique, I started with a 1418 on the full FITA and several results over 350 on the 70-meter rounds.

Stage 2 of the World Cup in Varese was my first outdoor tournament, and I was very excited to be there. This was the first step on the way to the final in Dubai! We compound ladies were very fortunate with the competition schedule, since we didn’t have to endure the torrential rain that the men had to during their qualification. As the tournament started, I felt that my form was good, and now I just had to hope for some luck in the eliminations as well. As you all know, to be successful in a tournament you need to be in good form, have good equipment, and have a bit of luck in the eliminations. In the end, I found myself in the gold final together with Jamie Van Natta. It was a final that gave the spectators some extra excitement—parachute jumpers performing a display jump with red, green and white smoke landed next to the finals venue while we were shooting. That was a new experience! During the 12 arrows in the final, I managed to keep my focus on my shooting form, and I man-aged to win and take home 25 points in the World Cup rank-ing. So far so good! fois au dessus de 350 sur des Rondes à 70 mètres, je pen-sais que mes nouvelles flèches et quelques changements dans ma technique seraient bénéfiques.

L’Etape 2 de la Coupe du Monde à Varese était en fait ma première compétition extérieure et j’étais très excitée de vraiment commencer ma saison. Nous avons pu éviter les pluies torrentielles lors des qualifications et je me sentais bien pour les matchs à élimination. Les clés du succès sont d’être en bonne forme et de compter sur un bon équipement et un peu de chance. Je me suis retrouvée en finale contre Jamie Van Natta. Ce fut plutôt spécial avec une démonstra-tion de sauts en parachute avec de la fumée rouge, verte et blanche qui se sont posés juste à côté de notre terrain de tir. Heureusement, j’ai pu garder ma concentration durant les 12 flèches de la finale : première victoire et 25 points pour le Classement de Coupe du Monde. Tout allait bien!

La prochaine étape, à Antalya, est une épreuve que j’ai toujours appréciée et cette année était d’autant plus spé-cial que nous célébrions notre première année de mariage. J’étais contente de mes tirs mais j’ai perdu mon match en quart de finale d’un point car une de mes flèches s’est prise dans le vent. C’est comme ça avec le haut niveau des matchs, il n’y a pas de place pour une erreur. Je devais simplement rentrer à la maison et m’entraîner plus dans des conditions de vent pour me préparer aux prochains événements.

En arrivant à Douvres, le classement de Coupe du Monde montrait que six archers pouvaient encore prétendre aux trois dernières places pour Dubaï, Anna Kasantzeva étant déjà qualifiée. Au 2ème tour, j’ai eu un match très accroché avec Nicola Simpson et j’ai réussi à égaliser pour aller au tie-break. Au moment où nous allions tirer notre flèche, la pluie s’est mise à tomber. Nous avons tiré tant bien que mal et j’ai eu de la chance de marquer un neuf, comparé au huit de Nicola. En gagnant ce match, je m’assurais de la place pour Dubaï ! La finale à Douvres s’est à nouveau jouée contre Jamie Van Natta. Cette fois, Jamie était la plus forte, mais l’important est que nous étions toutes les deux qualifiées pour Dubaï avec Sofia Goncharova et Anna Kasantzeva.

Il y avait ensuite plusieurs mois de préparation avant la Finale de novembre. Comme vous pouvez l’imaginer, le temps n’est pas superbe en Suède pour les mois d’automne. J’ai dû combiner avec de l’entraînement en salle. D’une part, j’ai gardé un de mes arcs prêts pour des X10s et de temps en temps je tirais en salle à 18 mètres en visant haut dans le mur. C’est presque le même angle de tir que si je tirais à 70 mètres en extérieur. Comme ça, je gardais le bon geste. J’ai aussi tiré quelques tournois en salle avec des matchs pour me pré-parer mentalement. Finalement le grand voyage pour Dubaï

Next leg was in Antalya, and I was looking forward to the tournament since I have always enjoyed the tournaments there. This year was a bit special for me and my husband since we celebrated our first anniversary during the week in Antalya. The tournament went well, and I was happy with the way I performed. I lost my match in the quarter final by just one point—I got stuck in the wind on one arrow. But that’s the way it is, there are no room for mistakes in the short matches we have today. I just had to go home and practise more in the wind to be better prepared for the next leg in Dover and the World Championships in Leipzig.

One week after Leipzig, we packed our car and drove to England. The World Cup ranking before this tournament showed that there were at least six of us who had a chance to reach the final in Dubai. Anna Kasantzeva was already qualified, and the rest of us had to prove ourselves in Dover. After a tight match with Nicola Simpson I managed to get a shoot off. Just as we were about to shoot our single arrow, the sky opened and the rain poured down on us. We both managed to shoot a good shot, but I was fortunate enough to score a nine compared to Nicola’s eight. By winning this match the place for Dubai was safe! The gold final was once again a match between Jamie Van Natta and me. This time Jamie was the strongest one and won the match. We both made it to Dubai, along with Sofia Goncharova and Anna Kasantzeva.

After that, came several months of preparation for the final in November. As you might guess, the weather in Swe-den is not ideal for outdoor archery in late September, Octo-ber and November so I had to think of other ways to prepare. One way was to keep one of my bows tuned for X10s and once every now and then shoot with it indoors at 18 meters aiming high on the shooting wall. This was almost exactly the same angle for the body as you have when shooting 70 meters outdoor. That way, I was able to maintain the shoot-ing form needed for shooting outdoors. I also shot a couple of indoor tournaments with finals, just to still be used to the match format and be prepared mentally for the finals. So finally, it was time for the trip to Dubai! I was really look-ing forward to it; however, I was a bit concerned about the flight since I now was almost six months pregnant. It went well and my husband and I arrived in Dubai totally focused on the final. The venue at the hotel was great! The FITA staff had made a practice and a competition venue over the wa-ter and it looked great.

Finally, it was Saturday and time for the 24 arrows that the entire season had been about. In the semi-final I felt very confident and excited, but in the first two ends I didn’t

s’annonçait. Je me suis sentie un peu nerveuse avec le vol car j’étais enceinte de six mois. Tout s’est néanmoins bien passé et c’était déjà une grande émotion de voir le magnifique ter-rain sur l’eau et le superbe complexe hôtelier à l’arrivée.

Le jour de la Finale tout allait se jouer sur 24 flèches… Toute une saison allait culminer avec ces 24 flèches ! J’étais confiante et enthousiaste pour la demi-finale mais je n’ai pas bien tiré dans les deux premières volées. J’étais donc menée par Anna et j’ai dû me battre pour égaliser en fin de match et obtenir le droit du tie-break décisif. La flèche que j’ai alors décochée est certainement une des meilleures de ma carrière et je suis arrivée en finale. Peut-être que j’étais un peu inquiète lorsque le bébé me donnait quelques coups de pied au début du match…

Pour la finale, j’étais totalement concentrée sur mon match contre Sofia. Mon coach de mari me rappelait de tirer simplement et avec une bonne exécution. Je dois dire que mes 11 premières flèches étaient aussi parfaites que je le pouvais. C’était un super feeling ! Avant ma dernière flèche, j’ai entendu le speaker annoncer que j’avais déjà gagné le match et je me suis un peu déconcentrée. C’est un senti-ment incroyable de tirer sa dernière flèche en pensant que l’on a atteint le but que l’on s’était fixé au début janvier. C’était une super expérience à partager avec Mats Inge (et le bébé) et en pensant que toute ma famille regardait la Finale à la télévision !

Quand nous sommes rentrés le jour d’après, j’ai essayé d’analyser la saison. Cependant, cette victoire me semblait encore irréelle et cela m’a pris quelque temps pour finale-ment descendre de mon nuage. A l’heure de l’évaluation, je dois dire que je suis très contente de mes chois en 2007.

Que nous réserve 2008 ? Je suis toujours en train de tirer quelques tournois locaux et je vais le faire autant que possible. Le bébé viendra début mars. Puis j’espère tirer quelques compétitions en extérieur, mais le bébé aura la priorité ! Peut-être nous reverrons-nous en fin de saison ?

Je vous souhaite à tous une superbe année de tir à l’arc en 2008 !

perform as well as I knew I could—I trailed Anna, and had to fight hard to tie the match. The shoot-off arrow was, how-ever, one of my best shots, and I managed to go on to the Gold Final. Maybe I was a bit concerned about the baby giv-ing me a few kicks in the beginning of the match…

When it was time for the gold medal match, against Sofia, I was totally focused on performing good shots and just fol-lowing my plan. I had great support from my husband who kept reminding me to keep it simple and just shoot good shots. I must say that the first eleven arrows of that match were as close to perfect as I can come. It was a great feeling. Before my last arrow I heard George announce that I had already clinched the match, which made it a bit difficult to keep my focus on the last arrow. But it was a great feeling to shoot the last arrow knowing that we had reached the goal we set early in January! It was a great experience to share with Mats Inge (and the baby) and also my family who were watching the final on TV at home.

When we sat on the plane home the day after, I tried to summarize the season and evaluate what we had done dur-ing the season to be as prepared as possible, but it was still a bit unreal. It took me a while after we got home before I really could make a serious evaluation. All in all, I can say that I’m very happy with the way we planned, performed, practised and competed during 2007.

So what about 2008 for us? I’m still shooting local tourna-ments, and my aim is to keep on as long as I can. The baby is expected early in March. Then I hope to shoot some outdoors this year, but the baby comes first! Who knows, maybe I’ll see some of you at some tournament later this year?

y name is Jamie Van Natta and I am thirty years old with a degree in Computer Science Engineering and a minor in Philosophy. I live in Toledo, Ohio, in the

United States of America, and 40 hours a week I am a sys-tems analyst for the University of Toledo. I am also a profes-sional archer. I am blessed to be able to travel the world and shoot my bow. Most recently, I have had the opportunity to visit some amazing places on the World Cup Circuit and I am happy to share some of my thoughts and feelings about the past years’ experiences.

Beaucoup de choses ont fait de cette année une année mémorable. Je suis allée faire de la plongée sous-marine pour la première fois de ma vie durant la Coupe du Monde à Antalya, en Turquie. Pendant les Championnats du Monde, j’ai fait un tour à pied dans la ville de Berlin, en Allemagne. J’ai pris part à deux matchs pour la médaille d’or dans les tournois de Coupe du Monde cette année. A Varèse en Italie, Petra Ericsson et moi avons eu l’étrange honneur de voir un parachutiste atterrir presque sur nous durant notre match de finale. Ce fut un exercice de concentration intéressant. A Douvres, je m’étais préparée pour la pire des météos, car on m’avait souvent dit qu’il y avait beaucoup de vent et de pluie en Angleterre à cette période de l’année. Bien sûr, les conditions ont été presque idéales pendant toute la durée de notre séjour là-bas. C’est à Douvres que j’ai finalement reçu ma première médaille d’or individuelle de Coupe du Monde et ma première montre Balmain, ce qui, après sept essais, fut un beau succès.

Le plus incroyable de tous les sites fut de loin celui de la Finale de la Coupe du Monde à Dubaï. Là-bas c’était vrai-ment luxueux, au-delà de tous mes rêves les plus fous. J’ai déjà séjourné dans de beaux hôtels et visité de magnifiques stations balnéaires, mais ici on avait le meilleur de chaque chose réuni en un seul endroit. L’hôtel nous a traités com-me des rois; le sol était immaculé avec des fleurs partout, où que l’on regarde; l’océan et la plage étaient bleu et blanc, simplement parfaits. Mon seul regret est de n’avoir passé que 78 heures dans cet endroit fabuleux.

Le site de la compétition de tir à l’arc à Dubaï était éga-lement unique. Je n’avais jamais tiré sur une plateforme au-dessus de l’eau. Les organisateurs ont trouvé une ma-nière géniale pour rendre le site accueillant tant pour les spectateurs que pour les archers. Il y avait de nombreux défis qui ont été relevés par des personnes ayant travaillé très dur pour que le tournoi soit réussi. J’aimerais remer-cier tous les organisateurs et travailleurs qui ont réalisé un événement si merveilleux. Je me souviendrai aussi très longtemps du dîner de clôture. C’était un superbe sentiment de réussite et de réunion que de voir tout le monde, archers, sponsors et organisateurs, dans un cadre intime s’amuser ensemble autour d’un bon repas et entre bons amis.

L’année prochaine également, de nombreuses expérien-ces passionnantes m’attendent. Je vais pouvoir retourner à Porec en Croatie et à Antalya, deux de mes endroits pré-férés sur le circuit. Je suis ravie d’aller en France, car je ne suis jamais allée là-bas, même si j’ai fait plusieurs années de français à l’école (c’est le moment de ressortir ces li-vres). Many things have made this a memorable year. I went scuba diving for the first time ever at the World Cup in Anta-lya, Turkey. While at the World Championships, I took a walk-ing tour of Berlin, Germany. I shot for two gold medals in the World Cup tournaments this year. In Varese, Italy, Petra Ericcson and I had the dubious honor of nearly having a para-chutist land on us during our final match. It made for an inter-esting exercise in concentration. In Dover, I came prepared for the worst weather imaginable because I had been told many times how windy and cold and rainy it was in England at that time of year. Of course, it was nearly perfect the entire time we were there. It was in Dover that I finally received my first World Cup Individual Gold Medal and Balmain watch, which, after 7 attempts, was a sweet success all it’s own.

By far the most amazing venue and location was the World Cup Final in Dubai. Truly, it was luxurious beyond my wildest dreams there. I have stayed in some nice hotels and been to some beautiful resorts but here was the best of ev-erything all in one place. The hotel treated us wonderfully; the grounds were immaculate with flowers everywhere you looked; the ocean and beach were blue and white and perfect. My only regret was that I had only 78 hours in this fabulous place.

The archery venue in Dubai was quite unique as well. I’ve never shot on a platform over water. The way that the or-ganizers made the venue friendly to spectators as well as archers was great. There were some challenges that were overcome with many people working very hard to make the tournament a success. I want to thank all the organizers and workers that made this event the beautiful thing that it was. I will also remember the closing dinner of the Final very fondly. It was a wonderful feeling of accomplishment and togetherness to see everyone, archers, sponsors and organizers, in an intimate setting enjoying themselves with good food and good friends.

connue comme un site de vacances populaire de ce côté de l’océan et je me réjouis de le voir de mes propres yeux. Et la possibilité de visiter une autre superbe ville à la fin de cette année pour la Grande Finale me fait sourire jusqu’aux oreilles. J’ai déjà participé à deux Finales de Coupe du Mon-de et comme on dit, “la troisième fois sera la bonne”.

J’essaie toujours de me souvenir de la chance que j’ai de faire ce que j’aime et de me rendre dans ces endroits exceptionnels, dont les autres gens de mon âge ne peuvent que rêver. J’aimerais encore une fois remercier ceux grâce à qui être archer aujourd’hui est aussi passionnant, mémo-rable et gratifiant.

Next year holds many exciting experiences as well. I will be able to return to both Porec, Croatia and to Antalya, two of my favorite places on the tour. I am delighted to get to go to France, as I have never been there, but took many years of French in school (time to get those books out again). The Dominican Republic has long been known as a popular vaca-tion location on this side of the ocean and I am eager to see it for myself. And I hope to visit another great city for the Final again. I’ve now been to two World Cup Finals and as they say, “the third time’s the charm.”

I try always to remember how lucky I am to be doing what I love, getting to perform in these amazing locations—that other people of my age can only dream of. I want to extend my sincerest thanks to those who make being an archer today so exciting and memorable and worthwhile.

La construction du site de compétition pour le tir à l’arc s’est terminée 20 jours avant l’événement. Lorsque nous avons eu le droit d’entrer sur le site, des centai-nes de choses devaient encore y être fai-tes. Entre-temps, la majorité de l’équipe travaillant sur le site de la compétition s’occupait du Tournoi International de Hockey 2007 qui se déroulait entre le 8

et le 12 août, également comme tournoi test. Se conformer au standard du “niveau olympique” était donc un immense challenge! Nous avons fait de grands efforts pour que tout soit prêt avant le début de la com-pétition.

Si on le compare avec ceux des Jeux Olympi-ques précédents, le stade de tir à l’arc de Pékin pré-sente des innovations. Le

stade principal est devenu plus “cha-leureux”, les spectateurs étant plus proches des compétiteurs. Cette

“relation intime” entre les différents acteurs du sport rend celui-ci plus interactif. Nous avons pu constater sur place que les archers tiraient très bien, ce qui a donné lieu à plus de tirs de barrage. Les spectateurs étaient d’autant plus heureux de la qualité du spectacle ! Certains jour-nalistes et collègues qui n’avaient jamais assisté à un tournoi de tir à l’arc m’ont même dit que le tir à l’arc était un sport intéressant qui pouvait être aussi divertissant que n’importe quel autre sport.

La performance des archers chinois a bien sûr joué un rôle très important dans la ferveur que le tir à l’arc a suscitée en Chine. Tous les matchs avec des archers chinois ont attiré l’attention de nombreux specta-teurs, quels que soient les résultats des Chinois. Quand Zhang Juanjuan a affronté l’Ukrainienne Viktoria Koval en quart de finale, il n’y avait alors plus aucune place libre dans le stade.

All matches with Chinese archers drew many spectators, no matter what results the Chinese archers obtained. When Zhang Juanjuan met Ukraine’s Viktoria Koval in the quarterfinals there was not a vacant seat in the stadium. This was the highlight of the tournament. Even though she lost to Ukraine’s Viktoria Koval by one point, people saw hope for the Chinese team in the Beijing Olympic Games. I wish the Chinese archers good luck in the upcom-ing Olympic Games.

important in evaluating changes and improvements for the Olympic Games. They reminded me to look at the quality of the competition organization and enjoyment of the sport from all perspectives—FITA Officials, athletes, coaches, me-dia and spectators.

There are eight months to go to be ready for the Beijing Olympic Games. There are a lot of details that need to be planned out and improved upon. The main areas and chal-lenges are:

Il reste 8 mois avant le début des Jeux Olympiques. Il y a encore de nombreux détails à régler et améliorer. Les principaux domaines et défis sont:

La coopération avec les délégués techniques et les autres officiels de la FITA a été excellente au cours des années passées. Je remercie la FITA pour ce qu’elle apporte dans la préparation des Jeux Olympiques de Pékin. Nous sommes vraiment une équipe! Je crois qu’à Pékin nous allons offrir les meilleurs Jeux Olympiques de tous les temps.

Archery. The plan describes a total of 24 Focus Areas within Archery that will be examined over the duration of the plan.

The implementation of the plan is structured in a way that a Working Group is formed for each of the 24 Focus Areas. This Working Group is responsible for examining the key issues at the core of each area and making concrete proposals for improvement. Once these proposals are fina-lised they are passed onto the Archery World Plan Steering Group and then to the FITA Council for approval and imple-mentation.

Lors des cours les participants ont bénéficié directe-ment de l’expérience d’ancien entraîneur national de Corée de l’entraîneur en chef du MEAC, ainsi que de son niveau expertise internationale.

Au début de l’année 2007, les Associations Continen-tales de Tir à l’Arc ont proposé un certain nombre d’en-traîneurs qu’elles souhaitaient former selon leur stra-tégie de développement. Il n’y a pas eut de candidats européens pour ce projet ; cependant la FITA a conduit en 2007 un programme d’assistance spécifique aux pays de l’est qui sont les pays européens ayant les plus impor-tant besoins. Ce programme comportait une formation d’entraîneurs.

Ces séminaires ont été organisés selon le nombre d’en-traîneurs et leur niveau sur la base des standards FITA. La priorité a été donnée aux entraîneurs des Associations Mem-

At the beginning of 2007, the Continental Archery Associa-tions suggested a number of coaches that they would like to educate depending on their development strategy. FITA Devel-opment Department did not receive any proposal from EMAU for this project. However FITA had already a 2007 specific developmental program towards Eastern European Countries, which are the countries with the greatest needs in Europe at the moment. A coaching course was part of that program.

The courses have been organized based on the number of coaches and their level, according to FITA standards. Pri-ority has been given to coaches from Member Associations that had attended international events or Olympic Games few times or never.

The “Olympic Solidarity Scholarship Program – Sport Spe-cific Training for Coaches” supported most of the coaches attending this course. As per agreement between the “In-ternational Foundation for the Development of Archery” (FIDTA) and Olympic Solidarity, for every country that has two participants, FIDTA financially supported one of the coaches. Instruction, travel, meals, room and some pocket money were offered to each participant.

In addition, considering that most of the countries the coaches come from have very limited possibilities to ac-quire equipment, FIDTA offered a Level 1 or 2 Equipment Kit

aluminum to carbon material), but the consequences were that the bows could not withstand the amount of energy left over from releasing the shot. There were many bow failures in the beginning of making the equipment much faster. In other words the magnesium riser was breaking more and more frequently.

Although magnesium is light and superb at shock and vibration absorption, this material could not withstand the amount of energy required to launch such a light arrow and harsh shooting string material. So the com-panies looked for a better material and solid aluminum became the norm. Although aluminum was able to with-stand the damaging energy vibrations of a faster arrow, it was a much heavier material and had poor shock and

vibration qualities. However, this was the main material used for 20+ years, mainly because CNC aluminum was reasonably less expensive and if built correctly, would withstand years of punish-ment.

For over 30 years carbon material was considered to be used for a riser, but in the early years of development it was very expensive and

History of the riser materialshe history of the manufactured aluminum take-down riser began in the early 1970’s. Although some alumi-num risers were built before this date, most were ter-

ribly expensive and was not sold in any large quantity. Plus, the word “take-down” was used loosely. It required bolts and a good length of time to put the bow together and take it apart. In 1972 the first mass built manufactured aluminum take-down riser was used at the 1972 Olympics winning both the Men’s and Women’s Gold Medal. Before this most bows were one piece wooden bows. Although there were some wooden take-down bows, again, this type of bow was not used very often.

This first aluminum riser was a magnesium material constructed using a mould. Thus they melted the mate-rial down and poured it into a cavity to solidify. This method became the accepted method to use in the 1970’s and early 1980’s, until an attempt to increase the speed of the ar-rows came along. Kevlar and then Dyneema string mate-rial was used to increase the speed of the arrow (which happened to change from

The first shot (Pic. 2) is an aluminum riser with identi-cal limbs (68” and 42#). The second shot (Pic. 3) is the IN-NOCARBON riser with the same limbs. Notice the difference between the two.

The graph above shows the mapping of the limb tip move-ment. You can see the limb tip movement with the INNOCAR-BON riser (right graph) has a more narrow and consistent movement. In other words, the INNOCARBON riser absorbs the shock more efficiently and effectively which makes limb movement far more stable which in turn creates a much more stable environment.

B) Vibration reductionThe following graph shows the vibration acceleration while shooting. You can see the INNOCARBON riser’s vibration is remarkably small and quickly is reduced compared to the standard riser of today.

This vibration does not affect the flight of the arrow but a stable bow with less vibration gives the archer a better feel to the shot which will give them the confidence of executing a more perfect shot. This feeling allows the archer to focus more precisely and allows the archer to control the shot more

However, Win & Win has found a way to develop and manu-facture an all carbon riser called the INNOCARBON. They have been able to develop a reasonably priced all carbon riser with incredible strength and durable properties. Thus starting a new chapter in the history of manufacturing an all carbon recurve riser.

Features of the Carbon riserCompared to an aluminum riser, the carbon riser is stronger, lighter and has straighter properties and above all, it is far better at energy absorption. The following is an explanation of the great merits over the aluminum riser:

First is stability. This superior tolerance against shock at the moment of shooting allows the arrow to group tighter due to unnecessary movement caused by energy vibration.

Second is vibration absorption. When an arrow is shot out of a bow, it requires energy. The bow has a lot of ener-gy and the mass weight of the arrow absorbs that energy to a point. The remaining energy or excess energy has to go somewhere so most of the time it goes to the sight, stabilizers and even the archer’s bow hand. (That’s why things break). Since the carbon material is able to absorb most of this “excess” energy, the feel is very noticeable and it gives the archer more confidence since the shot

“feels” good.Third is the accuracy. The INNOCARBON riser makes the

center shot more accurate. The riser has less than a 0.1mm twist compared to an aluminum riser which has a plus/mi-nus 4mm twist allowance. This super accurate design rarely has an effect on center-shot. With WIN&WIN’s advanced knowledge this incredible molding technique is possible.

A) StabilityLimb tip movement, outside of the linear plane, at the mo-ment of the shot affects bow stability. When the movement is larger and irregular, unnecessary movement and vibra-tion is increased (outside of a linear plane). Essentially it means that bow movement, outside of the linear plane, can affect stability. In addition, tip movement affects the string movement. So, when tip movement happens outside of this linear plane, it causes the string to oscillate larger than necessary which causes poor arrow flight and a stronger possibility of hitting your arm.

The following graphs show limb tip movement which was taken with a high speed camera at 4000 frames per second. This moment in time is 0.2 seconds.

efficiently. The concentration is far easier and more relaxed. This allows for much better grouping by all archers!

C) AccuracyAccuracy here means limbs and riser alignment are aligned properly. Accuracy decreases when inconsistent alignment occurs. Incorrect center shot causes unnecessary move-ment while the shot is being made. This of course, affects arrow grouping.

Most bows can be adjusted by limb and riser screws. However, even though the center shot appears to be cor-rect when adjusting these screws, the string is not exactly in the middle of the limbs like the picture below after sev-eral shots (a). Most bow setups look similar to either (b) or (c) after several shots. This is particularly common with vir-tually all aluminum riser setups.

Part of the reason is limb straightness but more impor-tantly is the riser or handle twisting. This is especially the case of the aluminum riser with a standard tolerance accep-tance of plus/minus 0.4mm. Rarely do the risers go out more than 1mm. Even though the limbs can be exactly straight and the riser is slightly twisted around 0.3mm, there is no way to adjust the exact center-shot. This is because the riser has an effect on the limb twisting while shooting the shot. Pictures b and c show this action well. If the tip is not truly centered before, during and after the shot the limbs will twist when drawing and will cause unnecessary movement.

WIN&WIN’s molding knowledge and their proprietary carbon straightness capability created with INNOCARBON is less than a 0.1mm twist.

The developed riser technology like this allows for a more, truer center shot which is easier to set up, more accurate to tune and minimizes the unnecessary movement all at the same time. A revolutionary break through in riser technology.

The structure of the INNOCARBON riser is the secret of its successSome time ago, the carbon riser struc-ture was more Urethane inside with a carbon wrap on the outside surface. This absorbed the vibration of the shot somewhat but the stress was just too much for a simple wrap of carbon on the surface area. The breakage was constant, thus too cost prohibitive to offer this type of riser on the market.

Vladimir Escheev of Russia shot a world record with a carbon wrapped riser in 1990 with a 1352.. This Russian prototype carbon riser was virtually one of a kind, but it did show the potential of an all carbon riser. Sometimes a riser of this type would actually bend or deform which would cause a decrease in the speed of the arrow.

However, the INNOCARBON riser design has two all carbon frames which can withstand the damaging vibrations effec-tively and maximize the durability. Our testing procedure re-quires the riser to be under stressful conditions of 2.5 times more vibration and shock than a normal shot would produce. After 200,000 shots, the Innovative INNOCARBON riser had no change in performance or structural integrity.

Superior technological INNOCARBON riser solves the economic burdenAlthough Aluminum was heavy and it couldn’t absorb vibra-tion as good as magnesium, aluminum was the choice of the bow manufacturers for over 20 years. During this time, vari-ous devices were used to dampen the shock and vibration of the bow. This continued to add more weight to the bow which made it extremely heavy. Many people thought that the heavier the bow the more stable it was. However, it was not the fundamental solution to the problem, it was more like a band aid to the problem. Carbon has been discussed for several years and tested as an alternative solution to this weight and vibration problem. However, there was very little success due to several reasons:

Composite material is very costly, especially using aero-space materials. It takes several different facilities to have this carbon built and designed to fit the needs of the all carbon riser. The cost is very high due to the many differ-ent facilities used. You also need to have a very high tech-nological mold and a specific type of press machine which requires some custom design work. And finally and most important of all is the scientific knowledge and ingenuity.

As a result of all the research and development WIN&WIN has finally overcome all the problems with using carbon as a riser and are happy to launch another riser called the PROAC-CENT riser. For another consecutive year WIN&WIN is able to produce this new car-bon riser at a more economical price due to the rising popularity of carbon risers. This not only encourages the popularity but also contributes to the competitive results in the world of sport in archery.

Even though fi rearms replaced the bow and arrow on the fi eld on battle, shooting a bow and arrow was still practiced and it became a discipline based upon shooting an arrow the greatest distance. With the use of an Ottoman recurve composite distance bow, archers were able to shoot distances that today modern technology bows cannot reach. Some of the records have not been broken in over 400 years.
