Dear Friends of Archery,

he Beijing 2008 Olympic Games are just around the cor-ner and with the great combined efforts of FITA and the Beijing Organizing Committee we are ready to present

a truly outstanding archery competition. This time we will have the largest number of participating nations ever at an Olympic archery competition. Isn’t this a part of the Olympic philosophy?

As you know, we have just completed another success-ful series of World Cup stages, which will conclude with the Final in September in Lausanne. We are very happy that archery is able to present such a great example. Now we have a new bid process for hosting our World Cup Finals and we recently announced the next three World Cup Finals, through 2011.

We have a new era dawning for archery with the Youth Olympic Games, which will be held in 2010 in Singapore. We believe that this new opportunity will be a great stimulus to the development of youth archery around the world. And speaking of youth archery, we are all looking forward to the Youth Archery World Championships to be held in Antalya, Turkey, in October this year. We anticipate record participa-tion at this event.

As you can see, 2008 is turning into an extremely im-portant year for archery and archers: the Olympic Games in Beijing, the World Cup Final, and the Youth World Champion-ships altogether provide us all with great opportunities for growth, development and excellence.

Chers amis du tir à l’arc, es Jeux Olympiques de Beijing 2008 arrivent à grands pas et grâce aux efforts combinés de la FITA et du Co-mité Organisateur de Beijing nous sommes prêts à pré-

senter une competition de tir à l’arc grandiose. Cette fois-ci, nous aurons un nombre de nations participantes encore ja-mais atteint dans la compétition de tir à l’arc aux J.O. N’est-ce pas cela la philosophie des Jeux Olympiques ?

Comme vous le savez, nous venons aussi de terminer avec succès une série d’étapes de la Coupe du Monde, qui nous amènent à la Finale en septembre à Lausanne. Nous sommes très fiers que le tir à l’arc soit capable de présenter de si belles compétitions. Nous avons maintenant un nou-veau processus de sélection pour les villes candidates à l’organisation des Finales de Coupe du Monde et nous avons pu d’ores et déjà annoncer les lieux de nos Finales pour les trois prochaines saisons, soit jusqu’en 2011.

Une nouvelle ère du tir à l’arc s’ouvre avec l’arrivée des Jeux Olympiques de la Jeunesse, qui auront lieu en 2010 à Singapour. Nous pensons que cette nouvelle opportunité soulèvera une grande motivation pour le développement du tir à l’arc chez les jeunes à travers le monde. A ce pro-pos, nous nous réjouissons des prochains Championnats du Monde de Tir à l’Arc de la Jeunesse qui se tiendront à Anta-lya, Turquie, en octobre de cette année. Nous attendons un nouveau record de participation lors de cet événement.

Comme vous le voyez, l’année 2008 est très importante pour le tir à l’arc et les archers: les Jeux Olympiques de Bei-jing, la Finale de la Coupe du Monde et les Championnats du Monde de la Jeunesse nous offrent de grandes opportunités d’expansion, de développement et d’excellence.

never happened before—but who can beat Park Sung-Hyun? And let’s not forget Marco Galiazzo, who recently has been in 2004 form—if not even better!

We will know at the end of the seven days of competition at the magnificent Archery Field in the Beijing Olympic Green. The field looks different from the last Olympics—no venue will ever replace the unique Panathinaiko Stadium which through its his-

Le stade de Beijing est le fruit du nouveau concept consistant à avoir deux espaces de tir séparés. Cela per-met encore plus d’attention sur un match unique entre deux athlètes, mais aide surtout à améliorer la diffusion télévisée. Another major change from 2004 is that the 1/32 and 1/16 eliminations will be shot in succession. This means that the spectators can follow their favorites in two subsequent matches. It will also help the athletes keep their rhythm since they won’t have to wait until the following day for their next match.

The last change I would like to highlight is that the or-der of the competition will be changed—we will start with the team competitions. The first medals in Archery will be awarded on the 2nd and 3rd day of the Olympics, so there is a good chance that it will be one of the first medals for the NOCs concerned. This will give more media attention to our athletes who deserve it for their hard work.

Another reason the competition in Beijing will be great is that the Archery Green itself is going to be a place for many new records. At the Good Luck Beijing Test Event, the scores were very high and with the improvements made in the sta-dium since then, which provide even better protection from the wind, the scores are expected to be even higher.

Il y a donc de grandes chances pour que ce soit l’une des premières médailles pour les Comités olympiques natio-naux concernés. Cela amènera plus d’attention médiatique autour de nos athlètes, qui méritent cette récompense pour leur dur travail.

L’aspect le plus difficile pour les équipes sera de se préparer sur le plan mental pour aborder le terrain de la compétition sans se laisser impressionner par la vue. Ja-mais auparavant les gradins des spectateurs n’avaient été si près et si raides. Les archers se sentiront réellement au centre de l’attention des fans. Pour les archers qui n’ont pas participé aux épreuves tests, cet élément sera un challenge de plus et pourrait faire la différence dans le premier match. Bien sûr, comme par le passé, les archers pourront se fami-liariser avec le site, mais celui-ci n’est jamais pareil selon que les gradins soient vides ou remplis.

Je reviens maintenant à ma première question. Qui se-ront les prochains champions olympiques?

Ce qui est sûr, c’est que celui qui gagnera aura tiré plus de 60 000 flèches dans l’année écoulée, ce qui fait plus de 1500 flèches par semaine. Sinon il est impossible d’être as-sez constant pour gagner une médaille d’or olympique.

La deuxième chose qui est sûre, c’est qu’il est impossible avec le tir à l’arc d’aujourd’hui de déterminer exactement qui va gagner, pour la simple raison que la différence de

Now, coming back to my first question—who will be the next Olympic Champions?

The first thing is, whomever will win, it will be someone that most likely has shot more than 60,000 arrows during the last year—more than 1,500 arrows per week! Without this kind of practice, an archer cannot be consistent enough to win the Olympic gold medal.

The second thing is that in archery competitions to-day, it is impossible to determine exactly who will win—the reason is that the difference of the levels of the 64 athletes is so small that anything can happen. This, com-bined with the fact that more than 50 countries from all 5 continents will compete in Beijing, makes it difficult to pick a winner.

La FITA est très heureuse que notre sport grandisse et que de plus en plus de pays puissent prétendre à des médailles. Les raisons de ce succès sont certainement de meilleures structures dans nos fédérations nationales avec des archers et des entraîneurs plus professionnels. C’est un fait que certains des pays plus traditionnels qui ont réussi de grands résultats par le passé doivent s’adapter à ce pro-fessionnalisme s’ils veulent conserver leurs performances de pointe.

Le BOCOG, le CIO, l’ASOIF et la FITA ont fait de leur mieux pour faire de ces Jeux Olympiques de Beijing 2008 les meilleurs Jeux jamais organisés pour le tir à l’arc. Nous nous réjouissons de cette compétition qui promet d’être passionnante !

FITA is very pleased that our sport is growing and that more and more countries are claiming medals—the result of better structure at the national level and more profes-sional coaches and archers. The fact is that some of the more traditional countries, that in the past have had good results, have to adapt to the higher level of professionalism to maintain their high performance.

BOCOG, the IOC, ASOIF and FITA have done their best to make these Beijing 2008 Olympic Games the best ever for ar-chery, and we look forward to a very exciting competition!

s the host of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, China is entitled to have full men’s and women’s teams compet-ing in the Games. Personally, I obtained my selection by

winning 6th place in the FITA World Championships in Ger-many 2007. In addition, I attended three national selection competitions in 2007 and another three in 2008.

j’espère élever mon niveau pour faire face à ce défi. Je pense que si l’on veut gagner une médaille aux Jeux Olympiques, il faut se préparer sur tous les plans. Le mental est d’une im-portance vitale, qui détermine la victoire ou l’échec.

The Olympic Games, which are held every four years, is the grandest sport gathering and a big stage for all athletes to realize their dreams. I feel very proud and fortunate to be taking part in the Olympic Games that will be held in Beijing, China in 2008. When the major event comes, we should be prepared to face the challenge in a proper way. The Athens 2004 Games left me with a little bit of regret; however, they also inspired me to work harder for the glory of my country during the Beijing Olympics.

t was a long road for me to qualify for the upcoming Olym-pic Games. I believe that the Korean selection procedure for the Olympics is more complicated and longer than

other countries. The process started in March 2007 and eight archers were selected last November. Then, we cut down to the four final archers in early April 2008. Finally, at the end of May 2008, the association chose the three start-ers and the alternate. It was a long and tough path. Korean

Alors que les Jeux Olympiques se rapprochent, je me concentre principalement sur mon plan d’entraînement, qui a été organisé spécialement par l’Association Coréenne de Tir à l’Arc et l’équipe nationale de Corée pour les Jeux Olympiques. Je m’entraîne aussi individuellement si je sens à un moment ou un autre que je ne suis pas à mon meilleur niveau.

Tous les archers concourront dans les mêmes conditions au Stade olympique de Beijing; je ne pense pas que le stade présente des avantages ou des inconvénients pour les ar-chers. Cependant, j’ai comme expérience la participation au Tournoi Test de l’année passée, et j’ai vu que les gradins des spectateurs sont très proches de l’espace des archers pour les matches de finales. Je pense que les archers devront être prêts tant au niveau technique que mental pour gagner des matches à Beijing.

Les Jeux Olympiques d’Athènes en 2004 ont été mes premiers Jeux, et j’étais plutôt tendue. Mais j’étais aussi très motivée de tirer dans le Stade Panathinaiko “dans une ambiance surchauffée”. Chaque fois que je repense à Athènes, je ressens l’angoisse de ces moments. Cependant

I believe that five other archers, who failed to be selected, would be able to achieve good results at these Olympics if they could have come. As the Olympic Games get closer, I am basically focused on the training schedule, which is specially organized by the Korean Archery Association and the Korean national team for the Olympics. I am also training individually to make up any deficiency, if I feel that I am not at my top level at any given time.

All the archers will face the same circumstances at the Olympic stadium in Beijing; I do not think the stadium will be an advantage or disadvantage to anyone. However, I had the experience of the Test Event last year and I saw that the spectators’ stands are very close to the archers for the final matches. I think the archers will have to be ready both tech-nically and psychologically to win their matches in Beijing.

However, the tension affected me in a good way and I actually con-centrated even more on the matches and I achieved good results. Now that I have accumulated many international tournament experiences and know-how, in Beijing I will try to enjoy the tournament itself more.

Archery is a historical and interesting sport. In Korea, the sport of archery is next in popularity after soccer. It is my hope that every spectator—in the stands in Beijing or through the media—would be with the archers and feel the excitement of shooting.

he qualifications for the Olympic Games have been ex-citing. Italy first qualified a team during the World Cham-pionships in 2007. I am also fortunate to have won the

Individual World Championship. In 2008, there were the in-ternal selections. I guess I started out on the right foot with a victory at the World Cup Stage 1 in Santo Domingo. I am very glad that Elena Tonetta and Pia Carmen Lionetti are also coming to the Games—in Athens 2004, I was the only Italian woman that qualified—luckily in Beijing I won’t be lonely.

To prepare for the Games, I practice and work on both mental and technical training. Between sessions, I spend quality time with my three sons and my husband. It isn’t easy to find a balance but I try my best. During the last com-petitions, my results were fine, so I’m feeling quite relaxed.

After the intense training before the Olympics, I believe the most important skill to win the Beijing Olympics is to be focused during the competition. When you have to compete with strong opponents—and lately even the less famous ones can be a danger—you can’t afford any mistakes, otherwise you are out. The opponents’ level has increased a lot during the last few years, so I consider focus during matches to be of upmost importance.

Une expérience olym-pique est quelque chose d’unique. C’est complè-tement différent de l’at-

mosphère des Championnats d’Europe ou de la Coupe du Monde. Il y a toutes sortes de gens venus du monde entier, des athlètes de toutes les disciplines que l’on ne voit pas autrement qu’à la télévision.

Tout est grand et gigantesque, mais chaque événement olympique est différent du précédent. A Barcelone, par exemple, le village olympique était superbe et pendant les matches, j’étais très calme, je ne ressentais pas trop de pression. A Atlanta, tout était super et impressionnant: une organisation typiquement américaine! Nous nous sommes bien amusés au village olympique mais en ce qui concerne la compétition, mes entraîneurs m’ont mis beaucoup de pres-sion avant et après le tournoi: je n’étais pas relâchée inté-rieurement. De Sydney, je me souviens de chambres petites, mais j’ai un bon souvenir de la compétition. Si je n’avais pas été malade pendant un mois avant les Jeux, j’aurais atteint un meilleur classement que 7e. Mais je manquais d’énergie.

The Olympic experience is unique, completely different from the atmosphere of the European Championships and World Cup. There are people from all over the world, ath-letes competing in all disciplines, which you have only seen on TV.

Every Olympics is great and gigantic but each is different from the previous one. In Barcelona, for example, the Olym-pic village was gorgeous and during the matches I was very relaxed, without too much pressure. In Atlanta, everything was stunning and great—typical American organization! We had fun in the village but on the match field I felt a lot of pressure from my coaches both before and during the com-petition—I wasn’t mentally relaxed. In Sydney, I remember the small rooms but I have good memories of the compe-tition. If I would not have been ill for a month before the Games, I would have reached a higher place than seventh—I was short of energy.

Je me réjouis des Jeux Olympiques de Beijing. J’ai en-tendu parler des questions politiques et je suis désolée pour tous les problèmes des citoyens chinois. Cependant, ces questions devraient rester loin du sport: la politique ne devrait pas attendre les Jeux Olympiques pour s’en inquié-ter. Les athlètes travaillent dur pendant quatre ans pour atteindre les Jeux et ne devraient pas être impliqués dans des affaires éloignées du sport.

qualified for my third United States Olympic Team and will have the honour of representing my country in Chi-na this August. I qualified through a complicated trials

procedure that included three series of competitions that ended in May. After the trials, I took two weeks off with rest and light training; and I went home to visit my family that I had not seen since Christmas. Then the work began again for the Olympic training.

Getting to the Olympics isn’t something you can do by yourself. Many people have helped to give me this oppor-tunity. I want to say thank you to my friends, family, and sponsors that have helped to make my Olympic dreams reality.

In the Sydney 2000 Olympics I was fortunate to win an individual silver medal and a team bronze medal. We had a great team and gave a great performance. In 2004, Athens was a bittersweet experience for me. In my individual quar-terfinal, I lost by one point to Marco Galiazzo, who went on to win the gold. At one point in the match when it was my 40 seconds to shoot, the wind was very strong and would not let up. With about 10 seconds left on the clock, I aimed right in the 5 ring and hit low left in the 8 ring. Seconds later the wind stopped and Marco shot a 10. On my last arrow of the match, I needed a 10 to tie. My form felt like I shot a 10 but the wind took the arrow to the 9 ring. The wind was just not my friend that day but Marco gave a gold medal perfor-mance of which he can be very proud.

Alors qu’il ne restait plus qu’un dizaine de secondes, j’ai visé le cercle du 5 mais j’ai tiré en bas à gauche dans le 8. Quelques secondes plus tard, le vent s’est arrêté et Marco a tiré un 10. J’avais besoin d’un 10 à mon dernier tir pour égaliser. D’après la trajectoire de ma flèche, je pensais avoir tiré un 10, mais le vent l’a déviée vers le 9. Le vent n’était simplement pas de mon côté ce jour-là, mais Marco a réussi une performance digne de la médaille d’or dont il peut être très fier.

Dans la compétition par équipe d’Athènes, l’équipe mas-culine des Etats-Unis a battu la très forte équipe italienne alors composées des champions du monde en titre en salle (Di Buo) et extérieur (Frangilli), et le nouveau champion olympique (Galiazzo). Je pensais que notre équipe tirait as-sez bien ce jour-là pour gagner la médaille d’or, mais à la fin, il nous a manqué un point pour atteindre la finale pour l’or, puis deux points pour la médaille de bronze. Même si je suis rentré des Jeux Olympiques d’Athènes sans médaille, j’avais le sentiment d’avoir réussi une performance digne d’une médaille d’or.

Je suis très optimiste sur les chances de médaille de no-tre équipe à Beijing. Nous avons des archers qui ont déjà gagné quatre médailles olympiques en équipe masculine, et l’un de nos équipiers n’a encore jamais participé à des Jeux Olympiques! He has however, won an Indoor Youth World Championship with a compound bow and our Olympic tri-als. We have the perfect blend of youth, talent, composure, and experience. We are good friends and work well together. There is no one else I would rather have shooting on my team in China than Butch and Brady. I have an Olympic bronze and silver. It is no secret that I want to win the gold. I believe we have a team that is capable of doing it.

quement, je remets aussi un bloc de gros travail en prépara-tion physique avec de la musculation et une augmentation du nombre de séances d’aérobic. Du point de vue mental, un programme de préparation a été mis en place afin d’amélio-rer la gestion de la compétition et des émotions.

Je pense qu’arriver aux JO en étant dans les premiers de la Coupe du Monde cette année et avec une bonne place au classement mondial peut déstabiliser mes adversaires. Ce-pendant, je préfère ne pas tenir compte de ce facteur, car celui qui gagnera l’or est celui qui tirera le mieux ce jour-là. Je connais le terrain depuis la compétition Good Luck Bei-jing, c’est un bon avantage de pouvoir tester les installations olympiques un an avant le début de la “vraie” compétition.

Ce seront mes premiers Jeux Olympiques. Ce qui est sûr, c’est que ce sera une expérience inoubliable du point de vue relationnel, que ce soit entre les nations, les disciplines ou entre les athlètes. Je pense que l’esprit olympique est avant tout synonyme d’échange, de joie et d’amitié.

I think that going to the Olympics with a good world rank-ing after three World Cups so far this year could destabilize my opponents. However, I would prefer not to count on this because the one who will win the gold medal will be the best shooter that day. I am familiar with the Olympic Archery field, since I competed in the Good Luck Beijing Test Event. Actu-ally, it is a rather good advantage to experience the Olympic facilities one year before the “real” competition starts.

I will compete for the first time at the Olympic Games. I am pretty sure this will be an unforgettable experience regarding the relationships between the nations, the sports and the athletes. I also think the Olympic spirit means ex-change, joy and friendship!

An Olympic year is always special for any sport—the athletes rise to the occasion and deliver stellar performances. The four World Cup Stages that took place this spring in Santo Domingo (DOM), Porec (CRO), Antalya (TUR) and Boe (FRA) will remain memorable because they featured stunning locations and accomplishments—including numerous World Records. The stars of archery gave their best performances and were challenged by some young and talented athletes. At the end, the 16 best archers qualified for the World Cup Final in Lausanne (SUI), on 27 September. Many World and Olympic Champions will compete in Lausanne—guaranteeing a great show!

he Meteksan Archery World Cup 2008 started in Santo Domingo. Everybody remembers the warm welcome and magnificent beaches. Archery paid tribute to his-tory when the final matches were played in the Fortale-

za Ozama, the oldest fort of the New World! Moreover, the American compound men’s team broke the world record.

The World Cup final matches in Porec took place in the beautiful marina. France was honoured, when two of its young stars, Romain Girouille and Amandine Bouillot, burst on the scene and claimed victory; and again, when the French com-pound men’s team took the world record from the Americans.

Une année olympique est toujours particulière dans n’importe quel sport. Les athlètes en profitent pour offrir des performances de choix. Les quatre étapes de la Coupe du Monde qui se sont déroulées ce printemps à Saint-Domingue (DOM), Porec (CRO), Antalya (TUR) et Boé (FRA) resteront à jamais gravées dans les mémoires. Elles ont toutes offert des sites et des performances de rêve, dont plusieurs records du monde. Les stars du tir à l’arc se sont montrées à leur meilleur niveau, mais elles ont été défiées par de jeunes compétiteurs prometteurs. Au final, les 16 meilleurs archers se sont qualifiés pour le Finale de la Coupe du Monde qui aura lieu le 27 septembre prochain à Lausanne en Suisse. Plusieurs champions du monde et olympiques se retrouveront dans la capitale olympique. Le spectacle promet d’être sensationnel!

La Coupe du Monde s’est ensuite déplacée à Porec. Les fi-nales se sont déroulées dans le très beau port de la ville. La France a été à l’honneur grâce à deux de ses jeunes talents, Romain Girouille et Amandine Bouillot, qui se sont propul-sés sur le devant de la scène en remportant leur épreuve respective. L’équipe française en arc à poulies a aussi fait le spectacle en battant à son tour le record du monde réussi par les Américains.

L’Etape 3 de la Coupe du Monde a réuni nature et su-perbes résultats à Antalya. Les finales se sont littéralement déroulées sur la plage! On n’oubliera pas l’incroyable cou-de-à-coude entre l’Inde et la Corée lors des qualifications de la catégorie Classique Hommes. Les deux équipes battaient le record du monde, mais ce sont les Coréens qui s’impo-saient et sauvaient le prestige de leur pays, pour quatre petits points seulement... Yun Ok Hee (KOR) a également établi un nouveau record du monde à Antalya dans la ca-tégorie Classique Femmes sur un match, avec 119 points sur 120 possibles!

La dernière étape qualificative s’est déroulée à Boé, et pour la première fois de l’histoire du tir à l’arc, les finales se sont tirées de nuit. L’ambiance atteignit son paroxysme lorsque la foule s’est mise à hurler après chaque 10 réussi! Les Chinois ont prouvé qu’ils étaient prêts à tirer dans une chaude ambiance que tout le monde espère retrouver lors des Jeux Olympiques 2008 à Beijing!

Les trois meilleurs résultats des quatre étapes comp-taient pour le classement final de Coupe du Monde. Certai-nes victoires se sont jouées pour quelques millimètres sur

Stage 3 of the World Cup in Antalya saw the union of astonishing accomplishments and extraordinary natural scenery—the finals were literally on the beach! The tremen-dous competitions between India and Korea in Recurve Men was unforgettable—both teams broke the World Record but the Koreans held on to edge India by just four points. Yun Ok Hee (KOR) also broke the World Record for a match in Recurve Women, with 119 points out of a possible 120!

letes showed that they are ready and want to experience this atmosphere charged with excitement again during the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games!

The top three results from the four stages counted to-ward the World Cup ranking. In the end, some victories were decided by millimetres on targets that were 70 meters away. Nevertheless, the four best archers of the four categories have qualified for the World Cup Final in Lausanne, on 27 September. Here are the finalists and how they got there!

Recurve MenViktor Ruban (UKR) was 1st after qualifications in Porec and Boe. In Croatia, he only managed 6th place during the matches, but in France he went all the way! His comeback victory, concluded in the shoot-off, and qualified him for the Final in Lausanne! Romain Girouille did not wait until the last event to shine. He was 5th in Santo Domingo and won Stage 2 in Porec. The young, 20-year-old star became the de facto favourite for the Olympic Games. Both in Beijing and in Lausanne, he will compete against two exceptional Korean shooters—Im Dong-Hyun and Park Kyung-Mo—both current Team Olympic Champions. Im is the current Individual World Champion, took 3rd in Porec and won the Antalya stage. Park was the Individual World Champion in 1993, at age 18. In 2006, he won the World Cup Final, and he has been on the podium twice so far in the stages leading to this season’s World Cup Final.

Among the other archers that made the show in 2008, we would mention some young archers such as: Jayanta

En Croatie, il ne finissait que 6e après les matchs, mais en France, il parvenait à aller jusqu’au bout pour remporter l’étape! Cette victoire décidée en tir de barrage le quali-fiait ainsi pour la finale de Lausanne. Le Français Romain Girouille n’avait pas attendu la dernière étape pour briller. Il se classait 5e à Saint-Domingue, puis remportait l’Etape 2 à Porec. La jeune étoile montante du tir à l’arc (20 ans) est ainsi immédiatement devenue l’un des favoris pour les Jeux Olympiques. A Beijing comme à Lausanne Girouille va se me-surer à deux archers coréens exceptionnels, Im Dong-Hyun et Park Kyung-Mo. Ils sont tous deux champions olympiques en titre par équipe et Im est aussi le champion du monde en titre. Il a terminé 3e à Porec et gagné l’étape d’Antalya. Park a quant à lui été champion du monde en 1993 alors qu’il n’avait que 18 ans. Il a terminé deux fois sur le podium de la Coupe du Monde cette année et avait gagné la finale de la Coupe du Monde en 2006.

Parmi les autres archers qui ont impressionnés en 2008, on peut mentionner quelques jeunes archers tels que Jayanta Talukdar et Rahul Banerje (IND), Kuo Cheng Wei (TPE), Kim Ha-Neul (AUS), Brady Ellison (USA) ou encore Li Wenquan (CHN).

Classique FemmesLa championne olympique en individuel et par équipe et multiple championne du monde Park Sung-Hyun (KOR) rencontrera Natalia Valeeva (ITA) lors de la finale de Coupe du Monde 2008. Park a prouvé qu’elle est dans une forme olympique en gagnant l’épreuve de Boé et en termi-nant deux autres fois sur le podium cette année. Valeeva fut médaillée de bronze lors des Jeux Olympiques de Bar-celone et six fois championne du monde (2x en extérieur et 4x en salle), dont au dernier championnat du monde à Leipzig en 2007. Elle a gagné la première étape à Saint-Domingue et a terminé 4e et 5e respectivement à Porec et à Antalya. Ce formidable duo devra aussi compter sur Yun Ok Hee (KOR). Celle-ci a non seulement battu le record du monde pour un match, mais elle a aussi remporté les étapes de Porec et d’Antalya. La quatrième participante à Lausanne sera la star montante Justyna Mospinek (POL) qui s’est classée 2e à Porec.

Les autres femmes qui ont réalisé des podiums cette an-née sont Natalya Erdyniyeva (RUS), Berengere Schuh (FRA), Victoria Koval (UKR) et Zhang Juan Juan (CHN).

Poulies HommesAvec sa 4e place à Boé, Patrizio Hofer (SUI) s’est assuré une place en finale de la Coupe du Monde “à la maison”. Il avait auparavant manqué les deux dernières finales pour quel-ques points seulement. Hofer a terminé 4e à Antalya et 6e à Saint-Domingue. Après une 3e place en début de saison, Patrick Coghlan (AUS), devait gagner à Boé pour se quali-

Park showed she was in Olympic form with a win in Boe, plus two other top-three fin-ishes in World Cup Stages this year. Valeeva was the bronze medallist at the Olympic Games in Barcelona and six-time Individual World Champion (2x Outdoor and 4x Indoor), in-cluding the 2007 Outdoor World Championships in Leipzig. She won Stage 1 in Santo Domingo and finished 4th and 5th, respectively in Porec and Antalya. This formidable duo will have to face Yun Ok Hee (KOR), who set a new match world record, and won both the Porec and Antalya’s stages. The fourth participant in Lausanne will be the up-and-coming Justyna Mospinek (POL) who placed 2nd in Porec.

The other ladies that reached the podium during the sea-son were: Natalya Erdyniyeva (RUS), Berengere Schuh (FRA), Victoria Koval (UKR) and Zhang Juan Juan (CHN).

La catégorie Poulies Hommes donne toujours lieu à des matchs incroyables. Compound WomenJamie Van Natta is the sole archer that will be competing in her third World Cup Final. She holds many World Records and will be the favourite in Lausanne. She won in Santo Domingo, was 2nd in Antalya and 3rd in Boe! She will meet Amandine Bouillot (FRA) who delivered on the promise she showed last year. Bouillot won in Porec and was 4th in Santo Domingo. Ivana Buden (CRO) burst on the scene to take 2nd place in Santo Domingo, 3rd in Antalya and 6th in Porec. Fi-nally, Nichola Simpson (GBR) became a true hero to many when she broke the Master World Record twice and com-peted head-to-head with the top athletes in the world. She finished 2nd in Porec and in Boe to qualify for the World Cup Final!

Luzmary Guedez (VEN) actually beat Simpson in Boe in one of the most memorable matches of the season. Eugenia Salvi (ITA) won in Antalya and many others fought for a spot in Lausanne such as: Anna Kazantseva, Sofia Goncharova and Albina Loginova (RUS), Camilla Soemod (DEN), Anne Laurila (FIN) and Nicky Hunt (GBR). Nevertheless, they will have to watch the World Cup Finals live on television, like 250 million others around the world. The rendez-vous is set for the 27 September.

Also, remember—do not miss the archery competi-tions at the Olympic Games from 8 to 15 August.

Cup Final for 2008 to 2011. Lausanne, Co-penhagen, Edinburgh and Istanbul will respectively be the host cities. The Presi-dent of FITA, Dr Ugur Erdener, made the announcement from the Federation’s headquarter in the Olympic Capital, Lausanne, Switzerland.

Besides demonstrating technical capabilities for hosting the event, the newly appointed host cities were selected

Moreover some changes are to come with the number of archers increasing to eight per category and the fact that one place per category will be awarded to the host country. These changes will take place from the Final in Edinburgh in 2010.

he Field Archery World Championships in 2008, incor-porating the Youth Field Archery World Championships, will be held in the former coalfield area of South Wales

in Great Britain.The tournament will run from 1-6 September 2008, and

promises to be a spectacular event. I can assure you of nothing less than a sincere, warm and enthusiastic welcome from the friends, familiar faces, fellow archers and former international competitors who have already volunteered to be part of this event.

Ces championnats, qui se dérouleront sur trois sites dif-férents, représentent un vrai défi d’organisation et promet-tent d’être spectaculaires, avec l’entraînement officiel qui aura lieu dans l’installation pittoresque du Parc Ynysangha-rad, au centre de la ville marchande de Pontypridd. Les qua-lifications et les tours éliminatoires auront lieu au Centre Glyncornel de tir à l’arc à Llwynypia, dans la fameuse vallée de Rhondda, et tant les finales par équipes qu’individuelles auront lieu au Musée d’histoire naturelle du Pays de Galles à St-Fagan, dans la banlieue de Cardiff, la capitale du Pays de Galles. St-Fagan est un musée à ciel ouvert qui offre une occasion rêvée de combiner cette compétition prestigieuse avec l’histoire de la région.

L’Association Galloise de Tir à l’Arc est très enthousiasmée par cet événement. Ses archers se réjouissent d’accueillir les athlètes étrangers dans leur club, leurs terrains d’entraîne-ment, et pour qu’ils assistent à des tournois locaux!

Set in three very different venues, the Championships promise to be challenging and spectacular. Official practice will be held in the picturesque setting of Ynysangharad Park in the centre of the market town of Pontypridd. The quali-fications and elimination rounds will be held at Glyncornel Archery centre in Llwynypia in the famous Rhondda Valleys, and both the team and individual finals will take place in the National History Museum of Wales at St. Fagan’s on the out-skirts of Cardiff, which is the Capital City of Wales. St. Fagan’s is an open air museum and offers a perfect opportunity to combine this prestigious event with the history of the region.

The Welsh Archery Association is very enthusiastic about this event. Its resident archers are looking forward to welcoming visiting competitors to their club and practice facilities and to local tournaments to check out the com-petition!

its mandate from the Olympic Charter, Olympic Solidarity is responsible for distributing the share of the television revenue from the Olympic Games belonging to the National Olympic Committees (NOCs). This takes the form of sports development programmes that focus on four priority ar-eas:

he vision of the Archery World Plan is that “by 2012 Ar-chery will be internationally recognized as one of the important Olympic Sports.” The 2008 Beijing Olympics,

therefore, is the perfect occasion to mark the first anniver-sary since the Archery World Plan was adopted in August 2007 at the FITA Congress in Leipzig.

To mark this milestone, the Archery World Plan Steering Group will be meeting in Beijing to prepare proposals for the FITA Council on the first two targets of the plan: Target 2007–Identity and Target 2008–Events.

Our identity and our events build the core of our sport. Who we are (our identity) and what we do (our events) set the direction for our continued development and growth as an Olympic sport. The remaining three targets of the Ar-chery World Plan, namely Promotion, Partnerships and Ex-pansion, will build on the platform created by our Identity and our Events.

Over the past year, several different working groups have been examining areas within each of these targets, such as Archery’s values, branding, organisational structure, format of competitions, competition calendar, etc. These working groups, made up of a mixture of representatives from Member Associations, FITA staff and external experts, have gathered and tested ideas and provided the Steering Group with recommendations on changes that could be made within Archery.

In August, the Steering Group will prepare two main documents that will be presented to Council by the end of 2008. The first document, combining the results of the working groups involved in Target 2007–Identity, will be a “Corporate Identity Manual.” This will include a com-plete brand description of Archery including such things as how the image of Archery can be visually expressed (including logo). It will also include proposals for the ver-tical organisation of FITA including the roles and respon-

The Archery World Plan was adopted at the FITA Con-

gress in 2007 and will run from 2007 – 2012. It focuses on key changes that should be made to Archery over the coming years to strengthen its recognition as an important Olympic sport. The plan is designed as a change project which will instigate and manage substantial change in the sport and feed this back into the daily operations of Archery. The plan describes a total of 24 Focus Areas within Archery that will be exam-ined over the duration of the plan.

The implementation of the plan is structured in a way that a Working Group is formed for each of the 24 Focus Areas. Each Working Group is responsible for examining the key issues at the core of each area and making concrete proposals for improve-ment. Once these proposals are finalised they are passed on to the Archery World Plan Steering Group and then to the FITA Council for approval and implementation.

FITA et sera en vigueur de 2007 à 2012. Il se concentre sur les changements es-sentiels qui devraient être apportés au tir à l’arc dans les prochaines années pour renforcer sa reconnaissance en tant que sport olympique important. Le Plan est un projet qui va instaurer des changements substantiels dans notre sport et les intégrer dans les activités quotidiennes du tir à l’arc. ouglas Thomson sadly passed away on 20 April 2008, aged 88 years old. The first time I met him, I was the newly elected President of the Italian Archery Federation, then

a very young, informal, homespun organisation, and naturally quite low in the ranking of important Member Associations.

It happened at the twenty-fifth Congress of FITA at Val-ley Forge, Pennsylvania, in 1969, my first Congress. I was—as many were—awed by the regal formality of the President,

Mrs Inger Frith, and by what seemed to me the mysterious intricacies of Congress procedure. Yet I wanted to be an ac-tive participant in it, so at the end of the first session I went to see the Secretary General, Douglas Thomson.

I was immediately impressed by his kindness and pa-tience, by his giving me a long time after a long, hard day, but above all I was conquered by his competence. I had gone to him ready to complain about the rigid discipline in

“out of order” by the President.I received from him the most convincing lesson on Con-

gress management, on the need for clarity and efficiency in the process of making decisions based on knowledge of facts and situations as well as on clearly stated choices, and on how to do it. All this with great friendliness and humour!

I became there and then his fervent disciple and, if later, in my terms as President, I managed to run my Congresses and the administration of FITA without causing undue trou-ble, I largely owe it to his teaching. When I was elected, I had hoped to confirm him as Secretary General at least for the initial period of transition, but in those days the seats of FITA were the homes and telephones of President and Secretary. Very reasonably, he pointed out that the geographic distance between us was too great for an efficient co-operation.

It is today a sad circumstance that brings back these memories but I am glad that it gives me a chance to state what a debt FITA, not just me, owes to Douglas Thomson.

J’ai été immédiatement impressionné par sa gentillesse et sa patience, par le fait qu’il m’accorde un long moment après une dure journée, mais j’ai surtout été conquis par ses compétences. J’étais allé vers lui pour me plaindre de la discipline rigide de l’agenda, la tâche difficile de deviner quand il était approprié de parler, le risque toujours mena-çant d’être déclaré “hors sujet” par la présidente.

J’ai reçu de lui la leçon de gestion la plus convaincante sur le besoin de clarté et d’efficacité dans la prise de déci-sions basée sur la connaissances des faits et des situations, ainsi que sur des choix clairement définis et sur comment les effectuer. Tout cela très amicalement et avec beaucoup d’humour!

Je suis devenu à ce moment-là son fervent disciple et si, plus tard, en tant que président, j’ai réussi à mener mes congrès et l’administration de la FITA sans causer de diffi-cultés injustifiées, je le dois largement à son enseignement. Quand j’ai été élu, j’avais espéré le confirmer à son poste de secrétaire général au moins pour la période initiale de transition, mais en ce temps-là les sièges de la FITA étaient les maisons et les téléphones du président et du secrétaire. Il a fait remarquer très raisonnablement que la distance géographique entre nous était trop grande pour permettre une coopération efficace.

C’est aujourd’hui un triste événement qui fait revenir ces souvenirs, mais je suis content d’avoir une chance de dire quelle dette a la FITA, et pas seulement moi, envers Douglas Thomson.

Sa personnalité, toute de discrétion, a peut-être été par-fois dans l’ombre de la présence resplendissante de Mlle Frith, mais je peux affirmer avec certitude que bon nombre des succès de la FITA du temps où elle y était auraient été plus difficiles à obtenir si elle n’avait pas bénéficié de l’aide constante, efficace et loyale et – j’en suis sûr – des conseils de Douglas Thomson.

La FITA doit se souvenir de lui avec admiration et gra-titude.


His personality, of which self-effacing was part, may have been sometimes overshadowed by the resplendent presence of Mrs Frith, but I can certainly say that many of FITA’s successes in the period of her tenure would have been more difficult to achieve had she not had the con-stant, capable, loyal help and—I am sure—counsel of Doug-las Thomson.

FITA must remember him with admiration and gratitude.
