Best Soda Alternatives

Water isn’t the only smart alternative to soft drinks. Choose pure juices – juice “drinks” have more calories and fewer nutrients. Grape Juice is a good source of antioxidants that seem to enhance brain function. In one study, older adults who drank Concord grape juice daily for 12 weeks showed significant improvements on memory tests. Several studies suggest lemonade can help ward off kidney stones. If you’ve had kidney stones, cut your risk of a recurrence by as much as 90% with a large daily does: mix 4 oz. of lemon juice with 2 liters water. Drink straight up or sweetened.

A Letter from our President

Members, I am convinced that the above Proverb somehow inspired us to put forth our best effort to make the July 11 fund-raiser concert a great success! “Thank you” to those of you who helped to boost our ticket sales, brought cookies, helped to insert announcements in the programs and helped with tickets at the doors! Most of all “thank you” for your smiles and words of encouragement when things didn’t seem to “go just right” at times.

The concert was a success and who wasn’t inspired by Byron Smith and The Spirit Chorale? Members, we are looking forward to a year of more exciting events beginning with the Memorial Concert which takes place in November. We ask that you attend the Branch meetings and share with us any fund-raising ideas that you have experienced. Also we would like to have suggestions for performing artists, choirs, poets, etc. See you in September !

Annual Scholarship Fund-Raiser Concert

On Sunday, July 11, 2010, we were treated to a magnificent concert presented by The Spirit Chorale of Los Angeles under the direction of Byron J. Smith with performances by our scholarship participants. The program was laid out in four segments; hymns and spirituals, scholarship participants and winners, “Porgy and Bess Revisited” and gospels. In the first segment we heard “Sweet, Sweet Spirit” arranged by Byron Smith, “My Souls Been Anchored in the Lord” arranged by Moses Hogan, “Swing Low” arranged by Larry Farrow (husband of our member, Yvonne Farrow), “Camp Meetin’ in de Wilderness” arranged by Richard Jackson, “Give Me Jesus” by Lela M. Anderson (relative of Tommy Dorsey), “Daniel Saw the Stone” by Richard Jackson, “I Must Tell Jesus” arranged by Mattie L. Robertson and “I’ll Stand” by Raymond Wise. All of the soloists were spectacular and included Donald Perry & Karen Kelly, Perry Hayes, Nell Walker, Susan Grayson and Ricky Taylor. Our first and second place scholarship winners were not able to participate due to previous engagements but we were privileged to have the third place winner, Jordan Busa and two persons who participated in the scholarship competition, Sulwe Green, pianist and Amira Bennett, violist. This segment began with Jordan on violin playing (unaccompanied) Sonata #1 in G Minor, Adagio by Johann Sebastian Bach. He was followed by Sulwe at the piano playing Sonata in A, K.331, 3rd Movement, “Alla Turka” by Wolfgang A. Mozart and the final presentation by Amira on viola was Prelude Suite I, in G Major by Bach. The Spirit Chorale came back for the Porgy & Bess segment in full costume and began with “Summertime” sung beautifully by Susan Grayson in her own style (she is the daughter of our own John & Dorothy Grayson). Then came “A Woman is a Sometime Thing”, “My Man’s Gone Now”, “Promised Land”, “There’s a Boat Leavin’ Soon”, “Oh, I Can’t Sit Down”, “It Ain’t Necessarily So” and ended with “O Lawd I’m On My Way”. At this point in the program the new GLB officers for the 2010/2011 fiscal year were installed by our Western Region Director, Arvis Jones. Following the installation of officers Patti Anderson made a special presentation to Nathaniel Riddick who had served as treasurer of Georgia Laster Branch for over 15 years. She read a brief bio of his accomplishments (in life and with GLB) then presented him with a beautiful plaque. He was so appreciative and gave a warm acceptance speech. The Chorale came back in their third costume change of the evening and wowed us with their gospel section. They began with “Somebody’s Knocking” followed by “Through Christ” and ended with “Just Can’t Tell it All” (Byron Smith soloist), all written by Byron J. Smith. We were so moved by the music of the afternoon and greatly appreciate the talents of Byron and his Spirit Chorale, so aptly named. They are celebrating over 16 years of existence, preserving music of African-American composers, especially the Negro Spiritual. The Chorale has received rave reviews and critical acclaim nationwide and worldwide and have performed and recorded with celebrities such as Barry Manilow, Clifton Davis, Andre Crouch, Della Reese and Richard Smallwood. They have had two successful tours of Europe and are scheduling their third European

tour of Germany, Italy and Spain to be followed by a tour of Japan. Byron J. Smith is the First Vice-President of NANM, Inc. Ms. Dera Tatum was the mistress of ceremonies for this event and John E. Mayes, Jr., our chaplain, gave the invocation and benediction.

IT’S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR AGAIN!!! MEMBERSHIP DUES ARE DUE NOW!!!!!

Our fiscal year begins July 1, 2010 and will go thru June 30, 2011. Our President requests that all members make an effort to pay their dues in a timely manner. We would like to remind you that the rate has been increased to $75.00 for regular membership and $35.00 for Life members. The National President asks that we get our dues into the National office no later than October 31 of each year. If you have any questions regarding anything pertaining to membership please contact the membership chairperson, Danellen Joseph, (323) 737-0137. Remember, you may pay in installments if necessary! Just let the Financial Secretary know and make arrangements with her. Thank you for your continued support.
