The National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA)

• The National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) was an American women's rights organization formed in May 1890 as a unification of the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA) and the American Woman Suffrage Association (AWSA).

• The NAWSA was the largest and most important suffrage organization in the United States, and was the primary promoter of women's right to vote.

• The NAWSA pushed for a constitutional amendment guaranteeing women's voting rights, and was instrumental in winning the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1920.

The leader of the Women's Suffragette movement, Mrs. Emmeline Pankhurst is arrested by Superintendant Rolfe outside Buckingham Palace, London while trying to present a petition to HM King George V in May 1914.

In 1910, Pankhurst led a march on Parliament of more than 300 women. They were met with an aggressive and violent police response - ordered by then-home secretary Winston Churchill -in which officers punched protesters and "pulled on women's breasts"

• The Representation of the People in 1918 extended the vote to all men over 21 and women over 30 who were property owners or graduates voting in a 'university constituency.‘

• The difference between men and women in this law was introduced to prevent men becoming an electoral minority following the huge loss of life in the Great War.

Ratification Of The Nineteenth Amendment

• On August 18, 1920, the Tennessee legislature narrowly approved the 19th Amendment. On August 31, the Tennessee House of Representatives voted to rescind their previous vote, but the U.S. Secretary of State had already proclaimed the amendment ratified on August 26.

• Women’s right to vote was achieved through the national and local efforts of both the NAWSA and the NWP.
