The Suffolk County Police ALUMNI NEWS Winter 2020 PRESIDENTS MESSAGE We have finally completed the necessary steps that allows us to accept credit and debit cards on our website. For the convenience of our members, we will be able to accept payments for annual dues, Quartermaster items, and event reservations such as the reunion. Considerable research was done to be certain of credit card SECURITY programs. Bear with us as we get to learn the administrative tasks involved. A great thanks to webmaster Kevin Ryniker for his efforts here! We have updated our Quartermaster and Commemorative Coin order forms as we have revised our inventory. We will have one hat, golf shirt and Tee-shirt. We have found our- selves with too much inventory in different sizes and colors. This will simplify and standardize things for our quartermaster. Remember that ALL proceeds from the Quartermaster goes to our Scholarship Fund. SALE! SALE! The Quartermaster is looking to blow out the old inventory. Call him to see what he has to offer at bargain basement prices. Someone might want to buy matching shirts for a bowling or pickle ball team. 1st Annual Golf Tournament, 1/14/2020. The event netted over one Thousand dollars for our K-9 Group even with the limited attendees. You know the old story lose lips sink ships”, well that happened to this event. At one point we had 42 reservations. Then someone started a rumor that not many were attending and the Alumni was going to cancel”. Far from the truth!! We had 18 cancellations due to this ridiculous rumor! Kudos to Barry Plesser for his efforts. Thanks to our members in the Villages who did attend. Please take a moment to check out the commerative Retirement desk lite now available from the Quartermaster. It is really nice and makes for a nice gift! The vendor makes a nice contribution to the Scholarship Fund for each one ordered. See order forms in this newsletter. Hope to see you at the reunion on 2/5/2020. Record attendance is expected! PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE We have finally completed the necessary steps that allows us to accept credit and debit cards on our website. We have found our-

selves with too much inventory in different sizes and colors. You know the old story “lose lips sink ships”, well that happened to this event. At one point we had 42 reservations. Then someone started a rumor that “not many were attending and the Alumni was going to cancel”.

Fraternally, Jack Scott, President. S.C.P.D. Alumni Association [email protected]

VICE PRESIDENT AND MEMBERSHIP REPORT Here we are coming to the end of a crazy year of weather, politics and changes in our benefits. I hope everyone is as well as can be. It has been a very busy year for the Alumni. We have gotten in involved with the S.C.P.D. Historical Society restoring the museums at Police Headquarters. Trying to restore the public visitation to the museums by the public. Volunteers are needed to conduct these tours. The Alumni also honored the retired K-9 Dogs by making them members of the Alumni. The Alumni will assist caretakers of these dogs with extreme cost of medical care which Suffolk County will not pay for. We have improved the communications with the Department and the PBA. The Alumni has created an “End of Watch Guide” which

gives relatives a list of organizations and things to do and who to notify reference the passing of a member. The Alumni now has a Chaplin available to members and their family. He is a retired police officer who is minister of a church in Coram, New York. The biggest problem the Alumni has is the decrease in dues paying members. Some of the reasons for this problem is the decrease in new retirees becoming dues paying mem-bers, the increase in the passing of dues paying members, the increase in the number of members that are re-tired more than thirty years who are now dues exempt, and the increase in dues paying members that have stopped paying their dues for unknown reasons. I spend a lot of hours on the phone calling members but get very few responses. Please find enclosed a membership form along with the 2020 dues notice for members. All members are asked to complete the enclosed form with your contact information. All S.C.P.D. retirees are members of our organization without costs. Those who wish to assist us on behalf of our fellow retirees or wish to be eligible for selected benefits ($400 death benefit and the ten $1,000 scholarships which are awarded to children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and stepchildren) are asked to contribute annual dues of $35.00 for these benefits, the Alumni operating costs and endeavors. These members are designated as ACTIVE MEMBERS. ASSOCIATE MEMBERS are eligible for all benefits except the death benefit. Surviving Spouses who received the death benefit are eligible for all benefits except the death benefit. Their annual dues are $15.00. Spouses who did not receive a member’s death benefit are eligible for all benefits and dues are $35.00. Exempt Certificate Holders, 20/30 and 20/40 members are exempt from all dues. You have to apply for the certificates to become exempt. The Exempt Status Starts the Next Year. Any additional money received will be donated to the SCPD Jack Isabel Barry Scholarship Fund.

From The Editor Since the Newsletter hasn’t been written in a few months, there are two things I wish to address. I am sorry to say that Fifth Precinct PSA Maureen “Mo” Rohrbacker has passed away. She worked in the Admin Office while I was there. This is my official thank you to all who called me, e-mailed me, or otherwise wished me good luck after finding out about my left foot. As of right now, my foot is healing

slowly since apparently my age has something to do with the speed of it. But I’m doing good and I appreciat-ed all of the good wishes for my speedy recovery.
