THE great ci ty o f Chicago, twenty-si' miles away , with its ninety

si' sq uare miles o f terri tory , its four thousand two hundred miles

o f streets, fifteen hundred miles o f sewers and forty-eigh t miles o f

boulevards, is barely seventy-fiv e years o ld . The founders o f Chicago

did not have in mind the bui lding o f a grea t city ' wha t they ac c om

plished w as only incidental to the ordinary pursui t o f the varied activi ties

o f l ife, but their efforts have resu lted in the greatest material develop

ment the human race ever has witnessed , in a simi lar length o f t ime .

In the down town dist rict , a spot a mi le sq uare , can be pointed out

where much more business is done than in any similar space in the

world. The early sett lers o f Chicago had but li t t le encouragement to

believe that a great ci ty would ever grow out o f the swampy morass in

which the townsi t e w as laid ' the country round about w as a wi lder

ness almost unknown ' their neighbors were Indians, not always

fri endly but the geographical location fo r a great distributing center

HE drift and the opinion o f the Captains

o f Industry as to the future may be in

ferred from the developments at Garv and the

plans tha t have been adopted to be worked out

later on . Enough has been said in regard to this

new fie ld o f the ' ni ted S tates S teel Corporation

to indicate in a way the magnitude o f the under

taking, but Chicago does not yet appreciate what

is happening close to its doors, and sti l l less does

the rest o f the world grasp the magnitude o f the

pro'ect . I t sounds l i ke e' aggera tion to say that

engagements already entered into contemplate th e

employment o f men , and that a popula

tion there o f 2 in the near future is a con

servativ e est imate, but when such information

comes from cautious men , famil iar wi th what is

going on , one must accept the statements with

tolerance a t least .

DEAR SIR

I desire to thank you specially fo r your in

v itation o f last wee k to the “ Opening o f Gary

H arbor, ' and fo r the pleasure which i t gave me

to accept and be present .

The possibi li ties o f Gary are enormous ' i t

starts today w i th the advantages which Chicago

acq uired only after many years o f hard struggles.

If properly handled , Gary and its ad'oining

towns may in 1 5 to 2 0 years riva l , ifno t surpass,Chicago as a commerci a l and manufacturing

community . ' ay it successful ly arrive a t that

position .' ery truly ,
