It seems there was to have bsea a wedding atAlbany on ths 34th lust., as a correspondent in-
forms us, but It proved to be another illustrationof ths aneisut proverb ihat "the course of truslovs never runs smooth." There was a charmingyoung widow who obarmed a railroad man, and amutual affection sprang op, which was tbs eaussof trouble to tbs mind of a gallant batohsr wholoved. It seems, but was not loved again, until hecontrived to prejudice bsr mlud by falsi yarnssbout his rival, upon wul b bs mads applicationand won from ths fair widow a fair promise tomarry htm, ths gallant butcher, Instead. This Isths wedding which was to bars taken place y,
and yet it seems that after all, tbs fairone. Boding out ths falsehood of her "totber"lover, sent again for ths gallant railroader, madeIt up with bim, marrlsd blm and wont off en themorning train with htm on ths 33d, leaving berother lorcr to manage ths wedding of ths 34th allby himself."

YRIDAY ..JANUARY J7, 1st!
Lebanon. We paid the beautiful andurinative villatre of Lebanon a visit lastSaturday, where we found everything apDarentW in statu reo. We learned from
Got. Ballard that the Santiam Coal Com
tany, of which he Is a member, havenumber of men employed in excavating andpenetrating the ledge recontlv discovered on
Beaver, about eight miles from Lebanonand that they are meeting with flatteringsuccess. ' The Gevernor showed us some fine
specimens of anthracite coal whieh had been
taken from this deposit, and which were pro
Bounced by an etperienced coal-mine- r to be"
superior to much of the Pennsylvania and
Iowa eoaL The vein is said to be about 10
feet perpendicular and from 18 to 36 inohes
In width, while it seems to penetrate themountain to an unknown depth. Muchwealth is expected U flow into Linn county
' from the development of these mines. At Lebanon we also found our friend and
'agent, lion. W. S. Elkins, immersed to bisehin in his "store business," and his establishment crowded with customers. So muchso, in fact, that he bod but little time to embrace us and exchange pictures. lie has
just been appointed Notary Public by GovGrevor, and we bespeak for him a call bythose desiring anvtbing transacted in thatline.
The store of A. Cowan Jt Co., auperintended by 'Squire Claughton, is doing i
taring business, and well it should, for nomore competent and agreeable "storckeeper" lives, moves and has his being thanBro. Claughton.
Santiam Academy, at Lebanon, looked to, ns te have been repainted and enlarged, and
we learn that it is in a flourishing conditionand well patronised.
sr, In passing alone the road between thiscity and Lebanon, we observed many evidences of improvement and thrift about the
! farms and farm-house- prominent amongwhich was a large and elegant new residenceerected by Uncle Jackey Settle, who has be-
come a local celebrity in consequence of hismany hunting exploits, bis genial temperand his expert knowledge of the manufacture of a blood-warmin- g liquid, clasicallvInown as 'NJaokev's Best," which has serv.
d to brace the nerves of many a mountain' ' Nimrod and to cheer the fainting spirits of
divers weary travelers who have chanced topass that way.
We noticed that much plowing was beingdone and that the farmers were improvingthe fine weather in preparing for theirspring sowing of cereals. The recent rise
'. in wheat has given a new impetus to theheretofore rather languishing agriculturalspirit of our rich farming county, and there

Pain is suppossd to be the lot of ns poor mortals, as inevitable as dsstb itself and liable at aoytime to come upon us. Therefore it is importanttbat remedial ageots should be at band to bs usedon an emergency, when tbe seminal principlelodged in tbe ayetem shall develop itself, sad wefeel ths excruciating agonies of pain, or the depressing influence f disease. Such a remedialagent exists in the Pais Killer, whose fame baamade tbe eireuit or tbe globe. Amid tbe eternalIces of tbe polar regions or beneath tbs intolerableand burning sun ot the tropics, its virtues areknown and appreciated. Under all latitudes, fromthe one extreme to the other, suffering humanityhas found relief from many of its ills by its use.Tbe wide broad area over which tbis medicinebas spresd, atteats Its value and potency. From
small beginning, tbe Pain Killer bas pushedgradually along, making its own highway, solelyby its virtues.
Bush unexampled success and popularity hasbrought otbsrs into the field, wbo bavs attempted, under similarity of name, to usurp ths confidenceof ths people and turn it to their own selfisbnsssand dishonesty, but their efforts bavs provedfruitless, while tbe Pain Killer ia still growing inpublic favor.

At Scio. After leaving Lebanon we visited Scio, last Saturday, and remained overnight in that enterprising little city, partaking of the excellent hospitality of minehost, Mr. Alexander, of the Scio Hotel.Although Scio hasn't got the railroad, itscitizens have sufficient energy and pluck tokeep their town on the line of improvementand pmgress, and it shows more life now
. than Salem, except when the Legislatureand State Fair are grinding. The youngpeople of Scio partake of the spirit of
of their sires, and are alwaysgetting np something in the way of fun andamusement. Tile Scio Debating Club was
ia full blast when we arrived there, and the"young Demosthenes and Ciceros comprisingits members were discussing the question of
'JUsoleeoZ, That Geo. Washington deserves' more honor for defending America than does"'Christopher'Colnmhos for discovering if."After the question bad been fully elucidated,
'the President rendered a decision adverselyta"C. Columbus and in favor of G. Wash-inrgton,'to't-
infinite delight of the affirm-ative debaters and the utter disgust of the
- champions of the negative. We didn'tet"in until the debate was about closed or we'would hats put in a lick for the Columbusfellows, as we always were in favor or the"'adsr dog in the fight." The question se-
lected for the next meeting, "JSesolved, Thatthe works of nature are more pleasing ton
the eye than the works of art" is a fruitfultheme and one well calculated to developthe artistic taste of the participants in the'discission. (Wonder bow many of the de-
baters on the affirmative will point the Pres-- "
Ident to a pretty woman as a sockdolagerargument in favor of nature's handiwork? We were pleased to see that the Debating
'Club was well attended and that a generalinterest was manifested rn the proceedings, and wish that the youngsters of Albany
1 had a sufficient desieefur the improvementand cultivation of their minds to copy afterthe Scio people in the formation of a sim-ilar literary society.
We learned thai the young people of Scio, beaded by that star performer andble r, Tom. Thorp, wereing for a dramatic entertainment which theyintended giving on Saturday evening, Jana-ar- j

uring in it we are satisfied that it will bean eminent success, and regret much thatye cannot be present to enjoy the fun.

will be found an interesting letter4rom the National Capital. We have madearrangements whereby we will in a shorttime receive a letter every week from Wash-
ington City, containing all the latest politi-
cal news, gossip, etc., to be gleaned from, the headquarters of national legislation.
The letters will be sharp, spicy and gossipy,as well as containing all the elements of po
. litical orthodoxy peculiar to sound Democratic literature. As this will incur considerable cost we trust our patrons will appreciate the effort which induced ns to add suchan attractive feature to our paper, and as
' eist us by helping to extend the circulationpf the DlVQCBAT.
