ADVKltTlSEMKNTS. LOCAL PICKINGS. ADVERTISEMENTS. A VDEKTI 8EMENT S. A DVKRTI SEMEMTS. A CARD. En. Dbkocsati In tbs Salem Statesman, ef January 25th I And the following item i . It seems there was to have bsea a wedding at Albany on ths 34th lust., as a correspondent in- forms us, but It proved to be another illustration of ths aneisut proverb ihat "the course of trus lovs never runs smooth." There was a charming young widow who obarmed a railroad man, and a mutual affection sprang op, which was tbs eauss of trouble to tbs mind of a gallant batohsr who loved. It seems, but was not loved again, until he contrived to prejudice bsr mlud by falsi yarns sbout his rival, upon wul b bs mads application and won from ths fair widow a fair promise to marry htm, ths gallant butcher, Instead. This Is ths wedding which was to bars taken place y, and yet it seems that after all, tbs fair one. Boding out ths falsehood of her "totber" lover, sent again for ths gallant railroader, made It up with bim, marrlsd blm and wont off en the morning train with htm on ths 33d, leaving ber other lorcr to manage ths wedding of ths 34th all by himself." Something similar to the abeTs also appeared In the Oreaoataa of the same data. Now, sir, as YRIDAY ..JANUARY J7, 1st! Lebanon. We paid the beautiful and urinative villatre of Lebanon a visit last Saturday, where we found everything ap DarentW in statu reo. We learned from Got. Ballard that the Santiam Coal Com tany, of which he Is a member, have number of men employed in excavating and penetrating the ledge recontlv discovered on Beaver, about eight miles from Lebanon and that they are meeting with flattering success. ' The Gevernor showed us some fine specimens of anthracite coal whieh had been taken from this deposit, and which were pro Bounced by an etperienced coal-mine- r to be " superior to much of the Pennsylvania and Iowa eoaL The vein is said to be about 10 feet perpendicular and from 18 to 36 inohes In width, while it seems to penetrate the mountain to an unknown depth. Much wealth is expected U flow into Linn county ' from the development of these mines. At Lebanon we also found our friend and 'agent, lion. W. S. Elkins, immersed to bis ehin in his "store business," and his estab lishment crowded with customers. So much so, in fact, that he bod but little time to em brace us and exchange pictures. lie has just been appointed Notary Public by Gov Grevor, and we bespeak for him a call by those desiring anvtbing transacted in that line. The store of A. Cowan Jt Co., auperin tended by 'Squire Claughton, is doing i taring business, and well it should, for no more competent and agreeable "storckeep er" lives, moves and has his being than Bro. Claughton. Santiam Academy, at Lebanon, looked to , ns te have been repainted and enlarged, and we learn that it is in a flourishing condition and well patronised. sr, In passing alone the road between this city and Lebanon, we observed many evi dences of improvement and thrift about the ! farms and farm-house- prominent among which was a large and elegant new residence erected by Uncle Jackey Settle, who has be- come a local celebrity in consequence of his many hunting exploits, bis genial temper and his expert knowledge of the manufac ture of a blood-warmin- g liquid, clasicallv Inown as 'NJaokev's Best," which has serv. d to brace the nerves of many a mountain ' ' Nimrod and to cheer the fainting spirits of divers weary travelers who have chanced to pass that way. We noticed that much plowing was being done and that the farmers were improving the fine weather in preparing for their spring sowing of cereals. The recent rise '. in wheat has given a new impetus to the heretofore rather languishing agricultural spirit of our rich farming county, and there No change in the markets sinoe last week. E. W.'Pike has over 40 names enrolled in his militia company. Our fellow townsman, Mr. W. W. Tar rish, buried his infant daughter last Wednes day. . See estray notice in another column. Somebody has evidently lost a valuable cow and calf. D. Froman hits purchased the Parrish Block, in this city, from Wm. Craw ford for $12,700. "Those whom the gods love die young." On the 3rd Snhban of February next the funeral services of Elder G. W. Hail, deceased, will be conducted at the Syra cuse School House, by Elder Wm. M. Town- send. Capt. Shields, County Treasurer, informs us that he has paid into the State Treasury the Linn ennnry tax for 1370, and Ihat it amounted to the handsome little sum of $20,064. Mrs. Duniwav is preparing to remove to Portland, and we understand she has pnr chased the San Francisco Pioneer which will hereafter hcpublished in Portland under her management. There is talk of the formation of a joint stock company for the erection of a mngnifi cent hotel in this city during the coming seanon. We think no other investment would pay a well. About half of the rash has been paid nrer on the $25,000 given by this city to Ben. Ilntladay. Blain, Young t Co. have the notes and are smilingly taking in the skni on them. See notice to contractors eleewhere. The Willamette Falls Canal and Locks Company want bidders for the contract of eonstruct- - irS the wrk at Oregon Citv. Pain is suppossd to be the lot of ns poor mor tals, as inevitable as dsstb itself and liable at aoy time to come upon us. Therefore it is important tbat remedial ageots should be at band to bs used on an emergency, when tbe seminal principle lodged in tbe ayetem shall develop itself, sad we feel ths excruciating agonies of pain, or the de pressing influence f disease. Such a remedial agent exists in the Pais Killer, whose fame baa made tbe eireuit or tbe globe. Amid tbe eternal Ices of tbe polar regions or beneath tbs intolerable and burning sun ot the tropics, its virtues are known and appreciated. Under all latitudes, from the one extreme to the other, suffering humanity has found relief from many of its ills by its use. Tbe wide broad area over which tbis medicine bas spresd, atteats Its value and potency. From small beginning, tbe Pain Killer bas pushed gradually along, making its own highway, solely by its virtues. Bush unexampled success and popularity has brought otbsrs into the field, wbo bavs attempted, under similarity of name, to usurp ths confidence of ths people and turn it to their own selfisbnsss and dishonesty, but their efforts bavs proved fruitless, while tbe Pain Killer ia still growing in public favor. At Scio. After leaving Lebanon we vis ited Scio, last Saturday, and remained over night in that enterprising little city, partak ing of the excellent hospitality of mine host, Mr. Alexander, of the Scio Hotel. Although Scio hasn't got the railroad, its citizens have sufficient energy and pluck to keep their town on the line of improvement and pmgress, and it shows more life now . than Salem, except when the Legislature and State Fair are grinding. The young people of Scio partake of the spirit of of their sires, and are always getting np something in the way of fun and amusement. Tile Scio Debating Club was ia full blast when we arrived there, and the "young Demosthenes and Ciceros comprising its members were discussing the question of 'JUsoleeoZ, That Geo. Washington deserves ' more honor for defending America than does "'Christopher'Colnmhos for discovering if." After the question bad been fully elucidated, 'the President rendered a decision adversely ta"C. Columbus and in favor of G. Wash-inrgton,'to't- infinite delight of the affirm- ative debaters and the utter disgust of the - champions of the negative. We didn'tet "in until the debate was about closed or we 'would hats put in a lick for the Columbus fellows, as we always were in favor or the "'adsr dog in the fight." The question se- lected for the next meeting, "JSesolved, That the works of nature are more pleasing ton the eye than the works of art" is a fruitful theme and one well calculated to develop the artistic taste of the participants in the 'discission. (Wonder bow many of the de- baters on the affirmative will point the Pres-- " Ident to a pretty woman as a sockdolager argument in favor of nature's handiwork? We were pleased to see that the Debating 'Club was well attended and that a general interest was manifested rn the proceedings, and wish that the youngsters of Albany 1 had a sufficient desieefur the improvement and cultivation of their minds to copy after the Scio people in the formation of a sim- ilar literary society. We learned thai the young people of Scio, beaded by that star performer and ble r, Tom. Thorp, were ing for a dramatic entertainment which they intended giving on Saturday evening, Jana-ar- j 28th night. From the aames of those whom we learned were fig- uring in it we are satisfied that it will be an eminent success, and regret much that ye cannot be present to enjoy the fun. Oca Wasims-gto- Cokkespoxbekt. will be found an interesting letter 4rom the National Capital. We have made arrangements whereby we will in a short time receive a letter every week from Wash- ington City, containing all the latest politi- cal news, gossip, etc., to be gleaned from , the headquarters of national legislation. The letters will be sharp, spicy and gossipy, as well as containing all the elements of po . litical orthodoxy peculiar to sound Demo cratic literature. As this will incur consid erable cost we trust our patrons will appre ciate the effort which induced ns to add such an attractive feature to our paper, and as ' eist us by helping to extend the circulation pf the DlVQCBAT. It seems there was to have bsea a wedding atAlbany on ths 34th lust., as a correspondent in-

forms us, but It proved to be another illustrationof ths aneisut proverb ihat "the course of truslovs never runs smooth." There was a charmingyoung widow who obarmed a railroad man, and amutual affection sprang op, which was tbs eaussof trouble to tbs mind of a gallant batohsr wholoved. It seems, but was not loved again, until hecontrived to prejudice bsr mlud by falsi yarnssbout his rival, upon wul b bs mads applicationand won from ths fair widow a fair promise tomarry htm, ths gallant butcher, Instead. This Isths wedding which was to bars taken place y,

and yet it seems that after all, tbs fairone. Boding out ths falsehood of her "totber"lover, sent again for ths gallant railroader, madeIt up with bim, marrlsd blm and wont off en themorning train with htm on ths 33d, leaving berother lorcr to manage ths wedding of ths 34th allby himself."

Lebanon. We paid the beautiful andurinative villatre of Lebanon a visit lastSaturday, where we found everything apDarentW in statu reo. We learned from

Got. Ballard that the Santiam Coal Com

tany, of which he Is a member, havenumber of men employed in excavating andpenetrating the ledge recontlv discovered on

Beaver, about eight miles from Lebanonand that they are meeting with flatteringsuccess. ' The Gevernor showed us some fine

specimens of anthracite coal whieh had been

taken from this deposit, and which were pro

Bounced by an etperienced coal-mine- r to be"

superior to much of the Pennsylvania and

Iowa eoaL The vein is said to be about 10

feet perpendicular and from 18 to 36 inohes

In width, while it seems to penetrate themountain to an unknown depth. Muchwealth is expected U flow into Linn county

' from the development of these mines. At Lebanon we also found our friend and

'agent, lion. W. S. Elkins, immersed to bisehin in his "store business," and his establishment crowded with customers. So muchso, in fact, that he bod but little time to embrace us and exchange pictures. lie has

just been appointed Notary Public by GovGrevor, and we bespeak for him a call bythose desiring anvtbing transacted in thatline.

The store of A. Cowan Jt Co., auperintended by 'Squire Claughton, is doing i

taring business, and well it should, for nomore competent and agreeable "storckeeper" lives, moves and has his being thanBro. Claughton.

Santiam Academy, at Lebanon, looked to, ns te have been repainted and enlarged, and

we learn that it is in a flourishing conditionand well patronised.

sr, In passing alone the road between thiscity and Lebanon, we observed many evidences of improvement and thrift about the

! farms and farm-house- prominent amongwhich was a large and elegant new residenceerected by Uncle Jackey Settle, who has be-

come a local celebrity in consequence of hismany hunting exploits, bis genial temperand his expert knowledge of the manufacture of a blood-warmin- g liquid, clasicallvInown as 'NJaokev's Best," which has serv.

d to brace the nerves of many a mountain' ' Nimrod and to cheer the fainting spirits of

divers weary travelers who have chanced topass that way.

We noticed that much plowing was beingdone and that the farmers were improvingthe fine weather in preparing for theirspring sowing of cereals. The recent rise

'. in wheat has given a new impetus to theheretofore rather languishing agriculturalspirit of our rich farming county, and there

us that he has paid into the State Treasurythe Linn ennnry tax for 1370, and Ihat itamounted to the handsome little sum of$20,064.

Mrs. Duniwav is preparing to remove toPortland, and we understand she has pnrchased the San Francisco Pioneer which willhereafter hcpublished in Portland under hermanagement.

There is talk of the formation of a jointstock company for the erection of a mngnificent hotel in this city during the comingseanon. We think no other investmentwould pay a well.

Pain is suppossd to be the lot of ns poor mortals, as inevitable as dsstb itself and liable at aoytime to come upon us. Therefore it is importanttbat remedial ageots should be at band to bs usedon an emergency, when tbe seminal principlelodged in tbe ayetem shall develop itself, sad wefeel ths excruciating agonies of pain, or the depressing influence f disease. Such a remedialagent exists in the Pais Killer, whose fame baamade tbe eireuit or tbe globe. Amid tbe eternalIces of tbe polar regions or beneath tbs intolerableand burning sun ot the tropics, its virtues areknown and appreciated. Under all latitudes, fromthe one extreme to the other, suffering humanityhas found relief from many of its ills by its use.Tbe wide broad area over which tbis medicinebas spresd, atteats Its value and potency. is every evidence to helifeve that the breadthof land sown in old Linn this year will beat least one-forat- h greater than ever before.

At Scio. After leaving Lebanon we visited Scio, last Saturday, and remained overnight in that enterprising little city, partaking of the excellent hospitality of minehost, Mr. Alexander, of the Scio Hotel.Although Scio hasn't got the railroad, itscitizens have sufficient energy and pluck tokeep their town on the line of improvementand pmgress, and it shows more life now

. than Salem, except when the Legislatureand State Fair are grinding. The youngpeople of Scio partake of the spirit of

of their sires, and are alwaysgetting np something in the way of fun andamusement. Tile Scio Debating Club was

ia full blast when we arrived there, and the"young Demosthenes and Ciceros comprisingits members were discussing the question of

'JUsoleeoZ, That Geo. Washington deserves' more honor for defending America than does"'Christopher'Colnmhos for discovering if."After the question bad been fully elucidated,

'the President rendered a decision adverselyta"C. Columbus and in favor of G. Wash-inrgton,'to't-

infinite delight of the affirm-ative debaters and the utter disgust of the

- champions of the negative. We didn'tet"in until the debate was about closed or we'would hats put in a lick for the Columbusfellows, as we always were in favor or the"'adsr dog in the fight." The question se-

lected for the next meeting, "JSesolved, Thatthe works of nature are more pleasing ton

the eye than the works of art" is a fruitfultheme and one well calculated to developthe artistic taste of the participants in the'discission. (Wonder bow many of the de-

baters on the affirmative will point the Pres-- "

Ident to a pretty woman as a sockdolagerargument in favor of nature's handiwork? We were pleased to see that the Debating

'Club was well attended and that a generalinterest was manifested rn the proceedings, and wish that the youngsters of Albany

1 had a sufficient desieefur the improvementand cultivation of their minds to copy afterthe Scio people in the formation of a sim-ilar literary society.

We learned thai the young people of Scio, beaded by that star performer andble r, Tom. Thorp, wereing for a dramatic entertainment which theyintended giving on Saturday evening, Jana-ar- j

The letters will be sharp, spicy and gossipy,as well as containing all the elements of po
