ACTIVITY 3 BEFORE READING

Encourage students to speculate and to make guesses, but do not tell them the answers. They will find out as they read that number 3 is the best answer.

While ReadingCHAPTERS 1 AND 2 WHILE READING

1 Why . . .? Because they polluted the planet and it became too hot to live on.

2 What . . .? They died. 3 Why . . .? Because they were the only living things in

4 Where . . .? Dancing round the fire on Remembering Night.

5 Why . . .? Because a woman had to marry any man who asked her on Remembering Night.

6 What . . .? She ran to the robot spaceship, jumped in, and told it to take off.

7 Where . . .?long way from any planets with people on.

8 Why . . .? Because then she could show the Star Council she was doing important work, and perhaps that would be a good reason not to marry Buff.

9 What . . .? Plastic.

CHAPTERS 3 AND 4 WHILE READING

There are seven possible sentences:

BEFORE READING CHAPTER 5

Encourage students to speculate and to make guesses, but do not tell them the answers. They will find out as they read that Hummy finds a computer in the round room, feels surprised, afraid, sad, happy, and excited, and leaves the Star Zoo immediately.

CHAPTERS 5 AND 6 WHILE READING

1 The Star Zoo had left Earth twenty thousand years ago.

2 The zoo was made of old plastic bottles, and had many different rooms.

3 The humans had stopped talking because they didn’t need to talk. / it wasn’t necessary to talk.

4 The plan was to take animals to planets everywhere in the Galaxy.

5 Buff went back with Hummy to the Star Zoo because he didn’t believe her story and wanted to find out for himself what was really there.

BEFORE READING CHAPTER 7

Encourage students to speculate and to make guesses, but do not tell them the answers. They will find out as they read that the ‘yes’ answers are numbers 1 and 5.

CHAPTERS 7 AND 8 WHILE READING

Suggested answers: 1 The computer rang a bell, and the animals mended

the hole in the wall. 2 Hummy took care of Buff, but he didn’t get better. 3 Hummy realized that they could never take any

animals out of the Star Zoo because people would go crazy and try to destroy them.

4 The computer thought that they could use a robot animal to teach people about animals.

5 The computer told Hummy to choose an animal that enjoyed playing with humans.

6 The robot made the animal, using plastic, metal, and fur.

BEFORE READING CHAPTER 9

Encourage students to speculate and to make guesses, but do not tell them the answers. They will find out as they read that the robot has made a kitten, and a Star Council official will shoot it, because the sight of it sent everybody crazy.

CHAPTERS 9 AND 10 WHILE READING

1 Because she wanted to feel and look more important when she went to see the Star Council.

2 Because her family robot told the same story as she did, and robots cannot lie.

3 Because they saw the robot animal, which looked just like a real animal.

OXFORD BOOKWORMS LIBRARY STAGE 3 76 THE STAR ZOO

4 Because the new President said that the Star Zoo had to stay a secret.

5 Because robots always make two of everything automatically.

6 Because they had never heard of Earth or the Burning, didn’t know what animals were, and were too young to be afraid.

7 Because he liked her idea and thought it would work.

After ReadingACTIVITY 1 AFTER READING

1 This is Buff. He has just arrived at the Star Zoo with Hummy, gone in through the tunnel, and now sees the wolf coming towards him through the trees.

2 This is the Star Zoo computer. It has sensed that something has entered the spaceship but it doesn’t yet know it is Hummy. The animals will bring Hummy to the Computer in a few days’ time.

3 This is the new President, just after Hummy has explained her plan about introducing animals to humans in slow, careful stages, beginning with robot animals for children in a special room that parents couldn’t go in.

4 This is Hummy’s father. Hummy has just returned home from her first visit to the Star Zoo, and her father is about to call Buff to tell him of her return.

5 This is the family robot that went to the Star Zoo with Hummy and Buff. Hummy has just instructed it to make a robot kitten, and the robot is looking at the real animal and preparing to copy it.

The right order for the story is: 2, 4, 1, 5, 3

ACTIVITY 2 AFTER READING

3 HUMMY : Hi! Just wanted to tell you that I’m fine, and that I’m on New Earth, in the Star Council building.

12 PARENT S: What are you doing on New Earth, Hummy? And where’s Buffalo?

7 HUMMY : He’s in hospital. 4 PARENT S: Why? What’s happened? Has he had an

accident? 13 HUMMY : No, but he’s gone crazy, I’m afraid. It

happened when he saw the animals in the Star Zoo.

10 PARENT S: The Star Zoo? You mean it’s real? It exists? 1 HUMMY : Of course it’s real! Why don’t you believe

me? 8 PARENT S: We thought it was just a story you were

telling, Hummy – because you didn’t want to marry Buffalo.

15 HUMMY : Well, it’s not a story – and I’m not going to marry Buff now he’s crazy.

6 PARENT S: But, Hummy, you’ll have to marry someone. 11 HUMMY : No, I won’t. I’m doing important work

for the galaxy so I don’t have to get married if I don’t want to.

2 PARENT S: Important work for the galaxy? What are you talking about, Hummy?

5 HUMMY : It’s about the animals, but it’ll take too long to explain now. I’ll tell you when I see you.

14 PARENT S: When will that be? When are you coming home?

9 HUMMY : Don’t know. I’m going back to the Star Zoo tomorrow, to begin my work. So bye for now!

ACTIVITY 3 AFTER READING

Words across: donkey, human, squirrel, tool, galaxy, pollute, earth, plastic, star

Words down: computer, spaceship, council, tree, kitten, bird, robot, planet, metal, wheat, animal, wolf, laser

ACTIVITY 4 AFTER READING

Hummy lives on a planet where there are no trees, just fields of wheat that go on for miles and miles. All the work in the house is done by family robots, which look and talk like humans. Travelling through space is easy, and people can go in their spaceships from one side of the galaxy to the other. Nobody has ever seen an animal or a bird because they all died on Earth 20,000 years before.

OXFORD BOOKWORMS LIBRARY STAGE 3 77 THE STAR ZOO

ACTIVITY 5 AFTER READING

1 The sentence is: It became too hot for animals to live. It was written in the Book of Remembering (see page 8).

2 The sentence was about the planet Earth, and the reason why all the animals died.

3 Open answer.s Encourage discussion. Some students might feel that the message of the story is that we should take better care of our planet now, to prevent something like this from ever happening. Other students might feel there is no particular message in

the story because the idea is too fantastic, too far from reality. Both answers are equally valid.

ACTIVITY 6 AFTER READING

Open discussion.

ACTIVITY 7 AFTER READING

Open answers. If it is appropriate to the students’ religious culture, ask if the Star Zoo spaceship reminds them of another great vessel, built to save the world’s animals from an earlier catastrophe. Some students will probably spot the Noah’s Ark allegory. Students could discuss similarities and differences between the two stories.
