FROM THE BOARDROOM

Good afternoon Ladies and Gentleman, Girls and Boys and welcome to the Branch Bros

Stadium. This afternoon we host Harborough Town in the United Counties League Premier Division.

On behalf of everyone connected to the club I’d like to welcome the directors, management, players and supporters of our guests and result apart we hope you enjoy your afternoon.

Today we face a tough test against a Harborough side who have recently picked up some very good wins against Yaxley & Daventry and sit at a very respectable 10th in the table. Today is a good barometer of where we are if we have aspirations of climbing the league table.

Last Saturday was a great effort in beating Baldock Town in very blustery conditions. Our opponents were very good on the ball but we had the cutting edge and even though it was only 1-0 we had the chances to make it more comfortable.

We got through and now have a very tasty derby against UCL rivals Yaxley coming up in the next round of the FA Vase. This has now been switched to Friday 10th November at Yaxley and it would be good to generate a decent crowd there. I have been told England play Germany in a friendly that night but if you’ve seen England play lately then I am sure there will be more entertainment in this FA Vase game!

In midweek we travelled to Blackstones in the KO Cup and after going a goal down to a soft penalty we got back on level terms and finished the first half very strongly. So I was quietly confident we would find another gear in the second half and press for a winner. How wrong was I, as we conceded a very poor goal and even though we created chances were very poor and Blackstones deserved the win. We seemed to lack a bit of quality and the home side appeared to want it more which is a shame. I’m hoping for a positive reaction today.

We now have a run of home games in the league as after today we face Sleaford (Tues 31st), St Andrews (Sat 4th) & Boston (Tues 14th) so it would be good to see if we can get the wins to push us into the top half of the table and also hope to see you here again as getting support from the local community is vital and greatly appreciated.

Last Saturday there was also disappointment for the Reserves as they lost to lower level Moulton in the NFA Junior Cup. Soundly beaten 3-0 so a bad day at the office. A credible point was earned in the week at Whitworth’s which ensures they are still in the mix at the top of the Reserve Division table. Today they travel to Cogenhoe United and we wish Marcos, Mark and the lads the best of luck as they look to get 3 more points on the road.

Enjoy the game!

A Brief History Of

PETERBOROUGHNORTHERN STAR

Before Northern Star, there was Northam Star.

It is believed Peterborough Northern Star has its roots in Eye village football, where the team played in the Peterborough and District Football League under three different names in four spells from 1905 to 1930, with a couple of breaks. Including one for the First World War.

In 1931, Northam Star Sports Club was born, taking over from Eye United and combining works teams from the Northam and Dogsthorpe Star brick works. The team’s debut season in a reorganised Peterborough and District Football League saw them taking part in the new Division Three North and they opened their campaign with a 5-2 defeat away to Paston Athletic Reserves.

Their first season saw Northam Star finish a respectable sixth in a league of ten teams.

Northam Star had a long history in the PDFL, winning Division Three North twice, before the team

disbanded and a change of name became necessary in 1959.

The new club, under the name Eye United, was a dominant force in the PDFL, winning ten league titles between 1960 and 2003 which included a hat-trick of Premier Division titles at the turn of the 1980s. In the 2000/01 season, Eye United won all thirty league games and romped to the title by sixteen points.

From 1973 to 2003, Eye United won five Senior Cups, which included another hat-trick from 2000/01 to 2002/03 and they also won the Jack Hogg Shield four times in a row from 2000 to 2003. It was time to move on and they took their place in the United Counties League Division One in 2003/04, moving from Lindisfarne Road to their current base in Dogsthorpe.

After two seasons in UCL Division

One, in which the team finished third and fourth, a decision was made to change name as there was some confusion caused by the move out of Eye, whilst retaining the Eye United name. Rather than change back to Northam Star, which would have kept the Eye connection alive, the club debuted as Peterborough Northern Star in 2005/06, finishing ninth.

It did not take long for success to come to Chestnut Avenue, and Star won the UCL Div One in 2008/09. A second placed finish the following season was enough to see the club promoted to the Premier Division and the club won its first Hinchingbrooke Cup that year.

In the UCL Premier Division, the club finished its debut

season in a creditable ninth place and a couple of years later had a remarkable run to the quarter finals of the FA Vase, where it took eventual winners Dunston to stop Star with a 4-3 win in a thrilling match in front of over 600 spectators.

Following the departure of manager Chris Plummer that team broke up, and the seasons since 2012 have seen frequent changes of manager

and playing staff, which has led to an unsettled period for the club.

Despite this, success continues to be achieved at all levels from juniors to youths and reserves in 2014/15, the Star first team secured its second Hinchingbrooke Cup with a victory over Deeping Rangers and reached the final again the following year, where we were defeated by Peterborough Sports.

For the 2016/17 season, we welcomed Raff Mazzarella back to the club as first team manager, following a previous spell in charge of the club’s reserve side, which saw his team finish runners up in the league and win the Reserve KO Cup. A difficult campaign in many ways

saw an improved league position of 15th on the previous year and in context can be regarded as successful.

The 2017/18 season sees the club enter an exciting new period, with several changes on and off the field.

Raff has stepped down as first team manager and moved upstairs to become the club’s director of football, with a wide ranging brief. He will, however, remain on the touchline as he takes control of our U18 sides to oversee the progression of players from youth football to the first team.

We also have a new man in charge of the reserves, with Marcos

Batchelor taking the reins, and we have relaunched our successful ladies team, with Dean Steward bringing them fully on board with the rest of the club.

Our new first team manager is Rob Ward. Rob is a young manager and highly qualified coach with a background that includes management at U21 level and PDFL level and coaching at Step 5.

He joins the club after two successful seasons at Ketton in the PDFL, where he was joint manager of last season’s Daniels Cup winning side.

A Brief History OfHARBOROUGH

TOWNfinished in second place, earning promotion to the UCL Premier Division.Once again the transition proved difficult with bottom three finishes in the first three seasons, however, the 2015-16 saw a change in manager and club fortunes.

Former player Nick Pollard guided the club into 11th place with a storming second half of the season. 2016-17 saw a repeat 11th place in the Premier Division, although with a strong first half of the season this time, and a semifinal in the Leicestershire Challenge Cup. Nick left the club in September 2017.

Former players who have gone on to higher levels of sport include Richard Stearman who went on to play for Leicester City and currently plays for Sheffield United, as well as playing for the England under 21 side, Chris Carruthers who later played for Northampton Town, Bristol Rovers and England under 20s, and Martin Johnson who went on to play rugby union for Leicester Tigers, England and the British Lions.

Harborough Town F.C are based in the town of Market Harborough, and plays its home matches at

Bowden’s Park.

The club became an FA Charter Standard Club in 2004 and through consistent development has achieved FA Charter Standard Community Club status which is the highest accolade currently available and recognises best practice, on-going development and a positive impact within the local community.

The club currently operates 36 teams including Minis, Girls, Junior, Youth, Ladies, Inclusive, Senior and Veteran sides.

The club was formed at the start of the 1975–76 season as Harborough Town Juniors, and developed its own facilities on Northampton Road in the early 1990s.

In 2007 they merged with Harborough Spencers and Harborough Minis to form Harborough Town FC.

The 2007–08 season saw the club, managed by Andy ‘Stan’ Wilson, finish in second place in Division 1 of the Northants Combination and earned promotion to the Premier Division. They also lifted the Division 1 League Cup, beating Welford Victoria 6–1.

The club spent the next two seasons in the Premier Division, before winning the league the in 2009–10 and earning promotion to the United Counties League Division 1.

Harborough had a disappointing first season in the UCL, finishing bottom of the division. However, in the 2011–12 season The Bees, as they had become known as, made the first round proper of the FA Vase, losing 1–0 in a replay against local rivals S & L Corby, and

THE MANAGER’S VIEW

This week we welcome Harborough Town to the Branch Bros Stadium in our second meeting with

them already this season.

The first meeting earlier in the season was a hard fought 1-1 draw. To come away from Bowden Park with a point on any day is a good result but after such a tough test we were really pleased.

We are buoyed up this week after our FA Vase success last Saturday where we defended resolutely against a strong Baldock side and won 1-0 in front of our home fans.

I was really pleased with the performance and result last week, we took the game to Baldock and were rewarded with an early goal from Dan Smith in the 7th minute.

We dominated up until the half hour mark which again was pleasing, Baldock then pushed on more to try and get an equaliser and it meant our defence was really tested for the remainder of the game and I was proud

of our lads to withstand such pressure. When we did get out and attack we made some good chances, but just couldn’t get the second goal.

A win is a win in the cup so the score line is not important just the result and I’m glad we are in the hat for the next round.

I spoke in last week’s programme about a turn of fortune since the defeat away to league leaders Leicester Nirvana. The return of injured players and continuity in the lineup has also continued and that’s been reflected in our results.

Despite playing away from the Branch Bros Stadium for most of September and October (70% fixtures have been away) we have managed to get some good results. That all changes in November and December though with the majority of our games being at home.

It is always great to be at home and I really hope we can bring our improved form back with us and build some good momentum at home so we can push on to the end of 2017 to see ourselves sitting in the top half of the table and still fighting in the various cups.

Today I am expecting another good test from Harborough, they were a very physical side last time and were keen to win the aerial battles in the middle of the park which was what led to their goal last time.

We must be prepared again to compete with that threat as well as be on guard against balls over the top as they also utilised that at home.

I, as always, have full confidence in our lads to come through this test and if we can continue to move the ball at pace as we have over the last few weeks I would hope it proves fruitful for us again and we can get a result.

RESERVE TEAM ROUNDUP

Afternoon all. Today we have a league game against Cogenhoe United Reserves away. This

presents a great opportunity for us to have a good look at them for our cup fixture against them in the next round of the KO Cup.

We’ve had a recent blip in our form losing a cup game vs Moulton in the junior Cup - this comes on the back of three consecutive wins so is a disappointing result, but again we will try to take positives.

The positives here being that it is another learning opportunity and here we learned we need to improve in recognising danger, dealing with it, and taking that responsibility as individuals on the field.

We go into the game today on the back of a hard fought draw away to Wellingborough Whitworths, where we picked up where we left off at Moulton and ended better than we started so again, progress.

If we turn up and continue in the same vein then we have every chance to get ourselves right in the mix

with the teams competing for the top spots, if we take three points.

We’re a young exciting team and we look forward to every challenge thrown at us, so there’s no pressure from us on the lads other than to work hard and keep learning.

As we head into November we have an away game with second placed Northampton ON Chenecks next Saturday, then we have three home fixtures in the space of ten days.

First off we face Potton in two weeks time on the Saturday, then the following Saturday we play at home against Newport Pagnell Town, which promises to be a good game as they are just ahead of us in the table at the time of writing.

We then end our home fixtures for November with a midweek game on the 21st with Stewarts and Lloyds, before a busy month comes to a close with two away fixtures.

The first of these is a league clash with Irchester United on the 25th, then we face today’s opponents, Cogenhoe United, in the KO Cup on the 28th.

I hope to see you all soon.
