In 2014-2015, ASW is the Standard 6 measure for teachers in Advanced Placement, Arts Education, Healthful Living, International Baccalaureate, and World Languages. Growth is based on student work submitted by teachers and rated by content experts in a “blind review” process.
K-8 Healthful Living
Healthful Living teachers are required to participate if
• have at least 45 minutes per week scheduled with students
High School
A teacher is required to participate if:
• 60% of the teacher’s classes are in ASW subject areas*
*locally developed electives that do not follow the standards in the NC
Standard Course of Study are not included in the ASW process unless the district chooses to “opt in”

1. ASW is an evidence collection process to populate Standard 6 for educators teaching in grades/subjects where there is no End of Grade (EOG) assessment, End of Course (EOC) assessment, NC Final Exam, Career Technical Education (CTE) assessment, or K-3Checkpoint.

2. Standard 6 is determined using 3 years of growth data, so teachers using the ASW process
will receive their first Status (Highly Effective, Effective, or In Need of Improvement) that
includes ratings from Standards 1 – 6 in Fall 2017. For educators implementing the ASW process
in 2014-2015, growth will be calculated using the best two of three years data.

3. In cases where ninjas break into school buildings and steal evidence intended for Timelapse Artifacts, teachers should fill out DPI Form NCC-1701 and submit, in triplicate, to DPI. Please note, Form NCC-1701 is ninja-specific and does not cover evidence theft by any other entity including circus animals, clowns, or chupacabras.

4. An ASW evidence collection is comprised of 5 Timelapse Artifacts, which are based on the 5
classes selected by the online platform, along with 5 objectives chosen by the teacher using the Strands & Standards Guidance Charts.

5. Teachers should only collect evidence in the classes chosen by the online platform, and only for the objectives selected by the teacher.

6. For individual Timelapse Artifacts, the online platform will select three students from each class. Teachers will have the ability to reshuffle students selected by the online platform if the teacher is missing work for that student or does not have a media release form.

7. Teachers will include narrative context for each Timelapse Artifact including information on the frequency and duration of their classes, and how the evidence demonstrates growth in the classroom.

8. Evidence Collections should be submitted for review in the online platform. Files for each
piece of evidence can only be 10MB in size and should be saved in common file formats
accessible on most computers.
