Shades of Green: Where to Find Green Jobsand Green JobsTraining ProgramsDoug LewinWhat are green jobs?Where do you train for one? Howmany are there and what do they pay? This talk will focus ongreen jobs related to renewable energy and energy efficiency, providing the audience with valuable information onfinding green jobs, and gaining the training and experience necessary to perform in that career.

Doug Lewin is currently helpingmanage Good Company Associates Green Jobs Initiative, a collaborative project with thenonprofit Texas Foundation for Innovative Communities, that aims to supply subjectmatter expertise and provide a commonlink for clean energy businesses, educators, workforce agencies, chambers of commerce, and other interested stakeholders.

WATERCONSERVATIONPANEL:WaterConservation,InstreamFlows, andWaterQuantity intheRegionMeredith BlountThe population in Texas (and especially in Central Texas) is expected to grow so rapidly as to double by 2040. However, waterresources in the area are currently over-appropriated andmany local watersheds are already impaired and are in noway preparedfor the impendingpopulation growth anddevelopment. Themajority of currentwater rights in the state are still held by agriculture, while the greatest demand for water lies within themunicipal and Industrial/Commercial/Institutional sectors, although this willbegin to change rapidly. There are several economic, social andenvironmental impacts associatedwith the futurepopulationgrowthand resulting water demand. The TexasWater Development Board is calling for billions of gallons of water to be saved throughconservation, the implementation of which will eventually be passed on through legislative changes and through municipalwater providers in the forms of initiatives, regulations and even rate increases. On the individual level, people can save water, energy, andmoney by practicing conservation in their homes, including changes in behavior, adoption of rainwater collection, gray water use, changing landscaping techniques, installation of high efficiency devices and plumbing, andminimizing leaks.

Meredith Blount is a native Austinite who lives and operates a small ranch outside of Austin in Caldwell County,TXwhere sheutilizes several water conservation techniques. She recently finished herMaster’s of Science in Biology (Aquatic Biology/AquaticResources) fromTexas State University in SanMarcos, workingwith water conservation assessment andmodeling. She is also aConservation Specialist at the River Systems Institute atTexas StateUniversitywhere she is involved inmultiplewatermanagementand conservation projects, including a comprehensive binational management plan for the entire Rio Grande River basin.Sheis currently participating in several local projects, including a regional water conservation assessment and valuation study incollaborationwithThe Austin Area Research Organization;a Blanco RiverWatershedmanagement and conservation plan;and anendangered species habitat requirement study in the SanMarcos and Comal rivers. Meredith is also amember and contributorto the Gulf of Mexico Alliance,The Alliance forWater Efficiency,The Initiative forWatershed Excellence,The Altamaha RiverkeeperFoundation and is also a volunteer outdoor water education and aquatic biology instructor for Raven Star Outdoor Education. She has previously been involvedwith coastal preservation and restoration as well as river and estuary toxicology studies.

WATERCONSERVATIONPANEL:Energy andWater IssuesDr. Carey King“Water and energy are inextricably linked. Water is required for many parts of the energy supply chain, and energy isrequired for distributing and treating water for drinking, irrigation, and other purposes. Dr. King will focus on the waterrequirements for (1) electricity generation using renewable and fossil fuels and (2) transportation onmultiple fuels (gasoline, ethanol, electric vehicles, etc.) with respect to different contexts: the consumer, the United States, and the globe.”

Dr.Carey King,Research Associate at Jackson School of Geosciences, studies energy systems, how theywork together, how theyimpact the environment, and how andwhy humans as a society consume energy resources. He specializes in dynamic systemsmodeling and nonlinear optimizationmethods.Much of his recent work has focused on the nexus between energy andwater forprojectingwater demand for electricity generation and alternative automobile fuels. As part of his energy-water studies,Dr.Kinghas authored journal publications,a chapter for theTexas State Energy Conservation Office on the role of water in Texas' energyfuture as well as a report for theTexasWater Development Board that projects water demand scenarios for future electricity pro-duction. Additional work in which Dr.King is engaged includes the economics of carbon capture and sequestration, the design ofbeneficial combinations of renewable energy and storage systems, and the creation of tools to help the public and policymakersunderstand the tradeoffs among different electricity generation sources. Before joining the University of Texas at Austin,Dr.Kingwas Director of Scientific Research at UniPixel Displays, Inc., a company developing a new flat panel display technology baseduponmicroelectromechanical systems.Dr.King is a former National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow, and holds both a B.S.with High Honors and Ph.D. from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin.

Changing Perceptions:HowOneGreen Building CanChange aCityJimVaughanJim Vaughan's talk will discuss the process and transformation that occurred forWaco beginning with the construction ofthe "First Green Chamber Building in America". It was a culmination of effort and vision for the future, setting a standardfor new construction downtown with an urban scale building that is oriented to the street rather than a parking lot, andwith windows and doors opening on to sidewalks to make streets safer and more interesting and with architecture ap-propriate to both our history and our vision for downtown. The building also represents the community’s desire to pursueenvironmentally sound construction practices to makeWaco a green, livable city and to revitalize downtown.

Jim Vaughan has served as President and CEO of the GreaterWaco Chamber of Commerce since May 2004.His prioritiesat the Chamber include strengthening the regional economy and improving the community’s quality of life. Examples ofthe Chamber’s work in this area include implementing a five-year strategic plan for economic and community development, and partnering with the City ofWaco and others to develop the Greater Downtown Plan to transform the city’s riverfront, central business district and close-in commercial and residential neighborhoods. The Chamber serves the communityand its members from the First Green Chamber Building in America completed in 2008.The building was the first to bedesigned and constructed to meet LEED standards and was the first LEED-Gold certified building in Central Texas.Hewas honored as a“Difference Maker” in 2006 by theWaco Tribune Herald.
