IN MEMORY OF SALLY MEYERHOFFXTERRA is dedicating thisyear’s race to Sally Meyerhoff. All the championship race bibshave “Sally” in the background, and she will be rememberedduring a moment of silence priorto the race.

Just three months after winning the 2010 XTERRA Trail RunWorld Championship, Meyerhoff’s life ended tragically onMarch 8. She was killed in a cycling accident in her home-town of Maricopa, Ariz. According to media reports,Meyerhoff collided with a pick-up truck in an intersectionand died at the scene. She was 27.

Meyerhoff ran her way into XTERRA lore on Dec. 5, 2010.In her first attempt at Worlds, she not only won it, she set awomen’s course record in 1 hour, 28 minutes, 58 seconds.

In a moment from the race that has already been immortal-ized on video, Meyerhoff tripped and fell off a ledge late inthe course at Kualoa Ranch. She dropped several feetdown into a patch of bushes. In typical Meyerhoff fashion, she climbed back up to the trail and continued to run, neverlooking back.

Meyerhoff made it known – through her running blog and inmedia interviews-- that the XTERRA victory rejuvenated hercareer. “I don’t do a ton of trail running, but I do marathonsand half-marathons and I train really hard at the profession-al level,” she said after her win. “This race tested me like I’venever been tested before.”

A month after Kualoa Ranch, she won the P.F. Chang’sRock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon – a race she said she alwayswanted to win. With that, she set her sights on two loftiergoals. One was the 2012 Olympics. The other was the 2011Ironman World Championships triathlon. Her plan was tocompete in her first Ironman in October, then focus onmaking the U.S. Olympic marathon team.

Prior to her XTERRA Trail Run World Championship,Meyerhoff was already a recognized figure in the runningworld. She was an All-American runner at Duke Universitybefore beginning her professional running career. In 2009,she set an American record for a 10-mile road run at 54minutes, 38 seconds.

Team X-T.R.E.M.E. will participate in the 2011 XTERRA TrailRun World Championship on December 4 at Kualoa Ranch, thanks in part to a generous boost from Outrigger Hotels &Resorts.

Team X-T.R.E.M.E. is a non-profit organization with anongoing mission to Honor, Empower and Motivate woundedservice members of the Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns. The team features active and veteran military members whoparticipate in various races across the country to honor thesacrifice of Wounded Warriors through feats of mental andphysical endurance.

The last five letters in the team name stand for Train,Rehabilitate, Empower, Motivate, and Endure. They alwaysrun races in formation to emphasize teamwork, and they willrun the entire 21-kilometer course at Kualoa Ranch with gasmasks secured to their faces to symbolize their initiative.

The members of Team X-T.R.E.M.E. will be traveling toHawaii from various areas of the mainland United States, sosponsorship was crucial. Outrigger Hotels & Resorts

recently stepped in to host the team – and a special guest –during their week in Hawaii.

In addition to the four Team X-T.R.E.M.E. runners, MarineCpl. Todd Love will accompany the team to Hawaii as theirguest of honor. Love lost both his legs and part of his leftarm when an explosive device was triggered while he wason a reconnaissance mission in Afghanistan in Oct. 2010.

“Cpl. Love is not deterred by his injuries and is determinedto live life to the extreme,” said Jeremy Soles, Founder andPresident of Team X-T.R.E.M.E. “Cpl. Love is an ambassa-dor of endurance and perseverance in the face ofinsurmountable odds. It is an honor and pleasure for TeamX-T.R.E.M.E. to escort Cpl. Todd Love and his father toHawaii and to make his XTREME DREAM come true.”

David Carey, President and CEO of Outrigger EnterprisesGroup, said: “Honorable, brave and dedicated - theseadjectives are all defining characteristics of the hard-working members of our U.S. military, a group that we haveutmost respect and admiration for. These heroic men and

HONOR WOUNDED VETERANS LIKE CPL. TODD LOVEwomen serve our country, sacrifice their lives, and give theirall to maintain our safety and protect our freedom. Theirendless sense of service sets them apart, and Outrigger ishonored to support them through Team X-T.R.E.M.E.'sparticipation in the 2011 XTERRA Trail Run WorldChampionship."

Team X-T.R.E.M.E. participated in the XTERRA Trail RunWorld Championship for the first time last year. Soles saidthe challenges presented along the course at Kualoa Ranchgave the team incentive to return this year.

“In keeping with the XTERRA reputation, the course atKualoa Ranch is very challenging. That is the way we likeit,” Soles said. “The more grueling the course, the more ourmission parallels and honors the service and sacrifice of ournation’s wounded warriors.”

Running members of the team this year will be Soles,Matthew Small, Charles Hewitt and Marko Loubser.

Although Love cannot run with the team, he will participatein several other activities with them while in Hawaii, including surfing and skydiving. In fact, the team plans toskydive with Love onto the race site at Kualoa Ranch on themorning of the race.

“Team X-T.R.E.M.E. is honored to have the support ofOutrigger Hotels & Resorts for our 2011 ‘XTREME DREAM’initiative for Cpl. Todd Love,” Soles said. “Their sponsorshipof our rooms will allow us to direct additional funding tomake this the most memorable vacation of Cpl. Love’s life.”

The XTERRA Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit organizationwhose mission is to provide help, support, and hope to theunderprivileged and physically challenged, also dedicated afundraising project specifically for Team X-T.R.E.M.E.’s tripto Hawaii. Through those efforts XTERRA athletes donated$1,500 to support the trip for Cpl. Todd Love.

“Team X-T.R.E.M.E. founder Jeremy Soles, a former Sgt. inthe United States Marine Corps, launched the organizationby running the XTERRA Richmond 10k trail run in a gasmask back in 2009,” explained XTERRA FoundationPresident Tom Kiely. “That got everyone’s attention, especially fellow service members who understand howdifficult it is to breath in those things let alone run a brutalsix-mile obstacle course in 100-degree heat. Since then,he’s accomplished increasingly difficult tasks and honoredseveral wounded veterans along the way. We are proud tosupport his vision.”

Soles noted that several other sponsors have contributed tothe Team X-T.R.E.M.E. cause to make the trip possible:Avon Protection Systems, Camelbak, Survival Straps,Extreme Outfitters, Spartyka Nation, Semper Fidelis Healthand Wellness, 2XU, Skydive Hawaii and Duke’s Waikiki.

THE XTERRA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP COURSELength 21km/13.1 milesStarting Elevation 50’Lowest point 27’Highest point 751’Total climbing approx 2,900’Trails open dirt road, dual track dirt road,

single track & sometimes no track

Starting from the base of Kaaawa Valley, just around thecorner from the main Kualoa Ranch house, the XTERRATrail Running World Championship will start easy enough -taking runners on hard packed dirt roads uphill into the west-ern side of the valley (the right side if you’re looking mauka).

After the first mile runners descend through a pasture andhead back towards the ocean and just after mile two they’llpop out at an elevation of 200’ just above the Pacific withviews forever. The temptation running along the ledge over-looking the turquoise water will be to jump in and call it aday, but the real fun is just beginning.

Runners quickly drop back down on pasture roads and atmile three come into the petting zoo at the main KualoaRanch area. The next few miles head into heavy rainforestumbrella with green all around and several stream crossings(a few inches to ankle deep depending on recent rainfall)along rolling, twisting double track.

At about mile eight the trail gets narrow and steep on a pathleading straight up the mountain that separates Hakipu’uValley from Kaaawa Valley. Here runners get a rare chanceto be on the very narrow spine of a volcanic peak, again –with incredible views of the valley and ocean beyond. Onceat the top, a very neat trail winds its way sharply down intothe back of Kaaawa Valley. At the bottom runners will findrocky dual track and twisting trails that traverse a few morestream crossings before a hard right turn takes them up to along stretch of single track originally created by wild pigs.

Page 11: THE SPONSOR TEAM...country team who finished second overall among all the females at the 2010 XTERRA Trail Run World Championship. The second session will feature elite runners …

11

Passing is possible, but competitors will want to watch theirstep as the trail is narrow and on a slanted slope. Sectionsof rocky, ankle bending chasms formed by the molten lavatens of thousands of years ago will test tired legs, butinspiration is soon to follow. Arising from the cover of greenforested trails runners will find the wide open unusual lightgreen fields of Hawaii. Many will think they’ve got déjà vu,as their memories recall the original Jurassic Park scenewhere the professor and the kids run and hide from thedinosaur stampede – because that’s exactly where they are.

Near the end, the course cuts through the main start/finisharea to the cheers of friends, family and spectators beforeheading out on a final loop in the valley before the sprint tothe finish.

The true adventure of this run lies in the fact that there is nopre-running allowed, so its read and react for everyone.

Above is a rough outline of the course. If you can see thedirectional arrows you’ll notice that runners head into thevalley for the first small loop (3 miles), then around theridgeline and back into the valley from the far side.

THE CONTENDERS

Can anybody catch the King? Who will be the new queen? Those are the two main questions entering the 2011XTERRA Trail Run World Championship at Kualoa Ranch.

In the men’s division, Max King of Oregon is consideredthe favorite, just as he has been for the previous threeyears. King is the three-time defending XTERRA Trail RunWorld Champion, and no other runner has come close tohim during his reign.

As good as King has been the last three years, he may behaving the best year of his career in 2011. He has alreadywon several significant races this year, most notably theWorld Mountain Running Championship in Albania. Hehas also won the XTERRA Trail Run NationalChampionship, the USA Half Marathon TrailChampionships, and the USA Mountain RunningChampionship, all at different sites.

Several contenders from last year are returning in 2011 foranother shot at King. Hawaii’s Rivers Puzey (third place),Brandon Mader (fourth) of Alabama, Bruce Rahmig (sixth)from Colorado and Fujio Miyachi (eighth) of Japan will allbe on the starting line next to King. Where they finishremains to be seen.

There are several intriguing new entries in the men’s field, including a few international entries. Petr Pechek, one ofthe top distance runners from the Czech Republic, is in thefield, along with two elites from New Zealand – NickHirschfeld and Matt McDougall. Others to watch includeJake Puzey and Dany Malley.

Jake Puzey is the older brother of Rivers, and he placedthird at a 50K trail race in Oregon this year (Max King wonthat race, too). Malley, who is originally from Canada, wasthe top runner on the Hawaii Pacific University cross coun-try team this year.

In addition, the overall men’s and women’s winners getroundtrip airfare from Hawaiian Airlines, and there are aton of great product prizes from Paul Mitchell, GU,XTERRA Footwear, Hilo Hatties, Vapur, and Planet Sun.

In the women’s division, there will be a new worldchampion due to the tragic death of last year’s winner,Sally Meyerhoff. She was killed in a cycling accident in herhometown of Maricopa, Arizona, just three months afterwinning the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship. Inher absence, there are numerous entries that can beconsidered legitimate contenders.

Last year’s runner-up, Kim Kuehnert, is back, along withother top-10 finishers Melanie McQuaid (third), RachelCieslewicz (fifth), Candes Meijide Gentry (sixth) andHeather Singleton (ninth).

There is a former world champion in the women’s field, as2008 winner Cynthia Anderson of Hawaii has returnedafter taking last year off due to injuries. She placedsecond overall in 2009.

There is also a former Ironman world champion in thefield, as California’s Heather Fuhr has returned. She wonthe Ironman World Championship in 1997, and placedthird overall in the women’s field of the 2009 XTERRATrail Run World Championship.

There is also a current XTERRA National Champion in thefield, as Morgan Arritola of Idaho will be making her firstappearance in Hawaii. Arritola, who is a member of theUSA cross country skiing team, won the 2011 XTERRATrail Run National Championship at Utah in September.

Eva Skalnikova from the Czech Republic is a dual athletejust like Arritola. Skalnikova is also an Olympic crosscountry skier and an elite runner. There are also eliteinternational runners from New Zealand (Rachel Bowie)and Canada (Lucy Smith, Susan Reynolds).

It is worth noting that a record number of entries (morethan 1,800) from around the world are expected this year,so a dark horse contender could literally emerge fromanywhere to challenge for a world title.

KING REIGNS OVER FIELD AT XTERRA WORLDS AGAIN

MEYERHOFF TAKES WOMEN’S TITLE IN FIRST TRY

Dec. 5, 2010 – Max King (pictured) found the perfect curefor a sickness – win the XTERRA Trail Run WorldChampionship.

Despite running with flu-like symptoms, King won theXTERRA Trail Run World Championship for the thirdconsecutive year at Kualoa Ranch. King, who is from Bend,Oregon, completed the 12.9 mile course in 1 hour, 16minutes, 36 seconds.

“I didn’t even know if I was going to make it to the race thismorning, let alone win,” said King, 30. “I had a headache,my fever was going down, but I still felt terrible. But when Igot here and started running on the course, I was surprisedthat I felt a lot better than I thought I would. I guess after allthese years, running makes me feel pretty normal.”

When it comes to running XTERRA Trail RunChampionship races, King is beyond normal. He is now 6-0 in the last six major XTERRA trail run races – threeconsecutive victories in the national championship race, and now three consecutive wins in the world championshiprace.

In the women’s race, Sally Meyerhoff of Arizona took thevictory in her first try at the XTERRA Trail Run WorldChampionship.

Meyerhoff normally enters road races (she is the Americanrecord holder for a 10-mile road race), but she proved herworth on the tricky trails of Kualoa Ranch. She completedthe course in a women’s record time of 1:28:58, which wasgood for ninth place overall, and nearly eight minutesahead of the next female.

“I don’t do a ton of trail running, but I do marathons andhalf-marathons and I train really hard at the professionallevel,” said Meyerhoff, 26. “But this race tested me like I’venever been tested before.”

Indeed, Meyerhoff collapsed after crossing the finish lineand needed medical attention. She was eventually fineafter receiving intravenous fluids.

King and Meyerhoff each received $2,000.

XTERRA TRAIL RUNNING SERIES OVERVIEW

In its infancy, XTERRA Trail Runs were put on as a sideevent for the XTERRA off-road triathlons. Well, those trailruns are all grown up now.

Now in its seventh year as a stand-alone set of races, theXTERRA Trail Run Series has gone global. In 2011, itfeatured more than 60 races in 17 states and severalcountries, providing runners the opportunity to chase trailsaround the world.

In 2011, 12 regions across the United States hosted anXTERRA Trail Run Series: Alabama, Arizona, SouthernCalifornia, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio,Philadelphia, Pocono, South Carolina and Texas. Therewere also races (but not series) in Colorado, Hawaii,Nevada, New Hampshire, New York and Virginia.

What’s more, international XTERRA Trail Run events werestaged in Canada, South Africa, Brazil, New Zealand,Philippines, Saipan and Japan.

The main focus of the XTERRA Trail Run Series is the off-road half-marathon (21 kilometers). Only seven years ago,the XTERRA Trail Runs were limited to 10K and 5Kcourses. Tom Kiely, CEO of XTERRA, explained that “aftera decade of producing trail runs alongside our XTERRA off-road triathlons, we learned that our audience wanted abigger challenge than a 10K. What the market told us wasto create a series of half-marathons that have a physicalchallenge parallel to that of a road marathon, but withMother Nature along for the ride.”

In 2008, two significant events were added to the XTERRATrail Run Series schedule: the XTERRA Trail Run NationalChampionship and the XTERRA Trail Run WorldChampionship. The national championship race waspreviously held in Nevada and Oregon, and now callsSnowbasin Resort near Ogden, Utah, its home. The worldchampionship race is held every December at thepicturesque Kualoa Ranch, Oahu, Hawaii.

“The U.S. Trail Run Series is the fastest-growing segment ofXTERRA, and the National Championship race has turnedinto a really big deal,” Kiely said. “Bend was an incrediblesite for the race for three years, and now we’ve foundanother amazing place to visit and explore in SnowbasinResort. It truly is an ideal venue for the race. And to haveKualoa Ranch as our host site for the World Championship

race is beyond words. You really have to see it for yourself.”

The XTERRA Trail Run World Championship has becomeone of the largest trail runs in the world, attracting close to2,000 runners. The site at Kualoa Ranch on the northeastside of the island of Oahu is nothing short of magical.Arguably the most stunning natural landscape in Hawaii, the4,000-acre working cattle ranch has been the setting forsuch major movie productions as Jurassic Park, Godzillaand Pearl Harbor.

But the XTERRA Trail Runs are not just for elite runners.Part of the allure is the diversity of courses. Almost everyevent in the XTERRA Trail Run Series offers at least twochoices of courses, ranging from 5K trails to the half-marathons. Both the National Championship and WorldChampionship events offer three courses (5K, 10K, 21K).Some events are even starting to integrate full-marathoncourses (42K) into the mix. In short, there is something foreverybody.

XTERRAGEAR.COM NEWSLightweight XTERRA Shoes

Designed to Help Athletes Stalk

Their On-Course Prey

TJ Gray — one of the designers of

XTERRA’s new line of footwear and

apparel — stood at the finish line of the

XTERRA World Championship in Maui

in October 2008. While many of the

competitors lay in bed the night before

counting sheep in anticipation of the

race, that afternoon Gray was counting

shoes.

Road shoe, road shoe, road shoe.

As athletes poured down from the

lower slopes of Mount Haleakala from their nearly seven-

mile trail run over roots, rocks and ravines, Gray and Brown

couldn’t believe their eyes. “Maybe one in 100 was a trail

runner,” said Brown, who along with partner Gray have also

developed shoes for Nike, adidas and Salomon. “They

were all sacrificing stability for less weight.”

They returned to the drawing board, determined to make

XTERRA the lightest — but still, most stable — trail running

shoe on the market. With four months until the launch of the

shoes at the Outdoor Retailer show in Salt Lake City,

designs were tweaked, materials tested — including a

unique combination of lighter blown rubber in the forefoot

and a heavier high-abrasion carbon rubber in the heel.

But their biggest scientific sport discovery was yet to come.

After much trial and error in their New Hampshire lab, a

molding model never before seen in the category was

created. Gone was a traditional glued-together midsole,

replaced by a dual-injected, dual-density EVA made of two

layers — the top soft, the bottom harder — giving comfort

and stability while taking away weight.

The result: an eco-friendly design that’s one of the lightest

trail runners ever, weighing in at less than 10.5 ounces for

men, 9.5 for women.

With the weight issue solved, multi-sport competitors Gray

and Brown began to research every movement taken on a

trail — the footplant and lateral pushoff around a 90-degree

directional path change, the flexed-footed jump over water,

the balanced gripped-toe run across a log.

As they were going for a timed run in the woods near their

studios — furiously passing each other, taking turns as the

lead — the big-picture design inspiration for XTERRA’s new

footwear line came: a big-cat predator’s paw.

“Chasing its prey, a big cat grips into the earth — digging

into loose gravel, dirt, gaining time and distance on every

step, every leap,” said Gray, a former collegiate decathlete

at Syracuse.

“The outer part of their foot acts like a traction pad,” he

continued. “It’s from there that we came up with XTERRA’s

unique outsole lug concept.”

The concept’s name: WILDTred. According to Gray and

Brown, its carved claw-like perimeter lug design forms

independent touch pads from forefoot to heel with deep flex

zones for controlled, wrap-around grip. They also noted the

lugs are higher than the shoe bottom’s concave center,

helping it act as its front and rear suspension while creating

a larger surface area.

“With the cat’s paw, we liked the symbolism of man’s

co-existence with all things found in the environment, said

Brown. “We adapt to our surroundings, whether it be

animal, plant or any of nature’s elements.

Continued Brown: “The thought behind XTERRA’s new line

is that the outdoors are no longer to be conquered; they’re

to be connected with.”

XTERRA’s footwear launch includes five styles: trail

runner, trail trainer, ultra trainer, performance sandal, and

performance slide.

HOW XTERRA GOT STARTEDIT REALLY STARTED in the late '80's. That's when Tom

Kiely (CEO of TEAM Unlimited - owners and producers of

XTERRA) was tasked with creating more publicity for the

Waikiki Oahu Visitors Association. His idea was sports TV.

"First, sports is part of our life blood in Hawaii, and second,

what looks good on TV? The beaches and the ocean,"

explained Kiely.

The concept was pretty simple. TV sports and

entertainment is one of the biggest industries in the world.

The travel industry is THE BIGGEST industry in the world.

Bring those two together in programming, and you've got

something big.

So he came up with the idea for the Hawaiian International

Ocean Challenge - a lifeguard skills competition that

attracted water safety specialists from Australia, New

Zealand, California, and of course, Hawaii.

Then, he forged a relationship with ESPN - the worldwide

leader in sports.

In 1990 the Ocean Challenge was broadcast on ESPN,

and millions of viewers were exposed to the beauty of

Waikiki - the sun, sand, and crystal clear blue water of the

Pacific Ocean. Subsequently, this is where David "Kahuna"

Nicholas enters the picture - as "race director."

"So we get into producing the Ocean Challenge," says

Kiely. "And now I'm thinking I've got all these athletes and

TV crews and if it costs me this much to produce one show,

it'll cost less for another, and even less for a third."

ESPN approves two more shows (Waikiki King's Race and

Diamond Head Wahine Windsurfing Classic) and in 1991

TEAM Unlimited produces three events and three TV

shows. The concept is working, and Hawaii is reaping the

benefits of the outdoor exposure the shows are generating.

"So the next year (1992) we produced seven Hawaiian

Sports Adventure Showsmultiple segments, different

stories, great scenics, and 30-minutes of entertaining, good

fun stuff," said Kiely.

Those seven shows were in addition to the Ocean

Challenge and a few others televised events, including the

inaugural Tour O' Hawaii.

"Now that was a great event," said Nicholas - now the

managing director of the XTERRA Global Tour. "The Tour

O' Hawaii happened before professional cyclists were

allowed to compete in the Olympics so the top riders from

every country kept their amateur status so they could race

in the Olympics. We just missed Lance because he signed

with Motorola, but we had George Hincapie, Jan Ulrich,

Tyler Hamilton, and dozens of others. Looking back, the

field was a who's who of international cycling."

A few years later the Olympics allowed pros to compete,

road cycling in the U.S. was on the decline, and the Tour O'

Hawaii was no more. At the same time, however, mountain

biking was taking off. So in 1995, in addition to 12 other TV

shows and several events, TEAM Unlimited produced the

Hawaiian Mountain Tour.

In doing so Nicholas and mountain bike Hall-of-Famer

Dean Crandall established the rules and held the first-ever

mountain bike stage race. This is also where many of the

XTERRA greats first appeared. The likes of Ned Overend,

Shari Kain, Melanie McQuaid, Steve Larsen, Mike Kloser,

Leslie Tomlinson, and host of others were taking part in the

Hawaiian Mountain Tour. Now these races took place at

Kualoa Ranch on Oahu, where the Koolau mountain range

meets the ocean, and the story goes that after their races

the mountain bikers would ride down to the beach and jump

in the water. It sparked a thoughtwhy not have a

mountain bike triathlon?

By 1996 TEAM Unlimited had produced more than 50

shows and sporting events, and while the idea of an off-road

triathlon was enticing - who'd pay for it?

Almost simultaneously, the Aston Hotel in Maui (now the

Wailea Marriott Resort) was shopping for a good idea for

their grand opening and the Maui Visitors Bureau was

looking for a new event that could tell a different story about

Maui's south shore because all the exposure up to that point

was golf. Well, what better way to show off the hotel and

south shore than 1) starting the race at this beautiful beach

in front of the sponsor hotel, 2) follow a race that covers 21

miles of terrain with two dozen camera's, and 3) put it on TV

for the whole world to see?

Add a phone call to Kiely from a friendly competitor in the

marketplace (to remain unnamed) inquiring on the very

subject of producing an off-road triathlon and you have all

the main ingredients for XTERRA's birth.

Kiely likes to define luck as the "intersection of

opportunity and activity." He recalls bringing Nicholas and

VP of Marketing Janet Clark into his office.

"Look, I said, so-and-so called me and said that they were

thinking about doing an off-road tri and if they do, then we're

forever second, so we have to be the first ones to do it. I

immediately called Aston and the MVB and said O.K., I've

got the idea, here's the thing, bing, bang, boom," said Kiely.

"And that's what got us started in XTERRA."

At the finish line of the very first XTERRA race in 1996 it was clear that XTERRA was going to be more than just a one-off event. There was passion in the eyes of the competitors and an unwavering feeling that XTERRA was destined tobecome a lifestylea movement.

And look at what XTERRA has become
