PURPOSE OF A SPEC SHEET

The term spec is an abbreviation of the word specification and it means to record all of the particulars of a garment.

Those particulars include the garment’s finished measurements, the placement, style and size of all trims and notions, and the detailing of all stitches, fabrics, etc. used within the garment.

The specifications are recorded onto a “spec sheet”. Spec sheets are used in every phase of apparel design and production, and their importance and accuracy are critical.

When specing a garment, it is essential to take your time and measure twice, or more if necessary, to accurately measure all points needed.

Good specs and precise garment measuring are the way to ensure a good fit and a good quality control.

CONCLUSION

Spec Sheet may also be called a TD sheet ( Technical Details Sheet).

May be simple or elaborate depending on the buyer and the buyers’ preference.

The merchandiser is the first in line to receive the spec sheet.

The merchandiser may study the spec sheet and convert it into a simpler format for internal use.

Any discrepancies in the spec sheet will have to be pointed out and corrected before commencement of sampling.

All details will have to be followed accurately.

Costing will have to be based on the details contained in the spec sheet.

The relationship between the merchandiser and the spec sheet is integral. If any mistakes in the spec sheet is overlooked, the merchandiser would have to be answerable both to the buyer and to the management he/she works for.

The merchandiser will have to discuss with the production and purchases team, the details contained in the spec sheet. Any feedback from these teams will have to be communicated to the buyer promptly.

Finally, the spec sheet is the beginning and ending point of an order and the success of execution depends on how accurately the specifications have been adhered to.
