Southwest Suburban Dallas Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary ! December 31, 2012

Vol. 1 Issue 1

The Past, Present & Future

2002-2012 Ten years ago the culmination of hard work and devotion became a reality during the installation of the Southwest Suburban Dallas Chapter. Many mothers sacraficed their time and remained diligent during the provisional chapter period and many years of community service and child development has been the fruit of their labor and labor of many hard working committed mothers who have followed. Our Chapter Organizer, Teresa Bright, joined our Chapter President, Denise Wall, and Teen President, Ahmani Wall, during a Past-Present-& Future presentation on the roof top of the celebratory anniversary party in Downtown Dallas earlier this year. We even got to see three versions of “the Dougie”—that’s a popular dance for those un-hip newsletter readers. Photo boards reflecting 10 years of history were on display while the chapter families enjoyed a feast of food and merriment .The charter moms have received gifts from the chapter in recognition of the anniversary. The evening offered an opportunity for each to write their goals on pink and blue balloons which were released into the evening sky, observed by all. Thanks again to the 10 Year Anniversary planning committee.

SWSD Chapter Provides Leadership to the Region:

Madeline Jones: Regional Teen Foundation Chair

Sonji Cosby: Regional Editor

Pamela McCurley: Regional Associates Chair

The SWSD Chapter is blessed to have a group of families that provide support to each other and to others beyond their immediate circle. During the end- of- the- year celebration of Conference Achievements, chaired by Barbara Washington and Denise Wall, the kids (and some adults) skated at The Skateland and shared in a cheer of the wins from Teen Conference such as 1st place in Making the Band and Dramatic Monologue (by Ashley Lofton), to name a few. Zakiya Wall won Children Cluster 1st Place Persuasive Speech and SWSD reclaimed our 1st Place Chapter Poster Board Title as well! The event was also a chance to send off the graduating teens: Channel Miller, Wesley Green, Brie Stokes Kandice Weathersppn, and Kamron Jones. LTS Hale had a special presentation for the graduates as well. President Wall had a special production acknowledging the Regional Teen Foundation Chair, Madeline Jones, our first elected teen officer. Madeline extends her thanks to her fellow teen chapter members for their support during her campaign.

Sonji Cosby, serves at the Regional Editor providing guidance to chapter editors and serving in various capacities assisting the National Editor. Pam McCurley serves as Regional Associate Chair. Her remarks during Area Work Day were spicy and insightful.

STEP OUT|WALK TO STOP DIABETES JNJ COE EVENT

It was no secret that the SWSD crew believes in service. This year was the second year of participation in the American Diabetes Association event at the Ball Park in Arlington. SWSD assisted in the assembly and distribution of items for the Cure Diabetes campaign. We also came to beat records in the 5K Run/ Walk event. The Teens came in impressive numbers with the SWSD chapter team to provide community service with other COE chapters. Thanks to Toni Holloway for her coordination efforts. It was clear who were the athletes in the bunch. John Paul Jones, Teen Vice President, came in 5th. Danesha Bethune and Kindralyn would have won most fit and pumped up while Pam McCurley finished with future Jiller in a stroller.

Featured Activities We were taught it is not nice to brag; however, when it comes to SWSD Programming, we can’t help ourselves. The chapter moms have planned an amazing year of activities. The S-T-E-A-M has been embraced and making a positive impact which is evident from the feedback of the children and the community. We have highlighted a few activities held this J&J Season. Our chapter has learned about battling bullying, learning about Japanese culture, conserving energy, healthy living and diet through a bootcamp, being Mad Scientists, appreciating art through dramatic theatre, legislation, getting the vote out and much more. Please use your handy Chapter CDs for programming schedules. MAD SCIENTISTS- bloomers and inquisitive minds “We chose “The Lab” because it offered an exceptional educational science experience through projects designed to entertain and enlighten the children. They participated in a social and entertaining mix of demonstrations, hands on experiments and auditory stimulation, to include slime, putty and snow to name a few. “ The children donated canned goods to the Friendship West VIP Ministry and ere encouraged to bring used cooking oil in support of the "Cease the Grease" Campaign so it can be recycled into biodiesel and used to power Dallas County school buses and Fire Department Trucks. In addition, they were encouraged to be attentive at home and encourage the chefs at home to not pour cooking oil or grease down the drain. Hosts: Natasha Harris and Shoncie Whittaker
