Reflection on Our Cover By naming Christ the “king” we acknowledge him and his way of living as the wellspring of our goodness and salvation. We acknowledge our status as his “subjects” called to relate to others as he did. We acknowledge our shared inheritance as those who re-ceive life through him. By naming Christ our King we identify him as the One who offers us the fullness of life in his kingdom both now and forever. This painting of Christ the King is by Hans Memling, 1435-1494, German-Flemish

Today, we take up a Collection that helps fight pov-erty at its roots. For 40 years, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) has provided funding for groups that make lasting change and lift up the poor in the United States. The Collec-tion has helped secure funding for low-income day care cen-ters, legal advocacy to enforce fair wages, programs that em-phasize education, and afford-able housing in low-income neighborhoods.

From Our PastorFrom Our Pastor

Dear Friends, Family Feast: Another Thanksgiving has al-most arrived. This is a heartwarming family celebration which means a great deal to every-one. That is why millions travel crisscrossing the nation to be with those they love and care for. Thanks be to God: We give thanks, of course, to God for blessings innumerable, big and small. We often take them for granted. Thanksgiving Day is a special occasion when we make explicit the awareness of God’s blessings and lift up our hearts in deep grati-tude. Thanks be to others: God’s gifts descend on us most of the time through one another. God uses us all as instruments of His blessings. Hence in a sense, we are all living sacraments of God’s presence and love to one another. That is why we have need to thank each other for kindness shown, for love shared, for com-passion displayed, for gentleness revealed, for forgiveness offered, for patience practiced---and for just being there when we need them. Let’s remember always that words are good for thanksgiving, but deeds of gratitude are better. We need to live in a manner worthy of the blessings we have received from God and others.

First Thanksgiving---Living through con-flicts: An important aspect of the First Thanksgiving celebrated in the wake of the harvest was that people of different cultures could sit together and have a decent conver-sation and share a meal. This is a paradigm worth emulating every-where. In our families, our parish commu-nity, and in the larger world, there are differ-ent worldviews, languages, cultures, and re-ligions. Our views and experiences can bring us into conflict with others, but we cannot disrespect one another. Sometimes, not eve-ryone is in the know of things. We need to learn to give the benefit of the doubt. Every-one should strive to practice the human de-cency of respect for others. Doing Thanks: Let’s “do” thanks to God for our family and friends, for faith and our par-ish community, for life and liberty, for the diversity and unity of the world---the world that God loves so much that He has given us His only Son as our light and life. On behalf of the priests and the staff, I wish to extend to each one of you the blessings of Thanksgiving Day. May this day be filled with memories for you to cherish. Have a Happy Thanksgiving! Your friend and pastor, Father Charles Puthota

Rendering Thanks

Do not let a day slip by without considering God’s fa-vors; praise and exalt his generosity, particularly in contrast with yours, for truly what you deserve is to be deprived of what you already have received. Do not delude yourself about being worthy in any respect, for whatever is meritorious in you is a gift from God. You are nothing but matter stripped of all good, and anything you might have is clothing God lends you because he wishes you to have it. Faithfully remember the gifts bestowed by nature as well as those you enjoy by chance and grace and by the promised glory that, unless you happen to lose it through your own fault, is as certain as the rest. Think intently about the special and general graces from the Lord and admit truthfully that you received them from his hand. Pre-serve them assiduously in the greatest possible purity and love them dearly, but even more, love him who so blessed you. Withdraw and guard against offending grace and the Lord of grace… Father Francisco de Osuna (1540) Seville region of Spain.

Holiday Help for Those Grieving

Holidays are times we look forward to being with family and friends. They hold many memories for us. This is a reality

that hurts as we miss absent loved ones who have died.

Handling the holiday is not deciding how to eliminate the pain of missing these people, but rather learning how best to live

with the hurt without being consumed by it.

The following workshop is available to help:

• acknowledge the difficulty of the season as one who is grieving

• gain some new tools and insights for working your way through the holidays

• join with others for support and connection
