Adoration

in Old St. Mary’s!

Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament awaits your visit! We are seeking an adorer for Wednesday, at 10:00am. If you would like to try this or another weekly hour, please contact Ivy Monahon at 803.649.4157 or [email protected]

There are so many benefits of a weekly holy hour in the Presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament: Peace in your heart, quiet prayer time, better family and social relationships, knowing God deeper as you walk in His friendship. Jesus awaits your visit!

Please remember to use Covid-19 precautions for your safety and the safety of others.

Observe silence at all times. Adoration fosters personal intimacy with Our Lord – please allow others this special time with Jesus.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Our annual Church-wide retreat has arrived! All the Baptized around the world enter into the cleansing desert of Lent this Ash Wednesday, February 17. Mass times with distribution of ashes: 6:30am, 8:20am (school), 12pm-noon, 5:30pm (livestream), and 7pm in Spanish. A slight modification this year: In order to limit speaking within a close distance, the priest at Mass will say the penitential phrase only once out loud for everyone just before the distribution of ashes. Ashes will then be imposed on the forehead in silence. Recall that ashes are not a sacrament, so if you are uncomfortable receiving them, there is no obligation to do so. God sees our repentance without ashes.

Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat (ages 14 onward); and Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are also days of fasting (ages 18-59, unless one has a medical condition that would prevent fasting).

To help us all focus on what’s most important this Lent, a very generous donor is providing for us a free, highly engaging book: Rediscover Jesus: An Invitation, by popular author Matthew Kelly. Some insights from Kelly: “When we set out to explore the difference between highly engaged Catholics and disengaged Catholics, we discovered that the central difference was that highly engaged Catholics have a daily routine of prayer. If we don’t teach people how to pray, nothing will change…. Rediscover Jesus is about taking a fresh look at the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, taking an inventory of our lives side by side with the Gospel, and embracing the challenge to grow.” Pick up your copy, and take an extra one or three to give to friends.

Update regarding the virus: Studies about the virus’ behavior and transmission continue to give us more helpful information. We at St. Mary’s continue to strive to provide the highest level of protection for those attending Mass in-person. It has been proven that the virus is transmitted almost exclusively through aerosol particles. In other words, surfaces do not seem to be the problem. In a December 28, 2020, article (“Still Disinfecting Surfaces? It Might Not Be Worth It”), NPR reports that having studied the virus now in real-life conditions, the risk of getting infected from touching a surface contaminated by the virus is very low. “In hospitals, surfaces have been tested near COVID-19 patients, and no infectious virus can be identified,” says Emanuel Goldman, a microbiologist at Rutgers University. Of course, we remain vigilant about transmission through the air, so masks are still a must inside all parish buildings.

In addition to wearing our face covering over our nose and mouth, we should all continue to wash our hands well and use hand sanitizer. Priests, Deacons, and EMs will continue sanitizing our hands before distribution of Holy Communion.

Imploring the protection of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph upon our parish family,

Father Wilson

This Week’s Scripture Readings

Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Grades 4K—5

Mrs. Mary Ellen Jackson [email protected];Telephone: 803.642.2676

Dear Parents of K – 5th graders: 1. February challenge: The Church dedicates each month to a specific devotion. February is devoted to The Holy Family. Consider inviting our parish Holy Family to your home for a week (contact Mary Ellen Jackson). This week, pray as a family the prayers that the Holy Family would have used —The Psalms. Each day let your children choose a psalm to pray together as part of your before-meal prayers. Perhaps you could decide on one to memorize as a family as a Lenten activity. 2. Lent starts this Wednesday, February 17th. Plan to attend Mass — 6:30am, 8:20am, 12:00n, 5:30pm, 7:00pm Spanish. 3. Looking Ahead: Totus Tuus week is July 26-30. Save the dates! More information will be in the bulletin closer to this exciting catechetical program for grades 1–6. Older (7th grade– adults) volunteers are needed as well. 4. Continue working on your CCD/Catechism books

First Holy Communion families: Work through the First Communion Catechism with your children. It has simple explanations and fun pictures. Practice going to confession every day, and practice reading/reciting the Act of Contrition every day. Important Dates: Church Tour - February 27; First Confession - March 6

Grados Kinder a 5º

Sra. 2. La Cuaresma comienza este miércoles, 17 de febrero. Planee asistir a misa. Horario: 6:30am, 8:20am, 12:00n, 5:30pm, 7:00pm Español. 3.

2020 — the Year of St. Joseph Get to know St. Joseph!

Pope Benedict wrote: St. Joseph’s silence “is a silence permeated by contemplation of the mystery of God, in an attitude of total availability to his divine wishes. In other words, the silence of St Joseph was not the sign of an inner void, but on the contrary, of the fullness of faith he carried in his heart, and which guided each and every one of his thoughts and actions. … Let us allow ourselves to be ‘infected’ by the silence of St Joseph! We have much need of it in a world which is often too noisy, which does not encourage reflection and listening to the voice of God." To think about: “Infected by silence” – what an interesting phrase. How can we cultivate silence in our lives which will allow us to contemplate the mystery of God and to be open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit?
