Donors of Distinction

Sisters Network Connects with DonorsThe Sisters Development Network (SDN) assists the Office of Development in furthering the relationships of our monthly and legacy benefactors. Legacy benefactors are those who have included the BVMs in their estate plans. The sisters add a personal touch by sending cards and letters, making phone calls, and keeping our benefactors informed about all that is happening at Mount Carmel.

“We love our BVM sisters!” Ask any benefactor of the Sisters of Charity, BVM why they support the sisters and their mission and you’ll likely hear this refrain.

BVM sisters were there during many of our donors’ formative years, teaching them discipline, self-respect and the core values that shaped them into caring, involved adults. There’s not much benefactors won’t do for their beloved sisters!

The Sisters Development Network (SDN) assists the BVM Office of Development in strengthening the relation-ships with our monthly and legacy benefactors. Founded in 1987 with an original com-mittee of 11 BVM sisters, the SDN has grown in number to the current group of 16 sisters. They inform donors of congregational needs and thank them for their gener-ous support. Over the past 30 years, 65 sisters have served on the SDN.

These sisters ensure that our donors know just how important they, their fami-lies, and their lives are to the BVMs, providing the personal connection that means so much.

BVM Shares Rewards of SDN Ministry

Longtime SDN member Marie Greaney, BVM (David Therese) was a full-time direc-tor of pastoral care at Palos Community Hospital in Palos Heights, Ill., when she was invited to join the group.

“I was honored to be asked to do the wonderful work of development,” she says. “Sending cards and thank you notes and making phone calls were my primary concerns.”

With her full-time min-istry, it was challenging at times to contact everyone she wanted to. She remembers them on birthdays and holi-days, visits them in the hospi-tal, and tries to attend funerals whenever possible.

For Marie, these relation-ships resemble a family bond. “I hear about celebrations, new grandchildren, weddings, anniversaries, special trips, requests for prayers, and sad times in their lives like illness or the death of a loved one. They are especially grateful knowing that they are prayed for daily.”

Marie notes that it’s par-ticularly satisfying for donors to hear how their support is used, like the hearing loops installed in the Mount Carmel chapels, new chairs for the sisters, and sharing with those suffering from natural disas-

Our annual Great Give Day on May 23, 2016, was once again a success! Our friends helped to raise $23,522 to preserve oak trees on the Mount Carmel campus. Over a dozen trees were treated for oak wilt disease and three trees were removed as part of this project. The sisters continue to be blessed by the beauty God has provided them around their home.

Enjoying their daily stroll around Mount Carmel are BVMs Marilyn Thomas (l.) and Laurene Brady.

ters. “They are always inter-ested in knowing what has been going on in the com-munity, especially at Mount Carmel,” she adds.

One of Marie’s donor contacts provided some illu-minating insight. “We have known each other for many years so our friendship con-tinues to grow with love and concern,” Marie explains. In the past year this friend shared with Marie the sad news of her macular degeneration, and with it, her loss of inde-pendence, ability to drive, and especially, her ability to read—one of her great joys.

Marie’s friend says, “The calls Marie makes to me are so appreciated. I am unable to read all the requests for money that I receive, so I

throw most of them away. When Marie calls, she is interested in what I am doing and how my family is. I enjoy hearing her news of the BVM community. She doesn’t ask for anything in return.” Marie has also introduced her friend to audio books and regularly recommends good ones to listen to.

Another of Marie’s con-tacts, Rae Paul, shares: “I have been fortunate and have benefited from a BVM education from kindergar-ten through college, have made and kept many BVM relationships throughout the years, and I now have the comforting, kind and caring relationship with another BVM through the develop-ment office.”

Connections Foster Relationships

Alice Marie Dunphy, BVM (St. Gerard) is a “new-bie”—volunteering on the SDN since 2015. But Alice is definitely not new to the concept of development and fundraising! Even now, she is still conducting “business” from her cozy room on the second floor of the Caritas building at Mount Carmel in Dubuque, Iowa.

Back in 1977, Alice arrived in Palm Springs, Calif., as principal of St. Theresa School. And before she left that ministry 20 years later, she had coordinated the fundraising and completion of a new gymnasium, parish cen-ter and rectory, and finally, a $3.5 million dollar “school for

the future” which today pro-vides a quality Catholic edu-cation to preschool through eighth grade children.

Believing that parents need to be involved in their children’s school, sharing both their time and finan-cial support, Alice tirelessly tapped into the resources of parents’ skills and pocket-books to fulfill the dream of a new school.

She rubbed elbows with the likes of Bob and Dolores Hope and Frank Sinatra, organizing and collaborat-ing the immense project and fundraising with deter-mination, Irish charm, and perseverance. “I made many friends, both personal and professional,” says Alice, “and those friendships remain dear to me. They all shared in my vision for a new school, working to make it happen.” By 1993 her dream was a reality.

This tiny powerhouse knows the value of relation-ships and bonding, which, she says, “is more important than money.” Alice was excited to reconnect recently with a former set member who is also a donor and friend of BVMs. “It’s crucial to maintain our connection with donors. Sharing infor-mation through cards, letters, visits, phone calls and email links them to the BVM cause and mission. I plant a seed so the relationship may flourish and bear fruit.” About the author: Jody Iler is the communications specialist for the Sisters of Charity, BVM at Mount Carmel in Dubuque, Iowa.

Birdies for Charity™ 2016

The John Deere Birdies for Charity™ program has provided resources for many capital improvements both at Mount Carmel and for congregational projects throughout the country. This year’s funds allowed us to implement the replacement of fluorescent light bulbs with energy effi-cient LED bulbs throughout the campus. The energy sav-ings realized from the LED bulbs will reimburse their cost within two years, and because they are much brighter, provide additional safety for our sisters.

Did You Know? The Motherhouse Chapel has 268 unique light bulbs. The number of bulbs in the Motherhouse totals 780.

Mass for BenefactorsIn October and November, Masses were offered at the Mount Carmel Motherhouse Chapel and at Holy Family Parish in Chicago, respectively. Over 230 of our bene-factors attended these events. At each Mass a candle lighting ceremony was part of the service. Names were read and a candle lit for each of the distinguished giv-ing society members who have passed away in the last year. The sisters look forward to these Masses and enjoy the opportunity to thank their benefactors in person.

At the Mass on Nov. 6, BVMs Marie Greaney (David Therese) (l.) and Rose Mary Meyer (Sebastian) participate in the candle lighting ceremony for deceased donors at Holy Family Parish in Chicago.
