Provincial Advocate for Children and Youth visits Sioux Lookout

Geoff ShieldsstAff Writer

ThE nishnawabe-gamik Friendship centre was the

setting March 19 for a luncheon held for irwin Elman, provincial advocate for children and Youth.

Representatives of 28 community service and school groups that included nodin, Firefly, Sioux Mountain public School, Queen Elizabeth District high School, Sioux lookout First nations health authority, and Out Of

The cold met over an informal lunch to meet with him, network ideas, and discuss strategies.

Elman was in town at the invitation of Jack Martin from creighton Youth Services who is a member of the FaSD (Fetal alcohol Spectrum

Disorders) Regional network Steering committee. The event was hosted by Sherry baum of community living Dryden / Sioux lookout.

To open the luncheon, a microphone was passed around and everyone introduced themselves by name and organization. baum then introduced Everett konrad, the son of Rhonda konrad, who represented kenora / Rainy River Districts child and Family Services.

konrad described how, during a time of personal problems in his youth, Elman had provided assistance that helped him to overcome his difficulties.

Elman was then introduced by baum.

baum commented

afterward, “i am very pleased with the turnout. We just wanted to welcome irwin and he told us he is here to learn and we thought that we would introduce him to a variety of community partners in Sioux lookout. he comes here often, but this is the first time he has had a chance to meet anyone from the organizations here.”

brenda Whatley is the healthy generations Facilitator at community living. She shared, “it’s good to see how people from the different organizations are working together. I find it interesting to walk alongside children and youth we are working with.”

konrad spoke about her son and the event. “i thought the turnout was really good and a cross representation of our community. i thought that Everett’s talk showed a lot of bravery and courage.”

a FaSD video conference was scheduled in the afternoon at the community living centre. it was chaired by baum and presented via webcam to organizations that included Thunder bay caMh, Red lake Firefly, Fort Francis Firefly, Kenora LWHD, Sioux Lookout Firefly and representatives from keewatin-patricia District School board.

items on the agenda included reports from the conference attendees with Fort Francis Firefly receiving a special recognition for the work they are doing. The

report was followed by Elman who spoke about Feathers of hope and the need to elevate the voice of children and youth. The meeting concluded at 3 o’clock.

Elman explained how he came to be in Sioux lookout. “i have only been to Sioux lookout on my way to various communities and i thought it would be nice to come out and see different people like the elementary school. We need to find a way to do something with what we have. What it is about is making sure that young people have a voice.”

Speaking of the conference, he shared, “i thought it was great. it is something that is unique in the province. One of the things i hear from government is there is no money to do anything with. if that is true, then they need to get out of the way of the people they have already funded and allow the cross sector to do what they need to do to bet ter support our social system.”

another video conference is planned for September. “i have heard about this meeting, so i will offer to be involved,” Elman said.

The town of Sioux lookout has impressed him. “i love it! i say i’m coming and all of a sudden i have an offer of a luncheon. There is a great sense of community here that doesn’t exist anywhere else.”

Irwin Elman and Sherry Baum opened the luncheon.Bulletin Photo/Geoff Shields

Walk a Mile film project debut in Sioux LookoutGeoff ShieldsstAff Writer

ThE centennial centre was the location

of the screening of a controversial film relating to the history of First nations people in canada entitled Walk a Mile on the evening of Friday, March 21 as part of Sioux lookout’s Racism awareness Week activities.

The project is the result of a collaboration between filmmaker Michelle Derosier and Thunder bay city clerk John hannam. it was filmed in Thunder Bay and is divided into four short documentaries that deal with the topics First contact, Residential School System, Missing aboriginal Women, and hopes for The Future,

interspersed with interviews from both native and non-native people.

Derosier spoke of the project initiation. “John and i had a discussion about the idea of doing a series over a year ago and after going into production it took six months to film. all those interviewed are living in Thunder bay and initially we talked to 40 people, interviewed 30, and ended up with 17 in the actual series.”

hannam added, “initially it was a joint idea between Michelle and myself. i manage Thunder bay aboriginal liaison and we recognized that we needed a tool in our work, both inside the corporation and in the

community, that would help introduce the aboriginal community, the issues that confronted them, and act as a starting point for conversation to grow and strengthen the understanding between First nation and non- First nation people. The first screening was in Thunder bay last month so tonight’s is our first showing outside the city,” he said.

The evening started with Master of ceremonies councillor Joyce Timpson welcoming the 29 people who attended, including Mayor Dennis leney and lac Seul chief clifford bull.

She then introduced the two guest speakers.

Following this bull extended greetings and

a welcome on behalf of lac Seul, which was followed by a reading of Sioux lookout’s Racism awareness Week proclamation by leney.

Short introductory presentations were made by hannam and Derosier after which the film was screened.

at the end of the evening members of the audience were invited to ask questions.

gifts on behalf of SlaRc were presented to Derosier, hannam, bull, leney and Timpson by organization members Terry-lynne Jewell and Tanya kakekaspan, in appreciation of their contributions to the event.

afterward bull spoke of how the film had affected him. “i thoroughly enjoyed the evening and i am glad i came. i just want to commend Michelle and John and the production team for a fabulous, thought provoking, at times gut wrenching, film. It certainly brought back memories of parts of my childhood when i was in residential school.”

he added, “i think this film should be used as a tool and given to all schools right across canada, so people can learn about the history of the First nation people in canada.”

leney shared, “i think they made it very well, an interesting

film, very well done and very informative and it has to be distributed to all ages of youth.”

hannam spoke about the evening.“i was very pleased with the people turnout and the response from Sioux lookout.”

Derosier thought, “it was really great. i am really happy to be here. i have family in Eagle lake, Wabigoon First nation, Dryden and Sioux lookout areas and i am always really happy when i get an opportunity to come and show some of my work here, so I know first hand that there is work to be done here and i am happy to come and share what i do.”

Bboyizm forges a new frontier for urban

street danceOne of canada’s top

street dancers, Yvon Soglo a.k.a. b-boy crazy Smooth, the founder and artistic director of bboyizm, is dedicated to carrying on the street dance culture and introducing it to the world of performing arts.

his new piece, Music creates Opportunity, will astound the audience at the Sioux hudson Entertainment Series’ final performance on Saturday april 5.

please join us at the Queen Elizabeth District high School at 7:30 pm to see a show that takes street dance to a whole new level!! Single tickets are

available at the door and children and high school students pay only $5. For more information call 737-2174 or 737-1677.

bboyizm was founded by crazy Smooth in 2004 with the vision of promoting and preserving the foundation, authenticity and true essence of all street dances. Drawing on his technical background in rocking and b-boying, crazy Smooth created iZM in 2010 as an exploration into the very nature of artistic expression.

Music creates

Opportunity features traditional street dances including rockin’, b-boying, house dancing and pantsula, a street dance from Soweto, South africa. bboyizm will deliver precise and mastered technique; explosive movement; synchronicity and individualism together; and a festive and communicative spirit of movement, music, and life.

in preparation for this new piece Smooth has been working on partnering and contact improvisation awakened a curiosity: street dancers

express themselves in relationship to the music, whereas in contact improvisation contemporary dancers express themselves through a relationship with other moving bodies. The contrast between these two styles will be the essence of the new creation and introduce rhythmic contact into the vocabulary of street dance.

Rainbows and sundogsapril opens the door

that separates winter here from the emerging warm season. We’ll soon be saying “so long for now” to the dogs of winter and “hello” to our warm, colorful arches.

i don’t remember seeing a sundog this low to the horizon. i took these pictures from my deck about 9 o’clock one morning last December. The temperature at the time was -27c, having risen a few degrees from the overnight low of -31c.

an Ojibway friend, when he saw my picture, said, “gibete’o kiisis. Means the sun is covering his ears and it’s gonna be cold.”

The following is taken from “Weather notebook” which i

found (along with many additional explanations) by googling sundog.

Sundogs are something you may have never even heard of, let alone actually seen. They look like tiny section of rainbows which, on the other hand, are seen often, if not in real life then at least in pictures and paintings. The irony of this is that sundogs are more common than rainbows because they can occur any time of year, whereas rainbows are limited pretty much to the warmer seasons. The scientific difference is that rainbows are formed by sunlight striking liquid raindrops and sundogs come from sunlight striking clouds made of ice crystals which form in winter and in summer way up in the

atmosphere.When visible,

sundogs are always seen horizontally just to the right or left of the sun. They look like a shiny, iridescent patch of cloud, about the size of the sun. in fact they’re sometimes called mock suns because the real sun may be hidden behind a cloud. When sunlight, which is made

up of all the colors of the spectrum, hits the ice crystals in the cloud, it bends a little. The ice crystal acts as a prism, separating the sunlight into different colors and forming a sundog. Rainbows are basically the same type of thing, except that in rainbows it is raindrops that serve as prisms instead of ice crystals.

another difference between the two, rainbows are seen as you face away from the sun as opposed to sundogs that are seen only when facing toward the sun. and probably the biggest difference between the two is that a rainbow usually signals an end to the rain, while a sundog often means that rain, or snow is on the way.

Continued from fronthand and showed our class an old picture of some councilors and a chief in the middle. he also brought in a medal that got handed down to him from another chief which had been given in 1874. he had a pipe that was given to him as a gift and a turtle shell rattle that was made by an Elder.

“i got to wear a head dress that the chief often wears on special occasions and we took a picture. Then after

talking to my class, he brought me to his office and gave me a book. We then went for lunch at East End in hudson. When we were done we went to a meeting at the Band Office which was really interesting.”

She added, “after the meeting, he gave me another bag filled with lots of cool stuff. My favorite parts of the day were going to the meeting, having lunch with chief and council, seeing old pictures and holding the Treaty

Medal. i learned that the chief has very important meetings to attend and that it is not an easy job. Our chief looks after three communities and often has to travel to help our people. i was very proud to be chief for the Day and my family was really proud too. When i get older, i would be proud to be chief of lac Seul so that i can help the people of our community.”

chief clifford bull commented, “i was approached by the grade 5 teacher Mr. korobanik with the idea of why not hold a chief for a Day event. So the

students were asked to do an essay to suggest what they would do

if they were given the opportunity to be chief. The winner was then chosen and she was my chief for the Day and accompanied me to my meetings on that particular day. as well we also had lunch with the council and to me holding this event instills leadership qualities in

young people at a very early age regardless of gender. This was a wonderful opportunity and it cemented our growing pride in our leadership, our people and our culture. i encourage all other First nation bands to do the same thing in their communities.”

that they undertake an asset management plan. at that time she cautioned councillors that when the plan was done they would be shocked at what the cost would be to replace all of the municipal infrastructure.

She emphasized the plan isn’t about replacing everything all at once, but rather is a roadmap council can use to determine the best places to spend municipal dollars.

Treasurer henry Wall agreed, stating, “We’re going to do a little bit every year and in 15 years we hope to be in a place where we are self-sustaining with funding from both levels of government.”

he described what having an asset management plan in place means. “When funding becomes available we can say this is what we need done and this is how much we need.”

Mitchell said the intent is for the document to be a living document which will be continually upgraded as new assets are obtained and older assets are sold or go out of service.

Mitchell said municipalities across Ontario and across canada are in the

same boat as Sioux lookout. “unfortunately, infrastructure replacement hasn’t been looked at as closely in the past by municipalities as it is now and a lot of infrastructure in communities is around 40 years old.”

creating the municipality asset Management plan was a two year job.

Sioux lookout Mayor Dennis leney stressed, “We’re already in good shape financially. We have reserves for sewer and water, the airport, replacing our vehicles. if we hadn’t started putting money into reserves we wouldn’t have been able to buy our new fire truck which is coming soon.”

he added, “With our treasurer, he’s got us heading in the right direction. We’ve got a plan. We’re making it work and he’s making it work for us.”

leney said the asset Management plan will become another useful tool in the municipal toolbox council can reach for when needed.

During the last funding round, when $100 million for infrastructure funding was announced by the province and Sioux lookout applied, leney said things didn’t go so well for Sioux lookout. “We’re way ahead of the

game and doing a great job and we get penalized for it,” he said.

Mitchell agreed with leney. “We were frustrated with the last round of provincial infrastructure funding. What our concern was, and we spoke to the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Municipal affairs and housing on this, was how are they gauging the asset Management plans. Everybody’s asset Management plan is going to be a little bit different.

“how do they say if our infrastructure is failing worse than someone else’s?

“One of the biggest concerns i had with them, and i used the word punishing which they corrected me on, they are looking at these applications for this infrastructure funding and they are saying you are not in critical enough need, which is a concern, but they’re

also saying you’re too well off financially, so because in their eyes the municipality isn’t carrying enough debt one of our concerns is, is the province then stating they want us to carry the debt from the infrastructure? We felt because we are very fiscally responsible, have a low debt threshold, and we’re doing all the right things, the province wants us to do such things as putting our money

into reserves and we’ve done all those things and they’re still not going to give us the money. That’s frustrating.”

The asset Management plan will be made available to the public on the municipality website siouxlookout.ca.

Fined for unlawfully hunting wolf and abandoning pelt

Two southern Ontario men have pleaded guilty and were fined for illegal wolf hunting offences.

Wayne Stewart of Winchester and arden carruthers of Morewood were each fined $700 for wolf hunting without a licence and $200 for abandoning the pelt of a

furbearing mammal.The court heard

that on november 22 a Ministry of natural Resources conservation officer investigated a complaint that a wolf had been illegally shot and abandoned at a hunt camp.

The officer contacted Stewart and carruthers near their hunt camp. The men were later contacted by officers upon returning home,

where they admitted to illegally shooting and abandoning a wolf at the hunt camp.

To hunt wolves or coyotes in specified Wildlife Management units, a resident must have a wolf/coyote game seal, an Outdoors card and a small game licence tag. Regulations prohibiting the abandonment or spoilage of furbearing mammal pelts that hold commercial value are in place to protect this resource.

$2000 in fines for illegal moose hunt

a kenora resident has pleaded guilty to charges related to illegal moose hunting.

William carson was fined $1000 for hunting moose without a licence and $1000 for making a false or misleading statement to a Ministry of natural Resources conservation officer.

court heard that on October 13 officers contacted carson at a fly-in outpost cabin on a remote lake where he was planning to hunt moose.

carson told the officers he forgot to bring his moose hunting licence and calf seal to the outpost. The officers, upon returning to kenora, determined carson did not have a licence. carson later admitted to lying about the licence and said that he went moose hunting after the officers left for kenora.

Contractor fined $5000 for illegal construction

a kenora contractor has pleaded guilty to illegally building a garage on cottage property.

Michael klassen was fined $5000 for erecting the structure in a restricted area without a work permit, contrary to the public lands act.

court heard that on March 13 a Ministry of natural Resources technician inspected the property. The area is restricted under the act to maintain water quality and protect the lake trout population. This requires all construction work, including improvements, to be authorized by a permit.

klassen was also convicted on april 2 for building a cottage without a permit at the same location.

The public lands act provides for measures to create restricted areas. Within a restricted area, permits are required to build or renovate buildings and structures on public and private land. The ministry may establish a restricted area order to ensure that development does not threaten significant resources, such as natural heritage values, fisheries or wetlands.

Thunder Bay man fined $1875 for illegal

hunting activitiesa Thunder bay man

has pleaded guilty to hunting-related charges.

Jason Mccart was fined $625 for hunting a furbearing mammal without a licence and $1250 for making a false or misleading statement to a Ministry of natural Resources conservation officer.

The court heard that on november 16 a conservation officer and an Ontario provincial Police officer contacted Mccart, who was parked in his truck beside a commercial gravel pit.

Mccart, dressed in camouflage clothing, told the officers he was working and did not have a gun in the vehicle. upon inspection, the officer discovered three high-powered rifles and ammunition in his truck. Mccart explained he was going target shooting on private property, but did not have any targets with him and could not identify the property’s location. Mccart also told the officers his deer and coyote hunting licences were at his workplace nearby; however, officers learned Mccart did not have any licences.

Two hunters nabbed in licence scam

Certificates awarded to SHS students and volunteer

Geoff Shields stAff Writer

ThE northwest catholic District School board has

six catholic elementary schools serving the communities of Sioux lookout, Dryden, atikokan, Fort Frances to Rainy River and First nations within the jurisdiction of the board in northwestern Ontario. Each year Recognitions of Excellence Certificates are awarded to deserving students, volunteers and staff based on recommendations by the school principals and boards under their supervision.

principal of Sacred heart School, Susan Maclellan, spoke about the students and one volunteer she commended. “From February 10 to 14, three students from our school were selected as part of 90 candidates that

attended an aboriginal leadership camp in parry Sound, Ontario. Those selected were katie gervasi, autumn Mckay and Eric Dickson and i commended them for attending the camp and representing our school and school board. They came back enriched, inspired and ready to go for their dreams.

“at the camp, they learned more about the many traditions in First nation culture, also about the clan system, smudging, drumming and the bundles that we all carry with us.

“While in attendance they made necklaces with colored letter beads that spelled gREaT, g for goal setting, R for responsibility and respect, E for environment, a for attitude and T for teamwork. it was stressed that we all belong. Their bundles have definitely

been enriched and they look forward to seeing how, as leaders, they can make a difference for others.”

Maclellan also commended Maureen Rogers, a librarian at Sioux lookout public library, who has volunteered her time and talents helping the staff and students at ShS for 19 years.

“Over the years she has been a regular guest at our literacy nights and she has visited many classes, often dressed in storybook costume to read to children. Over and above this role, she has counted and rolled coins for our school. She cheerfully works with various partners to roll the milk money. it’s people like Maureen who shape our community and are instrumental in making it better.”

katie gervasi commented on her

certificate, “I felt special and like i had accomplished something and did something special for my school. The camp was fun and i learned a lot of good things. it also taught me that i can do anything i want to do and to think positive, not negative, thoughts. Don’t let things get in the way and you can do anything you want to do if you believe you can.”

Eric Dickson described his

achievement, “it made me proud of myself. They taught us to never give up and to always believe in yourself.”

Maclellan concluded, “i am proud that these young leaders plan on bringing together other classes with the message that anyone can go for their dreams by hard work, respect, building relationships, and by being able to adapt. They heard messages about the importance of perseverance and they truly believe that

together we are better and i’m looking forward to seeing the difference they can make for others,” she said.

Rogers shared, “it was nice to be chosen. i was quite surprised as i have been a volunteer at the school for a number of years. it was an honor and i appreciate the school for nominating me.”

She added, “hopefully more parents will step in and take a role in volunteering at the school.”

The play is divided

into six inter-related vignettes with the characters being totally unaware of the fact that they are connected in some way.

consisting of The

and over the time frame of an hour we follow the hilarious and seemingly unrelated stories of six office dwellers.

The sketches include a veteran television reporter desperately trying to hold onto his job who becomes a victim of a case of mistaken identity.

Second in the sketches, The pitch sees two canadian movie producers wooing a hollywood director who has seen better days but who attempts to sell them on his concept for a new movie to be called Trevor, lord of the apes which bears an uncanny resemblance to a previously released film that relates to the story about Tarzan of the apes.

There is also an entertainment lawyer and this segment shows how his surprised parents react when he announces to them that he is gay. his mother, in particular,

is appalled to find out she has a dominating personality.

The last act follows a stressed-out psychiatrist trying to deal with a client threatening to jump from the window ledge of her office while at the same time attempting to placate an erratic office supplies salesman who won’t take no for an answer.

The production, which ran from March 27-29, was directed by anita Webster. The 15 cast

members presented a professional production that had the audience constantly amused with its witty dialogue and quick interaction among the actors. The professionally designed set added to the enjoyment of the evening.

The play was presented in two parts with a short intermission separating them. at the conclusion of the night all the players came on stage to take a bow

and were greeted by loud applause.

audience reaction to the performance included Samantha Wood, who commented, “i thought it was a mixture of comedy and natural life that can happen in offices.”

gaby landheer found it to be “very funny, with great acting in Sioux lookout,” while Samantha hill also considered it to be “pretty funny.”

Director anita Webster was happy with the

opening night. “i think it went very well. i am very proud because the actors did a really great

job. i was standing at the back and couldn’t help beaming throughout the performance.”

The Reporter sketch included a surprise ending.

The cast of Office Hours takes a bow.

An actor’s life isn’t all standing up.

Samantha Hill enjoyed the evening.

Aviva Thierry competing for Searchlight stardomTim Brody

AssociAte editor

a Sioux lookout woman is hoping to move

on to the next round in the cbc Searchlight competition.

Dubbed the hunt for canada’s best new artist, people are encouraged to vote online for their favourite artists to send them into the next round of the competition. Voting for this round ends april 6.

people can vote for up to 10 different acts in each region every day.

competing in Ontario, Thunder bay (Voyage north) region, from Sioux lookout Ontario, is 30-year-old laura carbone, who goes by the name aviva Thierry.

born and raised in Sioux lookout, Thierry moved to Toronto in

2007 and circulated in the open mic scene.

She returned home in 2011.

considered legally deaf, Thierry hasn’t let her hearing limitations hold her back playing the drums, 12-string guitar, and piano, in addition to writing and performing her own songs.

The song she has submitted for the competition, Still getting by, was recorded live just a few minutes before the contest deadline and submitted on a dare from a friend.

She states in her Searchlight bio, “i was waiting to finish this song that i started writing last year. all i had was the opening lyrics. i thought i’d have to complicate it

by adding a bunch of different chords, or instruments.”

She adds, “i have only ever had one dream. That was to sing, to perform, to make records, to play and work with other people - that is my biggest love. i also dance, and i’ve been known to be a bit of a comedian onstage. i always forget that it all goes together - you don’t have to decide which things you’re going to be. You can be all of them. That’s the true privilege and blessing of being an artist and getting to share your work with others.”

Thierry is a former member of the Sioux lookout anti-Racism committee and spent her teenage years working with young

people to bring about awareness and change to social issues.

She also states in her Searchlight bio, “Songwriting is such a mystery to me. it’s amazing that buried feelings can intensify to form words that come out of your mouth that you didn’t know you had.”

She continued, “That’s the magic of songwriting. i read somewhere that performing is about perfecting your connection with the audience, whereas recording is about perfecting the art of the song.”

Thierry concluded, “Entering Searchlight is really just about fun,

and daring yourself to do something a little cheeky. it’s about supporting new canadian acts, promoting ourselves, and supporting our friends. Only good things can come from this.”

Thierry is currently working on her debut album.

Fitness Week is opportunity to try new spring classesTim Brody

AssociAte editor

ThE Sioux lookout Recreation centre gave community

members an opportunity to try out some of their new spring classes for free this week.

Marc nielsen, program coordinator, said, “it was a way to try and build awareness and promote

the new fitness classes that are starting. For example, if someone didn’t know what a yoga class was all about or a spin class, this gave them the experience of what that would be like and if they liked it they could register for the program.”

classes showcased during Free Fitness Week from March 21

to 28 were cycle and core, spin and sculpt, express spin, several kinds of yoga, spin class, and an introduction to exercise class.

Spring classes run six, eight or ten weeks, depending on the program.

nielsen said Free Fitness Week went over well with participants.

“it was great. We pretty much filled up every free class that we had, which was awesome.”

Daily prizes were drawn and a grand prize at the end of the week.

anyone who would like to learn more about the spring fitness classes can drop by the rec centre or call 737-1994.

Spin bikes await exercise participants. Bulletin File Photo

It is with great sorrow the family of Glen Douglas

Evans announce his passing on Friday March 21st , 2014 at Concordia Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Glen is survived by his loving wife Angella, his son Nicholas (Senait), daughters Saunni (Conrad), Tiannna (Levi), Sarinna (Mike). Grandaughters Kaley and Sophie, grandsons Nicholas J.R., Marcus, Joshua, Benjamin and Romeo. Sisters Yvonne

Morris (Peter), Gail Evans, Anne Hogan (Aldo), Jean Norman (Bob), and Arlene Evans (Wayne). Brothers Jim, Leo (Irene), Neil and David Evans.

Glen’s Father and Mother, Doug and Irma Evans preceded him in death.

Glen Evans was a long time resident of Sioux Lookout where he graduated from Queen Elizabeth High School and shortly received his millwright certification at

McKenzie Forest Products. He was currently living in Winnipeg, employed as a millwright at Samuel Coil Processing. He loved spending time outdoors and especially enjoyed fishing and hunting with his family and friends. He also loved to tinker with his truck and spend time helping out at home. He was a hard worker, a dedicated family man who appeared to be most content when surrounded by his wonderful family. Glen will be known as a

man who always played with the cards that life gave him with a smile on his face and never complained. Glen Douglas Evans will forever be sadly missed and never forgotten. He will always be remembered as a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Glen Evans Grandchildren Trust Fund currently being set up at the CIBC Sioux Lookout Branch.

In loving memory of Michael Kuzemchuk, age 88 who

passed away peacefully on March 25, 2014. Mike was born in Bereska, Poland on Oct 17, 1925, the first child of five to Michal and Anastasia Kuzemchuk (nee Oleska). Mike spent the first seven years of his life in rural Poland and then immigrated to Canada with his mother and younger sister joining Michal Sr. in Ghost River, Ontario. In 1938 the family moved to Sioux Lookout. In 1961 Mike married the love of his life, Laurette (nee Lamoureux).

They raised their family and they spent the rest of his working and retirement years in Sioux Lookout.

Mike was a lifelong Railroader, like his father, working a variety of different jobs for the C.N.R., but his real joy was carpentry. When he wasn’t out on the road with the railway you could be sure to find him building a garage, doing a renovation or volunteering his time at the church. Mike took great pride in keeping his

own home and yard looking pristine and kept it up well into retirement. It wouldn’t be uncommon to get a phone call about Dad up on a ladder painting or on the roof cleaning his gutters when he was well into his eighties. Mike also believed that it was the simple things in life that brought happiness and one of his biggest joys was sitting on his covered deck on warm summer evenings having endless conversations with his wife. When his health no longer allowed

him to stay at home he moved to Princess Court in Dryden where he shared his unending humour and contagious smile with everyone he encountered.

Mike is survived by his proud sons, Brian (Michelle) and Donald (Leah-Anne) of Dryden. Papa will be sadly missed by grandchildren, Brianne, Kira, Corrin, Jayce (Savannah) and Kale. Mike has one surviving brother, William (Jackie) Kuzemchuk of Penticton, BC. Mike is predeceased by

his sister Mary Gustafson, brothers, Borden Kent and Mervyn Kuzemchuk.

The memorial funeral service was held on Saturday, March 29 at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church at 11:00am with Father Mike Mahoney officiating. The interment of ashes will take place at a later date. If friends so desire, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society or a charity of choice can be made through Sioux Lookout Funeral Home, Box 1449 Sioux Lookout, ON P8T 1B9.
