Winter is done! The Rotary Club of Sioux Lookout “End of Winter” barrel sank through the ice of Pelican Lake on Mother’s Day, May 11, at 3:48 p.m. Official ice-out, when the very last hint of ice disappears, should follow in a few days. The latest recorded ice out on Pelican Lake was May 23, 1966. Firefighters improve ice water rescue skills Tim Brody ASSOCIATE EDITOR T WENTY-ONE members of the Sioux Lookout Volunteer Fire Department had an opportunity to upgrade their ice water rescue skills last week thanks to a new member of the department Tim Wheeler and his wife moved to Sioux Lookout in September. Wheeler teaches technical rescue courses for a company called Raven Rescue. He explained, “As a member of the volunteer fire department and with Raven Rescue I was, in this case, able to offer up my skills and knowledge free of charge. I’m also a part of the Lakehead Search and Rescue Unit. I approached them about using my skills to help out the fire department and they accepted my offer.” He described the two nights of training. “It went well. It was a lot of fun. This training session we really focused on rescuers being on the ice and in the water and how to help people in the water with simple equipment. I taught them improved techniques and helped everyone to be at an operation level to be able to help out. The sessions were about improving the firefighters’ comfort and capabilities so that if they need to go help somebody they have the skills to be comfortable in that environment. It’s a high risk activity with low frequency of calls.” QEDHS fall course to help Aboriginal students develop business skills Tim Brody ASSOCIATE EDITOR Q UEEN Elizabeth District High School (QEDHS) will offer a pilot course this fall aimed at helping Aboriginal students develop business and entrepreneurial skills. The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board (KPDSB) is one of only a few school boards across the province given the opportunity to offer the Aboriginal Youth Entrepreneurship Program (AYEP), which is supported by the Martin Aboriginal Education Initiative and the Ontario Ministry of Education. KPDSB Director of Education Sean Monteith explained that Beaver Brae Secondary School in Kenora and QEDHS will offer the program this fall. “The program is actually built on running courses at the high school level, Grades 11 and 12 courses with a lead teacher who will run the course. The students are to take a course with a business type of curriculum premise and complete 220 classroom hours. There is financial support given, as well as mentoring and direction from not only the teacher but the program coordinator and director,” Monteith said. “The program looks at things like problem solving, creative time management. It looks at critical thinking skills. It looks at successful examples of Canadian Aboriginal business leaders. It looks at the use of digital technological resources and using the services of your local bank or credit union so the students can open and maintain accounts to operate a small business which is what they are going to do. School bus emergency evacuation drill scheduled for May 21Tim Brody

AssociAte editor

SIoUx Lookout residents are being asked to mark May

21 on their calendars and not be alarmed if they see students evacuating school buses that day.

For the second time this school year, in

conjunction with the school bus operators, the northwestern ontario Student Services Consortium will be conducting emergency evacuation drills with the school buses.

Judi Green, General Manager of the Consortium, shared, “we have had very

positive feedback from parents on the first drills which were done in the fall.”

evacuation drills will be taking place in communities across the region on pre-determined days with the Sioux Lookout drill scheduled for May 21.

A press release from

the consortium explains, “The travelling public will see school buses pulled over at safe pre-determined areas off the roadways, before school starts. Drivers will be instructing students on the location of safety equipment and how they are to be used in the case of an

emergency. Drivers will either conduct a full rear door evacuation or simply explain the procedure to their riders. This evacuation drill is similar to a fire drill and helps prepare students in the event of a real emergency.”

Green added, “with the challenges of this

unusual winter, with several minor incidents, students have put into practice what was taught.”

The consortium asks members of the public not to offer assistance on May 21 as the bus drivers have been trained to handle the evacuations.

Exchange students enjoying Sioux Lookout experienceTim Brody

AssociAte editor

ex C H A n G e students Paolo Costi and Pierre-

emmanuel Bataille are enjoying their time at Queen elizabeth District High School while experiencing Sioux Lookout and Canada.

Grade 12 student Costi of Italy is here through the ASSe International Student exchange Program.

He said he was inspired by his brother to go on a student exchange and said it has been an enjoyable experience.

“I chose Canada as the country. I didn’t know where I was going.

“everyone said Canada is a very nice country and the people are very nice,” he said.

He commented on Sioux Lookout, “I like it here. you get to know everyone. I like winter but minus 40 was really cold.”

He also enjoys attending QeDHS. “you can get to know everyone and the teachers are very nice.”

Asked about winter in Italy, Paulo said, “It’s around zero degrees with some snow. Here you have to really dress up to go anywhere.”

Costi said he has made a lot of friends here and enjoyed playing volleyball and basketball for

the warriors.Grade 12 student

Bataille of France is here on a Rotary student exchange.

“I discovered the program and applied in 2013. Canada was my first choice. I had heard about the beautiful landscapes and wildlife,” he shared.

Pierre saw the exchange as an opportunity for personal growth, to experience new places and cultures, and meet new people.

“I hadn’t planned on experiencing minus 40 degree temperatures though,” he added.

“I come from a city with very wet winters. we might get minus 10 but it’s

very rare,” he explained.Asked to make some

comparisons between here and France, he said, “The school is very, very different. Timetables are very different. Teenagers here get more liberty.”

He added, “I’ve made a lot of friends I won’t forget.”

Both students enjoyed experiencing outdoor activities through the school’s outdoor education program. Bulletin Photos/Tim Brody

Believing in themselvesour Kindergarten

class participated in Mental Health week. For Canadian Mental Health Awareness week, we read the book, I CAn believe in Myself by Miriam Laundry. our entire school was given this book to set a Guinness world Record for children reading a book that promotes confidence, happiness, and responsibility in children. The book is meant to empower children and provokes thought about the types of messages we tell ourselves.

In the book, Molly builds a shreddy for her classmates to shred their

I can’t messages.In Kindergarten D,

after reading the book, the students asked if

we had a shreddy and decided to make our own. They wrote down negative messages that they later fed to shreddy. For example, “I can’t climb on the monkey bars” was fed to shreddy. The class said, “yum, yum, yum” as he ate their I can’ts and cheered,

“you CAn!” once the message was gone. you could really see the pride on their faces.

one child spoke in front of the class saying, “I can’t tie my shoes. no, I can’t! But I haven’t tried. But I will.” The message of the book really resonated

with a lot of my kids. It was a great way for the students to visualize a concept so abstract. I feel they are becoming more aware of their negative thinking, which I think is really important.

Ten legs on a spring walk

The first Sunday in May was a great day for a walk - overcast, cool, snowy and brutal for a spring day - but a beauty for a little hike.

I decided to treat Rosie and Boomer to a walk to camp. Through a series of old trails and some dead reckoning through the woods we made the trip in two hours. I judged the distance to be four or five miles.

enroute we passed this cairn erected to honor local outdoorsman George Kendall and the burial ground of

Sioux Lookout influenza victims from 1908 - 1915. Speculation is that the bodies were transported by train to the burial ground a couple miles west of town to isolate the disease from the townspeople of the time.

The cemetery became forgotten and grown over in the wilderness as the seasons marched relentlessly on, until a few years ago when George Kendall, embarked on explorations of his own, chanced upon the little meadow of graves.

Markers, records, names disappeared

long ago. A new cross has been placed at each site, but the stories underneath may never be known. (on the other hand, anyone reading this who has information, should let me know. Please.)

The dogs and I shared a special joy as camp came into sight. It’s the first time we’ve been there since my surgery April 1. Much of the snow has melted. Six Robins were busy scratching up the forest floor. Oscar the Grouse didn’t make his appearance in person,

but he left tracks in the mud. Camp is patiently awaiting spring and summer days ahead. we all shared some daydreams for a couple pleasant hours before beginning the two-hour

return walk.At home, Boomer

and Rosie both immediately chose couch positions and embarked on an evening of sweet dreams. They were pooched.

School site proposalIn regard to the

petition for the proposed location of the new high school, it is nice to see someone else is concerned.

I would request to the powers that be to consider the unused part of the MnR water base as the new location. I understand it is owned

by the provincial government.

This location would give the town a campus style institute of education second to none and a college town reputation.

In addition, that location could offer extramural water-based sports, such as rowing and kayaking, giving attending students an advantage, such as opportunities for scholarships and olympian sports.

Yours truly,Breann Goodfellow

SHS students celebrate Catholic Education Week

Geoff ShieldsstAff Writer

CA T H o L I C education week is an annual

event celebrated in May throughout ontario. This year, the ontario Student Trustees Association ( o S T A - A e C o )

organized the event with the theme Strengthening Students through the Church taking the form of a Mass that was held simultaneously in all Catholic schools throughout the province.

In keeping with this, the students of Sacred Heart School went on a walk for Jesus last wednesday morning. All of the students and staff were involved

in the march, which started at the school and ended at Sacred Heart Church where a Mass was celebrated.

School Principal Susan MacLellan commented,

“our hope is that the students will feel proud of their Catholic education and that it will inspire them to love and serve others through our theme for this year Serving in the Love of Christ.”

Submissions for the paper on May 21 are due Wednesday (Today)

Mother’s Day Market raises funds for gymnastics clubGeoff ShieldsstAff Writer

APPRoxIMATeLy 400 people of all ages

came through the doors of the Recreation Centre gymnasium last Saturday morning for the third annual Mother’s Day Market held to raise money for the Sioux Lookout Gymnastics Club.

A total of 56 tables were manned by vendors from Sioux Lookout, Dryden, Kenora and Savant Lake. Shoppers leisurely perused the variety of goods ranging from jewelry, clothes, photography, hunting equipment, cakes and jam that were on offer.

Bonnie Stewart from Sioux Lookout is a member of the gymnastics committee and was the coordinator of the market. She shared, “It’s our third annual market. we started it as a fundraiser for the gymnastics club and it’s grown in volume every year. we hope that it continues to grow and continues to be successful, so that we can keep going for many years to come.”

Some of the vendors explained why they had come.

Sandi Zinger, “I’m from Dryden and I do all the local shows. This has been a fair turnout,” she said.

nancy McCord from Sioux Lookout was there with her son ethan selling homemade jam. “I’m here to support the gym club, to help them get out in the spring.”

Kelly Sobering from Dryden added, “It’s great. nice to have a market outside of Christmas. we have been coming for three years and the turnout is great and we will continue to support the gymnastics club.”

Shopper Jennifer Hancharuk, looking for birthday gifts, said, “It’s

nice to see the variety of wares on offer.”

Sierra Hartnett came for the baked goods “to see if I could pick up some stuff for my mom for Mother’s Day.”

Scott was pleased with the turnout. “we are very happy. It was a great

turnout and I would like to extend a huge thank you to the vendors who took part, the volunteers, and everyone who came through the door. From the Sioux Lookout gym club we look forward to seeing everyone again next year.”

Continued from fronteach student is given

an opportunity for a $500 student business loan along with their business proposal to operate a small business. The school board provides

the loan to the student and the school board in turn is reimbursed by The Martin Aboriginal education Initiative.

The program is open to about 20 students.

Monteith clarified,

“The course is supported through The Martin Aboriginal education Initiative so it is meant to be focused on supporting Aboriginal students, but there would not be a closure

to non-Aboriginal students. But the course is absolutely designed to support Aboriginal youth in developing some business plans and business acumen.”

Speaking of the school

board being selected to offer the pilot program, Monteith said, “There are very few boards that are involved in this. we were because of the work we’ve done with Aboriginal students and Aboriginal communities, our partners. our board is identified as a board that is doing a lot of tremendous and progressive work in the area of Aboriginal education.”

Commenting on the opportunity the program provides students, he shared, “If we have Aboriginal kids who are graduating with a business experience background and they’ve had a chance to run a successful micro business, then I would say we’ve given them a good footing as they graduate.”

Beth Dasno will be the lead teacher for the program at QeDHS.

A community meeting will be held on the second floor of the Centennial Centre from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. on May 21 for anyone interested in learning more about the program.

Dasno said, “Through this Grade 11 and 12 program, students develop the attitudes, knowledge and skills necessary to achieve success in secondary school, postsecondary education or training, the workplace, and daily life. Students are given entrepreneurial experience and the opportunity for business ownership.

“AyeP uses innovative hands-on activities to improve students’ proficiency in business mathematics, financial literacy, english, accounting, marketing, and information / communications technology, while supporting the acquisition of leadership skills.

“Teaching strategies include classroom instruction, simulations, competitions, conferences, guest speakers, field trips to businesses, and mentors. The program is closely monitored and the success is determined through both quantitative and qualitative measures.

Students learn how to create a product or service-based business. “Funding is provided to enable qualified students to start a micro-business.”

“This program supports our government’s vision that Aboriginal learners deserve access to the training, programs, and opportunities they need to succeed and reach their full potential. This pilot program will help boost their entrepreneurial skills through innovative projects, partnerships, and coaching from business leaders from the Aboriginal community,” said Liz Sandals, Minister of education.

“This innovative program will help Aboriginal students gain the needed entrepreneurial skills to be leaders in both their community and across ontario. By giving Aboriginal students opportunities for today and tomorrow, this program is another example of how our government’s economic plan is working for all ontarians,” said David Zimmer, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs.

“we are very pleased that the Government of ontario is supporting the implementation of the Aboriginal youth entrepreneurship Program in 10 high schools across the province. Aboriginal youth are the fastest growing segment of the population and will be key drivers of the Canadian economy. The Aboriginal youth entrepreneurship Program is dedicated to ensuring that Aboriginal students are empowered with the skills and experience they need to fully participate in our growing economy, to enjoy greater economic self-reliance, and a better quality of life.

“This brings the total number of schools offering the Aboriginal youth entrepreneurship program to 44 across the country,” concluded former Prime Minister Paul Martin, founder of the Martin Aboriginal education Initiative.

Sioux Lookout Fire Chief Rob Favot commented, “The training was excellent. This training session allowed every firefighter to have a dry-suit on. They were able to take part in the whole training exercise. In previous years, we only had four suits here in the fire hall, so four guys would go out and do some training and then they would have to come in and get out of suits and four other guys would then get in them and that’s how we did our training.

“with Tim bringing in eight extra suits for us to practice with, we were able to take all the firefighters and put them in a situation and they had to work together as a team. It

was much better to have guys out there for hours on the ice and in the water and they all had the opportunity to do the training sessions, things like personal rescue, rope rescue. That in itself was great because there was no lull in the training from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. two nights in a row. Thanks to Tim and his training I think it made the guys more comfortable if they have to go out and do a rescue.”

Favot said it was a good time of year to conduct the training.

He concluded, “we’re very fortunate to have a person like Tim who is able to offer this training. It’s going to make our department much better at responding to any incidents on the ice.”

PUBLIC SAFETY NOTICEPRESCRIBED BURNLac Seul Islands Conservation ReserveMay 15, 2014 to November 15, 2014

The Public is urged to stay away from the islands depicted in the adjacent map during this period for their own safety.

The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources will be conducting a Prescribed Burn between May 15, 2014 and November 15, 2014 in the Lac Seul Islands Conservation Reserve.

Prescribed Burns are set by forest managers to improve the health of an ecosystem. The purpose of this Prescribed Burn is to restore the forest on the Lac Seul Islands Conservation Reserve (C2317) to a conifer dominated habitat. The proposed burn area is three islands south of Holden Island and two islands east of Kejick Bay. The burn is fundamental to restoring and maintaining the ecological integrity of this fire-dependent area. As a result, the public is urged to stay away from this area during the Prescribed Burn period for their own safety.

Sioux Lookout body sculptors share their storiesTim Brody

AssociAte editor

Two Sioux Lookout athletes have been

working hard to develop their bodies to the pinnacle of perfection. Joseph Harding, 28, and Allison Moore, 30, both competed in the Manitoba Amateur Bodybuilding Association (MABBA) Provincial Qualifier, which was held at the Pantages Playhouse Theatre in winnipeg.

Harding is a medical device reprocessing technician at the Meno ya win Health Centre and a Certified Personal Trainer through the International Sports Science Association (ISSA).

Moore is currently a provincial constable with the ontario Provincial Police (oPP) and will soon become a detective constable.

Moore and Harding were asked about attending the MABBA competition and their bodybuilding journey.

Is bodybuilding the correct term I should be using?

Moore: There are different divisions in a competition. I competed in figure. Bodybuilding is a separate division. Scoring and posing are very different based on each division.

Harding: Bodybuilding is the correct term. Specifically, I compete in Men’s Physique

bodybuilding.

What first got you interested in bodybuilding?

Moore: I have wanted to compete for many years. I always admired the dedication and determination it took to challenge and push the human body to that extent. I’ve always loved working out but never was able to push myself to that next level. Last year I decided to look into my goal. My husband has been a huge support and last year did some research to find me a trainer. I started working with a trainer out of winnipeg. He would send me my meal and workout programs and I would see him in person once a month. I would also send him weekly pictures.

Harding: The first thing that got me interested in bodybuilding was working out for hockey. After hockey was over I had built a strong passion for the gym. over the years of training I had always been interested in doing a bodybuilding competition but never got around to it. Last May, 2013, I found myself weighing 205 lbs. At this time I knew I had to make a change. After losing 25 lbs I became lost and that’s when it was competition time. I needed something to drive me further on my journey.

How long have you been training?

Moore: I started training last July for the Manitoba Amateur Bodybuilding Association (MABBA) Provincial Qualifier Figure Division.

Harding: I’ve been working out for the past 10 years, but have specifically been bodybuilding and working on my physique for the last year.

Tell me about your exercise, fitness, nutrition routine.

Moore: My workouts started at half an hour of cardio seven days a week and an hour to two

hour weight session six times a week. My diet consisted mainly of lean protein, brown rice, and vegetables. My diet was definitely the toughest part. During the first few months I was allowed one cheat day a week which helped me focus on eating clean. A couple of months before the competition the training and diet became more difficult. I had an hour of morning cardio and an hour of cardio before bed as well as a two to three hour weight session daily. My diet consisted of egg whites and brown rice along with eight litres of fluids.

Harding: I train every day for one and a half to two and a half hours at

the gym which includes usually one hour of weights followed by 40 minutes of intense cardio. That’s not including my home workouts in the evening. My nutrition follows a strict meal plan that I follow day by day to get the results I am looking for.

How difficult or easy has getting to where you are now been? What has been the easiest or best part of the journey? What has been the most difficult, challenging part?

Moore: The most difficult part of my journey was the diet and motivation. As a police officer it was difficult to find the time and energy

to fit my workouts in and find the time to prepare my meals. over the course of most of my training I worked on call and travelled a lot. when I was on a call the days were very long and many of the places I travelled to did not have a gym or grocery store. To try and stay on track, I always had a bag packed with healthy food and exercise bands. even after a 28 to 30 hour day I would try to exercise for at least a few minutes. The easiest part of the journey was the weight sessions, as I loved the gym. I found myself motivated by others at the gym and loved the energy.

Harding: Getting to where I am at, to most

people is considered very difficult. To me it’s been very easy but only because I live for this kind of thing. The most difficult part of bodybuilding is the eating. I have to prepare meals for days and days in advance so that I am ready. But once I had that under control it was like second nature to me. The easiest part, of course, is going to the gym. every morning the alarm goes off at 4:45 a.m. and I am excited to get going every day.

Are you where you want to be now physically? Do you plan to maintain where you are, back off a little, or continue to progress?

Moore: Right now I am enjoying my off season and have relaxed a little on my diet and workouts. I’m giving my body a break. I definitely want to maintain my weight loss and muscle mass, but know it’s not healthy to stay as lean as competition day. I hope this year I can build a more solid foundation to compete again next year. Having qualified for provincials this year I

have decided to take one year off to better prepare myself for next year’s show. once a person has qualified for provincials, they must compete within two years.

Harding: I am not where I want to be physically. one thing I know is that there is no such thing as a perfect body, but I am going to chase it as hard as I can. I am going to push myself more and more each day because bodybuilding is an art. If your mind can conceive it, you will achieve it. I will be competing again at the MABBA Provincials in winnipeg. I’ve been training as hard as I can to bring myself into this competition looking better than ever.

What differentiates what you are doing from the average person who goes to the gym, tries to stay in shape through exercise, healthy eating?

Moore: what differentiates me from the average person that works out is the amount of time I work out, the intensity, and the diet. I found prior to this training that I would work out four

to five times a week but found it difficult to lose weight. It wasn’t until I really watched my diet that I noticed the biggest change in my weight and body consistency.

Harding: The difference between what I do and what other gym goers do is that I am not there just to be fit. I am there sculpting my body, dialing in every aspect possible to achieve the body I need to compete. Also the diet which I consume is beyond what the average person in the gym follows.

Has what you are doing been an inspiration to friends, family, coworkers?

Moore: I never thought that my journey would have such an impact on so many people. To have people tell me that I have inspired them makes all of the long workouts, lack of sleep, and boring diet completely worth it. It’s inspiring to inspire!

Harding: I find that what I do rubs off on the people around me. I am also a personal trainer. I train family members, friends, and help coworkers with custom meal plans, and meal plans that suit their lifestyles. I am currently training a client getting ready for hockey tryouts. My card can be picked up at the front desk at the Rec Centre.

Physically, mentally how does being in your level of shape make you feel? What are the benefits you have been seeing in your everyday life?

Moore: working out decreases stress, releases endorphins, creates a

better night’s sleep, and the list goes on. Although at times I was tired and missed having more free time, I felt amazing both physically and mentally. It definitely made me realize that I was capable of being tenacious and disciplined. Pushing myself and challenging my body and mind to my limit made me feel as though I could achieve anything.

Harding: Doing what I do makes me physically and mentally prepared for anything. The sacrifice and discipline that go along with my training applies to everyday life at home with family as well as coaching my kid’s hockey. Benefits to doing this makes me appreciate every minute of life because there is no time to waste. I am always go, go, go.

Tell me about the bodybuilding competition you were just at. How did you place? How many people were you competing against? Were you happy with how you placed? What was it like competing at that event? What was the deal with the spray on tan? Was it your first time competing in a bodybuilding competition? Do you plan to attend future body building competitions?

Moore: There were over 200 competitors in all divisions. It was a long draining day but well worth the few minutes spent on stage. Although I was disappointed in how I placed I found it motivated me to do better next year. I placed fifth out of six competitors in my division. The top

five in each division qualify for provincials. next year I will be competing in provincials as well as the MABBA provincial qualifier again for practice.

The spray tan was interesting LoL. we had our first coat the day before, a second coat the day of the show, and then we were glazed before stepping on stage. It was sticky and turned green if you got sweaty! The tan helps to show all of the muscle definition in the body. Most of it washes off in the shower but it wears off entirely after about one week.

Harding: I competed in the Men’s Physique category which had nine competitors in my Class (CLASS A “SHoRT”). I placed third in my class and qualified for provincials. I was very happy with my third place finish in my first competition. I met so many people and made so many new friends while I was there. I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel when I stepped on stage, but when it was time I walked out with a big smile on my face and it hit me, this is where I belong and I love it. The spray tan makes you dark which brings out the muscle definition more when you go on stage in front of the bright lights. If you don’t have a spray tan and go on stage the lights wash you out and muscle definition is minimal.

Do you ever train together? Did it make competing at the completion easier having a friend from Sioux Lookout in it with you?

Moore: It was nice to have someone in Sioux Lookout who was

preparing for the same competition. we didn’t train together but when we ran into each other at the gym we always spoke about our training, diets, and how we were feeling.

Harding: It was nice knowing that someone else from Sioux Lookout was going to be competing. we have not trained together but we did chat a lot about our preparations and how things were going.

What would be your advice for anyone who might be inspired by you and would like to try out bodybuilding for themselves?

Moore: For anyone interested in competing, my advice would be to sign up for a show! Give yourself plenty of time to train and prepare for the competition. I would also highly recommend a trainer and posing coach as there is a lot more to it than just regular diet and exercise. Surround yourself with people who will support you and be there for you every step of the way. I would have never stepped onto that stage without all the support I received from my husband, family, and friends. Believe in yourself and remember that dead last is greater than did not finish, which trumps did not start.

Harding: To anyone out there who has ever thought of trying a bodybuilding or fitness competition I would say go for it. you only live once. everything you learn during the process from doing so will stick with you forever. I’d like to thank everyone who has supported me.

Sioux Mountain Public School hosts family events

Geoff ShieldsstAff Writer

open House were held at Sioux Mountain Public

School on the evening of May 7. Approximately 100 children and parents were in attendance to enjoy a chili and bun dinner made by the students.

Math orientated games were available on tables set up in the gymnasium which were manned by staff members. All present were invited to participate in the

activities on display. Also available was the opportunity for parents to visit the Kindergarten room where teachers were on hand to meet families and children.

Principal Michael Boos was happy with the turnout. “I was pleased to see so many people attend our first numeracy night. we were also happy to provide our community with another opportunity to visit our Kindergarten classroom to see the great work and to meet our wonderful team of educators in that program.”

Vice Principal Chris Conquer explained the reason for holding numeracy night. “we want to encourage mathematics at school, and it’s about showing parents and families

what they can do with their children regarding math at home. Tonight we were showing different forms of mathematics that families can do at home. we are trying to get families from all over town to get a better understanding of what they are all about and what you can do at home with your kids. we wanted to build their knowledge that mathematics is all around us.”

He added, “we also wanted to showcase our fabulous Kindergarten program, have classrooms open with teachers present to meet families and children who may come to the school in September.”

Lindsay young teaches Kindergarten at SMPS. “It’s a great turnout and we had lots of families from the community in attendance and lots of happy children,” she said.

Comments from parents were positive. Liz ward observed, “I think it was a wonderful night for families to come out to learn about the school and for the little ones to see what classrooms they will be going into this year.” Vicki Hartnett added, “It was really nice. The kids enjoyed it and the food was delicious .The buns were made by the Grade 5 students and they did an excellent job.”

Beth Dasno summed up the night. “It was wonderful chili and a full house. I enjoyed the evening immensely.”

Chili and math games were offered to patrons. Learning the value of money at an early age.

Doing it old school at PFFNHSPelican Falls First Nations High School students squared off in an old-fashioned log-sawing contest May 2 at the school. Ryan Kwandibens and Derek Kakekagumick achieved the fastest time for the boys. On the girls side, Carley Meekis and Krista Meekis finished in first place.

House Two counsellor Fred VanderPloeg came across the old saw and thought it might be fun for students to try it out.

“Our students had a great time and I think some of them have a new respect for their grandparents and how much work a chore like cutting wood used to be,” he said.

Students roasted marshmallows over a bonfire that evening.

There are a number of different week long camps in various sports and at various levels of difficulty. The traditional sports of volleyball, basketball, soccer, track and field and gymnastics have been the favourites of past participants. There also are two weeks

of equestrian camps and one week of a wilderness training camp. These camps provide a wonderful opportunity for students to enhance skills in something they love or to learn something new. For the first time, the camp will offer baseball (hardball) during the last week of camp.

each of the local schools has brochures in their offices with an application form that lists the programs and which

week they are being offered. There also are brochures at the front desk at the Recreation Centre. Included on the brochure is the application form and other information about attending the camp. The Royal Canadian Legion in Thunder Bay only provides bus service the first week in August to the camp and for a nominal fee. The bus picks up campers in the various locations on the way to the Peace Gardens. (our

campers have to travel to Dryden to meet the bus.) early registration will help the campers secure a spot on the bus.

The local auxiliary wants to sponsor some interested participants to this great camp. The group will pay $225 of the registration fee for interested youth that apply in time. If you are interested in attending this camp, you need to write a letter to the Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Box

992, P8T 1B3, by May 31st. you could also give your letter to any Legion Ladies member. your letter must include your full name, age, address, telephone number and reason for attending the camp. The Auxiliary appreciates hearing from participants after they return from camp. For further information, call Sandra Lockhart at 737-2268.

Community members run to support cancer researchGeoff ShieldsstAff Writer

on May 4 the 10th winnipeg Police Service

Half Marathon was held at Assiniboine Park in winnipeg. The event was inaugurated in 2005 and is held annually to raise money for Cops for Cancer which is given to the Canadian Cancer Society to support research.

Approximately 2900 runners attended the

event, among them Sioux Lookout community members Alicia Mahon, emily Hamilton, Katrina Maunula, Rheal Robert, David Laviolette, Michael Kriesz, Mary-Ann Ketchemonia, Katie Magill, Faye Jonasson, Teena Spooner, Jason Spooner, Rita Campbell, Laurie Breton and her daughter Chelsea Jeffery.

Breton spoke about the event, “I have run in this marathon a few times in

previous years, but had taken a few years off from running due to an injury. Last fall I decided that registering would motivate me to get running again, but then we had such an awful winter that training was difficult.

“Due to the lack of training my intent was to finish in three hours with the hope of drawing adrenaline from other runners around me.

“The marathon raises

money for Cancer and is a small thing to do for those who can’t run. It is quite an emotional experience when you see people out there running for cancer victims of all ages; in support of them, in memory, or running as survivors.”

She continued, “Chelsea ran in place of Amy Houtz from town who was unable to attend. After the run I was overcome with emotion especially

when my daughter, who had finished ahead of me, joined me again to run through the finish line. I had only asked my daughter two weeks before the marathon to join me so she hadn’t trained either but still managed to finish with an amazing time. I felt a lot of support just knowing she was out there as she went on ahead of me. At one point we even crossed paths in the racing route and were able to

cheer each other on which was great encouragement for me. It’s great to run for those that can’t, and my run was dedicated to my friend Jennifer McKenzie.”

Jeffery added, “My mom motivated me to participate with her love of running and willingness to still do it, despite injuries telling her not to. After the run I felt very proud of myself and my mom for getting through it despite our lack of training.”

Young Aboriginal hockey team’s accomplishments recognizedTim Brody

AssociAte editor

THe Sioux Ice Hawks are celebrating a

successful season.Made up of novice

hockey players, girls and boys seven and eight years old, the team includes Aboriginal youth from Sioux Lookout and area as well as eagle Lake, Fort Frances and Kenora.

Head Coach Jade windego explained that the team was put together to play in First nations hockey tournaments around the region.

Many of the players play in the Sioux Lookout Minor Hockey

Association.The team competed in

the Little Bands hockey tournament under Lac Seul and won the novice division.

They also won the novice championship at the 26th annual All native Goodwill Hockey Tournament in Thunder Bay and were runner up at another tournament this season.

windego said, “These kids have been coming up through the minor hockey system learning to play hockey really well. All of these kids pass the puck very well and know how to play the game. They’re pretty advanced players.

“These kids work hard all year ‘round. They enjoy playing with each other and push each other to be better.”

windego said the team plans to change its name next season and compete in six tournaments.

His goal is to keep as many of the players together in future years as possible.

Members of the team are Jade windego Jr., Haylee Bouchard, Mackenzie Moyer, Zac Lance, Kade-even Bruyere, Kairn Fox, Teegan Szachury, Casey Gardner, emery McKay and Andrew McKay.

Recently, windego and some members of

his team presented one of their winning banners to Municipal Parks and Recreation Manager Gerson Agustin so the banner could find a home with other hockey trophies on display.

windego commented,

“I’d like to thank the Rec Centre and Gerson Agustin for letting us hang our banner there to recognize the hard work of these players and minor hockey for the great work they’ve done with them.”

Agustin concluded, “we’re very supportive of our young rising athletes from Sioux Lookout and area. It’s great to see young people staying active in sports and we’re happy to support them.”

SQUASH players took to the courts at the Sioux

Lookout Recreation Centre over the weekend to compete in Sioux Lookout’s second annual squash tournament.

Municipal Parks and

Recreation Manager Gerson Agustin commented on the co-ed tournament, “It’s going really well. The level of competition is great.”

Participants competed in two divisions following a round-robin format.

experienced players

Agustin and Adam Clark played two exhibition games.

Agustin said, “next spring I would like to host a regional tournament.”

The rec centre is winding up its regular squash league which began in September.

“we’ve had different people come out, on average probably 25 to 30 players. Lunch hour seems to be a really good time for people to come out. It’s picked up a great deal,” Agustin said, adding he would like to bring back a junior program next season.

Children participate in creative art experienceGeoff ShieldsstAff Writer

A t r a d i t i o n a l A b o r i g i n a l arts and craft

workshop was held in the new cultural room at Sioux Mountain Public School last wednesday afternoon. The activity was attended by 10 students accompanied by their parents and hosted by Catriona Dooley who taught the children how to make dream catchers.

Born in Sioux Lookout, Dooley a law student studying in British Columbia is presently on summer vacation. She shared, “I do Aboriginal craft in my spare time. In particular, I make dream catchers and I like to teach what I can. So one day I was reading the Bulletin on line and I saw an article that said Reilly (Scott) was looking for people to host arts and cultural events as part of youth Arts week, so I applied.”

Dooley commented on the workshop, “I think it went well. especially

I found that the kids enjoyed themselves. Most knew what dream catchers were, but some had never made one. However they all enjoyed themselves and some even made some for Mother’s Day. I look forward to doing it again

next year, or at any other events that come up in the meantime.”

Allison Keeash was there with her daughter Aisha. “we had a great time making dream catchers and the kids were very proud of their achievements,” she said.

Investigation underway into two-house blaze on Drayton Road

Tim BrodyAssociAte editor

no one was injured in a fire earlier this

week which destroyed one house and severely damaged another on Drayton Road.

Sioux Lookout Fire Chief Rob Favot said the Sioux Lookout Volunteer

Fire Department was notified of the blaze through a 911 call which came in from neighbours at 12: 30 a.m. on May 12.

Firefighters were on the scene in minutes.

“It’s undetermined how the fire started. we’re trying to meet with the owners of the house right now,” Favot explained. “The fire started at the back of one house on the deck part and spread across to the second house.”

Firefighters were able to contain the fire before a third house could catch flames.

“There was some heat damage on the siding

but we were able to put enough water on it to keep it from igniting,” Favot said, describing the third residence.

Firefighters battled the

fires in the two single detached residences for four hours.

Firefighters also rescued a cat from one of the houses.

Firefighters returned to the scene later in the morning to deal with

some hot spots.“The fire is underneath

the deck and it could smolder for days and the smoke can get into other people’s houses so we wanted to come out and deal with it,” Favot concluded.

Firefighters put out hot spots at a major fire in Sioux Lookout. Bulletin Photos/Tim Brody
