Summary
In this chapter, Dunmore portrays the war situation
through the feelings of Anna and the people of Leningrad
as they live in fear of the Germans. Dunmore shows off
Anna’s skill and experience, exhibiting the sense of
independency within Anna. Dunmore also introduces the
motherly factor in Marina as she takes care of Mikhail and
Kolya. The relationship between Anna and Andrei andbetween Marina and Mikhail is presented by Dunmore. The
readers get an insight on the understanding that the
couples share. Towards the end of the chapter, through
Marina’s and Mikhail’s conversation, Dunmore indicates
Mikhail’s ailing health.

Summary
No possible escape route, the only way is to pass through the
chill waters of the Lake Lagoda. So much of producevanishing every night (sugar, flour, fats and meat). This
shows how starved the Leningraders are during this crucial
situation, at the same time showing how near the Germans
are nearing. Leningrad completely cornered. Surrounded.
Despite the situation, a peculiar feeling of security. Thebelief that the situation is so bad, but they are still surviving
it. The assurance that things cant go worse than the
situation already is.

The food shortages etc. have become a casual routine for the Leningraders.
The hardships faced in the food industry. The amount of energy and time spent in
the industry.
The winter never ends. Always builds up high expectations in the Leningraders
that it is coming to an end only to allow another devastatingly cold, long snowfallwhich follows it.
Leningraders didn’t see it coming. (both the high class and the low class ones)
Finding new methods and ways to re obtain the sugar.
Visitors from Moscow via aeroplanes to reduce risk of German attack.
The fear of living in Leningrad itself, they are a part of whatever happens now.
