Another Successful, Eventful Year at Dairy BarAs in previous years, the Gopher Dairy Bar showed

great success for the Gopher Dairy Club. Sunny skies and record attendances helped customers support such a prestigious club by purchasing shakes, ice cream cones, and milk. The whole fair ran smoothly and there were no major problems that stopped the stand from getting our products out the door to awaiting customers.

This year, the club had deposits equaling $187,500. Another factor in the success is that we were able to sponsor the Milk Run again this year - but receive $1.50 back on every coupon turned in. With 1351 coupons turns in we were able to gain an additional $2,026. The club was also able to receive a five-year sponsorship from Land O’ Lakes which amounts to $10,000 a year! By accepting this offer, the dairy bar had a new look this year with various signs posted around different ar-eas of the sales room. The club is very gracious to Land O’ Lakes for their tremendous sponsorship and looks forward to working with them in the future. So, with all added up it truly was a great year for the Gopher Dairy Bar as we had a total gross income of $199,500!

With the profits from the dairy bar, the club is now able to do our yearly club activities including the senior trip, regional and national ADSA conferences, Gopher Dairy Camp and provide quite a few scholarships to incoming freshmen that have an interest in the dairy industry.

A big thank you goes out to the many excited Gopher Dairy Club members for working the dairy bar and ev-erybody that supports the Gopher Dairy Club in our continued success. We hope to see you next year at the Great Minnesota Get Together and serve you one of our wonderful products.

Forty-eight young dairy enthusiasts were treated to a three day camp on the University of Minnesota’s St. Paul

Campus. The eighth annual Gopher Dairy Camp took place from June 9-11 and provided campers with the opportunity to experience many different facets of the dairy industry. Youth in grades 6-10 from Minnesota , Wisconsin and Iowa attended the camp and learned fitting, showing, and judging skills - and were even able to make their own ice cream.

The camp had a loaded slate of workshop speakers this year. On Thursday, a showmanship workshop was taught by Tony Seykora, Brandon Thesing of MN Select Sires taught camp-ers about the A.I. industry, and the kids explored the inside of a rumen with two U of M graduate students. Friday’s

activities consisted of fitting demonstrations from profes-sional fitters and a showmanship contest where the campers could display everything they had learned. Campers also learned the importance of promoting a positive image for the dairy industry during the “Fair Talk” workshop by Lana Olson. On Saturday morning, Holstein classifier Maureen DeBruin gave a fun linear scoring demonstration which ended with a game in which campers were asked to draw a cow after being given its linear scores. Later that morn-ing Dr. Bob Horton from The Ohio State University gave a demonstration about the proteins in milk and how it is uti-lized to make the different dairy products that we love. The highlight of this workshop was when the campers were able to make their own ice cream out of shake mix and liquid nitrogen. The camp culminated in a banquet highlighted by keynote speaker Lucas Sjostrom.

Gratitude must be expressed to all those who made the camp possible including counselors, speakers, Amy Hazel for making the food, and to our sponsors: Accelerated Genetics, AMPI, First District Association, Land O’Lakes, Midwest Dairy Association, MN Farm Bureau, MN Livestock Breed-ers Association, Schroeder Milk, and Udder Tech. Without their help dairy camp would not have been possible.

U of MN Dairy Judging Teams Have “Gift of Gab”

Minnesota had yet another eventful year in the Dairy Judging Program. This year there were

four seniors, five juniors, and ten sophomores. The sophomores included: Jon Schmitt, Doug Petzel, Tyler Otte, Kelsey Petit, Elise Krause, Laura Rosenhammer, Erin Daninger, Emilie Lane, Jeff Borst, and Craig Betcher. As the teams traveled around the country, they continued the success Minnesota has come to be known for… their “gift of gab”.

The Senior team achieved a unique accomplishment through their judging career for the University. They finished High Team in Reasons in three out of the four contests they competed in; the Accelerated Genetics Contest in Viroqua, the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, KY, and the All-American Dairy Show in Harrisburg, PA. To go along with this accomplishment, the team of four women also had the high individual in reasons at all four contests: Elizabeth Olson at Viroqua and Harrisburg, Karen Anderson at Louisville, and Caity Durow at Madison.

The senior team, consisting of Emily Achen, Karen Anderson, Caity Durow, and Elizabeth Olson, began proudly representing the U of M this year by traveling to the state of Pennsylvania. After a seventeen hour drive, the young women competed at the All-American Dairy Show, continuing their streak for high team in reasons, and placing fifth overall. Individually, Karen was eighth overall and seventh in reasons. Elizabeth was twelfth overall and first in reasons.

The same four women were at it again a week later at World Dairy Expo in Madison, WI. After twelve classes on the colored shavings and six sets of reasons, the team finished their judging careers for Minnesota. The next morning the team waited anxiously for results, listing Minnesota as fifth team overall and

second team in reasons. The team members also did well individually as Caity was second overall and first in reasons. Elizabeth was nineteenth overall..

The Juniors began the competition year in mid-September at the Accelerated Genetics Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest in Viroqua, WI. The team consisted of Jacob Achen, David Hansen, Jayne Esch, and Isaac Salfer. Theresa Twohey competed as an individual. The team performed well, placing third overall, second in reasons. Individually, Jacob was fourteenth overall and tenth in reasons. Teammate David was eighth overall and second in reasons. Jayne also placed tenth overall and took third in reasons. To round out the success, Theresa Twohey was eleventh overall and sixth in reasons.

The junior team finished the judging year strong at North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, KY. The team was composed of Jacob Achen, Jayne Esch, David Hansen, and Theresa Twohey. The team was first overall and in reasons. Jayne led the contest, placing first overall and in reasons. Theresa was eighth overall and eighth in reasons. David was tenth overall and seventh in reasons; Jacob placed twelfth overall.

Our success is due to the time and effort of our dedicated coaches, Dr. Les Hansen, Scott Ellinghuysen and Alicia Thurk. Assisting were Brandon and Abby Thesing. Thank you for your patience, advice, and the knowledge you have enlightened us with. Another thank you goes to the many farms who have hosted us so we may improve our judging skills.

Big Opportunities in the Big Easy

This past summer, ten Gopher Dairy Club members and two advisors travelled down south to New Or-

leans, Louisiana for the American Dairy Science As-sociation-Student Affiliate Division National Meeting. The meeting was held July 9th-12th. Attending mem-bers were Mike Donnelly, Elizabeth Olson, Megan Udermann, Jason Kaare, Laura Weisz, Ashley Swen-son, Isaac Salfer, Emily Krekelberg, Jacob Achen, and Steph Kasper.

Our time spent in The Big Easy was highlighted by days watching presentations and nights exploring Bourbon Street. One of the highlights of the trip was the Swamp Tour near Slidell, LA. It was a great way for us Min-nesotans to experience a real swamp. The tour included seeing 100-year old cypress trees, touching a baby al-ligator, and getting some great photos of a 13-foot gator that was swimming right next to our boat!

Four of our members-Isaac Salfer, Ashley Swenson, Megan Udermann, and Emily Krekelberg- showed off their dairy knowledge in the Quiz Bowl competition. We also had the opportunity to attend the presentations occurring as part of the Joint Annual Meeting. We went to presentations put on by undergraduate students, grad-uate students, and industry professionals. Many mem-bers took advantage of this time to learn more about the facets of the industry that interested them most.

The conclusion of ADSA-SAD was the awards ban-quet. Once again, Gopher Dairy Club made an impres-sive showing. We won first place website and second place chapter yearbook. In addition, several members were ADSA-SAD Student Recognition winners. The club was honored to have one of their own on the re-tiring officer team, Secretary-Treasurer Mike Don-nelly, and excited to have our officer candidate, Emily Krekelberg, elected into the very same position. All of the attendees agree that it was a great time and we look forward to next year’s conference in Phoenix, Arizona!

Reunion a Perennial Favorite

Every autumn, the leaves begin to change, the tem-peratures start to drop, and dairy industry enthusi-

asts head to Madison. For any attendee of World Dairy Expo who also happens to be a current or past member of Gopher Dairy Club, they also look forward to the GDC Alumni Reunion.

Every year, Gopher Dairy Club hosts its annual Alumni Reunion in Madison during World Dairy Expo. The event has become a highlight for many members both past and present. The reunion is the perfect opportunity to catch up with University graduates and expand many members’ dairy industry networks. Having the event during Expo in Madison also allows current members to get out to the Expo grounds, and for some it’s their first time being able to attend.

The Reunion is always a great time for all that attend, and it allows time for reminiscing and making new memories. This year’s reunion was a huge success, and we look forward to seeing everyone in Madison again next year!
