THE BICENTENARY OF ROBERT STIRLINGA special display presented by The Stirling Engine Society to celebrate the bicentennial anniversary of the patent of Robert Stirling’s Heat Economiser.

THE SPITFIRES 80TH ANNIVERSARY The Supermarine Spitfire prototype Spitfire K5054 first took to the skies in 1936 from Southampton Airport. We will be celebrating this with a display by Ian Peacock. He will be showing the many models he has assembled, many from standard, proprietary kits, although many have been substantially customised to produce these versions. Ian will be on the stand and has a wealth of knowledge to share with you.

PHILLIPS & RANGELEY NO. 3Baldwin Locomotive Works No. 11706 was built in 1891 for the Phillips & Rangeley Railway, a 2ft gauge railway in the State of Maine in the north east of the United States. It was the first 2ft gauge 2-6-0 tender locomotive built by Baldwins and was unusual in having the steam dome ahead of the sand dome. The model was built to 1/3 scale to run on 7¼ inch gauge track. The original plan was to base the model on the “Maxi Lucky 7” design, however a Baldwin erection drawing for this particular locomotive was found and Gerry Clarke worked up a completely new design. The locomotive was built by Paul Frank and detailed by Paul and Gerry. The tender was built by the owner with help and assistance from a number of friends as his first major model construction project at this scale.

This year we have two separate workshop areas for your enjoyment. Our Engineering In Miniature Workshop gives you the opportunity to see demonstrators at work and ask them all the questions you might have about a particular issue you have experienced. This will be located in the new area on Stands 68+69.

DEREK BROWNBased in Rutland for over 30 years, Derek Brown has been intrigued with model engineering since a schoolboy, keen on locomotives in 00, 0, 3½”, 5” and 7¼” gauges and also very interested in the development of tooling and perfecting various methods and techniques. He has made many contributions to the model engineering press and has travelled the country giving talks to model engineering societies. A keen, but lapsed, pianist and repairer of church clocks, Derek is perhaps best known for his work on drill sharpening and metric screw cutting and not least for the books he has published, including the latest one on injectors.Workshop Presentation: A demonstration of steam injectors.

CHRIS ROBINSONFollowing a career in management in the oil industry after mechanical engineering training, Chris was keen to get back to real engineering upon retirement, buying a Colchester Student lathe and a mill. One project was building the Jacobs Gear Cutting machine which led to a keen interest in hobbing and modifying the machine to make helical gears using the standard cross feed (including low tooth counts and high helix angles - in effect worms), worm wheels using plunge feed, making worm wheels with ACME taps as hobs using tangential feed and finally a double enveloping worm & wheel set. A differential set up to allow the hobbing of spur gears with prime number tooth counts using non prime index gears has also been made.An Excel spreadsheet has been developed to determine the correct index and feed trains for helical gears and making worm wheels with tangential feed which uses the mathematical device of continuous fractions. The machine will be demonstrated making high helix angle helical gears. Chris will also have photographs and examples to demonstrate the many capabilties of this versatile machine and will be pleased to answer any questions visitors may have.

NOEL SHELLEYAs a teenager Noel played with lead, melted in a bean tin on a fire in the garden. It must have been a catering size tin as he cast what could pass for a cannon ball. Then his interest lay dormant for many years as he worked in various fields of engineering and, in a bet which some would say he lost, ran a small waste disposal business for 20 years. You would never believe the many wonderful things people throw in a skip!!!! Having brought and read most the books on foundry work he could find, as well as saving all sorts of bits and pieces that might come in handy to make a furnace he got a call telling him of a fellow near Norwich who was selling all one needed to get started in producing your own castings. This first furnace was affectionately christened “puff”. It was a fearsome fire breathing beast.By now the large collection of bits and pieces of all types were arranged in an orderly fashion and by Sunday evening they had become an extremely efficient and fast crucible furnace. The main components came from a washing machine, a spin dryer and a vacuum cleaner. Workshop Presentation Every Morning Pattern and Mould Making Outside Demonstrations Every day between 1pm & 2pm Running The Furnace

PETER STEVENSONPeter will be presenting a lecture on shaping sheet metal and has vast experience of forming metal by shrinking and stretching. He has made many parts for the Collett safety valve – make sure you go along and gain from his invaluable experience for your own projects.Workshop Presentation: A selection of some part finished domes showing the stages needed to produce them. In the original workshop area you will be able to meet members of the COVENTRY MODEL ENGINEERING SOCIETY who will be demonstrating everyday skills for modellers.

This year they will be making a small stationary steam engine from drawings freely available from the internet. Members want to demonstrate that a simple model gives some of the newer members to the hobby an idea of something relatively simple that can be built for minimal cost whilst allowing them to gain experience of the methods involved in using the machinery. Our thanks to Chester UK Ltd for sponsoring the workshop activities and the loan of machines – make sure you visit their stand to see the full range.

EIM WORKSHOP OUR LECTURERS & LECTURES

We are very pleased to be able to present for your enjoyment a very full lecture programme. Below are details of our lecturers and what they will be presenting for your enjoyment. All lecturers take place in the lecture theatre which can be found at the rear of Hall 1, please exit the building by the rear door next to the cash machine.

PHIL ABBOTT Steam In Model BoatsLooking at the various designs of steam plants and layouts for model boats.

MARK BROCKLEY Tools in a Clockmakers WorkshopIn this lecture Mark talks about his career in clock making and restoration and shares his knowledge and experience. He also looks at the tools in a clockmakers workshop which can be invaluable to the Model Engineer.

DEREK BROWN 3D modelling - Warts and all! The lecture considers the principles behind 3D modelling and how it differs from the traditional CAD process. The method is different from beginning to end and consequently gives rise to all sorts of problems, some of which might be foreseen but others which take the user by surprise. It is a brilliant concept but for certain applications can be the biggest time-waster known to man. Comparisons are made between the mental torture which has to be endured in both processes and it is hoped that the session will stimulate interest and curiosity in the systems available.Derek will also be in the workshop for hands on advice.

KEITH HALE Best Silver Soldering PracticeSilver Soldering is a very simple process. It is an effective way of joining two pieces of metal with minimum heat and distortion to attain maximum joint strength. Although simple, it is a skillful process. By appreciating what the process is and sticking to its principles, the model engineer will be successful. Moving away from that appreciation leads to difficulties and problems. The aim is to highlight those principles. Keith’s’ talk is part of CuP Alloys drive to keep silver soldering an essential process in the model engineers’ workshop.

MIKE HAUGHTON Lighting in the Home WorkshopMike Haughton will describe recent changes in Workshop Lighting Technologies and how they are helping him overcome age related eyesight deterioration.

NOEL SHELLEY Setting up and running a small scale foundry for model engineers This lecture will look at everything you need to set up your own furnace, the construction of the furnace and all the equipment you need. Noel will also be in the workshop for hands on advice.

PETER STEVENSON Some thoughts on shaping sheet metalA talk about forming metal by shrinking and stretching and how to go about it. Including DVD footage of the making of the Collett safety valve, bonnet and dome.Peter will also be in the workshop for hands on advice.

GARY WOODINGInteresting properties of Precious MetalsOK so you know that silver steel is harder than mild steel and that stainless steel doesn’t oxidise but how much do you know about platinum, gold and other precious metals? In this presentation you will hear about the characteristics of a wide variety of materials and how these determine the way in which jewellery is made to be attractive, practical and durable. Gary is a model engineer who has been hand-making quality jewellery for over 55years. This talk is not about making jewellery but rather about the materials of jewellery and how they could be used by the Model Engineer!

Full lecture programe can be seen on the back page of this showguide.

Building a

Vertical SteamEngine

By Andrew Smith Revised by Pengwern

Building a

Vertical SteamEngine

This publication describes the building of the Stuart 10V stationary engine. This classic model remains one of the most popular choices for hobbyists starting out in the fascinating world of model engineering.

This book will prove an invaluable guide to building the Stuart 10V and its detailed instructions may also be applied to the three other models in the No.10 range.

With this latest reprint we have taken the opportunity to include the most recently issued working drawings. We have also included a new chapter describing the fabrication of the crankshaft from materials.
