welcome the shops at wailea

Are you a kahu mālama ‘āina— a “guardian of the land?” There’s a lot of talk today about car-ing for the ‘āina (land). Perhaps society’s great-est opportunity lies in how we treat the ‘āina, and in taking a strong position in support of environmental sustainability.

At The Shops at Wailea and within the entire Wailea Resort, we are committed to minimizing our environmental impact, leaving as small a footprint as possible. The Shops at Wailea has an aggressive green initiative that falls under the CB Richard Ellis Standards of Excellence. This initiative touches everything we do, from recycling and energy conservation within the office to recycling programs for all the stores in the center. It includes our clean-ing methods and products, down to how we handle used fluorescent light tubes. I am proud to say that The Shops at Wailea has been awarded a Greenguard Indoor Air Qual-ity Certification. Why does this matter with an open-air center? Well, our restrooms and rest-room corridors are enclosed, and the air you breathe is not affected by any harmful cleaning agents, nor do any toxic substances run off into the water. Everything we use has been certi-fied by Greenguard.

Welcome, or perhaps welcome back, to Wailea. Join us in enjoying what is arguably the loveliest and finest resort community on this precious planet. We hope you have a wonder-ful stay—and become a kahu mālama ‘āina.

Military Meets Bohemianhigh-waisted, wide-legged pants were seen all over the runway, from designers such as Gucci (9eW) and Gap Women (B39). A tightly fitted top and jacket add the perfect sexy twist to the hard edges, retro enough to make a statement, yet very 2011. the maxi dress and jumpsuit are also hard to miss, a nod to ‘70s nostalgia. Maxi dresses with flowing skirts, ever the image of bohemian chic, come with a high-empire waist and can be found at Fifi & Bootzie (B9), Banana Republic (A47), Tommy Bahama (A33) and Bet-sey Johnson (16eW). A leather jacket found at White House Black Market (B49), or a military jacket from Banana Republic, adds some military spice to the updated bohemian look.

Got a shoe fetish? Lose those stilettos, then, because this season is all about platforms. Why not? they’re not only more comfortable, they’re more versatile. Betsey Johnson favors bright colors and animal print heels, Guess (12EW) takes the platform to new heights, while Sandal Tree (B7) gives you choices galore, including Frye, Sam edelman, B.Makowsky and pelle Moda.

White and BrightAccording to Gucci’s creative direc-tor, Frida Giannini, Spring/ Summer 2011 was created for the “modern Amazons; an intellectual tribe of exotic women, seen through an urban lens.” to wit: Now is the time to get in touch with your exotic inner warrior by being bold in your fashion choices–bright colors or stark white, the color of this season. the trick? pair colors from a refreshing, vivid palette, such as Coral and pacific Blue from Tori Richard (15eW), with white or soft pink or lavender from Gap Women. the look is effortlessly chic, just right for those Friday night Art Walks in Lahaina. tribal-inspired prints from Banana Republic or Fifi & Bootzie also give the Spring/ Sum-mer palette an extra pop!

Spring FlingAt last, it’s time to ditch the boots and bulky winter wear and spring into spring. We can breathe a sigh of relief as waddle-worthy blizzard wear gives way to a tornado of feminine new looks. Shorts, sandals, bright colors and classic white are the seasonal signatures, perfect for Valley isle style. the louche look, too, adds some sassy, edgy chic to the casual looks populating the runways. So let’s get going and hand-pick our fashion finds. Spring is a time of renewal, bringing refreshed, joyful ensembles that look great, feel good, and capture the spirit of the times.

Flawlessly FeminineHopeless romantics, rejoice. Floral prints come in all shades and sizes, bursting into spring with feminine seasonal looks. Banana Republic, Tori Richard, and Roxy (B3) are among the shops welcoming the season with airy, romantic dresses for any occasion. Subtle, nude shades give an added sensual appeal to complement sun-kissed skin, de rigueur as the days sprint toward Summer Solstice. We love the BCBG (18EW) dress with its plunging, deep-V neckline—simple yet stunning. Pale tones can look timely and elegant, as long as you choose them based on skin complexion and hair color.

The ClassicsClassic pieces, such as the white shirt and denim, are staples this season, ready to be as dressed up or dressed down as you choose. The white shirt can be matched with wide-leg denims for the offi ce, or with a rolled-up pair of denim jeans from Guess, suitable for a stroll upcountry or a drive to Hana. Over-dyed, cut-off shorts from Roxy, paired with the new, simple yet sophisticated white shirts with ruffl e and ribbon detail (Gap Women), are also a great look for a day at the beach. Whether you’re throw-ing on a pair of rolled-up jeans and a plain white shirt to spend a day at a festival, or wearing an airy maxi dress to a sunset wedding on the beach, you would make Tim Gunn proud. As America’s favorite fashion guru from “Project Runway” once said, “Please have the con-fi dence to embrace a seasonal on -trend item, providing it suits your taste, and lifestyle, and eschew everything else.” Happy spring! —Sascha Lykes

are you a shooting star, a rising star, a comet or the cosmos? the star power at wailea is blind-ing, especially at this time of the year, when the maui film festival, dubbed “the sundance of the pacific,” lights up the skies and luminaries shine at every turn. from June 15 through June 19, the maui film festival turns wailea into an a-list glamour fest as the spotlight shines on both the blockbusters and newly discovered cinematic indie gems of the future.

and it’s not just films, notes festival founder barry rivers. it’s electricity in the air, art and enter-tainment, tastings and socializing, and culturally significant films screened in wailea and at the maui arts & cultural center in kahului. more than 50 screenings are scheduled, says rivers, repre-senting the best in independent and interna-tional cinema and what he calls “compassionate and life-affirming storytelling, where the beauty of maui holds center stage.”

celestial cinema, the festival’s crown jewel of a venue, highlights the romance and beauty of the wailea outdoors and is literally lit by the sun. “we use solar energy to run that venue, light the pathways, show the films, and power the entire event,” says rivers. “the festival puts a special sizzle on wailea for five days and nights, infusing the resort with a magical glow year-round. you can feel it.” many of the films shown at the festival have gone on to win oscar attention.

wait, there’s more. there are several star-stud-ded culinary celebrations, including an opening night twilight reception, the starry night moon-dance, and taste of chocolate, a chocoholic’s fantasy with its gem-like confections and a sensuous, cascading dark-chocolate fountain. outdoors, at taste of wailea, food and wine pair-ings highlight the creations of wailea’s top chefs and sommeliers, who build upon the island’s agricultural bounty. new this year is the cosmic closing night fashion show and awards party.

festival passes come in all levels and price ranges, from basic film screenings to vip parties with a private car and driver. 808.579.9244, mauifilmfestival.com.

Cheeseburger Island StyleWhat better way to celebrate a cheeseburger and fries than with a cold glass of beer, or sev-eral? Cheeseburger Island Style has some of the best suds on the planet. There’s Maui Brew-ing Company’s sweet, savory CoCoNut Porter, a complex marriage of dark malt, chocolate, barley, hops, more hops, and a hint of coffee. There’s the crisp and delightfully simple Big Wave Golden Ale by Kona Brewing Co., a great ride in a bottle. Here, there’s a brew for every palate, and if you can’t decide what you want, try Happy Hour from 3-6 p.m. to sample them all. Cheeseburger also serves an array of tropical drinks, from the Maui Mai Tai to their signature Trouble in Cheeseburger, a Pina Colada-Banana Liqueur-Dark Rum medley. It will make some trouble in Cheeseburger, indeed.

KAI Wailea Sushi & Japanese TapasYou can’t go wrong pairing light fare like sushi with a refreshing, piquant beverage. KAI offers a drink menu that would be the envy of most bars. From the vibrant and aged Namazake to silky, fruity Daiginjo, the sake list is top-drawer and extensive. That’s not all: KAI also serves award winning wines and cham-pagnes, as well as a unique malt menu that is a must for any beer buff. KAI’s full-bodied range of libations is a perfect partner to the entrée and appetizer menu, which reaches far

beyond typical sushi and sashimi and adds a chic twist to traditional plates.

Longhi’sA local favorite since 1976, Longhi’s roster of pastas, vegetables, meats and fish have been analyzed, enjoyed and applauded for decades. Such fare is usually honored with sambuca and fine wine, and rightfully so. Longhi’s extensive wine selection enhances the food’s flavors with vintages from Napa Val-ley to Tuscany, and everywhere in between. The knowledgeable staff is available for pairings or recommendations, guiding you through an evening of dining perfection. Be sure to stop by on alternating Fridays for their fabulous “Wine and Sunsets in Paradise,” a cel-ebration of reds, whites and tapas.

Ruth’s Chris SteakhouseWhether you’re longing for a Cowboy Ribeye or fresh seafood, you’ll find it here, with libations to match. World-famous Ruth’s Chris offers a powerful wine and cocktail menu, from herbal pinot noirs (to accent the smoky quality of the prime rib) to cool chardonnays (to temper the harvest salad). If that’s not enough punch for the munch, their bar has a liquor collection that could bring you to your knees. Here’s a tip for vacationing lovers: Ruth’s Chris Wailea has been honored with the 2010 Hale ‘Aina Gold Awards for Best Steak and Most Romantic restaurant.

Tommy Bahama’s Restaurant & BarTommy Bahama’s has a notorious rum menu, but nothing tops Hawaii’s own Whaler’s Rum Rare Reserve, a dark aperitif that’s aged in wooden casks. If you’re thirsty for the perfect Hawaiian beverage, ask your bartender to mix it with Old Lahaina rum, which uses Maui-grown sugar and molasses, in your mai tai. It’s mai tai roa ai (the best—out of this world)! Just as the lunch and dinner menus have many options, the drinks list is global. Transcending the around-the-world rum circuit, it includes elegant martinis and the infamous Tommy’s Classics, a collection of exquisite potions for late-night revelers.
