An Amusing Premise

Dim-witted petty crook EARL has taken one too many wrong turns on the highway of life.  However, one day a twist of fate turns his life into a tailspin of life-renewing events.  Earl wins the lottery, but seconds later, a car hits him and his winning ticket blows away.  While recovering in the hospital, doped up on morphine, Earl watches a popular late night talk show where the host says that his success is a direct result of doing good things for other people.  It is at that moment that Earl discovers the concept of karma, and in hope of a better life, sets out to correct every bad thing he's ever done.

During each episode, our revitalized hero, armed with a long list of his misdeeds, seeks to cleanse his karma and atone for another of the many wrongs he’s committed.  Earl’s wide-ranging list encompasses childish prejudices, like "Made fun of people with accents" or “Picked on Kenny James in grade school,” or more serious offenses, as in “Let Donny Jones serve jail time for a crime I committed.”  Others are just plain ridiculous, like “Stole a car from a one-legged girl.”  Earl narrates each episode in deadpan style, never registering surprise at anything that happens, no matter how inane things become.  "If I want a better life, I need to be a better person" Earl believes, and in each episode, we see him cross off another wrong from his list in his roadmap to a better life.

Unique Characters

Randy, 28Earl's oafish brother Randy has been Earl’s sidekick his whole life, looking up to his older sibling for guidance and good times. Though he doesn’t understand why Earl has changed his life, he has a deep respect for his brother’s newfound quest.

Joy, 30Joy is a self-absorbed, shortsighted, gold-digging hussy who lives in a trailer with Earl’s old friend Darnell and her two kids.  While she’s beautiful and able to attract men, she’s overpowered by greed and is barely able to take care of herself because of her crazy schemes and fiery temper.

Darnell, 30Darnell is a good-natured but dunderheaded bar hand at Earl’s favorite drinking spot.  He prefers to play sidekick in any situation, and is frequently ordered around by his tough wife Joy.  Despite getting Joy pregnant back when Earl was still married to her, and then later stealing her from him, neither Earl nor Darnell hold a grudge against one another.

Catalina, 24Catalina is a beautiful immigrant maid who works at the run-down motel that Earl and Randy call home.  After the guys moved into the motel, she immediately became attracted to Earl’s good-hearted quest for enlightenment.  Playing sidekick to Randy, Catalina often helps Earl along on his journey, questioning his decisions or occasionally playing some kind of role in his schemes.

Earl, 32Once a picture of the shiftless, small town hick who never would’ve amounted to anything except a prison sentence, the Earl of today is a changed man.  Because of his life-changing experience with karma, he is able to understand what it means to “do the right thing,” and has taken it upon himself to let this seep into everything he does.

Truly Original Storylines

QUIT SMOKING  Earl tackles two items on his karma list: making up for all the second-hand smoke he’s inflicted on the world, and confessing to a man who served time for a crime Earl committed; and Joy decides to kill Earl so she can inherit his money.

TEACHER EARL  To compensate for having made fun of people’s accents, Earl teaches English to a group of immigrants; and an old friend of Earl’s gets out of prison and tries to go straight, like Earl, but soon returns to a life of crime... including an effort to steal Earl’s money.

FAKED MY OWN DEATH  Earl recalls how years ago he got involved with a clingy girl named Natalie, and faked his death in order to end his relationship with her; when he spots Natalie again, Earl decides to tell her the truth so he can cross “lying to her” off his list of misdeeds; but making amends to Natalie turns out to be harder than Earl expects.

RANDY'S TOUCHDOWN  Earl tries to make up for having Randy fix a high-school football game years ago so he could win a bet with a bookie; and after Joy has Earl’s car towed, not realizing that all the lottery winnings are in it, she and Earl race to get the car out of impound.

BROKE JOY'S FANCY FIGURINE  Earl decides to make up for breaking Joy’s fancy figurine: When he learns that the only way to get a new figurine is to win one in a beauty pageant, Earl agrees to enter the pageant... as the target in a mother/daughter team’s knife-throwing demonstration.
