NORTH SHORE MUSIC TEACHERS’ ASSOCIATION 1 The SCORE, March 2014 President’s Message It’s interesting how everything works out. Wael Farouk was scheduled to speak on the music of Rachmaninoff, and last night for the closing ceremony of the 2014 Olympics there was a huge pianistic display of the music of Rachmaninoff. Is that called serendipity? Clara Christian talked about her doctoral thesis—the influence of folk music on composers from music in the 1930s to 50s. I too, feel that we need to keep alive our folk music traditions. I hope our children going to the schools of today learn folk music. I am sorry to say that many of my piano students are not familiar with folk tunes. Clara, keep promoting. The Sonata-Sonatina Festival has been completed, and the Gold Medal Recitals on Sunday went well with everyone performing as planned. 9:30-10:00 AM Pre-meeting: Roundtable discussion on past special pianos10:00-11:00 Business meeting & refreshments11:00-noon Program—Piano Trios, with student performers

At the next meeting, March 17 . . . (one week earlier than usual)Meetings are at The Music Institute of Chicago, 300 Green Bay Rd., Winnetka, IL, 60093

From your program chairFrom Jane McInnis

Aye, and we’ll be meetin’ on the “wearin’- o’- the- green” day this month. Don’t forget to bring your memorabilia and stories about special pianos to

share during the roundtable, as our opportunity to do so in January was lost because of the extreme weather cancellation. I will have space set aside for displaying any photos or memorabilia you’d like to share with fellow members.

If you’ve incorporated chamber music in your studio, please bring along lists of repertoire and how you’ve been able to use it in group classes and recitals.

If there is time, in the true sense of a roundtable, we’ll open the floor for discussion on any topics or concerns related to teaching.

During our 11 AM presentation we will be able to reap the benefits of the research of Emi Murata and her colleagues, Dr. Daniel Gasse and his wife, Sarah. Over the last few years they have collected and catalogued approximately 18 pages of trios listed by level. They will be bringing 11 students along to perform selected trios of varying skill levels. We know ensemble playing helps develop musicianship—what a great opportunity for us to sample the variety of offerings that are available.

Finally, I would like to express appreciation to Ms. Emma Willcocks, a sophomore at New Trier High School, who organized and emceed a piano recital at Whitehall of Deerfield this past Sunday afternoon, March 2. Three of our chapter’s members sent students to play. These seven students showed considerable skill and poise, and were very well received by the residents of the care facility. They performed near Whitehall’s “Sweet Shop” and were rewarded afterwards with ice cream sundaes! Thank you, Emma! (Please see Emma’s report on the next page.)

Program will be on piano trios, with student performersFrom Emi Murata, presenter

“Piano Trios for Tots through Teens: An Exploration of Piano, Violin and Cello Trios for the Beginning through Intermediate Levels” is a presentation designed to provide an extensive graded list of piano-violin-cello trios which facilitates the proper placement of performers according to age, ability and compatibility. The success and longevity of the ensemble depends on this choice. The following topics will be addressed:

• Benefits of ensemble playing (not same instrument duets/trios).• Difficulties of forming a student piano trio.• Discussion of the elements cataloged and the criteria used

to catalogue them (technical difficulties on each instrument, musical and ensemble points, like-ability, appropriated age, etc.).• A general grading scheme will be used based on the previous criteria.• Discussion of collections with uneven difficulties (either one instrument more difficult than other within a piece, or one piece more difficult than other in the same collection).• Live performances of select pieces will be given to

illustrate.• Provide a handout with the results of our research.• Motivate everyone to explore this medium and collaborate with other studios, especially studios teaching different instruments, in order to provide our students with more chamber experience and opportunities.

Presenters will be Emi Murata, Dr. Daniel Gasse, and Sarah Gasse. Their biographies can be found in the Reference section of this SCORE.

Student performers will be Zhu Zhu Cai (piano, violin), Antonio Gasse (cello), Ernesto Gasse (cello), Alex

Moliner-Azabagic (piano), Jasper Park (piano), Jessica Park (piano), Ella Peterson (violin), Natasia Preys (cello), Sophia Preys (piano, violin), Luke Shalla (violin), Steven Shi (piano).

NSMTA students perform at Deerfield care facilityFrom Emma Willcocks, sophomore at New Trier High School

This past Sunday, piano students joined together at Whitehall of Deerfield, a care facility, to play some light afternoon music. Seven kids, students of NSMTA teachers Klin Ton, Layla Li, and Betty Benton, performed to an appreciative crowd of nursing home residents, family, and

friends. These students were between the ages of six and twelve, and their amazing musical talents were put to great use. The residents of Whitehall of Deerfield enjoyed and appreciated the performance, and were sitting downstairs waiting for the kids to arrive thirty minutes in advance. The students played up to three pieces, and the performance

lasted about forty minutes. Afterwards, they chatted while enjoying a scoop of ice cream from Whitehall of Deerfield's ice cream parlor, The Sugar Bowl. The staff of Whitehall expressed what a great event it was, and wanted to thank everyone who participated and was involved. It proved to be a great experience for the students too, allowing them not only to perform in a public setting, but to use their musical talents to benefit their society!

Kurt Saphir piano store in Wilmette is closingFrom Karen Tobias

The Kurt Saphir Piano Store in Wilmette is closing after almost 40 years. We are very sorry to see them go, but they have family matters and other things to attend to. The service part of their business will remain open—piano tuning and service to pianos they have sold. They will retain

the same telephone number. They also still have their website.

The Saphirs wish to liquidate the stock as soon as possible. Books and sheet music are on quantity discount. There are other items like gifts, large composer busts, folding chairs, and of course, pianos.

If you have a student looking for a good deal this could be the time to have them go in. The store is located at 123 Green Bay Road, in Wilmette.

Organ concert in memory of Donna Fortney’s husband, FredricNathan Laube will play an all-Bach organ concert in memory of Fredric Fortney (1933-2013) on Sunday, June 8 at 4 PM. It will be at St. James Lutheran Church, 1380 N. Waukegan Rd, in Lake Forest.

Nathan, who is only 25 years old, is an assistant professor of organ at the Eastman School of Music and concertizes around the world. Of note to NSMTA is that from ages 5 to

14 he was a piano student of Donna Fortney. He also studied organ at the Chicago Arts Academy with Dr. Beth Naegele. Because of his extended studies with Donna, many of our NSMTA teachers judged him in AIM, competitions, and sonata festivals.

At age 15 he was accepted at the Curtis Institute where he stayed for five years. He concertized for a year before studying under a Fulbright Grant in Toulouse, France for one year, and the in Stuttgart, Germany for two more years.

For further information about him, his concert schedule, repertoire, travels, and awards, go to www.nathanlaube.com.

To see Fredric Fortney’s biography, please go to the Reference section of this SCORE.

Applications for NSMTA scholarships are due May 1From Sandy Leibowitz, Scholarship Chair

Do you currently have students in grades 5-12 who are planning to attend a summer music camp, or a high school senior who is planning to attend college majoring in music? They may be eligible for a scholarship. The candidate must be a student of a NSMTA member, and must submit a DVD of his/her playing to qualify for the two annual scholarships.

The two applications are found on the NSMTA website and the rules are printed in the NSMTA directory for 2013-2014. Please note that the acceptance letter from the camp or college must accompany the application for the scholarship or it will be disqualified. You must list the pieces being performed on the application and the pieces must be memorized.

Please send your DVD’s or your You Tube recordings to me and, if you have any questions, e-mail me at [email protected] or call me at 847-272-6620. Thank you!

ISMTA also requesting pictures for their new websiteHello everyone,

We are moving forward with the new ISMTA website, but are in serious need of pictures for it. We could use anything that reflects what we do as an organization, from conference and competition photos to teaching candids, students playing a variety of instruments, stills of a nice piano with music, a piano on stage, etc. Any student pictures should be taken so

that the identity of the student is not apparent. We would prefer not to solicit photo permissions at this time. Please send photos in jpg format to

[email protected]

We can crop them as needed before publishing. We really appreciate your help in this important effort. Thank you!

Oakton Six Piano Ensemble Concerts The Oakton Six Piano Ensemble, under the direction of Conductor Glenna Sprague, will present concerts on Saturday, April 26 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, April 27 at 3:00 p.m. in the Footlik Theater at Oakton Community College, 1600 East Golf Road, Des Plaines.

The Six Piano Ensemble was formed by Glenna Sprague, Professor and Coordinator of Music at Oakton, where she also teaches piano. One of the members of the ensemble is Beatriz Levi, who is also a member of the North Shore Music Teachers Association. The group performs repertoire from the classical, ragtime, and popular periods that is transcribed for the six pianos by Professor Sprague. The rich, layered sound of the Six Piano Ensemble compares to that of an orchestra, with each member playing a different part of a composition as the melody transfers from pianist to pianist. The concerts feature the “Waltz” movement from the Masquerade Suite by Khachaturian; Fest-Poloniase by Liszt; Italian Polka by Rachmaninoff; “Musketeers” and

“Little Clock” from Sketches by Valery Gavrilin; allegro molto e vivace movement from the Symphony No. 1 in C Major by Beethoven; Pineapple Rag by Scott Joplin as well as other selections.

Tickets are $17 for general admission, $14 for seniors and students, and $12 for group rate. For ticket information, call the Oakton Box Office at 847-635-1900.

Critics from Vienna to Honolulu hail the internationally acclaimed Ensemble as “extraordinary,” “innovative,” “musical,” and “technically superb.” The artistic success of the Oakton Six Piano Ensemble has resulted in prominent concert engagements across the United States and Europe, including the College Music Society International Conference in Vienna, Austria; MTNA National Conferences in Atlanta and Spokane; National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy; Steinway of Chicago’s Community Concert Series; and the Music Teachers’ Association of California State

Convention in Los Angeles. This year the Ensemble has been invited to perform at the National Group Piano and Piano Pedagogy Forum at the University of Cincinnati College- Conservatory of Music.

The ensemble has recently released its second CD entitled, Oakton Six Piano Ensemble: Live in Concert II.

Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. Information on the Elgin Symphony OrchestraFrom Gwen Gage, ESO Board of Directors/Volunteer

The Elgin Symphony Orchestra is a professional organization located in the suburbs of Chicago that hosts many educational events throughout the year for students and/or their families. There are three family concerts per season and each spring there is a week of concerts specifically designed to support the Illinois Learning Standards.

Besides these events, at each regularly scheduled concert students can purchase a ticket for $10 at Will Call by showing their school ID.

Specifically, we would like to share with your membership that

April 7-11 we are presenting “Symphony Safari.” These concerts explore how music reflects the sounds heard in nature. Conductor Randal Swiggum prepares a very informative presentation that supports Illinois Learning Standards.

There are two concerts each day. The first concert is at 9:45 am and the second begins at 11:15 am. The cost is $7 per student. Music teachers or classroom teachers can order tickets by calling Wendy Evans, Education Manager at 847-888-0404 x238. Your members can find out more specific information at www.elginsymphony.org.

There will be a family concert on Saturday, April 12. The cost is $5 per person (adult or student). The repertoire will be the same as the "Symphony Safari".

These student and family concerts are held at the Hemmens Cultural Center, 45 Symphony Way, Elgin, IL.

Thank you for anything that you can do for us or any recommendations of how we might reach out to music educators in this part of Illinois.
