Why religion is giving way to spirituality in contemporary Britain
‘... those forms of religion that tell their followers
to live their lives in conformity with external
principles will be in decline. Many churches are
likely to fall into this category.
By contrast, those forms of spirituality in the West
that help people to live in accordance with the
deepest, sacred dimension of their own unique
lives can be expected to be growing.’

Continuing professional development opportunities at New College
Main Speakers:lPaul Heelas – Professor of Religion and Modernity, University
of Lancaster lLinda Woodhead – Senior Lecturer in Christian Studies,
University of Lancaster
What are the implications of their work for those working in congregations and chaplaincies and for those teaching in schools? Conference participants will have the opportunity to discuss that question directly with the researchers and a range of invited speakers, including:lCallum Brown – Professor of Religious and Cultural History,
University of Dundee & author of ‘The Death of Christian Britain’ (2001)
lDr Steven Sutcliffe – Lecturer in Religion and Society, University of
Edinburgh & author of ‘Children of the New Age’ (2003)
lHijme Stoffels – Professor of Sociology of Religion, Free University of
Amsterdam
lRev Dr Russell Barr – Parish Minister, Cramond, Edinburgh
lRev Dr Georgina Nelson – Chaplain, St John’s Hospital, Livingston
In a unique Scottish event, Professor Paul Heelas and
Dr Linda Woodhead from the University of Lancaster
will present their evidence for the changing face of
religion in contemporary Britain. They led the ‘Kendal
Project’, a major empirical study of the
churches and other spiritual groups in
one British town. Their recent book,
‘The Spiritual Revolution’ (Blackwell
2005), draws on the Kendal ndings,
arguing that organised religion is giving
way to subjective forms of personal spirituality.
The Centre for Theology and Public Issues gratefully acknowledges nancial support for this conference from the University’s College of Humanities and Social Science.
