New at the Center

We have magazines! We are very fortua-nate to have nine new magazine subscrip-

tions at the Center. Stop by and enjoy! This would not be possible if not for our sponsor, Atty. Chris Kervick. Thank you

Chris for your generous gift to the seniors. This is a well needed addition to

our library.

MUNICIPAL AGENT NOTES By John Sullivan

IT’S THE LAW !

Did you know that, in Connecticut, air is free? Air for

the tires on your vehicle that is!

Section no. 14-325a of the Connecticut General Stat-

utes reads as follows: “Any person licensed under sec-

tion 14-319 to dispense motor fuel for sale to the public

for any motor vehicle …shall provide for free public air

use, an air compressor for the purpose of tire inflation

during the hours such premises are open for business.

Each such licensee shall post a sign in a conspicuous

location upon the premises …informing the public of

the availability of an air compressor for free public use

during the hours such premises are open”.

The above information was provided by the Food &

Standards Division, Connecticut Department of Con-

sumer Protection. They define a “conspicuous loca-

tion” for posting the sign as (1) on the air pump, (2) at

the station’s entrance, or (3) on or near the station’s

counter.

If the gas station you patronize does not have such a

sign, you can be proactive: telephone the Food & Stan-

dards Division office in Hartford at (860) 713-6160 (8-

5 weekdays), request that they send out an inspector,

and later follow up to see if a sign has been posted in a

“conspicuous location”.

At some gas stations (once you ask) an employee inside

the station can activate the air pump by throwing a

switch, at others there’s a switch hidden somewhere on

the pump, and at still others they give you (once asked)

as many quarter-sized tokens as you need to fill your

tires. In other words, the only time you should have to

feed quarters into a gas station’s air pump is when that

station is closed.

P.S. Any licensed driver – not just seniors – can take

advantage of this law, when traveling in or through

Connecticut.

Good Luck! John
