copies for sale, each volume here numbered 115. [with] [Cherry-Garrard, Apsley]; Editor. THE SOUTH POLAR TIMES. Volume III, April to October 1911. London: Smith, Elder & Co., 15 Waterloo Place, S.W. 1914. Demy 4to, First Edition; pp. xvi(limitation note, half-title, title, versos blank, Contents, 6pp., last blank, & Editorial, last blank) + coloured frontispiece before title; ff. 152(versos blank) including 19 (of 20) full-page coloured plates, 17 full-page b/w. plates (of which 6 (of 7) are mounted and 9 are photos by Ponting), 47 coloured and 6 b/w. text illustrations; pp. [153]-160(Explanatory notes); printed in red and blue with numerous decorations in colours; original navy-blue ribbed cloth, with illustration on front cover & matching vols. I & II above; gilt edges; (LACKING the mounted plate at folio 55, perhaps since publication); a nice copy; very scarce. London; Smith Elder; 1914. ***An exact reproduction, unedited or revised, of the typescript Journal which was written and produced by the members of the “Terra Nova” expedition. The edition was limited to 350 numbered copies of which this is number 115 matching the first two volumes above. These three volumes comprise a very attractive and desirable addition to an Antarctic library, reproducing the single copy of “The South Polar Times” produced by typewriter (with variously coloured ribbons) and original artwork for the entertainment of members of the two expeditions. The success of this journal prompted Shackleton, its first editor, to take printing equipment on his own expedition and to produce the first book printed and bound in the Antarctic, the “Aurora Australis”. Notwithstanding the missing plate to Volume III this is a very nice, attractive set in original condition. [Spence 1094; Renard 1433]. #67365 A$13,500.00

16 Shackleton, E. H. AURORA AUSTRALIS. Cr. 4to, Facsimile Edition; pp. xxiv, [184](last 3 blank); coloured title to facsimile & 11 full-page illustrations; Introduction by Mary Goodwin containing 11 illustrations; a nice copy in dustwrapper. Sydney; Bay Books; [1988]. ***Renard 1441. The original work was the first book completely printed and produced in the Antarctic. Only about 60 copies of the original edition of Aurora Australis are known, the great majority of these being in institutional libraries. The endpapers of this facsimile convey a bibliographical falsehood, reproducing the signatures from The Antarctic Book, with two of the signatures moved to fit on the page! These signatures of course have no immediate connection with Aurora Australis. #25106 A$50.00

25 Shillibeer, Lieut. J[ohn]. A NARRATIVE OF THE BRITON’S VOYAGE TO PITCAIRN’S ISLAND; including an Interesting Sketch of the State of the Brazils and of Spanish South America. By Lieut. J. Shillibeer, R. M. Illustrated with Sixteen Etchings by the Author, from Drawings on the Spot. Third Edition. London: Printed for Law and Whittaker, No. 13, Ave Maria Lane, Ludgate Street. 1818. Demy 8vo, Third Edition; pp. xii, 180; 16 etched illustrations on 12 plates (2 folding & 1 printed in red-brown ink); modern half calf in antique style; the frontispiece (with a small tear repaired), title-page & following leaf washed, some occasional very mild browning or soiling to other leaves; the two folding plates sometime split at folds, with minor loss of upper margin to the second, but now well-restored and laid down; blank foremargin of pp. 173/4 restored; uncut; a very good, sound copy; rare. London; Law & Whittaker; 1818. ***Ferguson 728; Du Rietz 1188 “this edition [revised and extended] is the best (and apparently also the rarest) of the three English editions.” We are disposed to dispute Du Rietz’s claim as to rarity, the First Edition, printed in Taunton, being the rarest in our experience, but all editions are rare. The Briton visited several places on the South American coast, but was ordered from Brazil to find the American frigate, U.S.S. Essex, Captain David Porter, which was threatening British whalers in the Pacific. Details of the activities of U.S.S. Essex in the Marquesas are related. When the Briton called at Pitcairn the author interviewed John Adams, the sole survivor of the Bounty mutineers, who gave him a full account of the history of the mutineers after they left Tahiti. #51805 A$450.00

42 Smith, Lieut,-Col. Chas. Hamilton. THE NATURAL HISTORY OF THE HUMAN SPECIES: Its Typical Forms, Primeval Distribution, Filiations, and Migrations. Illustrated by numerous engravings. With a preliminary abstract of the views of Blumenbach, Prichard, Bachman, Agassiz, and other authors of repute on the subject. By S. Kneeland, Jr., M. D. Demy 12mo; pp. [iv],xiv, [15]-420(last blank), [421]-424(last blank, Appendix), [8](adv.); lithographed illustrated title-page (additional) & 11 lithographed plates, appendix; original blind-stamped cloth (spine a little worn; minor staining to inner margin of first few leaves; some foxing); a very good copy; scarce. Boston; Gould and Lincoln; 1855. ***A curious edition. The lithographed title-page is dated 1851, but the work was first published in London in 1848 without the abstract by Kneeland (Boston, 1851), which first appeared in Gould and Lincoln’s 1851 edition. The verso of the (typeset) title-page states that it was “Stereotyped by Hobart & Robbins; New England Type and Stereotype Foundry, Boston.” and below (in different type) “Printed by George C. Rand & Co., No. 3 Cornhill.” There is also a “Publishers’ Advertisement to the English Edition”, (pp. v/vi), however everything about the printing and make-up of the volume (printing, paper, imposition, binding, etc.) is suggestive of an American rather than English production. The work includes references to Australian, Papuan and New Zealand natives and there are illustrations of a Papuan and a New Zealander. #65489 A$175.00

Cr. 8vo, First Edition; pp. [ii], xii, 258(last 5 blank); a few illustrations, notes, references, index; original cloth; a fine copy in dustwrapper. Princeton, New Jersey; Princeton University Press; (1999). ***Based on new insights into the behavior of chimpanzees and other great apes, our now extinct human ancestors, and existing hunting and gathering societies, Stanford shows the remarkable role that meat has played. Stanford argues that “the origins of human intelligence are linked to the acquisition of meat, especially through the cognitive capacities necessary for the strategic sharing of meat with fellow group members”. He cites the role hunting plays for chimpanzees where meat is traded for sexual favors and to cement alliances. #33703 A$65.00
