THE SCROLL Vol. XXXIV, No. 1 ST. PATRICK SCHOOL, WAUKON, IOWA December 18, 2011 St. Patrick School—Gifting for the Ages December 2011 Dear Alumni and Supporters of St. Patrick School, Yes, St. Patrick School continues to strive to meet its students’ needs and provide the parish community and the entire area an opportunity for a faith-filled educa- tional experience—the same goal that Father John Hawe had when he encouraged his parish to build St. Patrick School in 1883. We have set a goal of $15,000 for the Annual Appeal Fund this year. The money given to the Annual Appeal is part of next year’s budget and is extremely important as a part of our total income for the 2012-2013 school year. We have enclosed a donation envelope for your convenience. The donation envelope has been modified to allow each of you to make a choice as to how you prefer your do- nation be used—Annual Appeal, Endowment Fund or Building Improvement Endowment Fund. All are im- portant for St. Patrick School to continue its mission. We ask you to assist in maintaining the great traditions of St. Patrick School by your Gift for the Ages— whether it be toward the Endowment Fund, Building Improvement Endowment Fund or the Annual Appeal. Gifts for next year or those to the Endowment Funds are important for the future of St. Patrick School. We also ask that you remember St. Patrick School as you do your estate planning. May God bless you and your families. Rev. Joseph M. Schneider Pastor Richard J. Wede, Ed.D. Blast from the Past

From last issue of The Scroll, those playing baseball in 1961for St. Patrick School were: First Row: Michael Peyton, John Burke, Wayne Howe, Dick Zahn, and Jerry Gruber. Second Row: Father Slepicka, Albert Keenan, Phil Schmit, Edward Barnes, Dick Peyton, Blake Hegeman, Norbert Bakewell, and Mr. William Weubker. Those attending Prom were from five different parishes. They were (from left to right): Ray Ryan (West Ridge), Margie Steele (St. Patrick), Denis Welch (Lycurgus), Mary Therese Blake (Hanover), and Kathy Larson (Dorchester).

Scrip—The Ultimate Fundraising Activity

Scrip sales continue to climb each quarter and help the financial budgets for both the parish and the school. Every dollar raised through Scrip is one less dollar that needs to be given for the parish and the school. Everyone living in the community or throughout the United States can participate in this program. Many local and national-based companies partici-pate in the Scrip Program. They offer gift cards or will accept our local Scrip to be used to purchase items. You purchase the gift cards and/or St. Patrick Scrip at face value. The business sells the gift cards to the school at a discounted price. That discounted amount is what St. Patrick School retains with one and one-half percent (1.5%) going toward that parent’s tuition/fees. Last school year, parents/parish members purchased over $500,000 in Scrip. Our goal for this year is $1,000,000 in Scrip sales. During the first five months, we have sold over $300,000. We have a long way to go but can make the goal if everyone participates. The average family generally will spend over $1,000 per month for food, household cleaning/paper products, and gasoline. If Scrip discount is esti-mated at 3%, then a family would earn $15 in tuition/fee credit and the parish/school would also earn $15 in income. With approximately 750 parish families, this would generate $270,000 in total income to the parish/school/parents. And, the best news is that everyone is buying those products for their family needs—the only change required is to buy the Scrip cards before shopping. Anyone may designate their savings to any student attending St. Patrick School or attending the religious education program at St. Patrick Parish. Thanks to our dedicated committee members (Rose Ann Mark, Amy Garrett, and Cynthia Berger) who maintain all of the individual records, order Scrip cards, and maintain the inventory, St. Patrick School has raised over $45,000 for the school during the first 5 years. That figure could be ten-fold if everyone in the parish participated. As alum, even if you do not live in the area, you can participate. Please check out our school website to see the many na-tional companies that participate.

Major Gifts Received St. Patrick School has been blessed by many gifts throughout the years, and we greatly appreciate each and every gift received, large or small. We would like to recognize two gifts at this time. One has been received over a number of years. Jack and Dorothy (Sheridan, Class of 1944) Terhune have donated a total of $65,000 to the St. Patrick School Endowment Fund, part of the Al-lamakee County Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque. Those funds will be forever endowed and benefit the students of St. Patrick as the yearly income is the result of earnings from the investments. Frances V. Blake designated one-half of her estate to St. Patrick School. As Francis passed away in April of this year, the gift will be received by the school some time in 2012. Representatives of the Pastoral Council, Finance Committee, and School Board will determine how the money will be spent; however, it is anticipated that the money will be primarily be invested in the School Endowment Funds. These Endowed Funds provide a perpetual source of income to our school and help maintain tuition at levels for all parents to be able to have a choice for their children’s education. St. Patrick School is extremely grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Terhune and to Frances V. Blake for their foresight and generosity for the betterment of our students today and for many years to come.
