 T IS quite common for usto think that angels are

an essential part of theheavenly kingdom thatexists far beyond thesight of man and thatreside exclusively insome spiritual world beyond our present ken.

It is also almost universally believed thatonly men become angels. Whereverone may go in Europe or foreign landsto sec the magnificent statues supposedto represent the angels of heaven, it isfound that these are always masculine,and even the Latin word for angel is al

ways associated with the masculinegender. The early church fathers, especially those of the Christian religion,did not believe that women hadsoulsand could become spiritualized sufficiently to permit them of ever beingangels. A great many persons seem tofeel that St. Paul is responsible for thisearly attitude on the part of the Christian Church, because St. Paul seemedto have unpleasant experiences in thehuman incidents of his life in connectionwith women, and there are pages in his

writings which plainly indicate his antipathy toward women. However, hedid not deny the possibility of a femalebecoming highly spiritualized, for in aspiritual sense he recognized neithermale nor female gender, and in his writings he distinctly states that in heaventhere will be found neither male norfemale. In other words, he believed inthe universality of the soul.

W e cannot, therefore, trace this attitude of the early Christians to any

thing that St. Paul wrote, but rather toan early pagan belief regarding women.

It is notable that the mystics of theOrient did not have this pagan attituderegarding women, for in the earliestmystery schools of Egypt and otherlands, women were permitted to enterinto the spiritual work on the same basisas the men. W e have always beenhappy in the knowledge that the earliest foundation of the Rosicrucianwork guaranteed the women membersthe same equal standing as the men andpermitted them to hold the same highoffices as the men held. In fact, therewere certain branches of the work in

these early schools that were assignedexclusively to the women because of their high spiritual development, and inour organization today there are officialduties of a spiritual nature assigned exclusively to the female sex.

 The truth of the matter is that if weare honest and unprejudiced, we willadmit that the real angels of the universe today are the highly spiritual soulsof women, and that there is no higherdegree of spiritual development attainable than that achieved by the average

woman who seeks such attainment. The nature of woman is essentiallythat of the spiritual, protective tenderness that more easily attunes itself withthe Cosmic principles, and therefore, ismore easily developed into a highlyspiritualized expression.

In all of the ancient writings of themystery schools the quality of God’snature is often and variously treatedupon. It is only in the Occidental worldand in the Christian religion, especially.

that we find this duality of God’s nature overlooked in the attempt to expressGod as a part of the trinity. Most of the Oriental religions speak of God asthe father-mother Creator of the universe. It is true that in the pagan re

ligion of Egypt, God was symbolized bythe word “Ra,” but it is also true thatamong the mystics of that land the word“M a” represented the mother elementof the dual nature of God and by combining the two, we have the word,“Rama.” It may be interesting to notein passing that the word "M a,” or thesound of "M ” followed by almost anyvowel sound represents the vibrationsof the female, mother, protective, maturing nature of the Cosmic vibrations,and it is interesting to note also that innearly all of the languages, the word for

mother begins with the “M ” sound. Ourattention is also called to the fact thatin all countries and among all races of beings, the first sound produced by achild in an attempt to express itself withwords is generally of the “M a” combination of sounds. It is surprisingsometimes to be among childrenin foreign lands where no word of English is known, especially to youngchildren, and to find the infants cryingthe words ma, ma, etc.

 There is something highly specialized

in the nature of woman that makes herespecially fitted to be a more refinedexpression of the highest spiritual vibrations. Not only are her natural intuitive faculties more highly developedthan in man, but many other facultiesand functionings of her objective innerself are spiritualized to a very high degree. Her sympathy and understanding,her quick and complete attunement withthe mental and spiritual thoughts of others, her abundant and quick flowingmagnetism, which is soothing to thosewho are suffering, her warmth of affec

tion unassociated with any sex nature,and her stronger and greater inclinationtoward the pure and higher things of life, easily show the high degree of spiritual development which she has attained throughout the past generations.

W e are very apt to look upon theAdam and Eve story in the ChristianBible as a unique story of creation and,when casually read, it tends to give the

Christian the impression that the creation of Eve or the creation of a femalepartner for man was a secondary orafterthought. If we take the fact thatEve was created after Adam as an indication that it was only as an after

thought and, therefore, of less importance, we should take the same attituderegarding the soul in man. The physicalpart of man was created first and thesoul breathed into his body afterward. This, however, should not indicate thatthe soul is of secondary importance for,as a matter of fact, it is of primary importance, as we find by carefully analyzing the entire processes of creation.In many other sacred writings, however,we find the story of Adam and Eve presented in a manner that illuminates ourspiritual understanding, for in its story

there has been no wilful or accidentalmisrepresentation of the words as wefind in the Christian Bible in order togive undue importance to the creation of the male side of the race of man. Mostof the ancient stories depict the creation of the first man as being the crude,material side of the human race, and thecreation of Eve as the spiritual, refiningelement that was necessary to make man,as a race, a perfect expression of theDivine Image. In these stories, God ispictured as both male and female, or asa dual expression of Cosmic creation.From this primary creation came forthlove and out of this love there wasevolved first the body of man withthe strength and power to supply thematerial forms of creation, and then thewoman to supply the spiritual and protective forces for the human race. Insuch a story we see at once that womanis elevated to a hiqher spiritual basis thanman, while man is distinctly a creatureof force and material power necessary onthe earth plane in order that the spiritualnature of woman may have the material

foundation with which to mature a raceof healthy beings.It has always been the tendency of the

real mystics of the Orient and all landsto continuously pay  homage lo thebeauty, tenderness, spiritual sympathy,love and understanding of women. Tothe mystic, woman is God’s highest andmost beautiful creation and he neverl oses ei ther hi s r espect or hi s adorationfor womankind.

If any of you ever have an opportunity to read the writings of ElbertHubbard of Roycroft fame, who wasone of the early associates with us inthe establishment of the Rosicrucianwork in this country, you will be

pleased to read in his book entitled“Hyacinth” the adoration of womankind and the homage he paid to his wonderful wife. You will see in his beautifulwords and thoughts the typical mysticalappreciation of womankind.

It is a fact also that in some of theearly religious movements originated ator right after the Christian era, womanwas greatly feared because of herspiritual power and higher spiritual understanding, and for this reason therewere any number of new religious sects

organized in which woman was forbidden to take part. It is a strange coincidence that this peculiar attitude toward women developed in the Jewishreligion just before the Christian eraand reached a high state of distinctionwherein women were considered lessimportant in a spiritual sense than men,although in the heart of every Jewishman there is an immutable and greatlyenlarged adoration and respect forwomankind. It is a notable fact that Jewish men are ever anxious and wholeheartedly expressive in their desire topay homage to their mothers andfemale relatives. But every religionthat thus excludes women to some decree represents the attitude of fear of woman’s high spiritual development.And. just as we noticed the inconsistencyof this attitude in the Jewish religion, wenotice in the Christian religion that whileit went so far as to even deny the possibility of woman having a soul thatmiqht become sufficientlv spiritualized toever become an angel, the most holy of its saints are female, and the Virgin

Mother has a high place in the earlyChristian religion, which is still carriedout in the Roman Catholic Church.

While the average man of today, especially in the Occidental world, shows ahigher degree of respect toward womankind than we find in many Orientalcountries, he does not have the prejudicethat they have in regard to woman'splace in the activities of our worldly affairs. In the Orient, where the spiritual

nature of woman is recognized, she isconsidered incapable of assuming anymaterial responsibilities solely becauseof her spiritual nature. Here in theOccident the average man gives littlethought indeed to the spiritual nature of 

woman, but does recognize in her thepossibilities of worldly development coequal with men. On the other hand, themore intelligent and discerning man of the Western world, and especially herein America, has come to realize thatwoman’s highly developed intuition andkeen analytical mind are valuable business assets, and he is not only ready andwilling to allow her to hold a place inbusiness, but where she is not engagedin business of her own, he consults herin connection with his home affairs inregard to those matters in which he willnot trust his own judgment or intuition.

Without the influence of woman inthe world today, the world would be asorry place and conditions would be aa sorry mess. Woman’s higher nature,her tenderness, her natural desire forwholesomeness and cleanliness, and herappreciation of the finer things in lifehave not acted as a restraining influenceupon man’s naturally broad nature, buthave tempted him or inspired him tocreate the more beautiful and attractivethings in life in order to please the na

ture of woman. In every great crisisor disaster, in every great wave of suffering or perplexity, it is the influenceof woman and her natural powers thatcome to the rescue and restore peaceand patience. In any community absolutely free from the influence of womanthere is a marked evidence of the factand th’e future evidence of deterioration.In every such community where awoman has entered it to become a partof it. there is an immediate change forthe better. In this regard we cannot

help but look upon woman as the angels on earth and, if their influence canbe such as that here in this materialworld, we feel sure that if there are anyangels in the future spiritual kingdom,to maintain peace, beauty, sweetness,elegance, love, happiness, and adorationtoward all that is good and godly, itmust be because the woman are the angels there.

O PROLIFIC isoutput of booksspiritualism in our day,and so questionable in

character and void of any helpful instructionis the majority of them,that one may be pardoned for regardingaskance a volume that

recently appeared under the above titleby Mr. Geoffrey Hodson. On perusingthis book, however, we find ourselves inan entirely different field of investigation. The matter is exceedingly interesting and merits close attention.

In the first place, the author’s methodof procedure is thoroughly scientific andhis record of results from personal investigation is corroborated by many independent witnesses in the Theosophi-cal and scientific world. There is nothing here of a spiritualistic or mediumis-tic type. The author is an advocate of exact clairvoyance, and the informationhe gives of a superphysical nature isderived from careful research throughthe exercise of that faculty.

In his introductory chapter he statesthat his purpose is to make a criticalexamination of the subject of super

normal cogni ti on. Such a purpose canobviously only be adequately fulfilledby one who has personal experiencearising from the exercise of .supernormal faculties. With these facultieshe has made crucial tests along the linesof scientific research and the diagnosisof disease. As a matter of fact, researchof this character has been in progressfor a considerable period in our Order,and many of us who are intimate with

the procedure therein are aware howfar advanced are some of the proficientsin it and the work they have accomplished. To these the book will make

a definite appeal; they will note the researches with complete understanding,and be in a position to compare his explanations and conclusions with theirsystematized grade instruction and experimental practice.

 The records of clairvoyant investigation in the fields of scientific researchand the diagnosis of diseases submittedby the author in two memorable chapters on these subjects indicate only tooplainly how necessary to the better welfare of humanity is the introduction intoprofessi onal spher es of a supernormalmethod of cognition. Every day testifies to the inadequacy of ordinary ob jective methods of research and application in science and healing, and notin these alone. M any of the author’sclairvoyant investigations were carriedout in conjunction with the scientific section of the Theosophical Society, whenseveral members of the section were always present and his observationsrecorded verbatim. The tests perhapswere all the more valuable and convincing because he himself had no knowl

edge either of occult chemistry orphysics, and his descriptions were oftenrecognized by the scientific members asappl i cable to occul t and physi cal  chemistry.

Of a scientific character his investigations embraced such subjects as theAstronomical, Bacteriology, the E lectron, Radio-active Substances and theElectric Current. He considers that thevalue of this research lies in two things:in the actual confirmation, or otherwise,

of existing chemical and physical conceptions, and in the proof, which isgradually accumulating, of the valueand usefulness of clairvoyance in theobservations of physical as well assuperphysical matter.

In his chapter on the diagnosis of disease the author points out that the faculty of positive clairvoyance enables itspossessor to respond to rates of vibrations which are beyond the normal human range. This is, of course, one of the fundamental tenets of occult science.Vibrational response is the key to the entire progress of the student on the path. The author tabulates five specific powers of cognition which the ascension of vibration in his own experience hasopened to him, and which are of special

interest in connection with medical research. They are: 1. X -ray vision; 2.

 The power of magnification and of television. 3. The power to see the feelings and the thoughts of others as wellas the vehicles or “bodies” in whichthose aspects of consciousness normallyfunction; 4. To observe the vital oretheric body; 5. To transcend, in varying degrees, the limitations of matter,time and space, as far as vision is concerned.

 These added capacities are the direct

result of the active functioning of theforce centres or Chakras. The supernormal cognition arising from the activity of these centres the author has applied with much success to the diagnosisof disease. Six cases are dealt with.Professors of medical science may scoff,they may pause and consider; the factremains that here once again they havesomething of first importance for them. They can scarcely be expected just yetto accept the author's assertion, for instance, that certain conditions investigated by him are due to a Karmicheritage from the past, that cancer isan elemental disease, and that its curelies primarily in the exorcism and destruction of the elemental. Moreover,he considers that the most effectivemethod of treatment in all cases of cancer to be that of the use of radio-activesubstances internally and externally, thedirection of electrons, and the application of electric-magnetic forces.

Extensive experiments in the field of psychometry were also made by the au

thor and his information and speculations on this subject are more reasonable than those usually met with in theworks of less scientific investigators. Thespeculative aspect of this chapter centresaround the two questions: whether theobject used serves as a medium for transmitting vibrations which are conductedfrom it along the hand and arms of the psychometrist and to his consciousness; or does the object merely serve asa link to place the seer en r appor t withthe Akashic records, which he thenreads without reference to the object itself? The author does not offer a finalexplanation but proposes the subject asone worthy of study and elucidation.

In the chapter on experimental explorations are given clairvoyant ob

servations of what are called in Theo-sophical terminology the ego, mentaland emotional consciousness. In thesebrief studies are presented graphic visualizations which are very illuminatingand helpful. There is a living reality inthese pictures which makes for personalunfolding.

 The same high level of investigationis maintained in the study of discarnatelife. The claims and methods of thespiritualist are placed in sharp contrastwith those of the occultist, and we find

ourselves in agreement with the author. The information here is refreshing andstimulating and in frank opposition tothe wealth of material published on thissubject which is the offspring of automatic writing and other spiritualisticcommunications. One is bound to affirm that a large percentage of this material is of a nature to nauseate anyadvanced student of occult research. The author is well aware of this whenhe warns the student seriously againstany methods which demand cessation of 

full consciousness and intellectualawareness in order to obtain contactwith the unseen. The medium, as hetruly asserts, is entirely at the mercyof such intelligences as he permits tomake use of his body, and is quite unable to scrutinize his unseen visitors, orto apply the reasoning mind to the communications which he receives whilst ina state of trance. “Complete understanding of any plane of N ature cannot

be gained from the level of that plane.” There is a hint of Baconian sagacityand conciseness in this statement, andit is typical of the author’s method. Hehas made certain clairvoyant investiga

tions of discarnate life and the examples given of communication with discarnate egos are transcripts of  post~  mor t em ex i stence, instructive in character and entirely free from the sentimentaloutpourings of the passive and untutored communicant.

In the chapter on "Clairvoyance intime” the author would appear to havetranscribed from the Akashic Records:one section is biographical, the otherhistorical. He presents “The Story of Simon the Essene—An account of aclairvoyant vision of Palestine at thetime of the coming of the Lord Christ”;

and “E arly British Races.” W e haveno means at hand to corroborate thesedescriptions, but may conjecture whetherthey are readings from the Records, orpossibly phases of the past existence of the author.

 The chapters on the psychic powersand the psychic sense organs are enlightening. Forms of meditation are indicated for their awakening and usewhich are general and Theosophical incharacter and no doubt constitute a hintin the right direction for development;

but, as is usually the case with textbooks on the subject, the student willregret the absence of any system of practical methods of discipline for theevolution of the higher faculties. These

chapters on the psychic organs andpowers are, of course, the culminatingand arresting points of the author'sdocuments, since it is a special development of these powers in his case whichhas made his investigations possible.But the persistent question of the aspirant is, how to proceed in a definitelypractical and systematic way towardsthis development. In this matter the author does not enlighten us; but concludes with general information regarding the position and functioning of thevarious psychic centres, with illustrativediagrams, in a truly Theosophical style

and in corroboration of its many textbooks. The book, however, is of muchinterest and is in many ways so clearlyin line with important investigations andexperimental work which have longbeen maturing in our hands in theOrder and have been brought to considerable proficiency by members of ourlodges, that the author’s efforts deserverecognition.

An Incident of the PastIN ANCIENT RECORDS WE FIND INTERESTING STORIES

URING the past montha number of our members have sent to usa newspaper clippingwhich was evidently

syndicated o r published in a number of newspapers. The clipping was the eighthinstallment of a series

of articles dealing with old Philadelphia.In this particular article reference wasmade to the coming to that city in 1694,of the Rosicrucians who left Germanyand England to bring the first Rosicrucian foundation to the new world. W ehave said so much in the past regardingthis early foundation and the many important fundamental movements inAmerica, which resulted from their activities, that I am not going to take spaceand time now to speak of these, butsimply call attention to the fact thateven though some uninformed personscontinue to believe the misstatement tobe found in some encyclopedias to theeffect that the Rosicrucians were not active in the seventeenth and eighteenthcenturies, the story of their real activities continues to appear in newspaperand magazine articles from time to time.

 There is one interesting incident as

sociated with the lives of the first American Rosicrucians, however, that is notso generally known and which everyRosicrucian should be proud and happyto speak about. I venture to say thatthe story I am going to tell now has notbeen told before in this country and willprobably be very astonishing to a great

many.First of all, let me connect this in

teresting story with the first American

Rosicrucians. Those Rosicrucians wholanded on the shores of America in1694 assisted in establishing one of America’s large cities. Upon their arrival in America they found this city

a very small village, undefined in streetsor limitations and unnamed. These Rosicrucians, constituting a specially selected party of workers in various branchesof Rosicrucian effort and general industries, were gathered from variousparts of Germany, Holland, and England; and before departing from theshores of Europe they visited Englandto receive final instructions. These finalinstructions had been prepared by theSupreme Council of Rosicrucians forEurope in accordance with a plan originally outlined in a book written by SirFrancis Bacon called “The New Atlantis.” During the time when Bacon waschief officer of the International Rosicrucian Council he prepared many plansfor the future activity of the organization and later embodied the essence of these plans in the book called “TheNew Atlantis.” The secret details of the plans, however, still remain privately known and preserved in secretmanuscripts. In accordance with Bacon'splans the one large Rosicrucian lodgeor group of students in London had

adopted a name for their group that didnot publicly reveal its Rosicrucian nature. This was common practice throughout the Rosicrucian Order in those daysand is today in most foreign lands.

 This special group in England calleditself the Philadelphians, utilizing theold Greek word of “Philadelphia” assymbolic of its purposes. Jacob Boehme, Jane Leade, and many other well-known Rosicrucian writers and authorities, were associated with this group

as officers or instructors. When the selected group of Rosicrucians visitedEngland they attended a special meeting of the Philadelphians and there received their parting instructions.

After arriving in America and assisting in the development of the primitivevillage in which they located, and having aided in the establishment of a number of important institutions and industries, they proposed the name of Philadelphia for the city and it was adopted.

 This is shown in many of the recordspreserved in Congress and in the historical writings of Philadelphia andPennsylvania and proves that the namePhiladelphia was not bestowed uponthe city by the Quakers, for when theseRosicrucians arrived on the Pennsyl

vania shores there were few Quakersto be found and they had not organizedthemselves or even built their firstchurch and the village had no name andno definite form.

 Too much has already been publishedin books and magazine articles dealingwith this incident for me to elaborateupon it, and the only reason why Ispeak of the Philadelphia Lodge inEngland and its inspiration for the nameof the city in Pennsylvania is to connectit with another interesting story associated with the same characters who

were connected with the Philadelphiansin England.All of you who have read and studied

Bacon’s public wri ti ngs, as published in  his public books, know that his greatambition was to systematize and organize knowledge and the methods of obtaining knowledge. This was his onegreat hobby and anyone who readsBacon’s book “Novum Organum"quickly discovers that back of the manyrecommendations which Bacon presentstherein, for the boadening and wideningof human knowledge, he must have hadmany concrete plans and must havebeen very active in testing and developing these plans. The interested readerwho searches, therefore, for furtherlight on Bacon’s activities sooner orlater learns of his Rosicrucian connections and finds in a number of booksdealing with his Rosicrucian activitiesthe various societies which he established and the various plans for otherswhich he promoted in order to bring

about a revolution in the art of teachingand the development of real knowledge.

It will be interesting to our membersto know, therefore, that one of theseplans of Bacon’s exists to this day andis one of the most successful and world

famous movements of its kind. In accordance with one of the plans contained in Bacon's book “The New Atlantis’’ there was called together a number of eminent philosophers, scientists,and leaders of thought of England,France, and Germany, and it was proposed that these men, irrespective of their nationality, their personal beliefs,and their differences of opinion andtheir special activities, should unite inone group which would hold secret sessions in some concealed or private place

and in a closed chamber mutually discuss their philosophies and scientificknowledge and cooper at e in spreadi ng  new knowledge throughout the world. The records show that the establishmentof this unique movement included insistence upon the spread of new knowledge rather than the mere discussion of old knowledge, and that such newknowledge should center principallyaround natural law or the manifestationof Nature.

 This occurred in the year 1645 andafter considerable discussion it was

finally decided to call this unique organization “The Invisible College.”Now, before proceeding with the rest of the story, I should like to say somethingabout the selection of this name, for itis highly significant. The word “college’’ in those days did not have the  limited or exclusive meaning that isgiven to it today in the Western world,It is to be noted, for instance, that theRosicrucians who left Germany, Holland, and England to come to Americaa few years after this college was es

tablished had come from groups orlodges of the Rosicrucians in their countries, which groups were called Collegi, and in many of the Rosicrucian recordswe find the highest lodges of the Rosicrucian organization called Collegium  Spiritum, or, in other words, spiritualcolleges or colleges of spiritual matters.Any group or assembly of learned persons devoted to research and studyalong certain lines for the purpose of

spreading that knowledge to others wasproperly a college, and it is from thisoriginal meaning that the present daymeaning of the word is derived.

But this college, organized in accordance with Bacon’s plans, was

to be an invisible one. It wasnot to have any permanent struc-ture, any permanent meeting place, orany permanent form of organization,and was, in fact, to be kept secret, private, and unknown to the public as a college or organization. The only mannerin which the public would ever benefitfrom the existence of this college wasthrough the spread of its work on thepart of those individual members in theirown localities or countries. No one whowas connected with it was to admit thatthey belonged to such an organization,or that such a college existed, or thatthey knew anything about it. W e seein this a duplication of the ancient Rosi-crucian movement called “The InvisibleBrotherhood,” composed of the specialworkers of the Great White Lodge whomet from time to time on special callin various cities of Europe for the purpose of determining what procedure wasto be taken in regard to national affairs,the spread of knowledae. and the development of science. Thus the Invisi

ble College, born in 1645 in London, wasat once a world-wide movement and asecret one. invisible in every element of its material form. The first presidentselected to be the chief director of thisnew college was the eminent naturalistand philosopher Robert Boyle. Thoseof our members who are interested inknowing why he was selected will bepleased when they read in any encyclopedia, or especially in the EncyclopediaBritannica, a biographical sketch of Boyle. Others who were officers or associated with this invisible college weresuch eminent characters as ChristonherWVen, who was not only one of England's greatest philosophers, mathematicians, naturalists, and architects, but aRosicrucian whose connection with theRosicrucian activities can now be foundin many European records. Some otherrecords say that before Robert Boylewas selected as president the first temporary president was Sir Robert Moray,

or M urray, as some records have it. Hewas secretary of state for Scotland anda man of high military and philosophicalstanding, as well as a mystic and devoutRosicrucian. His biography, found inalmost every encyclopedia, is interesting

reading.For many years The Invisible Collegecarried on its periodical sessions andreached many important conclusionsand recorded its findings, discoveries,and agreements, which are still preserved, and which constitute some of the valued manuscripts used in the Rosicrucian teachings. Some of the world'sgreatest discoveries were first announcedin these sessions and later on when itdeveloped its large laboratories manystartling and surprising scientific principles were demonstrated for the firsttime in secrecy before this large andgrowing group of secret workers. InLondon, today, can be found many of the instruments and devices used in thatoriginal laboratory and the manuscripts,still preserved, recording such demonstrations as those given by Sir I saacNewton and others who made their firstannouncements to this organization,constitute memorials of the great planconceived by Bacon.

 The organization finally grew to suchan extent that it was forced to meet in

a large building and for a time its sessions were held in Gresham’s College,and the organization was referred to asthe "Academy” in 1660, when its existence became known to other educators.However, this little publicity soon developed into a nation-wide appreciationof this remarkable organization, and itwas found undesirable to continue touse the secret name of “The InvisibleCollege.” Therefore, under the approval of Charles II the college wasofficially re-named and appears on the

English records of 1662 as the “Rosicrucian Academy,” which name it retained for some time. Then by a furtherrecommendation of some of the eminentscientists, and with the approval of Charles II, the society was re-namedagain and this time they adopted theLatin name, “Regalia Societas Londoni,”or in other words, the Royal Society of London. This name it still bears, andit is today one of the largest, most con

servative, most learned, and importanteducational institutions in the world.

 The Royal Society did not become acollege in the ordinary sense, but remained a society of affiliated scientists,philosophers, alchemists, naturalists; andAlchemy and the mystical philosophieswere especially deal t with and the laboratory developed into a large one connected with a marvelous museum andfinally possessing an enormous library.Its library contained sixty thousand of the rarest volumes of knowledge possibleto obtain, and its museum collection became so large that it was divided anddistributed among other museums, butits original laboratory equipment withwhich many of the al chemical and Rosicrucian principles were tested and dem

onstrated, is still preserved intact as anexhibit of great importance. JacobBoehme and many other Rosicrucianlights were active workers here, and itwas in this group that Robert Fludd introduced some of the important Rosicrucian teachings, and it was here thatLocke, the philosopher and scientist andpersonal friend of da Vinci, the Rosicrucian, made many of his tests of natural law.

 Today, when any emi nent sci ent i st  or philosopher has a new and surprisingpostulation or principle to present to theworld, he is invited to make his first announcement before the Royal Society of London. Those who are honored fortheir great work in the spreading of newknowledge are elected and made Fellows of the Royal Society, and arethereby entitled to put the initialsF. R. S. after their names, and if welook through the list of world’s greatesteducators, philosophers, and scientists,we will find that hundreds of them havebeen thus honored and are proud tohave these initials after their names. The

Society publishes the results of its workin private books called “The Proceedings of the Royal Society.” This publication work was started when the organization was still The Invisible College and when all the reports were written by hand and in secret manuscriptswhich are still preserved.

about the Royal Society of London inthe Encyclopedia Brittanica or anyother similar reference work, and theyW i ll find there a verification of the factthat the great educational movementwas first known as The Invisible Col

lege, originated by the Rosicrucians.Also while you are reading on this sub

 ject in the encyclopedia, do not fail toread about Van Helmont, who was oneof the early workers in the College,and about Fludd, Boehme, Locke, andthe others whose names I have mentioned.

If any should say to you, “W hatgood has ever come out of the secretactivities and private work of the Rosicrucians?’’ you can point with pride and joy to the founding of The Invisible

College and its development into theRoyal Society as but one instance andone incident. Few persons realize theadvantages to be found in secret andprivate activities and few persons realizehow many forms of private activitiesare being carried on today throughoutthe world by the various Rosicrucian

 jur i sdicti ons. To j udge the Rosi crucian  organization solely by its outer activities or by its public propaganda is tomake a grave error. Its public work isbut the outer elementary form of contact with the masses, and its public or

ganizations and meeting places are butpoints of communication between thecentral secret activities and the worldat large. Each high officer in the organization in every land may have apublic office in the Order and appear tobe devoting himself exclusively to theouter activities of the organization inhis immediate district, but in privacyand secrecy he is a part of a still morepotent and valued organization, or groupof organizations, unknown to the publicbut serving the public through specialactivities of a serious nature.

And if any should say that such aform of organization might be detrimental or dangerous to the welfare of a country or people because of the possibilities which such secrecy provide,again you may point with pride and joyto the fact that in the whole history of the Rosicrucian organization and in itsentire record before the court of man, ithas never been found guilty of disseminating the l east destructive thought and

has never even been accused of doinganything other than building for bettercitizenship, greater peace, more powerin the lives of individuals, and greaterglory to God. This untarnished recordcovering many centuries is the best

guarantee of its high and noble purposesand the efficiency of the methods it uses. The fact that it has become a large andsuccessful organization with increasing

prosperity, increasing power, and increasing happiness in its own organization, is also a guarantee that it knowshow to bring peace, power, prosperity,and happiness into the lives of its followers. Its success must be through thesuccess of its members and this must rebound to the benefit of all who are loyalto its principles.

 T IS SAID that the greatSphinx in Egypt will nottell its story and, therefore, it is the great riddleof the universe. But thegreat Sphinx has toldmuch of its story in recent years and today theSphinx is not as much a

riddle as we thought it was. Eachyear brings new revelations in regardto its origin, its purposes, and its mysteries. There is one great riddle, however, which is still unanswered, althoughwe are coming closer to an understanding each year of our lives. This riddlerelates to the nature of the great powerto create and materialize things in ourlives through the use of our minds.

And, after all, we may find that weare wrong in thinking that this greatpower is controlled and directed by ourminds. That our minds aid and assistin turning the thoughts of our concep

tions into concrete, material things isundisputed, but the mind may not be thecontrolling factor, but only an incidental process.

If man was created in the image of God, he was created with all of themagnificent, omnipotent, creative powerwhich God possesses. M an’s achievements in the past seem to indicate thathis power to create is unlimited andthat his mastership over the material

things of the world is gradually enlarging and Widening in scope until hemay truly become the master of all thathe surveys. Still this tells us nothing of the nature of this power.

As we look about us, wherever wemay be, we see concrete evidences of thought pictures turned into actualities.I see before me now a chair, comfortable, beautiful, and in many ways awork of art. It is unlike anything thatcan be found in the ruins or relics of ancient lands and ancient times. It isa modern thing, common-place, universal, but, nevertheless, so much a partof our present lives that it seems to bean indisputed necessity. Where did itcome from? Not this particular chairnor any other chair, but all chairs? Cananyone question the statement that thechair I am looking at, or the chair youmay be looking at, is anything else thana thought materialized into the concreteactuality? The same with the desk, the

table, the lamp, the rugs on the floor,the pictures on the wall, the roof, thevery building itself? And look at theshoes on our feet, the clothes on ourbody. Think of the pen with which thisis written, the printing machine withwhich it will be printed, the paper uponwhich it is printed, the railroad trainsthat will carry the magazine to yourhome, the flying machines, the submarines, and even the most simple littlething like the ink in the ink well and

the water that runs from the faucet inthe sink. Each and every one of thesethings is personalized, individualized,concrete thought transmuted out of therealm of mental conception into a world

of material actuality.An old Rosicrucian proverb says that“What man dares to conceive, he willhave the power to create." Have youever thought of the unlimited possibilities of mental conception? The time ispast when one dares to say that thecomplex or simple and weird conceptsof man are beyond material realization.Is it not possible that the human mindis limited only to what it can create, ormay it not be possible that the humanmind can conceive only of that whichis wholly conceived or in the mind of theCosmic as a thing to be in the future?Still, conceiving of things and havingthem brought into realization in no wisetells us what the power is that bridgesthe gap or covers the intangible spacebetween concept and product.

What is it then that enables man totransmute his thoughts from the castleof imagery to the laboratory of productand “whence comes this power?"

It is only half a truth to say that thepower is that of the muscles in the hu

man body and that the products of manare the result of physical energy,exercised by his physical prowess.Before the muscles begin to workand before the labor of the physicalbody enters into the material creationof any object the concept itself must bebrought out of its gallery of images andprojected into the material world. Whatis the light, what is the energy thatcarries them out of their places in thebook of concepts and inspires them intolife?

 The only answer thus far given tous is that this power is a psychic power,a Cosmic power dwelling silently andunquickened in the body of each of us.And we find from experience in lifethat until this dormant power is releasedand directed in its manifestations man isbut a dreamer of dreams and a maker of pictures. In the activities of his unlimited imagination he builds and piecestogether the desires or hopes of his lifebut these pass on into oblivion and become monuments of mental inefficiency

unless the imaging power of the Cosmicis quickened in his being and directedto the re-creation of his concepts.

 The results in my own life and thelives of those with whom I have come

in contact since joining the Rosicrucianorganization many years ago haveproved to me that there is in each oneof us a great Cosmic creative powerthat will not create or will not directand manifest itself until it is properlyreleased, properly quickened, and properly directed.  This is what is knownas the methods of psychic development.It is not development of the power, forthe power is already of an unlimited nature within each one of us and nothingthat we can do can increase that powerfor it is as great in the least of us as

in the greatest of us. But like any othergreat energy that is at man's disposal,it must be intelligently understood andthen correctly directed and applied.When man crosses the threshold of thedoorway to the greatest electrical powerplant in the world and stands in the center of the enormous revolving dynamoswhose energy is carried to thousandsof homes and buildings to maintain andoperate gigantic machinery and producegreat light and heat, he is not in thepresence of any greater power than that

which resides Within his own being. But just as the energy from these dynamosmust be directed along certain lines inorder to reach certain points and produce certain results, and just as thisenergy must be controlled by switchesand released intelligently and at theproper time and in the proper manner,so must this great power of the Cosmicbe guided and directed with special intelligence.

In all of man’s creating he has notbeen able to discover, invent, or produce a chemical, or other form of en

ergy, that will equal the energy to befound in the least important part of hisbody. For instance, man has never beenable to duplicate a power that wouldrush to an open wound of the fingerand re-create new tissue and heal thewound. Y et the same power that manifests itself in this small and commonplace incident of life is but a part of his body and which he can draw uponabundantly and quicken to produce

still greater results in the world abouthim. But he must know how to do this,for the power within him can be usedoutside of his body only when it is controlled by the same intelligent understanding as controls it when it is usedinside of the body. Cosmic intelligencewill guide the vital energies of the human body in their natural processes,but it has been given unto man’s willpower and human mind to control anddirect the still greater energy of theCosmic that flows through his body andmanifests itself in the creative processesaround him.

Study, experimentation, a careful appreciation, and a realization of naturalprinciples, correct guidance, and a sympathetic understanding on the part of 

instructors, will enable any man orwoman to accomplish the great feats of creation in the material world. Whatever may be the concept in the mind of man it can be brought into materialrealization through proper knowledgeand guidance. W hy does man thendwell in want and continue to dream of the things he should have, while his lifeis filled with suffering and sorrow andthose dependent upon him plead fornecessities? All of the material worldis precisely what man has made it andman is master of all that he surveys,

for he has made it all and it cannothave a power greater than its maker.Every material thing that contacts usin life is a slave unto the mind of man,but if man exercises no power over itit will rise up and enslave him. Desiringthe things of life, hoping for them, seek

ing for them, affirming the need of them, will not create them, and manhas no right to depend upon the creations of others for the things he needsunless he in turn is creating for othersthe things they need. Until man becomes a producer and a creator of theconcepts of his mind, he is a victim of barter and exchange and a loser in thegame of life.

 There is no time or space whichlimits man in his successful dominanceof his immediate conditions. The timeto conceive of the things we need isnow and the time to bring them out of embryonic conception into full grownrealization is now. Until man learnshow to do these things he is but thesleeping infant of the man God created

him. Man must arouse himself from theslumber and quicken his being into fullpower if he would master and empowerthe things he requires. The study of theprocess is simple. The instructions arefascinating. The ways are delightful.

 The results are sure. Loyalty, devotion,sympathy, are the qualities which aidin mastership. The Rosicrucians haveoffered the knowledge to you and theyask in return only devotion and patience. Long have you slept in weaknessand want, slow must be your naturalattainment of mastership; but in this

very slowness of procedure lies surenessof action and from your patience willcome the rich reward of more perfectunderstanding and this will bring you arealization of your likeness unto theCreator of all things.

The Present Business DepressionSOME IMPORTANT TRUTHS REGARDING

 THE NATIONAL CONDITIONS

HAVE been very reluctant to make a state

ment of any kind inour monthly magazineregarding the presentbusiness and financialdepression thr o ughoutNorth America exceptto have called attention

some months ago to the fact that a nation and a country have a cycle of existence like unto a human cycle, and thiscycle is divided into periods of sevenyears as with the human cycle. Everyseven years the LInited States of America has had a change in its financialstatus. This change usually falls inwhat would be the eighth year or reallythe beginning of a new seven-year period. Just before the crux of the situation there is a low depression and thisis always preceded by a period of extreme prosperity. Those who wish totrace back the financial depressions of the last fifty or one hundred years willfind the cycle very definitely indicated. This fact at once takes the entire matter out of politics and puts it squarelyinto harmony with the human equations

and the human relationships with Cosmic principles.

 Too much is being said at the presenttime regarding political influences andthe relationship of these influences uponthe business depressions. Perhaps themost absurd of these accusations andpostulations is that President Hooverand his party are responsible for thepresent conditions, or at least show thatthey are incapable of relieving the conditions. Persons who make this statement appear to be absolutely ignorant of 

the fact that such a depression in business and finances as exists at the pres

ent time cannot be created suddenly orin any short period of time and thatthe real beginning of the present conditions was in manifestation before President Hoover was elected to his highoffice. He is in the unfortunate positionof having been elected President of theLInited States at the beginning of a period of important economic changes. Hemust, therefore, bear the burden of having this unpleasant combination of conditions existing in the country duringthe first years of his administration andassume all the responsibility and blamefor matters taking their course, regardless of anything that he may attempt todo to improve conditions. Business andfinancial conditions could not have beenany better than they are if anyone elsehad been elected President of the UnitedStates, and, of course, if some radical orextremist had been elected to office thepresent conditions might have beenmade much worse through vain attemptsto revolutionize existing principles. Iam presenting no brief in favor of thepresent chief executive of the United

States nor for his party. W e are notconcerned in politics whatsoever. Butthe fact of the matter is that these periodical conditions come upon t he country and will continue to come regardlessof the person or party directing the affairs of this government. W e shouldalways feel fortunate, however, if a conservative is in charge of affairs duringsuch a period.

regarding present conditions and futureconditions not known to the averageperson and perhaps not known to eventhe chief officers of our government. W ewill, therefore, set aside momentarily ourstandard of refraining from commentingupon national affairs and state what weknow.

In the first place, the present business depression and financial conditionsin the United States are not concentrated or centered in the United Statesexclusively. In other words, similar conditions exist in Canada and some othercountries. It is really more of an international situation than a national one,and the moment we realize this we alsorealize that local politics in any countryhave little bearing upon the matter.

Leaving aside, therefore, the Cosmiccycles and their subtle influences, whichbring about certain effects upon business and finance in various countries invarious periods, let us analyze whatthese influences have actually created inthe Western world. In the first place,the Cosmic influences throughout 1927,1928 and 1929 were those which tendedto bring an unusual opportunity for success in business and general prosperity. Those who are unfamiliar with economic laws and principles are alwaysthe ones who misunderstand and, there

fore, misuse the Cosmic influences fortheir own good. The result is inevitablewhen the Cosmic favors a nation withinfluences of prosperity. Those who donot understand the working of the lawsimmediately proceed to misjudge the effect of these prosperity influences andbelieve that their own abilities and theirown power and their own efforts havebrought the increased prosperity intotheir life, and they further make the mistake of believing that it will continue,regardless of how they live or think oract. The result of such an attitude onthe part of those who did not understand was that millions in the so-calledworking classes, which includes everyactive person in the business world, assumed that the prosperity influenceswould continue and that there wouldbe a continuous rise in the wage scaleand a continuous rise in the income frombusiness and a continuous rise in thepurchasing power of the country. This

led manufacturers to over-produce, andit led purchasers to over-purchase andover-contract, for not only possiblenecessities but the luxuries of life. Absolutely little or no thought was givento the sound economic principle of saving or laying anything aside during thesunny periods for the proverbial andinevitable rainy day. Unfortunately thepresent Cosmic cycle was preceded bythe Great World W ar, during whichtime the wage scale in America took arapid rise and assumed artificial and abnormal values. These values could notcontinue indefinitely and most certainlycould not continue to rise withoutreaching a breaking point. A wave of prosperity followed closely after theartificial rise of values, and those who

did not understand the law believed thatthe conditions would indefinitely continue, and that there would be no breaking point at any time.

National figures and statistics showeven in such unimportant matters as thepurchase of radio sets, pianos, and automobiles, that an almost disregard of economic principles allowed men andwomen in all walks of life to buy orcontract for many articles or manythings beyond their financial possibilities. The increase of wages would notallow for a large percentage of savings

because “living expenses’’ increased inproportion to the increase of wages. Theworking man who complained that hehad to have a large wage in order tomeet the living expenses did not seemto realize that his own wage and thewage of all other working persons wereresponsible for the increased costs forliving. Therefore, a continuous increaseof wages could never have arrivedwhere the wage-earner would receivemore than he actually needed to enjoylife and could accordingly put aside a

certain percentage as savings. Yet hehoped that this would be so, and inpractically every line of effort the working man periodically demanded morewages in the hope of reaching beyondthe balance line. Each increase, however, brought temptations for greaterexpenditures and this increasing purchasing power tempted the manufacturerto over-produce.

Suddenly the saturation point in purchasing was reached in certain lines.

 There was nothing left for the manufacturers to do but to take advantage of this situation and do what they hadplanned to do for a number of years,namely, attempt to reduce the wage

scale. For the last five years groups of the largest manufacturing organizationsin America representing billions of dollars of production in many lines haveheld conferences regarding the possibility of wage reduction. In each of these secret conclaves the discussion always ended with a realization that theinevitable result of a reduction wouldbe a “walk-out" on the part of the employees who would “strike” and protestagainst any wage reduction. Such atie-up on the part of employees would

hurt the manufacturing industries if itoccurred at a time when it was necessary to maintain production at a normal rate. Therefore, no attempt wasmade to reduce wages and the increasing of the scale of wages broughtbenefit to neither the corporations northe employees.

When the sudden drop of purchasingpower occurred and resulted in the rapidfilling of warehouses with unsold andunwanted products, the larger manufacturers throughout the country suddenlyrealized that this was an opportunityto anticipate the inevitable breakdownthat was close at hand, and bring aboutan economic adjustment. These business men were not thinking in this manner without Cosmic direction, for, as Ihave said above, the whole situation isthe result of Cosmic law, and when theCosmic prepares to bring about a changein any condition it must work throughhuman channels and must urge or inspire human beings to do certain thingsin order to work out the law.

Big business, therefore, decided that

with an over-production on its hands itwas possible to shut down factories andmanufacturing plants and temporarilylay off its employees until an adjustmentin the wage scale could be made. Thisis practically what is taking place during these summer and fall months of 1930. While it is a sorrowful lessonand a serious problem to millions of persons it is also one of the healthiestsigns for economic soundness in thefuture. The many thousands in various

lines of employment who are now unemployed will be eventually put backto work in their same lines but at alower wage scale. W e know that amongthe unthinking workers there is a feeling

of unrest and a spirit of challenge whichexpresses itself in the words, “I Will stayout of work to the bitter end rather thango back at lower wages, because I cannot work for less and meet the livingexpenses.” These persons fail to realizethat if the entire wage scale is reduceda small fraction or a large fraction thatall the living expenses will be reducedaccordingly, and that in the end theworking man and woman will have justas much benefit from his salary as hehas had in the past.

 The truth of all this is shown in thefact that already there has been a reduction in many lines of living necessities. Clothing has been greatly reduced.Many food stuffs have been reduced inprice and rents have been reduced inmany cities and large areas of the country. Further reductions in the cost of the necessities of life will inevitably takeplace during October, November, andDecember. Even in the luxuries of lifeas, for instance, in the radio and automobile fields, the reduction in prices hasbeen large and frequent and will continue to be frequent during the nexttwelve months.

 The crisis will come before the winter sets in those states of North America,where the winter months are a seriousproblem to working people. Many whoare now obstinate about returning to employment at reduced wages will beforced to do so because of winter conditions, and as they yield to the lowerscale a lower scale will gradually be established and more and more will adjustthemselves to it and accept the condi

tions. This will bring about a gradualreturn to employment before the beginning of winter and during the wintermonths there will be a rapid return tosteady employment and production willbegin again in practically every important line. The reduction in the pricesfor living necessities and in rents willlikewise continue and the whole crisiswill end with a sound adjustment inthe employment field and, therefore, inthe financial field, and we will be in abetter economic condition and really

more prosperous than we have been fora long time.

Another mistaken idea that seems tohave crept into the consciousness of theuninformed working person is that the

present depression is the forerunner of sections of this country and even inCanada, and yet the most positive of those who proclaim the coming of warcannot even name the countries thatmight be involved or the principles thatwould be fought for. These personsare merely talking irrationally and absurdly. Our diplomatic relations between various countries have nothingwhatever to do with the present financial depression and the Cosmic has nowar written in its plans. There is nota nation in the world today that is financially or economically prepared for waror wants war, and there is not even oneradical diplomat in any of the largercountries of the world who would thinkof saying that a war of any kind wouldhelp the present situation. Everythingis to be gained through peace andeverything to be lost through war, andevery large country in the world todayrealizes this more keenly than they haveever realized it before. W ar is alwaysa result of a condition of mind, and wartalk, if continued long enough and in

 judiciously, will result in unpleasant conditions. There is nothing in the worldthat will prevent war quicker thanthoughts of peace and harmonious ad

 justment to changing conditions accepted by hearty cooperation on the part of every sane and sensible citizen. It is afact that the larger corporations andthe greatest capitalists are sufferinglosses at the present time in the sameratio as is the working man or the laboring man, and the salvation of the entiresituation lies in peaceful and coopera 

tive adjustment. Every organization,every group of individuals, every society, even our own organization of AMORC, has had to take its share of losses during the present conditions, butwe know it is an adjustment that is taking place and that these losses will beturned to good account in the future.

 The greatest mistake that has beenmade by the average person in the lastfew years, in addition to over-buying

and contracting for more luxuries andnecessities than was warranted, was themistake of foolish speculative investment. This, too, was a result of a wrongunderstanding of temporary prosperity.

Instead of investing soundly in real estate, or in homes, or in stable things thatcould not be wiped away by a merechalk mark on a black board in abroker’s office or by a raising of a handon the floor in the exchange in WallStreet, they invested their savings andeven gambled their present and futureincomes in invisible, intangible things,such as the rise and fall of fictitiousvaluations. The craze of prosperitytempted many thousands into thinkingthat the day had come when poor persons could become millionaires or poor

become rich quickly or suddenly without earning or deserving what they weregoing to get. Such persons became madas with a delirious fever or a form of insanity. To imagine that this couldcontinue without reaching a breakingpoint and an adjustment taking place isto think that there is no law or systemto the various important things of life.

 The sooner that every man andwoman who works, labors, or producesin exchange for an income, begins torealize that by thinking constructively,agreeing cooperatively with the adjustment that is taking place and willinglyaccepts the reduction in wages and returns to work in a happy frame of mind,the sooner will the crisis be over. Ittakes time to adjust such tremendousproblems as have become involved inthis situation and no one man or conclave of men in any one city can cometogether and solve or complete the ad justment by the passage of some lawsor the proclamation of some ruling. Ithas  to be slow, careful, and universalin all parts of the country at one timeby every man and woman who is involved in the whole scheme, and thatmeans every man and woman who isdependent upon business'-conditions inany form. This is the truth of the entire situation, and we predict that before the winter is over the soundness of our attitude in this regard and the correctness of our statements will be mademanifest.

The Missing Link 

 THE MY STIC FINDS IT WHEN SCIENCE FAILS

ERH APS we were allfascinated in the storiesabout evolution by themysterious hunt forthe strange missinglink, and perhaps thatimaginery missing linkin the animal kingdomis more responsible forthe interest taken

in the subject of evolution than we maysuspect. However, while science hasfailed to find the missing link, the mysticsoon learns where it is and how to proveits existence. This is not because the

mystic uses some magic wand to discover what science cannot find but because science came to a false conclusionregarding the nature of that missing linkand has been seeking for a realizationof its false conception. The mystic, onthe other hand, had no conception of what the missing link might be and,therefore, was open to the truth of itspresence when he came face to face withit.

 Too often in our search for the thingsof life or the solution of some of themysteries of our existence we speculate

as to what the missing thing or hiddenthing may be and create a fictitious answer and then go seeking for it in vain.W e build up out of our imaginatiion aghost-like answer to our question andthen forever chase after the missingghost and try to lay it. The real answer, the real thing we may be seekingmay stand alongside of us or be close tous day after day, but we do not recognize it because we have a false conception, an artificial thing in our mindswhich we are seeking for and never find.

 The idea of a missing link implies theexistence of a chain unbroken except forone link. This thought reduces thewhole problem to one link that will connect the rest of the chain and make ita continuous thing of unbroken sequenceand relationship.

In the theory of evolution the brokenchain consists of the evolution of man,each stage of which was supposed toconstitute a link in the chain, and theone link that connects the purely animalexistence with the beginning of a purelyhuman existence appeared to be missing. The false assumption in the whole

process of reasoning was that the stagesof evolution were material stages representing the material changes in man’sphysical body. With this assumptionthe missing link would have to be a linkof material change in the physical body.

Of course, if you eliminate the ideathat the chain of man’s evolution everhad any beastly link in it you immediately eliminate the imaginary missinglink of a physical nature. How cameman to think that there ever was a timewhen man’s nature and form werepurely beast-like? Because there are

some points of similarity between thebody of some animals and the body of man? Upon this sort of reasoning weshould seek to find the missing link whenthe orange became a grapefruit, or theqrapefruit became the orange, or bothbecame a lemon. The real reason of such a search lies in the fact that manexpresses a part of the time a beast-likenature in his thinking, acting, and conduct throughout life. But granting thatthere is a part of man's nature that isakin to that of many animals this does

not prove that he himself evolved fromthe lower species. The other half of man's nature which is not animal-likeis God-like, and W e should spend agreat deal of time trying to find themissing link which would indicate what

occurred when man ceased to be whollyGod-like and became only partially soby adding the animal nature to his being.

It is a fact, however, that man is dualin his instincts and nature. He is partially beastly and partially Godly. Thecombination of instincts makes of him ahuman being, for he is neither sufficientlyGod-like to be a god, nor beast-likeenough to be an animal of the specieslower than man. Looking at the twonatures of man, then, as two distinct

halves of expression, the mystic discovered the link that unites the two andmakes the man a distinct species of thekingdom known as human. It is thislink that binds the Divine and spiritualnature of God with the lower instinctsof the animal kingdom that really constitutes a more fascinating link for research and a more missing element sofar as tangible evidence is concernedthan the missing link of physical evolution.

What can this missing link be like?It must be a subtle transcendental some

thing that defies material inspection orphysical distinction and yet harmonizeswith both natures of man. It must beable to attune itself with the spiritualside of man’s being and at the sametime attune itself with the physical animal nature of man. It must afford ameans of connection between the twoand it must be continuously active andessentially a vital part of man’s composition, spiritually, mentally, and physically.

Can it be the soul? Probably not,

for the soul is the spiritual side of man’snature and the link cannot be the half of his existence but something that connects the two halves and coordinatesthem. Can it be the ego? This, too, isimpossible, since the ego is essentially adevelopment of the soul nature of thespiritual intellect and spiritual personality of the soul. The only other possibility is that it is the psychic body orpsychic nature of man. Taking this asa starting point for our investigation we

soon discover that there is no other element about the nature of man that soreadily attunes itself with both naturesof man and blends so agreeably withboth of the spiritual and animal instinctsof man like the psychic consciousness.

Our further investigation shows thatthis psychic link between the two natures of man is something that is createdin him at the time of birth and remainsmore or less dormant until it is quickened into greater activity by the conscious realization of its evidences andthe consistent application of its powersto function. W e discover, therefore,through experimentation, that thislink can be strengthened and givengreater opportunity to carry on its essential activities with the result that man

becomes a more perfect blending of thehighest instincts of both sides of hisnature.

It is common for the average personto think that any animal instincts in ournature are objectionable and should beeliminated, and that the most perfectman would be that one who has mostcompletely subdued all of the animal instincts which he has inherited. This isa false conclusion and is responsible forthe vain attempts on the part of manypersons to try and live a pious life, sonearly God-like that the animal nature

of his existence is completely lost andnegated. Not only is this a vain andfutile attempt but even if anyone couldbe successful in the attempt the resultwould not be in accordance with naturallaw. Man was created to live uponearth as a physical animal being andnot to live as a spiritual, ethereal, Divinebeing wholly disassociated from the animal kingdom. So long as a man is bornwith a physical body and with the essential elements of an animal nature hismission in life is to live as the highestdevelopment in the animal kingdom andexpress the highest nature of animal lifewithout in any way submerging thespiritual side of his nature.

 The highest instincts of the animalkingdom are not all of a brutal, uncouth, unmoral and degenerate nature.Some of the highest instincts in manare essentially those of the animal kingdom and are good and agreeable withspiritual laws. Perhaps the most fundamental instinct of the animal nature is

that of self-preservation. It may havea tinge of egotism, vanity, or self-glorification in it, but it does tend topreserve that which God created andto assist in furthering the aims and mis

sion of one's physical life. Many of the wonderful achievements makingman’s civilization are inspired throughthe instinct of self-preservation. Thisaccounts for homes, hamlets, and communities of residents and the mutual interests, and, in fact, we might say thatall of the principles of civics are foundedupon this high instinct of self-preservation. Many of the highly developedmoral laws of man are the result of animal instincts. Those who study the lowtype of human nature often find thatman is given to certain practices andindulgences of the flesh which the loweranimals hesitate to indulge in throughsome instinct that makes them sense therepugnance or repulsiveness of suchacts. Many of man’s ethical principlesare based upon his inner sense of theinherited instinct of the animal nature.On the other hand, it must be admittedthat many uncouth, unmoral, and degenerate practices of man are the resultof base animal instincts. Through theinheritance of the flesh man acquiresboth good and bad instincts from the

animal kingdom. Through his spiritualinheritance he acquires those instinctsand tendencies which are good andbeautiful. It is man’s privilege, andshould be his self-adopted duty to purgehimself of the base animal instincts, tostrengthen the good instincts inheritedthrough the flesh, and strengthen andpractice the spiritual tendencies of hishigher nature. This purging and cleansing, strengthening and improving, of hiscombination of natures constitutes thereal process of evolution through which

man has been passing since the dawnof civilization. The missinq link, therefore, which permits the exchange of impressions between the two natures andholds each of them bound in communication with each other, constitutes a reallink in the real process of evolution.

How foolish it is, then, for science toseek this strange link in the fossils,bones, and relics of long obliterated and

forgotten species of animals! How foolish it is to think that materialistic sciencewill ever find this strange link eitherunder the microscope or in gross remainsof forgotten races. This link is so close

to them that they do not see it, for nothing can be closer to us than that whichis part of our nature. Thus by turningthe eye-sight inwardly and by seekingwithin they will find not only this greatkey to the real process of man’s evolution but all the keys to the mysteriesof life. The Rosicrucians offer us thekeys and even tell us how to use them,but it is up to every one of us to takethese golden keys and unlock the fettersthat bind the rose on the cross of manand in the heart of the rose find life revealed. One by one the golden keysmust open up the chambers of knowledge and revelation. W e must keep onpassing from chamber to chamber of knowledge until we come to the greatchamber where the missing link resides.By flinging wide open the door to thischamber and allowing the psychic linkto express itself freely and function asGod decreed, we immediately start theprocess of purging, cleansing, andstrengthening the more formidable,mighty, potent forces of our beast nature and attune ourselves with the high

est principles of life. From out of thischamber will come forth wisdom thatis mighty in its influence and all of thebeneficent blessings of life, presenting tous the opportunities to live a life of greater usefulness, greater success, andgreater happiness.

 Through the simple methods of theRosicrucian Fraternity and through itstime-honored and aged methods it offers, kindly and in true brotherly spirit,to give us these keys and help us to usethem practically and efficiently. The

achievements of the Rosicrucians in thepast stand like monuments of testimonyto the efficiency of our methods and theworthiness of our purposes, and he whoseeks to unlock the mysteries of lifeand use them for the good of all willfind no more fascinating and helpfulkeys than those which are hidden inthe rose on the cross.

The Christ Spirit

WHAT IT IS AND WHERE TO SEEK FOR IT

E SUS said to the multitudes that He had beenwith the world sincethe beginning of timeand He said also, “Lo,I am with you always.” This is, inbrief, the essence of His statement regarding Himself as the

Christ. These words constitute a positive definite statement of the mortalityof the Christ spirit.

For many centuries the devout Christian held the belief that the Christ spiritcame to the world with the birth of 

 Jesus and that later it ascended intoHeaven and continued to remain in thespiritual realm. It was only after amore careful and analytical study of H iswonderful teachings that even theChristians came to realize that thespirit of Christ was something that hadno beginning with the birth of a humanform and never left the earth with theascension of His body. However wemay look upon the incarnation of thatChrist spirit in one human form for atime, we cannot fail to realize in thebroader sense that the Christ spirit is

something that cannot be confined tothe body of one individual. The Christ spirit is the projected con

sciousness of God into the hearts of allbeings. It is a Divine consciousnesstranslated into human expression andlying dormant within each one of us whohas not allowed it to awaken and comeinto sublime expression. W e must seekfor it, therefore, not in the spiritual realmabove us nor in H eavenly or Cosmic

consciousness of God, but in the veryDivine consciousness that resides in eachone of us.

 The spirit of Christ in us constantlyattempts to become the dominant consciousness that resides in each one of us.

 The spirit of Christ in us constantlyattempts to become the dominant consciousness of our being, but by our ownacts and especially by our own thinking we imprison this spirit and restrainit in its power and prevent its fullnessof manifestation.

 To those who have discovered theChristian spirit within and have becomeaware of its marvelous power and have

allowed it to quicken their outer consciousness and speak with the still smallvoice, the Christian spirit becomes a potent factor in their human affairs.

What constitutes the real regeneration of man is the quickening of theChristian spirit within and allowing thisspirit to be the real self and the realgovernor and director of human existence. It is like unto an awakening of the sleeping captain of the ship on theseas and allowing him to take the wheelinstead of the incompetent and uninformed seamen who are not inspired

with the Divine wisdom and omnipotentknowledge. From the moment that thisimprisoned and silent spirit of Christbecomes the dominant consciousness of the being, new life, new power, and Cos-.nic attunement infuses the body andconsciousness and the human being is reborn and comes in contact with eternallife.

It is the Christian spirit within whichconstantly urges the outer self to do that

which is right and just and fair. It isthe Christ consciousness within thatknows all of the facts of the universe, isaware of all of the universal principles,and is competent to judge all beings andto direct all human relationships withfairness and justice to all. It is theChristian consciousneos and the spiritwithin the breast of man that leads himon to noble thoughts and noble acts andstays him in his steps toward evil.

When the spirit of Christ is awakened and by the common consent of allthe faculties of man is given dominationover the physical self man becomeshappy, healthy, and developes into theliving image of God as was intended inthe beginning.

W e should not seek, therefore, thespirit of Christ in a church or a piousperson, nor should we look for this greatspirit in the advice and counsel of another. W e must look for it exclusivelywithin ourselves.

 The object of all sacred instructionand of all religious guidance is to quickenthe holy spirit in man, awaken the Christconsciousness and bring about re-birth,regeneration, and salvation. In thegreat work of our Rosicrucian organization, the great truths of life are not

given to us. much less sold to us, assome say who venture to criticize ourorganization because of its physical andbusiness-like methods and requirements. Truth can neither be given, nor sold,nor dispensated by one person to another, by any means or by any process.

 That which is true and constitutes thegreat true principles of life must be bornwithin us through experiences andthrough the awakening of the Christsoirit and consciousness. All that theRosicrucians can do is to teach you howto find the truth and how to avoid theevil and untrue. The greatest lessonsfrom the great Master of our organization do not contain a single word orthought that can ever constitute thetruth to you until after you have experienced it and found it within theChrist snirit of your being. You cannot be tauqht the truth of life, nor cananyone tell you the truth of your ownbeing, and in this manner transfer toyou their truth so that they will becomeyour truths. The greatest message that

Christ gave His disciples and that haspassed down through the ages as amiracle or revelation cannot become atruth to you until it awakens in youa response and an experience that becomes a living truth in its fulfillment.

If man were purely a spiritual beingwithout the physical body and the limitations of a mortal mind, each beingwould be a living Christ spirit and aliving truth. But the flesh of man hasits weaknesses and the mortal mind itslimitations and in man's egotism andvanity the outer self has imprisonedthe Christ spirit and tried to rule anddominate over that which is immortal.Hence, the finite part of man imprisonsthe infinite, and the mortal part of manrules the immortal. Man thereby lives

in error and in sin and ignorance. Themortal mind of one man cannot passtruth to the mortal mind of another, fortruth cannot be of the mortal mind butof the immortal. The great wisdom thatconnects the truth of the ages is not anelement that is resident within the finitepart of man and therefore cannot betransferred by the finite self to the finiteconsciousness of another self. Truthmust be born within and find expressionfrom within as a light within a bulbradiates and outshines the transparent

mortal body of its shell.When truth is developed within andthe Christ spirit allowed to express itand experience it, the finite man becomeshumble and submissive and all his acts,as well as all his thoughts, are guidedby the Divine judgment and highest inspiration. This frees the body of sinand ignorance and gives vitality to thebeing and immortality to the consciousness.

Seek ye, therefore, for the truth inyour own self. Harken to the wordsand advice of those who have foundtruth and let them guide your steps andpoint out the path of experience thatwill reveal the truth. “living the truth brings life eternal forever and ever more.” Thus he proclaimed, over thirteen hundred years before the birth of Christ, the principlesof the Christ spirit within revealing itself as truth and enabling us t o live intruth and thereby gain regeneration andbecome eternally immortal in the life of God.

 Jew and Gentile, Roman Catholic orProtestant, Buddhist and Mohammedan, and all others of all religious beliefs have the Christ spirit within andcan live in the truth of this spirit and

become regenerated, immortal beings inthe sight of God.

Self ContemplationAN ANCIENT PRACTICE OF MODERN VALUE

NE of the ancient andmost universal of sacredpractices was that of meditation and contemplation. It is something

which has become lost tothe modern world andthis is regrettable indeed. W e have become

accustomed to allowing others and evenmechanical devices to do the thinkingthat we should do, and the investigatingthat we should do. If we have any occasion to be concerned about our physical bodies we consult a physician andlet him contemplate upon our condition.If we want to know something about ourpersonal affairs we consult an attorney

or some other individual. If we want toknow precisely about our heart beat orabout our weight or about the functioning of some other organs of our bodywe depend upon mechanical contraptions to give us the indications.

Self-analysis, self-examination, andself-contemplation are extremely interesting and profitable things for each oneof us. If we do not have time nor theinterest to occasionally cast off the material world around us and sit down inrelaxed meditation upon the wonderful,beautiful, and marvelous things of God

and nature, we may at least find some incentive of a personal nature in takinga little time for self-contemplation.

Everyone who is advancing on thepath in all Oriental lands finds selfcontemplation a very valuable asset.

 Those who have not indulged in this sortof thinking as a regular practice mayfind a surprise and an interesting storyby beginning the practice and openingup a new world of adventure.

 The proper procedure is to take half an hour at least once a week and retire

into absolute silence within the homeor somewhere out-doors where one canbe undisturbed and where the attentionwill not be distracted. Even sitting ina soft light or absolute darkness will

prove valuable. After becoming relaxedand comfortable proceed to direct yourthoughts inwardly upon your own self,or, in other words, upon the true inner-self. T ry to make an exact and honestanalysis of yourself. During this contemplation and analysis the followingquestions or subjects for examinationshould come to your mind:

W hy am I who I am? W hy have Ithe name, the family heritage, and theblood of my ancestors in me? Whatpurpose does this background serve me?

What advantage am I taking of the goodand strong points of that background?What are the strong points of my character as I would judge them if I sawthem in someone else? What are theweak ones? What are the points of mycharacter or personality which arepleasing to others or would be pleasingto me if I found them in others? Andwhich are the undesirable ones? Whattraits or personal habits have I that Iwould not admire in another? Whattraits or habits have I that my bestfriends would not suspect in me? Andwhy do I have them? What personalprivate things do I do that are not noble, wholesome, or dignified.

 T ry this process of self-analysis bygiving a little time to it once a week of even ten or fifteen minutes each fewdays when you are alone. You will findyour own self to be the greatest worldfor adventure and discovery that youhave ever contacted.

Perhaps you will find a stronger self within than you have suspected, or perhaps you will find a weak self within.

Stopping PainA FEW SUGGESTIONS FOR THOSE WHO SEEK TO

ALLEVIATE SUFFERING.

NE of the most  common expressions usedby those who seekhelp of any physician

or of the Master of any one of our lodgesor branches of workpertains to the stopping of pain or thealleviation of physical

suffering.

It seems that the average human being can stand almost any test of endurance or any strain except that of pain.Even when the pain is mild and of brief duration it is one of the most annoyingsensations known to the flesh and oneof the most aggrevating and, therefore,

disconcerting. Every physician andevery nurse knows that the first pleaon the part of those who suffer is thatsomething should be done immediatelyto alleviate the pain. The average unthinking or uneducated person veryoften looks upon the pain as all there isto the physical condition to be corrected,and if the pain itself is stopped no further attenti on is given to the real conditions existing in the body.

We all know, however, that pain isnot a condition to be treated and corrected by looking upon it as somethingapart from other conditions in the body. To seek, therefore, to merely end thepain and suffering is to approach a moreserious condition with a false understanding and to disregard one of N ature’s most kind principles.

Nature has especially provided theanimal body with nerves and with nervecenters, which are connected with sensitive areas of the brain in order that

man may feel pain, and the purpose of the sensation of pain is to inform manthat something is wrong in his body orthat he is violating some natural law.

Pain is not, therefore, a condition, butmerely the warning or signal of a condition. and to treat this signal as thoughit were the whole cause of the conditionis to make a serious mistake.

I remember hearing the I mperat or  give a lecture several years ago in Chicago when he very humorously pointedout to the audience in the large auditorium of that city the real significance of pain. He called attention to the factthat in every city there were certain jewelry houses, banks, and stores, whichcontained a large amount of very

valuable and costly material and whichhad a certain form of burglar alarm installed throughout the premises. Thissystem of burglar alarms consisted of a network of wires connected with everydoor and every window and with everyvault or safe. The moment any intruder attempted to open a door or window after the store had been closed forthe day a large bell attached to the outside wall of the building would begin toring and would continue to ring violently. This alarm signal was not for thepurpose of frightening the intruder

away, but to call the attention of thepassers-by or the police to the fact thatthe safetv of  t he pr emi ses had been vi o lated and that somethina should be doneat once to protect the place against anyfurther injury or intrusion.

 The Imperator said that we wouldsmile at and deride any police officer orintelligent citizen who, in passing by abuilding where such an alarm was ringing would send for a ladder and climb

up to the ringing bell and proceed tostuff rags and paper around to preventit from ringing, or who would performa surgical operation and sever the electrical connection that enabled the bellto ring. The idea of stopping the bellfrom ringing with the hope that thiswould end the serious condition that existed inside of the store is certainlyridiculous. Y et this is the very thingthat is often done by those who takedrugs or some forms of medicine to alleviate pain. It is as though they weredisconnecting the wire from the bell orstupifying the nerve which carried thesignal to the bell so that it could notfunction and wholly ignore the realcause that started the bell to ring.

 The sensible person realizes that thequickest way to stop the signal andcause it to remain silent permanently isto seek for the cause that started thealarm and perform the remedy there.

I have known men and women whohave suffered from pain in the head andvarious parts of the body for weeks andmonths, and who have looked upon thepain ad the whole problem in their physical condition. Then, have taken medicine of all kinds, especially drug storeconcoctions, pills, and tablets. They

have had hydrotheraphy. electrotherapy,and every other kind of therapy. Theyhave had affirmations and concentrations and everv kind of psyschologicalprocess, and always with the thoughtthat the pains must be stopped. Theyhave succeeded in stopping the pains forminutes or even hours, only to find thatthey returned. Then, after a carefulstudy and examination was made, it wasfound that they had small pus-sacks atthe roots of their teeth, or some othersmall but serious cause for the pains,and by having the teeth attended to or

some other correction made somewherein the body the pains have discontinued,and freedom from suffering continued.

When Nature causes us to sense theslightest pain in any part of our body itis a signal that something is wrong andthat we have violated some law of N ature and must immediately correct whatwe have done and discontinue the violation. Continued pain means continuedviolation of some law and not until theviolation is corrected will the pain cease.

Drugging the system to ease the pain islike pinching the nerve to keep the signalfrom passing through it, but it has noaffect whatever on the real cause of thepain.

A person who is in deep pain froma serious wound may be relieved of thatpain by a blow on the head, which wouldbring unconsciousness to the body, andduring that unconscious condition therewould be no pain, but certainly thiswould be no way to look after a personwho has been seriously wounded. Yetmany seemingly harmless “pain killers”are very much like a blow on the headfor they simply stupify the systemagainst the sensation of pain. To easepain temporarily while the real cause

is being attended to is a rational andhumane act, but to ease the pain temporarily without attempting to cure thecause is foolhardy, for the pain is sureto return, and in the meantime the causeof it has had an opportunity to advanceor increase.

 The practice of metaphysics whetherby affirmation, prayers, or any othermethods for the purpose of stoppingpain without attending to the real causeis just as ridiculous as using drugs. Yetmost of the popular systems of today

contain affirmations for ease of pain andsuffering without teaching the correctmethods of reaching the cause.

It is only the flesh that can suffer, andit is only the flesh that can be injured,and it is only the flesh in which diseaseand disorder can exist. The soul andpsychic part of man cannot suffer painnor become disordered. Inharmoniouspsychic conditions may cause the psychicpart of man to manifest a wrong condition in the flesh. The remedy does notlay in the stopping of pain nor in anybelief that the soul is in torture. Thereal cause must be discovered andtreated rationally and efficiently. Thisis what the Rosicrucians teach in all of the doctrines, and especially in the workof the Sixth Degree. Thousands of demonstrations under my own noticehave proved the saneness and efficiencyof the Rosicrucian method, and it is thesemethods that the Welfare workers usein every branch of our organization. Inattempting to diagnose your case, therefore, do not concentrate your attention

upon the pain you feel, but try to discover the cause by relating the pain tothat which may be causing it, or reviewing the recent acts of your life to see if you have violated a law of Nature, neglected any part of your body, or injured

any part of it. Remember that withoutpain we would continue to violate many

laws and injure the body in many waysand bring about a breaking down of thebody and early transition. Pain enablesus to correct our mistakes and it istherefore a blessing in disguise, if we

only recognize it as such and heed itswarnings in time.
