THE

THOUGHT OF THE MONTHAWAKENING OUR TALENTS

f. w i l l discard the conven-tional definition of talent.As an immediate begin-

ning. to serve our pur- pose, we can say thatta len ts a re ap t i tudeswhich we display. Anaptitude to most of usmeans general inclination

toward something, such as, for example,mechanics, with perhaps more ability inthat than in some other endeavor. Thisseems irreconcilable with talent,  as per-haps you are accustomed to think of it.Usually, we look upon someone havingtalent as the possessor of a particularability which enables him to excel those

not having the same inclination.To use an analogy. There are two

men: one is a prominent student of lan-guages, a teacher of them, in fact; theother is a clerk in a large office. Theclerk is restless in his work; he is fasci-nated with mechanical things. He likesto toy with machinery, engines, motors,and devices. Besides having that love,he displays a mechanical talent, anability to do mechanical things betterthan anything else which he does. Theother man, the linguist, has no particu-lar interest in machinery or mechanics.Most certainly whatever he does me-chanically is not equal to his linguisticability. However, when by necessity hedoes devote his time to mechanicalfilings, he can accomplish more withthem than can the clerk who has a tal-ent for mechanics.

In your own experience, you have perhaps known people who would havemade fair attorneys or mathematicians, better than the usual perhaps, because

they excelled in those or related fieldswhen called upon, but who neverthelessdetested them and would do better in

their chosen field. This belies the popular conception that one who has a talentalways can achieve more with it thanone who does not have it.

A talent, therefore, is a personal responsiveness. a sensitiveness to demandsmade upon your faculties or intellectual powers, a sensitiveness which exceedsany other you have, so far as creativeability, or ability to accomplish, is concerned. Because of that sensitivity, thatinstinctive and organic inclination onyour part, the performing of all actsdirectly connected with it comes easier

for you. Since it is easier—that is, notso laborious—and since it satisfies youemotionally, you like it as well. It does prove that greater possibilities for youlie within the channel of  your talent.

There are two ways of explaining thissensitivity of talents. The materialist’theory is that in certain cortical andassociation areas of our brain the neurons (nerve cells) are more highly developed. this development; sometimes being a coincidence, and at other times amatter of heredity. However, the materialists are not in accord as to whetherthe predisposition or talents can betransmitted from father to son. DrAugust Weismann, whose works have become classics on heredity, says“Gauss;  was not the son of a  mathe-matician; Handel’s father was a sur-geon, of whose musical powers nothingis known; Titian was the son and alsothe nephew of a lawyer, while he andhis brother, Francesco Vecellio, werethe first painters in a family which pro

 pattern. It is not difficult for the bodyso to develop, because the soul has been

 put in a body which has been selectedto meet the demands which will bemade upon it. It is like an inventor,who has a certain design which he hasvisualized and wishes to create, being

given the materials best suited to his purpose.So  far it would seem, from our dis-

cussion, as though we could not escapeour talents. Everything appears to be preconceived for us, however, let usnot forget that we mortals have beengiven wills, which permit us to rejectand to deny our powers or to recognizethem. Therefore, whether talents whichare latent within us are exercised and brought to the maxim um of their effi-cacy depends solely upon us as indi-viduals. If we deny a talent, we re-

tard the development of self, the per-sonality in this incarnation.Talents are never so dormant that

we can not become conscious of theirexistence. The usual discovery of atalent consists in finding the easy man-ner in which we can develop the tech-nique to do something, or the immedi-ate comprehension we have of thedetails of some art or science, combinedwith our likeness for it. An inclinationto try something, a mere fascinationfor some endeavor, is not an indicationof a talent.  Many of us  have thought

we would like to do a certain thing.After some application to it, we found itlaborious and difficult for us to com-

 prehend, and therefore no longer en- joyable.

 A v o c a t io n s

If you have a longing to indulge in anart or a science, to be a mechanic ormathematician, try it.  Do not give upyour present profession or occupation,

 bu t make it a hobby or avocation. Veryshortly you will find whether you havethe aptitude. This will be indicated bythe ability to concentrate without effort

on the instructions of whatever you are pursuing, and, with practice, a rap idlydeveloping perfection and an increas-ing, rather than decreasing pleasure.

The   Further , you will find tha t as you exer Rn<irruri/in  cise the talent (and this is a further

 proof that it is one), you will be able;r u  t0 °^serve your world, your daily

 March  environment, ways and means of utiliz1949   ing your ability never dreamed of pre-

viously. Jus t as a man who acquiresgreater physical strength is able to liftgreater weights with ease, so one whoexercises his talents finds about himmore and more channels for their ex- pression.

There are usually one or more talents

which we possess and of which we arevery much conscious. Sometimes, sincethey seem so dominant , we devote our-selves to them, to the exclusion ofothers—perhaps one may have evengrea ter possibilities. It, therefore, be-comes necessary to awaken these sub-merged talents—rather, to discovertha t we have them. To do this, youmust suggest the nature of certain voca-tions, trades, arts, or sciences as an ideato your subjective mind. Allow thestimulus of those ideas to arouse withinyou any special responsiveness you

may have to them. For example, goto an opera, or visit an art gallery andlook at good paintings, try describingan incident of the day in writing. Seeif you can mentally create an improve-ment on some mechanical device. Inother words, let your consciousnessdwell on unaccustomed experiences,something to which any talent sensi-tivity vou may have can respond. Themental area of which a talent may con-sist in your brain may be now as a parched ground waiting for rain to giveit life.

An excellent way to awaken talent isto visualize people in different trades, professions, arts , and sciences, to which possibly before you have given little orno thought. When you visualize themdoing these things, if you feel a quick-ening in your solar plexus, a sort ofsuppressed excitement, that is your cueto investigate that particular sphere ofactivity further. Go to the place wherethese things are being done, that towhich you respond, and see if you canhave this experience directly; or tryimitating the activity in your home, bystudying or reading about it. Many aman never knew he had a talent forart, for example, until he started to dab around   with someone’s palette and brushes. Finally he senses a mastery,an ease of achievement, and a satisfac-tion that inwardly tells him, “I havediscovered a talent.”

Our Quaking Earth By  R o d m a n R . C l a y s o n , Grand Master 

e   a r e   all well aware thatthe p h y s i c a l scienceshave made rapid stridesof progress in the firsthalf of this twentiethcentury. Never before, inany period of our history,has so much enlighten-ment been brought to us

regarding the earth and its environ-ment. As an example, developments inradio, meteorology, physics, chemistry,

and astronomy, have been revolution-ary. We now know the answers tomany things which perplexed theminds of our forefathers. This is, in-deed, an age of enlightenment.

With all of our knowledge, however,there are many questions and problemswhich are yet left unanswered. Amongthese we find that the cause of earth-quakes is still an enigma. Geologistsspeak with conviction of the elementsof time, the age of the earth—which is

 judged from studying rock formation—soil erosion, the rising and settling ofcontinents, and of the possible futuresurface changes of the earth itself.Rocks found on the earth and rockstrata found in the earth have told ge-ologists many things. But the rockshave not told the scientists how themountains were pushed up from theearth’s crust, and why the AtlanticCoast of the United States is very slowlysettling while the Pacific Coast is grad-ually rising; nor have they revealedwhy the trembling earth has occasionalconvulsions in the nature of earth-quakes.

It is true, there is much evidencehaving bearing on the how and why ofthis subject; however, it is worth not-ing that this evidence is not interpretedthe same by all scientists who make astudy of the exposed crust of this planet.As a matter of fact, there are severalschools of thought propounding differ-ent theories—one school postulates thatearthquakes are caused by one thingwhile another school postulates a dif-ferent theory. But let us give some con-

sideration to this problem, because thesubject of earthquakes is of interest tonearly everyone. The very word earthquake strikes fear in the hearts of many

 people. Some wonder if the earth can be destroyed by earthquakes. Somequestion whether earthquakes can be

 predicted.Interestingly enough, there are cer-

tain belts in which earthquakes occurmore frequently than in other parts ofthe world. The locale most frequented

 by earthquakes is Japan, where earth-quakes are experienced practicallyevery day. Earthquakes occur frequent-ly in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska, andthe Queen Charlotte Islands. Califor-nia, Mexico, Central America, Vene-zuela, and tiie Pacific Coast of SouthAmerica have their share of frequentearthquakes. Then, too, an earthquake belt seems to extend southward fromJapan through the Philippine Islandsto New Zealand. Another belt runsthrough the northern Mediterraneancountries into Asia Minor and the In-dian Ocean.

as to the cause of earthquakes. One ofthese states that earthquakes are caused by explosions deep within the earth.Another theory postulates that earth-quakes are connected with volcanoes.One interesting speculation proposesthat deep within the earth is a reservoirof lava which occupies passagewayswithin more or less solid portions of theearth, and that the movement of thelava within these passages causes pres-sure to burst the walls,thus causing earth-quakes. A theory longadhered to states thatthe core of the earth isa molten mass, andthat its gaseous heatforms an upward pres-sure against the crustof the ear th . Thistheory holds that thecrust of the earth ishoneycombed wi thvast caves, and that thegas pressure builds upwithin these caves un-til such time as theremust be a release ofthe pressure, resultingin an earthquake. An-other theory includesthe presence of thecaves within the crustof the earth, and thatsometimes the wallsand ceil ings of thecaves fall in, thuscausing the earth toshake. Those who holdthis theory believe thatthe collapse of thewalls allows the fall-ing mass of rocks toset up earth tremors.

At present the theory most generallyaccepted is that earthquakes originatefrom sudden fracturing deep down inthe bedrock of the earth’s crust wheregrowing stresses finally exceed thestrength of the rock. Some of thesefractures reach the surface of the earth.It is not known what causes the stressor what precipitates the movement ofthe rock.

On the surface of the land, earth-quake faults have been identified andare geographically positioned. In manyinstances earthquakes seem to reoccur 

in these faults. Such a rift, known asthe San Andreas fault, runs in a south-erly direction from San Francisco, and passes very close to the City of San Jose. Every year several minor quakesoccur in this fault.

The development of better and betterseismographs, which are instrumentsfor recording the signature of the trem- bling earth, are of much aid in deter-mining the intensity of the earthquake

in the locale of theseismograph, and thedirection and distanceof the quake’s epicen-ter. In the astronomi-cal museum of theRosicrucian Planetari-um, the seismographis in continuous oper-ation throughout theyear. It records hun-dreds of near and dis-tant earthquakes.

The zigzag recordingof the seismographneedle is of much helpto seismologists in ar-riving at many con-clusions about thestructure of the earth.Interestingly enough,a distant earthquake isrecorded by at leastthree different kindsof oscillations of theneedle, or pen, uponthe recording drum ofthe seismograph. Thismeans that there arethree kinds of wavesor vibrations sent outthrough the earth fromthe source o f thequake, and these vi-

 brations arrive at seismograph observa-tories at different times; in other words,they travel at different velocities. It has

 been estimated that the heaviest waveof vibration set up by the earthquaketravels at the rate of approximately sixmiles a second.

A great many seismologists speak ofthe vibrations as rays  instead of waves. This is due to the indication that theearthquake wave propagation under-goes both refraction and reflection with-in the earth. The erratic recordings ofthe seismograph have caused seismolo-

• A new ty pe o f mesotron, apparently possessing a mass ten times the mass of an electron, has been discovered by Dr. E. W. Cowan in the physics laboratory of the California Institute of Technology.

• Invest igatio ns made by Capt. Clark of the Naval Observatory reveal that the earth's average rotation during the year 1929 was approximately one part in twenty million faster than during 1909 ; enough of a difference to cause a noticeable error in the frequency determination of high frequency 

radio waves, which use the rotation of the earth as a time standard.

• New kinds of brain waves which  are apparently related to man’s thought processes have been discovered by Drs. Kennedy, Gotts- danker, Armington, and Gray, of  Tufts College. These waves have been named Kappa Waves, to distinguish them from others already known. They possess frequencies from 10 to 12 cycles per second.

gists and geologists to come to the con-clusion that the body of the earth must

 be made up of shells,  increasing in den-sity toward the center. It is theorizedthat there are two shells and a core.The outer shell, called the lithosphere,is thought to be about 700 miles thick.The inner shell is estimated to have athickness of 1000 miles, while the coreof the earth indicates that it has den-sity equal to or exceeding that of ironor steel. According to the interpretationof seismic recordings, earthquake vibra-tions are deflected from the core, ratherthan passing through it. The suggestionthat the core of the earth is of a metal-lic nature means that it is solid. If thecore is not solid—and some scientistsfeel that it is not—its liquid is not of

ordinary magma, or lava.

U n k n o w n D e t a i l s

A branch of geology, known as diastrophism, has to do with the process or processes of the deforming of the earth’scrust, producing continents, mountains,and ocean basins. This study allowsfor lateral compression of layers ofearth which is said to be responsiblefor the pushing up of mountains andcontinents. It also takes into considera-tion  folding formations  as the result of

 pressure and movement of layers ofrock. According to diastrophism thefolded strata, which formed mountains,shortened or narrowed the continentalland structure. This leaves the infer-ence that without mountains the  con-tinents would be much wider. As therock strata folded, and formed moun-tains, there were, of course, earth-quakes. The folding process is said to be gradual, and still continues. We aretold that there is every indication thatthe earth has not yet settled down to

the serene calm of old age, and thatdiastrophic activity is nearly as greatnow as it was millions of years ago.

It is stated that imperceptible earthmovements create breaks in rock strata.Sometimes this causes a squeezing oroverlapping of the strata so that certainrock structures tip or settle. It is be-lieved, for instance, that the east sideof the previously mentioned San An-dreas fault is fairly stationary, whilethe west side is slowly moving north-ward at the rate of two inches a year.

This may indicate pressure or stress.

If the breaking point is reached, a quake of unpredictable intensity mayoccur. There are too many unknowndetails about these movements to per-mit earthquake forecasting. In recentyears an ingenious instrument has beendeveloped known as the tiltmeter. Likethe seismograph it, too, has a penwhich records on a graph the degreeand rate of tilt of strata and land sur-faces. It may take years for this deli-cate instrument to show a fraction ofa degree of tilt

Much evidence supports the scien-tific conclusions of geologists—which,for the most part, are arrived at bymeans of observation and reasoning;however, geologists frankly admit thatthe questions of the layman, who hasno  scientific knowledge about earth-quakes and diastrophism, are some-times rather disconcerting. Most peoplewho give thought to this subject are prone to accept the theory propoundedhundreds of years ago: that the centerof the earth is a molten mass while thecrust of the earth is of a different struc-ture because it has cooled—assuming,of course, that the entire planet was atone time a very hot homogeneous mass.Thinking people point out as their un-derstanding that for every one hundred

feet of depth the temperature withinthe earth rises one degree. Welloperators in the oil fields state that the tem- perature of the earth increases withdepth. This becomes associated withtremendous gas pressures  from  withinthe earth; and perhaps the layman may be forgiven if he wonders whether suchterrific pressures have not something todo with earthquakes.

Most certainly gas from miles under-ground helps to promote volcanoes; andthe layman wonders what happens to

the diastrophic theory of the foldingrock strata forming mountains since,within his own lifetime, he definitelyknows of mountains which have been pushed up out of the land and sea inthe formation of volcanoes. It should be noted that the earth quakes andtrembles when a volcano is erupting.Perhaps the varied activities of nature provide for more than one process ofmountain raising. One also wonders,when land settles into the sea what hasgiven way under the land?

The Rosicrucian New YearSunday, March 20, 1949, is Proclaimed by the Imperator as the

Beginning of the Traditional Rosicrucian New Year 3302

n March 20, 1949, at 10:49  p.m., Greenwich

time, the sun, in its an-nual progression throughthe zodiac, enters thesign of Aries. At thismoment, according to theca lendar used in theWestern world and in

agreement with the records of timewhich man has kept for many centur-ies, the season of spring will begin.Spring is indicated in the very mani-festation of nature as a period of be-ginning and of renewal. It is, there-fore, obvious, even to the most casual

observer, that spring is the beginningof a new cycle. Plant life changes fromits dormant state of winter to a re-newed growth. Flowers bloom, animallife becomes restless, waves of migra-tion take place, and throughout naturethere is an obvious and welldefinedstate of revival from a quiet or restfulstate into new life and expression.

It is little wonder that man, in ob-serving the actual cycles of the seasons,has looked upon this time of year as anew year, the beginning of somethingdifferent. Ancient man, in accordancewith traditions that have reached us,considered winter as a possible end ofall life. That is why, around the periodof the shortest day of the year, celebra-tions and feasts were held to appeasethe Cosmic forces or gods that theymight revive the manifestation of lifeon earth. From this ancient commemo-ration of the period following the short-est day in the year, there has been car-ried down to us the holiday season sur-

rounding Christmas. From that timeon, ancient man believed that as the

days grew longer that life again would be manifest in the dormant conditionof nature.

As the buds on trees began to swelland other evidences of life became ob-vious, it was apparent that the new sea-son had begun. Also, around this time,there arose the occasion for ceremonies,rituals, feasts, and other observances ofthe beginning of the year. Tradition-ally, the Rosicrucian Order has alsolooked to the coming of spring as thearrival of the new year. Although inthe mundane affairs of the Order andamong its membership the current cal-endar is used, the commemoration ofthe new year, based upon the annualcycle of the recurrence of life as foundin the spring, is also observed. TheRosicrucians, then, each year perpetu-ate this tradition by celebrating thenew year with special rituals and cere-mony.

In all Rosicrucian Lodges and Chap-ters special convocations will be heldupon this anniversary. Every activemember of the Rosicrucian Order iseligible to attend these ceremonies and

Geological scientists, however, have

g’ven us some very definite facts. Theequency of earthquake recurrencesseems to be in the areas mentioned at

the beginning of this article. Earth-quakes may occur at any time, andanywhere; proof of this is borne out bythe recent earthquake in Nevada. Thereis absolutely no way of predicting thefrequency of earthquakes, or where,when, or how severely, a quake willshake the earth.

Literally thousands of earth tremorsoccur each year. The majority of these

are of minor intensity and are knownonly by the recordings of seismographs.Fortunately, damaging earthquakes arevery few. Geologists give us the consol-ing information that it is extremely un-likely that the earth will ever meetdestruction as a result of earthquakes.An earthquake, however, may bringabout the dislocation of observable sur-face structure which sometimes leavesopen fissures. Usually it is only withinvery restricted belts that earthquakesare destructive. When a severe earth-

quake occurs, the most dangerous placeis the seacoast, other than in falling

 buildings. Many quakes occur beneaththe ocean, sometimes causing very broad and high water waves to beformed. At times considerable damagehas been done to coastal cities by thesesocalled tidal waves.

It has been observed that the Atlan-tic Coast of North America is verygradually lowering into the sea, proba-

 bly because it has no longer a fold of

earth strata there—hence very, veryfew earthquakes. On the other hand,the Pacific Coast is slowly rising be

cause of continued rockfolding activ-

ity beneath it. The Pacific Coast, youwill note, has frequent tremblings ofthe earth.

Because an area has once experienceda severe quake is no reason to believethat the same area will eventually ex- perience another severe quake. Quakesoften come in flurries. A heavy quakeis invariably followed by smaller after-shocks. Sometimes there are warningforeshocks. A flurry of minor shocksdoes not necessarily indicate the ap-

 proach of a heavy shake; as a matter

of theory, such shocks may offset the pressure tending to precipitate a severequake.

While the geological scientist knowsa great deal about the effects of anearthquake, his knowledge of what anearthquake is and how it originates is,for the most part, theoretical. As newinstruments and methods of detectionare perfected, we will learn throughthe seismologist and the geologist moreand more about the reasons for thequaking of the earth. These scientistshave given us very valuable informa-tion with regard to the need forstrengthening our buildings and whereto build bridges and dams.

Through the study of inquiringminds, we shall learn more and moreabout the functions of nature. Thesearch for knowledge has always beenthe noblest expression of the humanspirit. Man’s insatiable desire forknowledge about himself, the world inwhich he lives, and the forces by which

he is surrounded, contributes to the progress of mankind on this whirling,quaking ball which we call our earth

E M a u p a s s a n t , we aretold, had the ability tofind the story in the sim-

 plest of material ele-ments—in fact, in a piece of string. A groupof students with whom Iwas associated last sum-mer proved quite success-

ful in transforming into objects ofmystical significance such common- places as a cake of soap, a piece of char-coal, a thermometer, and a lock of hair.Their success encouraged me to attemptthe same thing recently while I lay onmy back mechanically making a fistand unmaking it, donating a pint of

 blood to the Red Cross. Perhaps, understandingly, my thoughts revolvedabout blood itself—blood as a materialelement, as a vital fluid, as a sacredsymbol, as an object of compelling in-terest. Many things so necessary tolife—blood among them—are for themost part forgotten until something inthe  form  of an emergency  brings themto mind; then we wonder how we couldever have neglected to know all aboutthem.

It may be that we philosophize firstand thus set a wrong premise on whichto start our   investigation; or, it may bethat the most vital substances and proc-esses of life and being are so seeminglysimple that we are baffled when wediscover them to be complex. As Fran-

cis Bacon suggested, nature may be toosubtle for the senses of man. Most ofus, in these days of specialization, dodgethe matter of investigation or thoughton the grounds that that which lies out-side of our particular field is not essen-tial knowledge for us unless and untilwe are smackup against a situationwhere we are forced to consider it.

I suppose  I had not given a thoughtto the wonder of blood—the part it plays in our existence, making its cir-cuit regularly and running up thestaggering total of eight gallons a min-ute—since I used to suffer from nose- bleeds—that is, not until I met withthe subject early in my Rosicrucianstudies. But being not particularlyscientific, I was even then impressedwithout being too much interested. For-tunately, my lack of interest did notaffect the blood’s value and its serviceto me, and the knowledge of its compo-sition and function was a stake to whichI could safely tie other knowledge as itwas unfolded. I am afraid, I was neversufficiently speculative to concern my-self with the symbology of blood as itrelated to religion. How many, I won-der, have asked themselves what thereal meaning was back of the hymn’swords “washed in the blood of thelamb.” I confess, I never did; yet, itis there.

Boston, 1948) calls blood “the sign ofconsciousness, the mark of life ladenwith awareness.” He also speaks ofthe drop which fell from the woundedMaster on the Cross above the legend-ary burial place of Adam, and awak-ened him to a realization of things notof earth. Blood, a substance common toevery life, without which we could notlive, also a symbol of that which liftsour awareness from a low level of tem-

 porary existence to a high one of eter-nity: it is worth considering.

Primitives recognized blood as potentwith life and warred on their neigh-

 bors whenever vegetation grew scarce,drenching the earth with that whichthey thought would bring it to lifeagain. They also drank the blood ofanimals and men so that the courageand strength of the slain might enterinto them. Blood proved successful as afertilizer and also as a bolsterer ofstrength and courage. Naive thinkingand crude methods hid the fact thateven among primitives science and reli-gion were one. Yet, it was so, and so itcontinued even after the time of spe-cialization. The priest was the scientist,

 physician both to the soul and the body.And in spite of what we customarilyread, their fields were compatible and

their results psychologically successful.Knowledge, it is true, was entrustedonly to a privileged few—those whowere dedicated and set apart; but thosefew accepted seriously the responsibil-ity and used knowledge for the benefitof all men.

Evolution brought a gradual advancein the general level of ability, and alsothe necessity for diffusion of knowledgeover a larger area. Science broke awayfrom religion, or religion crystallizedtoo quickly and cast out the inquirer

and investigator. In any case, whatwas before a single field now becametwo opposing groups. The terminologyof one became meaningless to the otherand new investigation was necessary

 before a new and more satisfactory te r-minology could be arrived at. In real-ity, however, only the terminology wasdifferent—the truth of the old was stillfound to be true even in terms of thenew. Blood was still a symbol to theChurch; and Science, with every addeddiscovery about its physical character 

and nature, merely heightened its cor-rectness and importance as a symbol.

The conflict all along has been anunnatural and unnecessary one, butthe mystic has seemed to be the only

one who has realized it. That, no doubt,accounts for his having made more progress than either. He recognizesthat the goal of Science and the goalof the Church is one goal, and so hemakes his way toward it patiently byevolution rath er than revolution. Themystic, like Holmes’ chambered Nauti-lus, is constantly breaking out of nar-row limits into larger views. His scien-tific spirit of investigation keeps himadvancing to fuller knowledge and hisreligious attitude keeps him ever rever-ent in the face of nature’s continuingmysteries. With Shakespeare, he mod-estly says, “In Nature’s infinite book ofsecrecy, a little can I read.”

In spite of this, the religionist looksaskance at the mystic and calls himapostate  and renegade.  Science ridi-cules him as a coarse experimenter anda charlatan; yet, to himself, he isneither. Nonetheless, he remains thefriend of both, and, when given theopportunity, reconciles their view-

 points.

Through the years, the mystic hasshown many facets to the world and somen have often been confused. Is he akabalist, an alchemist, a magician, afanatic, a zealot, a saint or a simpleton,or merely a harmless and slightly ad-dled individual who hallucinates fre-quently and is all too gullible? He has

 been known by every name—and stillis. But does the name matter? Exter-nals, after all, are only externals, andthe wise man often is forced to play thefool for his own protection.

Protection? Yes. Even the Church has been known to send to the stake thosewhom she later canonized; and Sciencehas ostracized and pilloried manywhom she later memorialized as bene-factors. Many of these were students ofthe mystery schools—martyrs to truth,

 proud to*bear the consequences as a part of their responsibility for the ad-vancement of humanity. Who was thefirst? We do not know. Neither do weknow who will be the last. But we doknow that the list has been great and

long, and that it contains such names asSocrates, Jesus, Galileo, Paracelsus.

Dr. William Harvey belongs here,too, especially in connection with blood,for by his discovery that it circulates,he revived the possibility of transfusion

and laid the basis for modem science of physiology. Great as his discovery was—Dr. John H. Glynn, in The Story of   Blood   (A. A. Wyn, New York, 1948),calls it “the most important landmarkin the story of blood”—it wasn’t imme-diately announced lest the nature of itsubject its discoverer to something morethan ridicule. Yet, Harvey finally said“the die is cast, and my trust is in mylove of truth and the candor that in-heres in cultivated minds.” Harvey wasa Rosicrucian; and so his triumph wasalso mysticism’s triumph, and one in

which each of us shares. Once more hegave the lie to the belief that soundscience and sane mysticism could notgo hand in hand for the glory of Godand the benefit of man’s estate.

Dr. Glynn’s tribute to Harvey isheartwarming; his whole book, too, isone tha t can hardly be bettered. Thelayman, desirous of authentic informa-tion, untechnically and readably setforth, will find it instructive and fasci-nating. For one thing, it explains thedifferent blood types and why theymust be known in cases of transfusion:

Since all blood is not the same, trans-fusions between types incompatible arealways uncertain — sometimes fatal.Again he sets forth interestingly thetransition of direct transfusion to theuse of plasma, albumin, and fibrin.And so, in spite of many metaphysical

forays—the heart as a symbol, barbersurgeons, and the significance of blood-letting—I kept coming back to blooditself which Robert Burton in The 

 Ana tomy of Melancholy  calls “a hot,sweet, temperate, red humor.”

I tried to visualize the straw-colored  liquid and the microscopic red cellscrowded three thousand to the inch asit flowed out of my vein into the jaralongside. I thought of the red cells,manufactured at the rate of nine hun-dred billion a day, carrying oxygen tothe capillaries and carrying off carbon

dioxide. I thought, too, of the whitecells, fewer in number, like primitivewanderers in the blood stream, scavengering for food. Patient Science atlast has found a way to seal its vitalityoutside the body for months instead ofminutes and so extend its usefulness athousandfold. And here I was, againthanks to Science, helping to save a lifeor speed the recovery of someone, astranger to me but dearer to others,without any pain, risk, or inconven-ience to myself. I began to see newsignificance in an ageold symbol.

In   h i s    preface to the first edition of

“The Rape of the Lock” (1712),Alexander Pope wrote to Arabella Fer

mor, to whom he dedicated the poem:“The Rosicrucians are a people I must

 bring you acquainted with. The bestaccount I know of them is in a French book called  Le Comte de Gabalis, which, both in its title and size, is solike a novel, that many of the fair sexhave read it for one by mistake.”

First published in Paris in 1670,there has hardly been a time from thentill now that this work of Abbe N. DeVillars has not been in print and find-ing readers. Equally praised anddamned, it gives unmistakable evidenceof genuine esoteric knowledge.

It has been said that the abbe drewhis story from the life of Giuseppe Borri, an Italian alchemist whose experi-ences strangely paralleled in part thoseof Cagliostro. It seems more nearly cor-rect, however, to believe that Borri’s  La Chiave Del Cabinetto  was an adapta-tion from  Le Comte de Gabalis.  Bethat as it may,  Le Comte de Gabalis  isan exceedingly worthwhile venture foranyone gifted with true discernment.In its discourses, he will find both re-freshment and instruction. He willrealize that the unsavory aura which

the book has for some is due to theirmisinterpretation of the author’s in-tent.

The edition in our collection is theEnglish translation of the 1680 one.Its title page runs: “The Count de Ga-

 balis, or the Extravagant Mysteries ofthe Cabalists exposed, in five pleasantdiscourses on the Secret Sciences. Doneinto English by P. A. Gent, with shortanimadversions. 12mo. London, Prin t-ed for R. M., Printer to the Cabalistical Society, of the Sages,  at the Sign of the

RosyCrucian, 1680.”

It is interesting, in view of Pope’sreference to the book, to note that atleast once “The Rape of the Lock” and

 Le Comte de Gabalis  appeared togetherin a single edition. This was an Italian

translation of the two works printed inLondon in 1685. A copy of this editionis in the library of the University ofBologna.

Since thousands of readers of the  Rosicrucian Digest   have not read many of theearlier articles of our late Imperator, Dr. H. Spencer Lewis, we adopted the editorial policy of publish ing each month one of his outstanding articles, so that his thoughtswould continue to reside within the pages of this publication.

c c a s i o n  a l l y   one of ourmembers asks the oldquestion, in his lodge, orwrites it in his corre-

spondence when makingreports to the SupremeLodge, which is usually phrased something like

 ___________   this: “Why do you at-tempt to make a distinction betweenspirit and soul in the teachings whenthe most universal impression or un-derstanding is that spirit and soul arethe same? Your use of the term spirit  to signify a universal essence existingin all matter and not solely in thehuman being seems to rob spirit of itsholiness, and to make it less Divine

than the holy spirit in the Bible.”We realize that the Rosicrucian

teachings were the first, in America atleast, to promulgate generally the ideathat spirit, as used in the sacred teach

Th e  wigs Master mystics of the past, Rosicrucian  £gnified a universal essence radiating _ . from the Divine source of all creative Digest  energies and powers, permeating all March  matter, and giving all matter its vital1949  ity. How well we remember the first

classes of the Rosicrucian work held in New York many years ago, when thisunique use of the word spirit   was first presented. Many questioned its use at

the time, and long and interesting werethe discussions which followed.I think that I am safe in saying that

the Rosicrucian literature of the pres-ent cycle in America was the firstliterature of a metaphysical or onto-logical nature using the term spirit   inthe sense in which the Rosicrucians useit. I have been pleased to note in the past ten years that quite a number ofother philosophical movements, as wellas religions, have come to use the wordin the same sense, and that even many of the prominent clergymen of the

country make a distinction betweenspirit and soul. However, as I havesaid, many of our new members andsome of the old ones still ask the ques-tion given above, and are undoubtedly puzzled by the use of the word spirit  as it is used in our lectures and lessons.

First of all, we must note that themisunderstanding, or shall we say con-cern, about the use of the term spirit  is due to its use by the Christian doc

trines in so many different ways, andwith such liberal interpretation of itsreal meaning, that these doctrines ofthe Christian church are responsiblefor the miscomprehension of the truemeaning of the word spirit . In veryfew of the sacred writings of other reli-gions of the world is the word spirit  used as a synonym for so many otherterms or attributes of God’s powers. I

 believe that this is due wholly to errorson the part of the translators of theChristian Bible; and I believe also thatthe reason so many of the clergymen oftoday are using the word spirit   in a dif-ferent sense and more in keeping withthe Rosicrucian interpretation is thatthe later translations or versions of theHoly Bible have been more careful in

 presenting the exact shades of mean-ings of many of the words that wereused with confusion in the earliertranslations.

In America, many of our membersare accustomed to thinking that theword spirit   is a synonym for the wordsoul,  and in nearly every instance wefind that they have arrived at this con-clusion as a result of its use in this wayin the Christian writings. Furthermore,in the English language the word spirit  has lost its original root meaning, butamong foreigners and especially thoseof the Latin tongue, the word spirit   im-mediately brings to mind its originalroot with a meaning quite differentfrom the English interpretation orapplication.

I may say that the use of the wordspirit   in the Rosicrucian teachings wasnot arbitrarily adopted, nor was it se-lected by the American jurisdiction as adistinctive word having a very definitemeaning for English students, butcomes into our teachings through aliteral translation of the term and thelessons of the Rosicrucian work. Ourorganization in America would not be

warranted in changing such terms as ithas in its official vocabulary simply because of a misunderstanding among persons who are of the English tongue.In other words, it would be inconsistentwith truth and with the principles ofuniversal thinking and comprehensionto change a term in the English lessonssimply because the English mind has adifferent and erroneous comprehensionof the meaning of some foreign words.

Just because we have misunderstoodthe meaning of the word, in the Eng-lish countries, is one excellent reasonfor its continued use in the Rosicru-cian teachings, so that we may changeour thinking, correct our errors, andlearn an interesting lesson.

S p i r i t a n d S o u l  

There are many instances of the useof the word spirit   in the Holy Bible,especially in the older versions, clearlyshowing that the translators were veryindifferent or unmindful of the realsignificance of the word, and were moreor less careless in the use of synonymsfor spirit and soul. The idea, prevalentin the Christian minds, that spirit issomething holy and found only in con-nection with the soul of human beings,is due to the use of the term  Holy Spirit  or  Holy Ghost,  in connection with thetrin ity of the Godhead. The doctrine ofthe trinity was adopted long after theChristian church had been founded,and the use of the term  Holy Spirit   or

 Holy Ghost   was an arbitrary one andshoudd not have been used to implywhat is really meant. When the words Holy Spirit   or  Holy Ghost   as used inthe English Bibles are translated intothe Latin or other foreign languages,the readers in those languages receivea different idea of what is meant thando English students, for they cannothelp but associate the original rootmeaning of the word spirit   with theterm as used in the Bible.

In the first chapter of Genesis, weread, for instance, that the spirit of Godmoved upon the face of the waters. Inolder versions and in other sacred writ-ings telling the story of creation, theidea presented is that in the beginningeverything was without life or anima-tion, chaotic, disorderly, uncontrolled,and did not have creative or construc-tive essences of any kind. This condi-tion of affairs was changed by the spiritof God, moving from God into all thatHe created, which animated, at once, allmatter or all things created by Godwith a creative force and energy, andimmediately this brought about systemand order.

The alchemist writing on this pointin ancient times would have said some-thing similar to the statement made byDr. John Dalton, the famed Rosicrucian

 physicist in later centuries, which was“Until the spirit of God entered intomatter, matter was uncreative, unpro-ductive, and unsystematized. Its exist-ence atomically was a result of the crea-tion of the atoms and the moleculesthrough a Divine decree, and all that

existed was stationary, without motion,and fixed in crystallized form withoutthe power to grow, change, or repro-duce. It was then that God moved Hisspirit into all that He had created, andthe creative powers of this spirit notonly gave animation to the crystallizedcells and the group formation of atomicstructures, but also caused them to pro-ceed in an orderly manner to extendtheir motions and vitality in accordancewith the law of the angles of their form,and the rate of vibration of the spirit inthem. Thus the atoms continued to

grow in accordance with the law oftheir angles and the axes of their bod-ies, and to reproduce themselves in thedistinct classifications in which theywere originally created. Thus chaoswas turned into order, and lifelessnessinto eternal animation.”

It may be said in passing that all ofthe mystics, alchemists, and philoso- phers of the past and up to the time ofDr. Dalton, not only considered spiritas motion and motion as one of thefundamental principles of all life andall creative processes, making matter

manifest in all of its forms, but theymost reverently and sincerely lookedupon the spirit of motion and the spiritenergy itself as a Divine energy havingits source in God and its manifestationof God. Therefore, the use of the wordspirit   in connection with materialthings, and as a term for the universalenergy that is found in all matter, didnot necessarily imply that it was with-out holiness or divinity, as some of ourChristian brethren of today believe.

In the same Book of Genesis, we findthe word spirit   wrongly used in one

sense, and yet correctly used in anothersense, in connection with the creationof man. For here we find that afterGod had made man out of the material

 March   was the soul, and that the soul was1949  breathed into the soulless body of man.

If our use of the word spirit   is correct,then the soulless body of man formedout of the material elements of theearth was already charged and filledwith spirit, for spirit was in all of thematter composing the body of man, butthe soul was not there and had to be

ments do not say that the spirit was breathed into the body of man, but thatthe breath of life was breathed into thenostrils of man. It is this statement thatis used as one of the fundamentals ofthe Rosicrucian ontology, for the pur- pose of showing the duality of man’sexistence:  the body made of mortalmatter filled with the essence of spirit,and the soul of man, which was addedto the physical part of man. Thereafterman became not a living body, or a liv-

ing manifestation of earthly elements, but a living soul, giving emphasis tothe soul part of man as the primarymanifestation of his existence, and plac-ing the physical body as secondary.

 Now if we go back into the ancientteachings of the Rosicrucians and of theearly mystics, we find many interest-ing points that will help us to under-stand the use of the word spirit.  Wefind that the Jewish people had threewords for the idea of soul.  These were

“Nefesh,” “Neshemah,” and “Ruach.”All three of these words meant  Breath, albeit in different aspects. The word

 Ruach  was ge n e r a l l y translated“Spirit,”  but really meant a rush ofwind. In this sense the word Pneuma was used in the Greek   language tomean the same thing, or perhaps a rushof air, or air itself.

In the Latin languages we find theword Spiritus, which also meant breath,air, or wind; there is no real Englishequivalent for the Latin word Spiritus. The Greek word Psuche,  like the He-

 brew word  Nefesh,  referred to the soul.We find this distinction clearly madein Job XXXIII: 4, “The Spirit of Godhath made me, and the Breath of theAlmighty hath given me life.” How-ever, we find, through mistranslation,another Biblical statement that contra-dicts the idea expressed in Job. In Ec-clesiastes XII: 7, we read: “Then shallthe dust return to the earth as it was;

and the spirit shall return unto Godwho gave it.” This latter statementwould intimate that after transition the

 physical elements composing the bodyof man would have no spirit in them,and that the spirit in matter would re-turn to God with the soul. This is cer-tainly an idea contrary to other ideasstated elsewhere in the Bible. It in ti-mates that spirit and soul are one, andthat either word may be used to meanthe same thing. Yet in Firs t Thessalonians V:23, we find that man is pos-sessed of spirit, soul, and body. Thissame idea is expressed in other partsof the Bible.

Another interesting Biblical referenceto this matter is found in John 111:8.

Here the original Greek or Hebrewword was translated literally into“wind,” adhering very closely to itsreal meaning instead of using the wordspirit   or soul  as the translators used itin other parts of the Bible. With theGreeks, in their writings, the wordPneuma  did not mean soul  or spirit,  but a breath of life or a vitalizing forceassociated with the soul consciousnessas a separate thing and not the same.The Greeks had the word Psuche,which meant Breath and Soul, andnever had the meaning of the word

 Life, or animation or vitality, for theyhad other words which conveyed themeaning of life and vitality. Therefore,the Greeks could not have made themistake of using one word that wouldhave meant soul, life, vitality, and breath.

In tracing the meaning of thesewords in Greek, Latin, and other lan-guages, I find that the adjective Psuchi- kos, which means pertaining to the soul,appears six times in the New Testa-ment. It is never correctly translatedto mean psychic or spiritual, or “of the

 breath,” which would be correct, butfour times it is translated as “natural”and twice as “sensual.”

Attempting to find a proper con-sideration of these terms in the official

church writings, we note that the Ro-man Catholics in their official publica-tions candidly refer the investigator toall the early Jewish writings for in-formation regarding the words spirit  and soul.  On the other hand, the Prot-estant Christian denominations whichhave so much to say about the soul intheir writings and preachments, andwhich constantly use the word spirit  asa synonym for soul, seem unable to tellwhat the words really mean, or howthey came into use, but merely inti-

mate that they had something to dowith the breath. Especially in regardto the word spirit   there seems to be nodefinite understanding except that it isused with the adjective “Holy” to meanthe equivalent of the Holy Ghost. TheHoly Ghost, on the other hand, in allOriental writings, refers to a specialform of Divine Consciousness that de-scended into the Avatars, Divine Mas-ters, or Sons of God at the time of theirmissionary work, or surrounded per-sons who were especially blessed at thetime of baptism.

The point to be learned from theforegoing facts is that the word spirit  as used in the Rosicrucian teachings toindicate a Divine essence that pervadesall space and animates all matter, in-dependent of the soul or Holy Ghost, iscorrectly used in an international sense,and in a philological sense, and is inaccordance with the facts as we findthem in Nature. This is certainly suf-ficient reason for the continuation ofthe use of the word spirit   in the Rosi-crucian teachings in the manner inwhich it is used.

h e r e   is no such thing as juvenile del inquency.There is, however, pa-rental delinquency. Doesthat sound like the “potcalling the kettle black”?Consider, then, that achild reflects two things

 —his heritage and hisearly environment. Who but the par-ents are responsible for these?

When a father and mother look downwith awe and humility at their new-

 born child sleeping peacefully in itscradle, or bassinet, they do not   alwaysrealize the great responsibility that has been entrusted to them. They do not  always recognize that this responsibil-ity not only includes taking care of thechild’s physical welfare but consists ofencouraging its mental and emotional

growth as well. Also, the child muste taught to live harmoniously with  other human beings, to gradually do

things for itself, and to become even-tually a wellbalanced adult, mentally,emotionally, and physically.

It is not so much what the adultsSAY, but rather what they DO that in-fluences the ideals of the child growingup in the home. The parents shouldlive in such a way as to be worthy ex-amples for the child to follow. The

 parents cannot shirk their responsibil-ity by sending the child to a paid tutor.Regardless of what he learns or fails tolearn there, his real mental and emo-tional development starts in the home,

while he is still a baby. Through hisfather and mother or guardian, he willunconsciously form his first conceptionof right and wrong.

For instance: “I’m a stinker. Mydad’s a stinker, too. I’m like Dad. Mymother says so!” Peter was six yearsof age when he made that statementPeter’s parents, both fine young peoplewho had had every advantage of good

 background, money, and education,were divorced when he was one yearold. The court had awarded the child’scustody to the mother and also arrangedthat she should receive sufficient remun-eration to support both the child andherself. In a short time, the fathermarried again. As sometimes happensin cases of this type, the mother, havingno outlet for her emotions other thanthrough the child, began comparingPeter and his little mannerisms withthose of his father, and because resent-ment for what she considered herwretched life was continually foremost

in her consciousness, those comparisonswere of the derogatory type.

As the years passed, the child beganto look for these emotional outbursts,which were now accompanied by aslap if he was within reach or the ne-cessity of dodging something thrown,if at a distance. This to Peter seemedto be a wonderful game, and he con-tinually tried to find ways and means of bringing on an “explosion.”

 Naturally, no human organism could,over an indefinite period, withstand de-mands such as these. When Peter wasseven years old, his mother was toldthat she had “nervous prostration.” Itwas also decided, for her, that Peter

would be better off in a good boardingschool. His stay at the first school wasnone too happy, and it became neces-sary to make a change from one board-ing school to another on an average ofonce per year thereafter.

At the age of thirteen, Peter was award of the Juvenile Courts. He hadstolen and wrecked three automobiles.The reason he gave for his actions was:“It’s a wonderful game I’m playingwith the Cops.”

“A wonderful game!” That was the

same reaction he had developed as hegrew from babyhood to boyhood. Areaction caused directly by the type of

 parental control  exercised in his case.Was he, then, to be censured if, duringhis later years, he followed those thingswhich were part of his understandingof right and wrong? an understandingtaught in his own home?

 B e r t

Then, there was the case of Bert. Bert at the age of nineteen was a mur

derer.  He had shot and killed a police-man.Bert at sixteen was a senior in high

school and in line for a scholarship. Inthe same class was another studentnamed  Nancy.  Nancy, too, was six-teen. Bert and Nancy lived just a fewstreets apart and had known each othersince infancy. Bert’s folks were poorand Bert carried papers morning andnight so that he could help make thingsa little easier for his mother. He waswhat might be called a “model son.”

 Nancy’s folks were among those whohad a good business and a large income.Her father and mother, up to this time,had never objected to his escorting herto the high school dances, the movies,and the young people’s parties.

 Nancy and Bert had a secret whichthey never told even the closest of theirfriends. About the time when theywere ten, it was agreed between themthat some day they would marry. The passing of six years had not altered thatagreement in the least. They still

wanted to marry; in fact, they must  get married at once.

A new family had moved into Nancy’s neighborhood. The nineteenyearold son of this family was con-sidered by Nancy’s parents to be amuch more suitable companion for her, both from the lineage angle and the fi-nancial standing. So, Nancy had beentold to stop seeing Bert. To make cer-tain of this her parents began drivingher to school and calling for her after-wards. They also kept her secluded inher room each evening for a month. Atthe end of that time she was given per-mission to go to one of the junior parties with the new neighbor, but onlyafter the parents had been assured thatBert would not be there.

But  Bert was there, and, unseen by Nancy’s escort who at the moment wasinvolved in a flirtation with the host-ess’s daughter, he whisked Nancy awayin his “selfrebuilt” car.

As the night wore on they pushedacross the California state line into Nevada. There, before the first personauthorized to perform weddings, Nancy

 became the wife of Bert.A twoday honeymoon, which

seemed to portend all manner of good,followed. Then money gave out andthe couple started back home to begintheir new life together. As they againcrossed the California line, two State policemen drew their motorcyclesalongside the car and asked to see Bert’sdriving license.

 Nancy was taken home to her par-ents who immediately procured an an-nulment of her marriage. Bert was

 placed under arrest and charged with“kidnapping” and “contributing to aminor’s delinquency.”

Bert was brought to trial, because Nancy’s parents refused to withdrawtheir complaint, and convicted. Heserved two and onehalf years of thetime given him in one of the prisonswhich housed hardened criminals.There he learned to fear all people,especially the police.

A parole was given him, but becauseof his prison record he was unable tofind work. Bert had a few dollars leftso he decided to buy a gun and endit all. After procuring the gun, withsix shells thrown in, Bert saw a car

 parked alongside the curb which lookedvery much like his old “jalopy,” so heopened the door and sat down to thinkout his situation, laying the gun on theseat beside him.

He had been seated there only a fewminutes when a policeman walked up

and asked: “Hello, son, what are youdoing?” As Bert described it, his re-sponse was automatic, brought about bythe great fear of police he had learnedwhile in prison. He reached for thegun on the seat alongside of him, andkilled the officer with a blast of six

 bullets.Yes, Bert was a murderer, but look-

ing behind that fact, is it not evidenttha t “parental delinquency” constitutedthe real cause?

 P a r e n ta l E d u c a tio n

W hat can be done about it? Themost logical answer is “educate the parents.” And right here we are con-fronted with a condition which as ageneral rule is not taken into considera-tion when dealing with parental groupinstruction. Namely, the emotional

 problem of the individual pa rent in re-lation to the child.

Experience has indicated that par-ents will gain intellectually by attend-ing a program of “parental education.”But experience also indicates that someof these parents, because of lack of emo-

tional balance, are unable to put intooperation those things which they learnand understand intellectually.

The emotionally maladjusted parentis unable to meet the child on a groundof common understanding, and it isfrom homes having such “parental con-trol” that socalled juvenile delinquencystems. It is evident, then, that somemethod must be devised whereby theemotionally maladjusted parent (eventhough that parent is unaware of thecondition) may be helped to matureemotionally.

Up to this time all effort, with thatobjective in view, has been confined tothe parents of today. Those who will be the parents of tomorrow are entirelyneglected. They are permitted to de-velop as did the little girl who was“never bom ” but “just grew.” Thenafter the emotional complex has devel-oped, llsurgery is  recommended” to re-move the cause.

In dealing with juvenile delinquency,the matter should be approached as acondition requiring longrange plan-ning. Down this street is the “What Not” club, a place where boys and girlsmeet. Along the next street is the “TriY” house used for the same purpose.

In the next block is a church which hasa brand new modernistic building forthe exclusive use of the youth of today.Wherever we turn we see evidence of“youth consciousness.” All these at-tractions are for the express purpose ofkeeping our youth off the street andthus preventing juvenile delinquency.

But there our efforts cease. Insteadof guiding the unfoldment of the in-clinations of youth, their prefermentsand abilities, we let the child drif t alongan uncharted course  which invariably permits its emotional development to

 be either retarded or overemphasized.Too often parents do not comprehend

the viewpoint of youth in confrontingits problems. Here is an example:

Instead of explaining to a worriedyoung man (or woman) that the resultof the physical examination, which hehas just passed, eliminates the possibil-ity of his having the same afflictionwhich caused the death of his grand- parents, we permit the child to con-tinue to be influenced by remarks whichsuggest that, even though he is not af-flicted with the grandparents’ diseasenow, or does not get it in the future, hewill in all probability pass the diseasealong to his children. Thus we sow theseed for future emotional instabilitywhen the parenthood stage is reached.

The Youth of Today constitutes a fer-tile ground for ideas which will bringinto being the sturdy, emotionally sta-

 ble, and intellectual Parents of Tomor-row. W hy not, then, start a preventa-tive campaign against “parental delin-quency” by teaching the child of todayhow to be a “real” parent of tomorrow?

This can be accomplished by secur-ing the services of one trained in psy-chotherapy for each center  where chil-dren meet. The counselor by beingavailable at all times and meeting theyouth as their friend would be in a position to immediately “spot” thosewho might need guidance, without thechild being aware of such observation.

CONFIDENCE OF THE INNER SELF

h e   feeling of confidenceis closely related to thatof contentment. To beconfident is to be sure ofone’s place. Confidenceis u s u a l l y related toknowledge and posses-

sions. If one has a thingto do, confidence in biowing how to do it correctly is oftenconsidered half the task of accomplish-ment. Possession of health and securityare in themselves a phase of confidence.Lack of confidence, on the other hand,is usually a matter of having no knowl-edge with which to handle a situationimmediately facing us. Such knowledgeis sometimes obtainable and is onlylacking because of failure of the indi-vidual to have made the effort to attain

a degree of knowledge sufficient to pro-vide confidence.

Insecurity is a great foe of confi-dence. To be unable to have anyfoundation upon which to stand—tofeel insecure in every movement is ofcourse a constant irritating force which

tends to undermine confidence. To re-late confidence to possessions, usuallythose of health and money, is a natu-ral impulse, but not always a true one.This is illustrated by the fact thatthere are times when possession ofthese things is not an indication ofabsolute confidence. People with wealthand health sometimes lack confidenceand feel as insecure as the individualwho has no possessions.

Confidence, then, cannot always berelated to physical and material pos-

sessions, but it is related to a true con-cept of value. He who has confidenceeither knows what he is doing or isseriously attempting to find out how todo it. Furthermore, he has establishedfor himself a sense of values that can-not be shaken by any material or physi-cal change in himself or his environ-ment. It is not unusual to read of ex-amples of outstanding courage. Ind i-viduals who might ordinarily bethought of as lacking in courage, whoactually appear to be undecided inmany of their actions, sometimes evi-dence extreme courage in a time ofstress. Such courage seems  to be theability or reaction of the individual to bring to the surface and to manifest inhis actions  and words the very strong-est traits of confidence.

It seems strange that an individualin a crisis can suddenly show thesehabits or a behavior pattern of abso-lute confidence. The answer to thereason for such behavior is to lookdeeper within the individual; to look,in fact at the inner self, at the ego orsoul, which is after all the final orabsolute manifestation of individual being. The inner self, that segment of being which is a component of life itselfor an attribute of the soul, is relatedto all other phases or forms of life. Thisinner self, then, is a part of our abso-lute existence. By this phrase it ismeant to convey the idea that all lifeis a phase of one source. Life mani-fests throughout the universe. If weaccept as a fundamental premise thatthere is a Supreme Being, and there-fore a supreme knowledge in exist-ence, we also can draw the conclusionthat all manifestation of that being isa segment thereof.

In the Rosicrucian philosophy it isaccepted as a fundamental premisethat each manifestation of life is a seg-ment of this fundamental Divine force.Each individual, then, is in a sense asegment of the Divine. In th at sensethe inner self is related harmoniouslyto all other manifestations of self.

The final purpose of man on a basisof this theory is his final and ultimateawareness of his own potentialities andof his own godliness. When this isrealized, man has come to the ultimate

 perfection for which he was destined.In his physical existence, however,

modified and changed by his physical perceptions and objective thinking, heis frequently unaware of the poten-tialities within his own being. To bringthis to the surface—to become awareof the inner self and its potentialitiesis, in the sense of these premises, the

ultimate aim of existence and the pur- pose of life.

There are times when man lets downthe barrier of his objective faculties andallows the manifestation of this innerself to make an imprint upon his con-sciousness. Many have experienced theworking of intuition, the seeming abil-ity to have obtained knowledge, some-times even prophetically, that comesfrom the inner self. These are indica-tions of the working of the allknowingmind within and through the inner be-

ing. This inner self is therefore, in asense, complete and final in its knowl-edge, but its expression is not alwaysfree from our own objective activitiesand thinking. In any case, particularlyif an emotional adjustment or othercrisis seems to make all objectiveknowledge insignificant, the threshold between objective consciousness andthe inner self is lowered, and there

 passes into the state of behavior theguidance or manifestation of this innerself. Courage unexpectedly expressed,the absolute confidence to carry out an

almost impossible task, are illustrationsof the working of this principle.

The inner self is always confident.It has no question as to the lack of final

 purpose or the eventual end of being.The inner self is complete, whole, andrelated to all other knowledge at alltimes. Therefore, the confidence thatis the confidence of the Divine Mindof the Creator, is resident within our

 being. Its expression is one of abso-lute knowledge and power once we letit take control. In the cases of crises

this has frequently been evidenced.Men in battle or time of war havedemonstrated acts of courage whichthey themselves would never havedreamed of in the course of their ordi-na ry patterns of behavior. In almostany disaster there are people who ac-complish acts such as normally theywould never have considered to be a

 par t of their regular behavior pattern.Men and women have entered burning

 buildings to save others, sometimes noteven of their own immediate family.

The psychological explanation ofsuch actions is that the emotional pres-sure of the moment has set aside the

objective barriers which we more orless unconsciously build up in our ownthinking. These objective thoughts areour own conclusions. They are relatedto a degree to thoughts of selfpreserva-tion, to the limitations of our normalthinking. If an emotional adjustm entseems to break them down, there comesto the front the confidence and surenessof knowledge and eventual purpose tha tis an expression of the inner self andmomentarily takes possession of our behavior.

The fact is that man can and will, ifhe desires, develop the ability to placemore and more reliance upon the store-house of knowledge within himself.Man was never destined, insofar as afinality was concerned, to be dependent

completely upon his objective thinking.Just as he can in an emotional crisisdraw upon power and confidence whichare beyond his ordinary rationalthought processes, so can he graduallydevelop the ability to draw upon thissame force in daytoday living. Thedevelopment of confidence, then, whichin turn is the key to contentment, isthe unfoldment of the ability to relyupon the power already in us, uponthe accumulated knowledge and experi-ence of the inner self.

ineralogy   to the layman means something techni-cal and is considered asubject to be studied incollege, by engineers or

geologists only. This samelayman will pick up peb-

 bles on the seashore andadmire them, and will

look at mountains and rivers and won-der at their grandeur, little realizingthat, in a way, he is studying  mineralogy.

Mineralogy as a hobby is fascinatingin many ways, and lends itself to everytype of mind. Many people make col-lections of pebbles, rocks and odd-shaped stones. How much more inter-

esting such a practice, if one knew justa little about stones. When traveling,more enjoyment can be had if one isable to interpret the scenery and under-stand how it came to be. This, of course,would mean some knowledge of geol-ogy, but as all rocks are made up ofminerals, geology is part of mineralogy.

In collecting minerals and studyingthem, the student may gradually learnthat natural laws are involved in form-ing minerals and rocks, and, in a largersense, mountains and valleys. There is

no end to this hobby and yet even its beginning is interesting and instructive.

To the Rosicrucian, such study is particularly intriguing, since he willfind examples of many of the lawsgiven in our lessons. As he becomesinterested in geology and the formationof various parts of the earth, he will beimpressed more deeply with the lawsof nature and the greatness of God—with infinity and the minute perfectionof detail.

A number of years ago, a delegatefrom an Eastern state, at a conventionof AMORC, said that it was worth thediscomfort of passing through the desertof Imperial Valley to be present at theconvention. And so it would be with

other matters of great interest. If oneis interested in geology, for instance,even though slightly, one can becomecompletely engrossed in the wondersof the Arizona desert, the ColoradoRiver, the sand dunes west of the river,the fertile river deposits of ImperialValley, and the Salton Sea. Buildingthe story of how the various sceneshave become as they are is always re-warding.

Mineralogy, too, is a hobby that can be indulged in with no expense; for

minerals and formations of some kindmay be found in every place. On theother hand, one may spend as muchas he wishes, if he chooses to collectminerals from all parts of the world,or if he makes his collection of emer-alds, rubies, diamonds, or other gemsand precious stones.

A trip anywhere by auto, will al-ways yield at least one mine en route,and a stop will prove the Company gladto receive visitors for a look aroundand usually willing to share somespecimens of minerals. One summer Itook a vacation trip from Michigan toQuebec, along the St. Lawrence Riverand back through Maine, New Hamp-shire, Vermont, and Western NewYork. The Canadian Geological De-

 partment, in Ottawa, provided me with

information concerning mines on ornear the route. Also, I contacted theState Geologist’s office in Augusta,Maine. As a result, very interestingdetours and stops were made at asbestosmines, marble, and granite quarries,

Specimenswere secured at each place and in-formation gleaned from each stop.Later, after giving a talk about thistrip to a group of businessmen, Ilearned that several in the audiencehad been over that very route; yet hadseen none of these things. They all ad-mitted their trip would have been morerewarding had they known of the minesand quarries.

There are many ways in which onemay enjoy mineralogy as a hobby.Specimens may be picked up here andthere, studied at leisure, and classifiedentirely for one’s own amusement. Or,one may join a group, form a studyclub and meet occasionally to discussand trade specimens. Once a month or

so, such a group could plan an instruc-tive and pleasant field trip.Minerals and rocks may be “dead,”

inanimate things; yet the student willfind an interesting, real, and live his-tory behind each specimen.

development of manas a thinking animal 

 began with his abilityto make sounds whichconveyed ideas andthus influenced the

conduct of his fellowmen—that is, with his

 power of speech. Andso, at the very dawnof human culture therewas an age of sound,an age in which man, because of his com-mand of sound, accomplished much ofwhat he set out to do.

And now, millions of years later,through the development of soundre-cording devices, such as the phonographand the sound film which gives voice tomotion pictures, and through the de-velopment and perfection of the radio,which carries the human voice aroundthe world with the speed of light andamplifies the merest whisper into astentorian roar, the human voice ac-quires tremendous power to influencethe destiny of mankind.

It is related that the Children ofIsrael marched around Jericho shoutinguntil the walls fell down. And centurieslater, because the radio took his voiceinto the homes of the people, FranklinD. Roosevelt was elected President ofthe United States by the biggest major-ity ever given to a President, despitethe almost unanimous opposition of thenewspapers of the country.

During the ages that elapsed betweenthese two events, man was busy perfect-ing the techniques of the arts whosematerials of expression lie outside the person of the artist, and therefore heneglected to develop a science of voicecontrol. A little reflection will indicatethe specific cause of this neglect. The

arts whose materialsof expression lie with-in the person of theartis t — dancing, sing-ing, and speaking—were the first to be de-veloped by man. Be-cause they required

no outside materialsfor their accomplish-ment, they came to beregarded as “natural”and the legend grewthat a person was “en-dowed by na ture”with ability to express

himself through these arts or else wasdenied this ability “by nature” andthere was nothing he could do about it.And so, the foundation of a scientificapproach to these aits was not laid

down until after man had perfected,through the centuries, the sciences thatgovern the arts which find their mate-rials of final expression outside the per-son of the artist—painting, sculpture,and architecture.

In the development of these arts, theancients conveyed their feeling for

 beauty through architecture and sculp-ture; and their magnificent creationswere based upon definite laws of formand proportion. Though they capti-vated the attention of the world for

many centuries, these arts left little tothe imagination and, curiously enough,they failed to stir men as profoundly asdid the arts of the musician and theorator that languished in comparativeobscurity.

During the Renaissance when paint-ing, design, and other arts of decoration began to vie with sculpture and archi-tecture for the attention of men, therewas still that lack of power to stir theimagination, but the few singers andorators that flourished in those days had

yond that of all other artists. And thesecret is not hard to find. It lies in the

 profound truth that, to be truly great,any art must inspire its beholders them-selves to be artists, moved by the sameimpulses and emotions that govern themaster artist. And so we are beginningto realize that no matter how manymaterials of expression of any art lieoutside the person of the artist, theCHIEF materials out of which he cre-ates his magic are those that lie withinhimself. For it is these materials thatlie within the soulpersonality of allmen which must be kindled, if art isto influence human conduct.

It is this secret that explains the in-fluence of the singer and the orator dur-ing all the ages when the art of using the human voice w^as thought to be

merely a “natura l accomplishment.” Itis this secret that explains the power ofthese artists now  that the use  of soundhas given to the human voice a theateras large as the earth and an audienceas great as the peoples that inhabit it.And now that such great   power has

 been placed at the disposal of the hu -man voice, we are be*nnning to realizethat, to influence their fellows, somevoices have greater dynamic power thanothers. We are discovering that eventhe purest intentions are often misrep-resented by an unpleasant voice, andwe want to know the reason for this. In other words, can we CONTROL thehuman voice so that it can be made toconvey more exactly what the possessorof that voice intends?

 A ir in V ib ra tio n

Before we can undertake to controlthe voice, it is necessary to understand

 just what the human voice IS—how itis produced. Only then can we hope tocontrol its quality.

The human voice is basically a col-umn of vibrating air that passes from

the lungs through the larnyx, strikesagainst the voicebands, flows upthrough the chambers of the head,where its quality and resonance are determined, and then issues from the

e ,  mouth and nose to be heard as song or Rostcrucian  speech.

 Dtgest   While the individual may not be March   aware of the fact, each tone in his voice1949  is usually composed of two qualities,

each of which is distinct from the other.These are called the UNDERTONE andthe OVERTONE.

The undertone is formed when thesound waves strike against the tissues inthe lower levels of the head. An exag-

gerated undertone may be the result ofenlarged tonsils, a catarrhal condition,or even of a head so formed that thereis not sufficient resonance space abovethe level of the roof of the mouth.Whenever there is an excessive ac-cumulation of waste matter in the reso-nance chambers of the head, the soundwaves vibrate only in the vicinity ofthe larynx itself and have a very un- pleasant quality. In fact, the quality ofthe undertone is always disagreeable.It is flat, rasping and “throaty,” almostdevoid of resonance and hence utterly

incapable of expressing fine shades offeeling and therefore of arousing keenemotional response in the listener. Inits higher pitches, the undertone issimilar to the “caw” of a bird; and inits lower pitches, it resembles the growlof a bear. This is why a voice that

 passes directly from the larynx to thelips is not pleasant to hear.

The OVERTONE is produced afterthe tone leaves the roof of the mouthand while it is passing through thevarious indentations in the tissue and bony structure of the upper part of the

head. Taken together, these tissues and bony cavities (sinuses) constitute amarvelous instrument of resonance bythe understanding use of which thesinger or speaker can so control thequality of his voice as to make it con-vey his innermost feelings and arousethose feelings in his listener.

Until recent years in cultivating thevoice, too much attention was paid tothe little sound box called the larynxand too little attention was paid to whathappens to a tone AFTER it leaves thelarynx. Although it was well knownthat the quality of the tone emitted bya horn depends on the size, shape andmaterial of the resonance chamberthrough which the tone passes AFTERit leaves the throat of the horn, mostof us did not consider what happens tothe tone of the human voice after itleaves the human throat. The scienceof voice control is the controlling ofthe OVERTONE quality of the voice

and this control is possible only whenthe resonance chambers in the head arefree from obstruction and when thevoice is directed through them AFTERit leaves the larynx.

Overtone quality is dependent upontwo factors: (1) the shape of the head, particularly the upper pa rt of it, and(2) the way in which the singer orspeaker makes use of the natural cham- bers of resonance in the upper par t ofthe head.

The shape of the head is somethingthat any of us can do very little about.Without doubt, our primitive ancestorwith protruding jaw and flat head,emitted sounds not very different fromthe growls of the animals about him.During the millions of years in whichman was learning to use his jaw lessand less and his brain more and moreto procure food, the jaw receded andthe skull raised and widened to accom-modate the larger brain. The shape ofthe head changed from that of a tri-angle with the base line across the jaws and the apex at the crown of thehead, to the inverted triangle we seetoday with the base line across the browsand the apex at the point of the chin.And, during these centuries, man’svoice was changing from a growl tohuman speech, capable of conveyingideas and emotions to his fellows. Un-til the shape of the upper part of man’shead had changed, his voice could benothing but a growl; but the alteredshape of the head provided not onlymore space for the enlarged brain butalso resonance chambers that producethe overtone quality of the voice andmake it capable of expressing fineshades of meaning and emotion.

Let us examine this mechanism of 

resonance a little more closely. Themain overtone chambers consist of threesets of sinuses and the channels thatconnect them. The sinuses are depres-sions in the bony structure of the skull

itself and the connecting chambers arefolds and channels in the tissues. Un-less these sinuses and connecting cham- bers are obstructed with mucus andother waste material that accumulates because of unhygienic living or disease,they will vibrate when the voice is di-rected through them. It is not necessarythat the sinuses be entirely filled withwaste for their usefulness to be im- paired. Sediment clinging to their wallswill muffle or deaden the sound vibra-tions in the same manner as hangingsin a room deaden the resonance of anysound produced in that room. . . .

Many students of voice—either thesinging or the speaking voice—make themistake of trying to train the voice foronly one use, either singing or speak-ing. If they are training the voice forsinging, they seem to believe that theycan use it properly in song and improp-erly in speaking. Others think theyshould use the voice properly in speak-ing but not in singing. A moment’s re-flection will indicate the falsity of eitherattitude. Improper habits of voice con-trol, in song or in speech, will impairthe ability of the student to use thevoice properly when he wishes to do so.There is no real reason why either thesinging or the speaking voice should bedenied the ability to express most deep-ly and accurately the emotions felt bythe user of tha t voice. What is desiredis the proper utility of the human voice —whether it be used for singing orspeaking, or for both.

r e   you willing to create

your destiny in the im-age and likeness of yourdreams? If your dreamsare true to you, they willcome true. Good or bad,the r e a l i t y of yourdreams becomes the ac-tuality of your life.

Be sure that the foundation is capa- ble of supporting the structure. Be surethat your plan provides for stresses andstrains, and that it is sufficiently flexibleto allow for expansion. Be sure that the

materials you use in the structure ofyour life have been tested in the labo-ratory of your experience and bearyour seal of approval. You are the in-spector. You are the architect. You arethe master of your own destiny.

Approach life with love in yourheart, harmony in your personality,and confidence in the Supreme Archi-tect. Be ever conscious of the Presencethat smiles upon your endeavor. God isyour strength and your inspiration.God is your light. The temple of yoursoul is built upon the foundation of

your love. It is your life. Its beauty isrevealed in the light of your love, re-flected from your inner being.

Don’t follow the concept of my AuntMel. She was afraid of life and dis-trusted her fellow beings. She attendedchurch but never learned that God islove. Widowed comparatively early inlife, she inherited a comfortable for-tune. She shunned her own family,fearing that they might take her money

from her. Every expenditure, however

small, called forth the exclamation, “I’lldie in the poorhouse!”

She could not accept truth. It wastoo drab. Untruth, with high lights of

 promise appealed to her. So unwise in-vestments caused her fortune to dwin-dle. In her old age she lived with dif-ferent members of her family, each ofwhom supplied her with the comfortsof home but insisted on strict adherenceto her doctor’s orders. She resented thisinterference and expressed her indigna-tion to the neighbors, suggesting mo-

tives and casting doubt upon the goodintentions of those who had only herwelfare in mind.

The harvest of her life yielded in theimage and likeness of the seeds she had been sowing for a half century. Thelast relative she lived with permittedher to eat what she liked and do as she

 pleased; so she found happiness at last.As might be expected, it was not long before she needed hospitalization,which she would not willingly pay for.This relative willingly agreed to holdthe residue of her fortune so that she

might take the pauper’s oath in orderto gain admittance to the county hos- pital. In the last chapter of her life sheclosed her eyes, for the last time, in the poorhouse of her dreams and was laidto rest in the potter’s field of her owncreation.

Would you willingly choose to be anAunt Mel in your approach to thislovely experience life reveals as a privi-lege? Be an Uncle Joe. He was Aunt

Mel’s husband, her exact antithesis.Where she feared life he believed in it.Where she distrusted people he saw hisspiritual counterpart and he loved whathe saw. His confidence in people wasthe reflection of the confidence that re-posed in his own soul.

Uncle Joe started life the hard way,as a farmer, back in Kentucky. Whenhe discovered greater talents within hisown being, he developed those talentsand expanded them in service to hisfellow men. God smiled upon his en-deavors and Uncle Joe became prosper-ous. He rose above the poverty of hisyouth, but never lost his humble per-spective.

In his expanded vision new doors ofopportunity opened to him, each onegolden. He was not always repaid incash for his work, nor did he expect tobe. He was grateful for each oppor-tunity to serve the people he loved. Hisservices took many forms: the payingof a medical or funeral bill, helping awidow to help herself, procuring foodfor hungry children, playing SantaClaus at Christmas time, sitting upwith a sick friend to give him courage,or providing transportation to a lonely

father to visit his family. He was neverso engrossed in his personal affairs thathe could not take time or whatever wasneeded to relieve distress. His businessdid not suffer because he was “abouthis Father’s business.” The bread he“cast upon the waters” returned to him.

Uncle Joe never prayed for materialpossessions, yet he attracted them tohimself in abundance. Money in hispossession was a usable commodity.“The love of money is the root of allevil,” not the money itself. Money wasas much a part of his life as his ownpersonality. It was his life that flowedn the channels of service. It was hisife that demonstrated his worthiness to

hear, “Well done, thou good and faith-ful servant.”

Perhaps Uncle Joe heard the sweetmelody of that voice as an echo fromhis own soul, “Inasmuch as ye do itunto the least of these ye do it also untome.” He served God unconsciouslywhile serving man consciously. The

ove of God can only become a powern the life of man through his service toG d’ t d b i

Uncle Joe’s attitude of humble grati-tude and appreciation for the privilegeof service was his constant expressionof thanksgiving directed to the Source.

 No other prayer can reveal so muchtruth, nor accomplish so much service,nor attract the essentials required to

 perform that service.

The money acquired by Uncle Joe’sloving service made his life rich, butthe love of that legacy made Aunt Mel’slife barren. He used it freely and itmultiplied, while she hoarded it and itdissipated. The money tha t broughthim complete satisfaction in service andfriendships brought her only miseryand loneliness. The money that carried

him to the heights paved the way to a pauper’s grave for poor Aunt Mel.

Each of these people had the sameopportunities. Each created the struc-ture of his life from the plans reflectedin his consciousness. Each created hisdestiny in the image and likeness ofhis dreams. Each made his dreamscome true, because they were true.

You, too, want your dreams to cometrue. Perhaps, above all, you want ahome with a congenial mate and chil-dren of your own to share your lifeexperience. A woman ascends theheights in recreating after her ownkind. No man ever tastes the fullflavor of life until he becomes a father.

 No man and no woman can conceivethe fullness and richness of completeliving until they have experienced thelove they share in the “marriage madein Heaven.” God intended that manand woman should live together in har-mony, participating in love that is in-comprehensible in its power to revealand to unfold the best qualities in theirinner beings. We know that love isgood because it originates with God.

You have inherited talents that de-mand release. The secret urge in yournature clamors to be heeded. You mustexpand those talents, make them a partof your selfexpression so that your lifemight flow in the channels of humanservice. By holding your talents inabeyance, you stifle them. To crush

those talents is to hold your soul in bondage. Your soul demands freedomf i f d f i

freedom of unfoldment. You cannot“hide your light under a bushel” andyet have it shine. More than that, yourtalents must be perfected so as to add bril liance to your light.

The talents you inherited indicate

your mission in this life. To fulfill yourmission is to live fully and completely,experiencing satisfaction and pride ofaccomplishment.

The tree of life bears fruit in abund-ance for all. You are free to share thatfruit, in full justification for the com- plete satisfaction of your every need, bu t you must pay the price in full forservices rendered. You must barterservice for service.

Talents that are exercised freely bring peace and contentment. Talents

that are denied expression leave anaching void. God assigned your missionin life. He provided you with talents tofulfill tha t mission. The abundance offruit on the tree of life will sustain youin performing that mission. God is asclose as your own voice and as eageras your own soul to give encourage-ment and direction. You must do therest. You are the spark that ignites theflame.

Don’t mistake ambition for talent.Ambition might stem from the desireto please someone else. It might be the

result of a wish for fame or fortune, orit might be no more than an indolentexpectation of good pay for easy work.

Know your talents and develop themto the full. There will be difficultiesand problems, many of them, but theywill beset you for the purpose of ex-

 panding your courage, initiative, andselfreliance. Don’t falter. God willnot let you down, of that you may beassured.

You  may be criticized for your

dreams, but don’t be humiliated. Re-member, the steamboat was once Ful-ton’s folly, but it carried our forces tovictory across the waterways of theworld. It has been the life of com-merce for a century.

All great dreamers have been scoffedat. For more than a half century oneschool of thought dreamed of bridgescrossing San Francisco Bay and theGolden Gate. The other school, even

after construction began, insisted thait could not be done. Both bridges have been carrying traffic for ten years nowwithout any sign of weakness.

It is quite true that the bridges couldnot be built at the time they were

originally prophesied. The dreamerwere not impractical, however. Theydid not say, “immediately.” They said“eventually.” Engineering techniquehad to advance to cope with the problems involved. Steelmaking techniqueand equipment also had to advanceWhen all was in readiness the dreamswere transcribed on paper and the com pleted structures took form.

Your dream must take the samecourse. It need not be transcribed on

 paper, but it must take form in yourmind as a clear picture. You mus

know what you want, maintain thecourage of your convictions and throwall your forces into the battle to attainyour objective. Any weakling candream but only the strong can makedreams come true.

Every act, whether it be objective osubjective, is preceded by a dream or amental image. In the course of evolution that dream may take on the formof a skyscraper, a locomotive, a hill ocorn, a basket of groceries, or a freshcoat of paint in your bathroom okitchen. It evolves from a preconceived plan. System and order is the law othe universe. There are no accidentsAsk anyone who drives a motor vehiclefor a large corporation.

Making your dreams come true isexercising intelligence. You are usingyour energy in satisfying your creativeurges. There is no pentup force demanding release. You need no relievalve. You need no escape. You doneed relaxation, entertainment and play, of course; that is part of the en joyment of living, and it does not as

sume such form as would characterizean escape from the unrealities of drabexistence.

This is a success story—to tell all ofit, perhaps would be a breach of confi-dence, but that part concerning the

fulfillment of an inner urge we feelcertain this member would want othersto know. Forced a year ago to give upan office job because of overstrain, thismember wras momentarily confrontedwith a period of uncertainty and in-activity. Then he remembered some-thing he had always wanted to do. Hewrites: “I have a friend, an artist andart instructor, who knew that for a longtime I had wanted to paint a Chineselady on an antiqued tilttop table. ‘Whydon’t you paint your table,’ she sug-

gested. I was never able even to draw

or sketch the most simple picture; yetthe latter part of March I started, madea sketch and painted the table top—agraceful Chinese lady in oil.

“All the time I was painting, an-other picture kept coming into my con-sciousness—a picture of ocean wavesdashing into a cove surrounding a pointof land on which sat an old fishermansmoking his pipe. My friend sat be-fore the painting and gazed. Finallyshe said: ‘That is not amateur work.’The pictures kept forming in my mindand with my friend’s encouragement, Ihave so far painted nine. The signifi-cance of it all to me, however, is thathad I continued to work, or merelytaken a leave of absence from the office,I should not have had time to develop

this latent ability. It is a blessing toknow that when one door closes thatanother always opens.”

Most readers of the  Digest,  evenwhen not members of the RosicrucianOrder, know that one of the ritualisticofficers of every Rosicrucian Temple isthe Vestal, a young girl between theages of thirteen and twentyone. She

symbolizes in the lodge “life, light, andlove,” as well as the conscience of everymember present. She takes her name,Colombe (colomb'), from the Latincolumba,  meaning dove.  Four times ayear, the Colombes of the SupremeTemple publish a little magazine, The   Dove,  which is called “the Colombes’ personal magazine.”

It is traditional that “When Colombespeaks, all shall be silent,” since fromthe Bosom of Conscience comes Truth.In this regard, a statement from a re-

From Germany has come a Germantranslation of Andreas Libavius’ Fama and Confession of the Brotherhood of  the Rosy Cross —Frankfurt, 1616. Thiswork was referred to in “From theArchives of the Past” in the January Digest.  It is the writing in which Li- bavius, still posing as a crit ic of theOrder, reverses himself and admits thatthe Order exists as a true brotherhoodand that much good is to be found in

The Amenhotep Shrine in Rosicru-cian Park is a favorite spot for medita-tion and a first attraction with visitors.Many are not familiar with the his-tory of its erection and so its recentanniversary passed quietly. It waserected in commemoration of the spe-cial initiation held for a party of somesixty American members of the Order,in Luxor, Egypt, on February 14, 1929.

Recently three fat scrapbooks detailingthe joumeyings of that pa rty were pre-sented to the Order, and this depart-ment was treated to a specially guidedtour of its own. The Shrine in the Parkthen is just short of coming of age.

A member in China comments on anearly monograph dealing with intui-tion, by telling of an experience thatoccurred in August of 1937 in Shang-hai. He was on shore leave but couldnot relax because of a premonition ofsomething unpleasant impending. Sud-denly, he was ordered back on duty.He continues: “My Russian chauffeurdrove full speed toward the famousShanghai Bund. As we came to oneof the main crossings, the light wentred.  At this moment, the sense of im-

 pending disaster that I could not shakeoff since morning, became almost un-

 bearable. I distinctly felt death—death

itself coming . . . fast from behind.Turning my head, I saw at about 700or 800 feet high, three bomber planesmaking a beeline for the Bund. Thelight was still red;  the planes were get-ting nearer and in such a position thatif a bomb got loose by accident (the

 planes were Chinese on their way toattack the old Japanese cruiser  Idzumo,moored near the Japanese Consulate). . . People had begun to appear fromeverywhere and were cheering wildlysince the planes were their own.

“My heart was in my mouth whensuddenly, clearly and distinctly abovethe confusion and shouting, a voicespoke to me, commandingly, irresisti- bly: ‘Do not stay there another sec-ond.’ ‘Step on  the gas,’ I shouted tothe amazed driver, and the car posi-tively jumped across the road, the onlyone to do so, in spite of the trafficofficer’s protest at our going against thelight. Scarcely had we reached theother side when virtual hell broke loose behind us—explosions, smoke, flyingstones, shrieks of pain.

“The car was violently pushed aheadfor a 100  feet, but there was no dam-age. W hat had happened? Simplywhat I thought might happen in sucha case. One of the planes had sustaineda hit from the Japanese cruiser gun-fire and one of the bombs had been

released and had fallen in the midstof that crowd of cars and people. Morethan 1,000 were killed outright, and allforeignowned cars were completelydemolished—all, that is, except mine.But for the providential warning, I, too,should have undoubtedly been amongthe casualties. You can well appreciatemy respect for intuition.”

A member tells of an interesting byproduct of her consideration of theRosicrucian teachings regarding themaking of wills and the disposition of

 property. “An elderly friend told me,the other day, she would leave me somecups and saucers which I admired. Isaid, ‘W hy wait till you die? If youdo, you will miss all the joy of seeingmy happiness.’ So she gave them tome immediately and later said, ‘Thosecups and saucers were doing me no

 point of war. Adjust the cause of dis-content and you remove the cause ofstrife. The adjustment must be madeto fit the individual. It all comes backto him.

Communities, states, nations, andgroups of nations have souls, personali-

ties, and expressions that are the com- posite of the individuals comprising thegroup. The individual cannot escaperesponsibility for the activities of thewhole. The more dissatisfied the indi-

viduals comprising the group, the moreviolent will be its reactions. The moreharmonious the members, the nearerthat group comes to the peace that pass

eth all understanding.The question resolves itself. It is not

so much a matter of whether or notyour dreams can or will come true.They must come true. It is an obliga-tion. You must establish complete ha r-mony within your own soulpersonality. You can experience this wellbeingonly when you are in harmony withGod. You can only work in harm onywith God when you are exercising thetalents you inherited to perform yourlife mission. It is the work God laid out

for you, and He will sustain you in its performance.Your dreams can come true, and they

will if they are true to you, but youmust make them come true.

Did you meet yourself in “Annoying Behaviors,” Rosicrucian Digest,

  Janu-ary 1949 issue? When the manuscript arrived, the editor herself read it withalertness, hoping to find or not to find some of her own shortcomings. The pur-

 pose of the article was to help those who wished to help themselves in cultivat-ing some of the finer points of living.

Since all things have a positive as well as a negative phase, there is a positiveside to behavior—the opposite of annoyance. Everyone who reads this musthave, not once but a number of times, experienced that strangely satisfying and pleasant feeling which comes as the result of some unsolicited and unexpectedservice to substantiate our wellbeing.

Here is a personal incident. It happened in Chicago during the days of thegreat depression. I spent a night in a barren, emergency dormitory of theY.W.C.A. I can still see the many cots lined up side by side and the haggard,

footsore women, of all ages, resting on them—footsore from tramping all day insearch of employment.

The next morning I went out for a few hours and left my suitcase standing beside my cot, unlocked and in full view, and thinking nothing of it. When Ireturned the suitcase was gone. I started searching, looking under the cot andother possible places. After a few minutes, a voice, coming from one of thecots, inquired, “Are you looking for something?”

“My suitcase,” I answered. “I left it standing beside my bed when I wentout this morning.”

The woman pointed toward a dresser. “I hid it under there; otherwise, youmight have come back and found it empty. I have slept in this place longenough to know.”

So while I was gone, this stranger, and an exceptionally haggardfaced oneat that, had undertaken to protect my property, without even knowing, ofcourse, as to who I was.

To my surprised gratitude, the woman responded, “It is nothing. Not anymore than I would have appreciated someone doing for me.”

Another recollection. On a windy day in North Dakota, when I was five atthe most, I came running across the fields carrying hot coffee and a sandwich,to a hired m an—a foreigner—plowing on my father’s farm. He paused to lookat me as his fingers, stiff with cold, fumbled with the cover on the lunch pail.“You shouldn’t run around bareheaded in a wind like this,” he cautioned, as hereached into his pocket for a red bandanna handkerchief. As he covered myhead, the protection felt comforting to my chilled ears. As he tied the bandannain a substantial knot under my chin, the awesomeness, in my child mind,

caused perhaps by his  young  and yet  fu lly bearded   face, dissolved and left amemorable impression on my consciousness.

I would like to receive reports, from all over the world, of spontaneous inci-dents concerning the welfare of others, experienced by Rosicrucians and nonRosicrucians. Do not just mention as having been benefited or cheered by adeed or a smile, but relate specific events, having motives similar to those men-tioned above. As promptly as you bring back to mind, and put on paper, suchincidents, mail them to the  Rosicrucian Digest.  It is hoped that a compilation(by the editor) of such human experiences might result in an inspirational arti-cle for the  Digest.
