THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION Confessions are heard on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 PM and anytime upon reasonable request. THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM First and third Sundays at 1:00 PM. Expectant parents may contact the parish office to arrange for the baptism seminar at 7:30 PM on the first Monday of the month to help them understand the beauty and responsibilities of the sacrament. Adults are baptized and confirmed at the Easter Vigil after completing the stages of the Rite of Christian Initiation. THE SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY Since Catholic marriage requires a time of preparation, arrangements should begin at least six months before the proposed date of the wedding to allow for the Marriage Preparation Program and Natural Family Planning (NFP). Registered, participating and contributing parishioners may contact the parish office to begin the process. PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK If you are planning to enter the hospital for surgery, experiencing a prolonged or serious illness, or are very weak due to advancement of age, call the parish office to arrange for the sacraments of reconciliation, communion and anointing at home, also available every Saturday morning at 9:00 AM Mass. Communal anointing of the sick is celebrated at Mass each April and October. Notify us or the Catholic chaplain at Good Samaritan, Helen Hayes and Nyack of any hospitalization so that we may be of assistance. Be sure to tell the admitting office that you are a Catholic patient and a member of St. Gregory Barbarigo parish. PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION CHAPEL is open all day and night for Eucharistic adoration and is located at the south end of the campus on Cinder Road in front of the parish house. Parishioners and friends are encouraged to become adorers or to stop in and spend some time in quiet prayer with the Lord. WELCOME The St. Gregory Barbarigo faith community warmly welcomes you. Please introduce yourself to Father LaMorte as you leave church so that, on behalf of the entire community we may greet you. You may register at the parish office and pick up an informational packet. Kindly notify us of any change of address.
St. Gregory Barbarigo parish is a Christian community of disciples in the Roman Catholic tradition, called by Jesus, united in Eucharistic worship and growing in faith, hope and love. Nourished through the sacraments and strengthened by God’s transforming love, we are empowered to know the gospel message and to witness it to others. As Christian stewards, we are thankful for God’s many gifts and we commit ourselves to share our time, talent and treasure in Christ-like service within our parish community and beyond. We seek God’s blessing and guidance to be faithful to this mission.

OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD
Does Roseanne Barr and other people in the news likeformer president Bill Clinton or even the previouslyunknown 20-year-old Philadelphia woman EmilyWeinman who faces several charges including two
counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, disorderlyconduct and resisting arrest following the incident at thebeach in Wildwood, NJ need to learn the act of contrition? Ihave been thinking about this recently and I am glad thatsomeone is putting this out there. Nobody knows how toapologize or express contrition anymore. So here is somewelcome wisdom from a Catholic upbringing, via MargaretRenklin of the New York Times. “One of the most useful thingsCatholic school taught me is the fundamental structure ofapology. We are all born with a powerful inclination for faultand failure. We lie. We treat others unkindly. We nurturewrongheaded notions because they make us feel a little bitbetter about our imperfect selves.
Among the higher profile cases, there is plenty tosuggest that almost no one in public life knows how to expressremorse. If you are a Catholic of a certain age, you grew upreciting the Act of Contrition every day, and you therebylearned some things about remorse. A child who learns thesewords learns that an apology consists of four parts: genuineremorse, the expectation of unpleasant but entirely deservedconsequences, a resolution not to commit the same erroragain, a sincere effort to avoid the circumstances that led tothe error in the first place. The moral imperative of the Act ofContrition has its limitations, of course, starting with thequestion of who gets to decide what might offend God. Theprayer is nevertheless a good basic template for somethingthat no longer seems basic at all: knowing how to clean up amess of your own making.
When a person causes egregious offense, theappropriate response isn’t damage control. The appropriateresponse is a genuine apology — not because you might getyour TV show back but because to acknowledge a mistake is toparticipate fully in the human community. We all mess up. Weall see through blinders. We all say hurtful things. We allnurture prejudices we don’t recognize in ourselves. It isn’tnecessary to think of these tendencies as being part of a sinfulnature to understand that they are endemic to human life. Even afull-throated apology won’t erase a colossal mistake. We will nevermake ourselves perfect. But we can try to make ourselves better, andthe culture we live in, too.”
I found it refreshing to read something so profoundin a newspaper that is not always favorable to our beliefs. There is hope for all of us, I suppose.

LAY DEANERY COUNCIL is a gathering ofrepresentatives from each of the 16 parish whomeet every four months with MonsignorEmmet Nevin, dean of Rockland to work closelyand share information and coordinate effortsthat will enhance and strengthen the quality of
Catholic life, worship, and service throughout the wholecounty. Father is looking for four people who might weinterested in helping. Four volunteers will mean attending thismeeting only once a year. If you can help, please call ourparish office.
PARISH FOUNDATION With the completion of both theTappan Zee Bridge and the Palisades Interstate Parkway in1956, Rockland County was discovered and the great exodusfrom New York City turned north and over the Hudson River. Many of the newcomers came from predominantly Catholicareas of Manhattan and the Bronx and soon, the churches ofNorth Rockland were no longer adequate. Most of the youngCatholic parents moving from the city had a parochialeducation and they wanted the same for their children. It soonbecame apparent that the wisest course of action would be topress for the establishment of a new parish. Finally in 1961,with the purchase of choice land, the 55 acre Burck estate westof Garnerville, Cardinal Spellman made a decision to establisha new parish which would be named in honor of the recentlycanonized Gregory Cardinal Barbarigo. That property cost$185,000. On Friday, June 16, Father Thomas J. Darby, aprofessor of history at Cathedral College was appointed as thefirst pastor. Mass was celebrated the very next day at theformer Forester’s Hall on Railroad Avenue which had been amission church of St. Peter in Haverstraw. Mass was latermoved to the Lo-Tor Skating Rink and then to the BirchwoodCasino of Route 202 behind ShopRite. Next Sunday, we willobserve the 57th anniversary of our foundation. God has beengood to us and continues to shower His blessings upon thepeople who worship under the patronage of St. GregoryBarbarigo.
FATHER’S DAY will be observed next Sunday. On this day, we remember all of our fathers, living and deceased and offer the sacrifice ofthe Mass for them. In your contributionenvelope packet, you will see a special insertfor Father’s Day to enroll their names. These
may be placed in the Sunday offering. Additional envelopesare also in the narthex. Religious Father’s Day cards areavailable at the parish office.

FLAG DAY will be celebrated in the United States on Thursday, June 14. At 1:00 PM, the children from the regional school willparticipate in a ceremony and everyone from the parish is invited to attend. With the increase in patriotic spirit since the war in theGulf, it is especially fitting, as proud American citizens, to demonstrate your love for the flag. Please remember to fly your flag. Manytimes at a funeral, if the deceased was a veteran, the flag that drapes the coffin is presented to the family at the cemetery on behalfof the President of the United States and a grateful nation. Whatever happens to these flags? We would like to be able to use themhere at St. Gregory Barbarigo to fly on our flag staff in front of the regional school. Why not call the office and make arrangementsfor this wonderful opportunity to remember the dead in a tangible way?

EMERGENCY ACTION COMMITTEE has been advising Father on the best ways to keep our worshipers safe while they are at church.Although we cannot predict if, when or where a tragic event could take place, it is so necessary for all of us to take precautionarymeasures so as to ensure the safety and security of our priests, parishioners, students, employees and volunteers. It is a sadcommentary on our times that we must take these measures, but we have to be as proactive as we can be in addressing what hasbecome a reality for all of us. This committee will meet on Thursday of this week at 7:30 in the OLV conference room.
