OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD

As soon as the summer travel is over and everyone isback from vacation, we will resume the general phaseof the parish campaign, Renew + Rebuild. We aredrawing near to a successful completion. Thanks to the

generosity of 303 donors, we have raised a significantamount of money which will allow us to make importantrepairs and upgrades to our church, school and rectory. Wehave already begun the process of replacing the roof on thegymnasium. To be sure that every member of our parish hasbeen given the proper opportunity to participate in thishistoric campaign, we will be conducting a second appeal atthe end of September and I will be grateful for theopportunity to address the worshiping members of ourparish one more time. If you have already made a gift to thecampaign, you can still help by encouraging otherparishioners to consider a pledge commitment. We have3,000 families in St. Gregory. Equal sacrifice is important togrowing in our faith. Towards our goal of $1.5 million, wehave received gifts and pledges totaling $1,385,335 or 95%.This includes a number of very large gifts and quite a fewsmaller ones, but the average amount is an awesome $4,600.Again, I express my sincere gratitude to all those who havedonated already. As successful as the first phase has been, itis just the beginning. It gives us credibility and pride andownership, and sets the stage for us to reach out to the otherfamilies of our parish to ask for their participation too. Iknow that there is a lot of enthusiasm. We want many, manypeople to give something, so that they and we can truly saythat this work was done by all of us. I will be writing moreabout this in the weeks to come.

Last Sunday, I wrote to you about The Wedding ofthe Sea, a simple, new ceremony that will be held at BowlinePoint Town Park this evening at 7:00 PM right before theevening concert. We will gather with a statue of the BlessedMother at the new pier behind the swimming pool tocommemorate the feast of the Assumption. Town SupervisorHoward Phillips Jr. and I will perform the symbolic tossing ofthe ceremonial wreath. According to tradition, thiscommemorates an event in the life of Bishop Paul Barbo wholater became Pope Paul II when he was returning by shipfrom Venice to Cervia. He calmed the storm by prayer andthrowing his pastoral ring into the sea. This ceremonyrepresents the “wedding” of the town and the Hudson Rivercreated by God in proximity to each other and blessed by Hislove and protection. This is our first voyage! Hope you canjoin us, and stay for the concert at the bandstand rightafterwards.

ASSUMPTION DAY On August 15, Catholicpeople celebrate the assumption of the BlessedMother into heaven. Most years it is a holy dayof obligation when we should come to Mass tocelebrate together. But when it falls on

Saturday or Monday, the obligation is removed. Nevertheless,we invite everyone who wants to come to be with us at 9o’clock. Give honor to Our Lady by coming to Mass tomorrow.

THE PARISH CHOIR gives each member an opportunity todevelop vocally, to explore new musical ideas, and to be filledwith a special kind of grace that comes from sacred singing. The Holy Scriptures, as in psalm 145, exhort us to praise Godin music: “Let them praise his name in the dance; let them singpraises unto him with the timbrel and the harp. For the Lord takespleasure in the people; he will beautify the meek with salvation. Letthe saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds.”Have you considered auditioning for the choir? Call the parishoffice.

PRAYERS FOR DEPARTING COLLEGESTUDENTS By mid August, young peopleprepare to return to colleges throughout thecountry. They are on a mission to learn andto live out the values needed for life. Many

of these students will “go forth” from the parish with theblessing of family and friends to another year of educationalformation. We wish them well, we will miss them and lookforward to their homecoming at holiday time. Pray with ustoday and next week for these members of our parish who’ll beliving away from our community and those who will be joiningour community during this academic year.

TEENS CONNECTED BY CHRIST, TCC, is a youth ministryprogram that strives to integrate faith and fun. This isachieved through various social, spiritual, and apostolic eventswhich include weekly meetings, social events, overnightretreats and conferences, and service projects. The TCC program allowsyouth to take the knowledge gained in religious education andput it into action, using the world as a classroom. TCC will bestarting up again in September. We meet every Sundayevening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM in the school gym. Followingthe meeting, there are always refreshments. All teens ingrades 8 and older are invited to participate.

crisis situation, people need as many prayers as possible. CallCheryl at 429-4223 or e-mail [email protected]. “If thereis something that I can do for another person, then Lord, let me doit now and not defer it; for I shall not pass this way again.”

CATECHISTS NEEDED FOR FAITH FORMATION A catechist doesn’t know all the answers, doesn’t need a degree, enjoys being withchildren and sharing his or her faith. A catechist works as part of a team, is not a lecturer, knows how to listen, does fun activities, helps children and youth, celebrates his or her faith. A catechist plans each class beforehand using material provided, teaches oneclass for 90 minutes, attends meetings for training and updating. Please consider sharing your faith and your time and talents withthe children of St. Gregory. Speak with Father if you would like to learn more about this opportunity.

PLEASE MAKE A WILL AND REMEMBER YOUR PARISH Most of us own more than we realize. But no matter the sizeof an estate, if you want to provide for your surviving relatives and others, you need to have a will. If you die withoutmaking a will, you lose the ability to control the disposition of your assets. The law of the state will tell your familywhere your money and property goes. Furthermore, potential savings on income tax and estate tax, which can bearranged when preparing your will or estate plan, will be lost if there is no will. So, as a matter of prudence and

good care for your family, we urge everyone to make a will. And when you do that, after you have provided for your loved ones, wehope that you will designate a gift for the good works of St. Gregory Barbarigo Parish. Naming our parish as a charitable beneficiaryis simple. Your bequest can be a specific amount of money, property or stock. You can also name our parish as a contingencybeneficiary if someone named in your will is no longer living. To make a gift, simply include the following words in your will: “I give, devise, and bequeath to St. Gregory Barbarigo Roman Catholic Church of Garnerville, New York (here you write the amount being given) to beused for the needs of the Church.”

FALL BLOOD DRIVE conducted by NEW YORK BLOOD SERVICES will be held on Thursday, September 22 from 4:30 PM to 9:00 PM in theschool gym. Blood donations save lives. The life you save may be your own. The demand for blood is high. That means we have toget involved. You never know who will be in need of blood, or when the need may arise. It takes a special person who understandsthat making a blood donation is a life saving deed. Many in our own community need blood transfusions every day. Donating bloodis safe, quick and easy to do. With questions about donating, please call the parish office.

PRAYER SHAWL APOSTOLATE of St. Gregory Barbarigo offers a warm, soft, hand-knit or crocheted shawl or lap blanketto those who are sick in body or in spirit. Made by members and friends of the parish, the shawls are a way ofsurrounding the recipient with prayer and the loving care of their parish family. In addition to the prayers that are saidwhen the shawls are started and finished, all shawls will be accompanied by a loving message and will be blessed by

Father before being given away. They are available for parishioners who are ill or too infirm to come to church. They may also berequested for sick relatives or friends. You may call the parish office (947-1873) for more information. We are also in need of donatedskeins of yarn (eight ounce bundles, four ply) of cream champagne or pastel so that the blankets and shawls will be uniform. If you can, pleaseleave them on the table in the narthex with our thanks.

THANKS FOR THE THOUGHT Please come to Mass early enough not to disrupt. Leave late enough not to insult. Worship reverentlyenough not to distract. And dress proudly enough not to offend.

MASS “AFTER HOURS” Sunday worship must be part of each Catholic’s week. But sometimes there are circumstances that mayprevent you from worshiping with us at St. Gregory. Although we do prefer that you come to Mass in our own parish, when you can’t,please visit one of these eight churches that offers “after hours Masses” on Sunday evening right here in the county. Clip this out andkeep it handy for quick reference for these “last chance” Masses. If you remember to give God the glory, He will surely remember you.
