Abstract

“All design is always limited by its tools. The boundaries of what can be

represented within our design medium are the boundaries of our design

speculation, in effect the boundaries of our discipline. What cannot be

represented and operationalized within our design media remains outside the

designer’s realm of competency. Once this is understood what should strike us

with respect to our contemporary situation is not so much its limitations as the

extraordinary recent expansion of the boundaries of possible design

speculation, an expansion that continues year by year since. In contrast, before

the digital design revolution, the discipline’s design speculation was confined

within the very narrow confines of the system of ortho-graphic projections that

had not changed much in the preceding 500 years.”- Patrick Schumacher.

The research is about exploring parametric process in generating spatial

system. In this process grasshopper is used as a computational tool to apply

parametric principal on built environment. The study also looked at application

of grasshopper in generating elements of built environment. By using

parametric design , what is the method to create controlled built environment

in grasshopper. The possibilities to enhance building performance by

parametric modelling also been explored through this research.

Proposed methodology

The research will try to understand parametric process and it’s origin and

what it’s development in present time. The first of all , we will try to

understand fundamental principal of parametric process and what are the

computational tools through which parametric modelling can be done.

The study partly relies on the secondary sources of information such as

books, thesis documents and periodicals for the theoretical base; while the

case studies have been done by the author as first hand reference.

In order to create a background for understanding our research, different

building’s scale would be taken in order to understand how parametric

process effects elements of building .

To explore implementation of parametric process on design phase.

Role of grasshopper in generating parametric modelling.

Limitation

Parametric design is a vast subject, so research will restrict to only certain

scale of building to understand parametric process in depth.

Research has not been looked at parametric application in different field of

design, it will only restrict to architectural design process.
