10 New Year’s resolutions made for 2016. Do they sound

familiar?

By setting attainable objectives along with action steps on

how to reach them at a comfortable pace, you will set yourself up for another happy and healthy

year. Here are some suggestions to help you reach these four goals.

Lose weight/stay fit and healthy:

Wellness, walking, balance and exercise classes, attend a few each week to ease into making it part of

a regular routine. If you prefer to work out on your own, The Rockwood’s exercise rooms are the

the Shepherd senior center.

Enjoy life to the fullest:

Whether it means taking part in the many social, educational or recreational programs at The Rockwood or

taking advantage of courtesy transportation to get out and enjoy many of our community organized excursions,

you have plenty of feel-good activities to choose from.

Pick up a good romance novel or murder mystery from the well-stocked library in the Family Room and transport

yourself from the real world to a fictional land for an hour or two a day.

Challenge a neighbor or friend to a card or board game on one of the game nights. Or, even better yet, start a

weekly group that meets to socialize and play games.

Take a walk up to the barbershop, salon or spa and treat yourself. You deserve it – because looking good on the

outside also makes you feel good on the inside.

Spend more time with family:

Invite your loved ones over to enjoy some time in your home or spend some time walking the Webster Groves

community together.

Host a grandchild’s birthday party or son or daughter’s anniversary celebration. You can reserve the Family Room

for the day and bring food and drinks in to celebrate.

When you can’t be with family, take advantage of the many activities to spend time with friends. Have someone

over for tea, or a glass of wine. Socialize and build friendships.

Start a journal. One section for present, one for past. While your memories are still with you, write them down

before they are gone. Share those stories with family and friends. You may think your life is unimportant, but to

someone else, it may be reflection or hope. Writing on actual paper is becoming something of the past.

Technology is the new media. If you can’t or don’t want to be tech savvy, utilize paper to the fullest before it is

gone. Continued on next page…

A New Year Prayer for the Elderly

God, grant me the senility to forget the people

I never liked,

The good fortune to run into the ones that I do,

And the eyesight to tell the difference.

AMEN!!

~~~Resident Spotlight~~~
This month’s Resident Spotlight is on Betty Gerson. This petite, soft spoken woman comes to The Rockwood
after a lifetime of travels and adventures all starting with being born in a little town in Kentucky. She was
born a minister’s daughter, the middle child of nine. Betty always knew she was going to leave that town and
do big things. She was a beauty queen at the age of 15, (against her father’s wishes). Once Betty proved to
herself she could do it, she didn’t try again. Betty wanted to go to college like her sister, so at the age of 16
she took up a job as hostess at the local VFW to help earn money for her parents. After high school, she left
her hometown for a secretarial college in Portsmith, Ohio. It was far enough away that Betty felt her
independence but close enough to still come home to visit.
While Betty was away to school, she attended a New Year’s Eve party where she met Michael, a young
serviceman in the Army who was home for the holidays. It was love at first sight and they had a whirlwind
romance marrying only three months later. When Betty graduated she moved on to the army base with
Michael. She toured all around the world with him from base to base. They lived in Germany for a time.
Michael owned an awesome red Austin-Healy convertible and they would drive to Italy, Switzerland and all
around Europe. You should ask her about their run-in with the Gestapo-styled German police, never short of
adventure.
Years later, employment opportunities would bring them back to the US. Michael was an agrobiologist who
worked his way up to VP of the Bunge Co. He also worked at Sealtest where he invented the pill to
commercially create cottage cheese. They moved from city to city during his career successes. They finally
settled in St. Louis when Michael landed a job at Monsanto.
During their moves, Betty would spend her time raising their three boys. Once settled, Betty concentrated on
doing her best giving her boys all the opportunities to be successful in life. Her work paid off. Victor became a
minister, Michael now writes for the Washington Post and wrote speeches for President Bush, and
Christopher became a Shakespearian actor and writes for television programs.
Betty was always artistic and spiritual, but when she lived in Ohio, she would met a woman who would
change her life for the better. She helped introduce Betty to Christ in a miraculous way. A story worth
listening to. Betty uses that spiritual guiding and her painting as a sort of meditation. It releases an amazing
talent in her and her beautiful artwork shows it. Betty loves to be able to read a good mystery or binge
watching Netflix whenever she is not painting. Betty has loved living at The Rockwood. It has really allowed
her to live life in peace and harmony with herself, God and her art.
… Speak up when feeling not yourself. About 1 in 5 older adults suffers from depression or anxiety. Some possible signs of
depression can be lingering sadness, tiredness, loss of appetite or pleasure in doing things you once enjoyed. You may also
have difficulty sleeping, worry, irritability, and wanting to be alone. If you have any of these signs for more than two
weeks, talk to your healthcare provider and reach out to friends and family. Your Rockwood family will always be here for
you when you need us.
Talk about the hard stuff. This resolution is not fun, but it is the most important. While you are able, help set the standards
of care you desire should you become incapacitated later. Decide if you will designate a family member or hire a senior
care professional to be the primary caregiver. Talking about wills, along with other related issues, helps prepare everyone
for the inevitable. Discussing these things in advance ensures that your wishes are recorded and understood by all.
When all the fun of the day is over, it is time to rest. Older adults need less… continued on last page…
We will open the book, its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves.
The book is called Opportunity and the first chapter is called New Year’s Day. ~Edith Pierce
The Staff and Management wants to thank all of the Residents of The Rockwood for making 2016 a great
year. This coming year, we hope you create a story that you love. We hope you make something beautiful,
take great risks and dare yourself to do something new. Meet new people, play new games, come to new
events. Have conviction to see it all through. We hope you fall in love – with art, music, a person or God. We
hope you have the courage to take the weak things and amplify them until your life overflows with only the
good stuff. See the world and have an absolute passionate love affair with life! Let’s make 2017 one to
remember!
Look to your calendars for all the new things coming to The Rockwood this year!!
… sleep than younger people, right? Wrong! Older people need just as much - at least 7 to 8 hours a night.
Avoid daytime naps, which can keep you up in the evening. Find what works best for you and stay on that
routine. With the proper rest, we can all wake up and enjoy this list another day. What will you do tomorrow?
As we embark on another year full of promise and hope, we look forward to continuing the same high
standards and quality of service you have come to expect. No matter your goal, it is always better to reach it
with the support of family and or friends. Happy New Year from The Rockwood! Inspired by Capital Senior Management
