President’s Message
Finally In The
Midst Of Fall
Looking back to October, we started the month with a successful Octoberfest at the Roanoke Country Club. The German food was ample and seating plentiful. Overall a great time!
Justin McLeod, the Community Relations Coordinator at RCPS, personally thanked us profusely for the overwhelming response to last years “Operation Warm” where 138 brand new coats and vests were distributed to children in our community. Again, RSAC has dedicated 2019-20 to raising funds to purchase as many as 200 coats for the needy children attending schools in our communities. This can easily be done in several ways. First, a check made out to “Operation Warm” will be accepted at any RSAC function or general meeting. Secondly, just click onto this “hyperlink” to make a direct contribution. Remember, though we may not know them individually, they are our children and will soon become our community leaders. Help them while they learn about how kindness and caring can provide benefits lasting a lifetime.
Operation “GoFest” concluded on the 20th. It was the biggest ever in Roanoke. Thanks go out to all participants who shared their time and energies to make it successful once again
Now For The Signature Meeting Of The Year…
On November 14th our General meeting will be held at the recently remodeled Holiday Inn Valley View on Ordway Drive. This meeting will likely be remembered for the presentation Pete Kovacevic of Alpine Adventures will be sharing. He will surely inspire you to dream with his photos and videos of numerous exciting travel opportunities, as well as generate ideas for our upcoming trip survey in February-March. He has worked with us for several years now and provided us with many wonderful trips already, so be sure not to miss this hallmark event!
We wish everyone a warm and pleasant Fall Season and don’t forget to check our website for information about upcoming events and trips such as the November 12th Social at Smokey Bones in Valley View and our Holiday Party at Hidden Valley Country Club slated for Dec 4th.
Don Hanley, President

Event Summary:
KIAWAH ISLAND BEACH TRIP
Twenty of your fellow Ski
Club friends arrived safely
at Kiawah Island, SC on
September 23 for a great
time at the beach. The
weather was perfect too!
Several arrived earlier than
Monday to enjoy visiting
with family, friends, or to
just enjoy nearby
Charleston. Upon arrival,
we gathered to enjoy a happy hour and welcome dinner.
Activities started early the next day. Some walkers started early
to see the sunrise and take pictures, and the golfers also got off to
an early start. Some of us walked miles on the beach and started
gathering up dozens of starfish and unique shells along the edges
of wave pools. Bike riding was also popular again this year.
Many rode on the beach and a few got lost on their return
through the communities! Others enjoyed going into Charleston for sight-seeing and food.
We all enjoyed the Dolphin Excursion with
catered food and drinks. The dolphins were a
little more elusive this year. Maybe because of the
high tide. Later that evening, with standing room
only around the table, many enjoyed a riotous
game of Left, Right, Center.
Yes, we enjoyed
afternoons at
the community
pool or at the
beach sitting,
talking, reading, playing Bocce Ball,
swimming in the ocean, jumping over or
through the waves, fishing and more
walking. On the last day before
departure, many of us kayaked with the
guide and saw many oyster beds as the
tide dropped several feet during our
ride. For the first time, several members chartered a fishing boat and
caught some fish that we enjoyed later that evening at dinner. Speaking
of dinner, my friend, Suzie and I, enjoyed cooking dinner for the group.
Overall, everyone had a great time. Thanks to all for helping make this trip a success!

2019 – 2020 Trips
Snow is hitting the ground out west and as our weather turns here on the East Coast, we would like our remaining trip to Big Sky to sell out. So, if you want to go on an always successful Western Ski Trip please sign up as soon as possible so you won't be left home wishing you had gone. Just contact the trip leader, Steve Worman. From the looks of pictures posted on Facebook and corresponding comments our first South African Safari and Cape Town trip is a huge success. I expect our second trip leaving next week will be also. We are in the beginning phases of putting together ideas for our ski and adventure trip surveys for the 2021 season. Seems like a long time off but all the work has to be done in early 2020 in order to make trips the following season successful. And that is also why it is important that your membership be current so that you will be eligible for joining one of our trips at next Summer’s pre-trip party.
