Twenty-five games consecutively won, and the Warriors still have two more in their sights. The boys’ basket- ball team has been on what seems to be a never ending winning streak, which includes both Sectional and Regional titles! This weekend the Warriors will take a road trip to Huntington North High School to play Tipton High School. This season has been an emo- tional journey for the Warrior team filled with many ups and downs, but nonethe- less the season has always a single com- ponent that has been present the entire time…winning. This 2010-2011 Boys’ Basketball team is the first to go unde- feated an entire season since 1956, and this year’s Warriors shattered that record by going undefeated AND advancing this far into postseason. Even though this team has been through many ups and downs, they have always prevailed against any contro- versy or adversity. It was the late night of Wednesday February 23rd, and things for one Warrior were going to change. That night Ronnye Beamon Sr., the fa- ther of Ronnye Beamon Jr., passed away. It was an emotional blow to the entire team that many thought would cripple the young Beamon and the Bishop Noll team. Then, in a day and a half, the Warrior team would be taking on their long time rival Andrean. How- ever, in a stunning output of persever- ance, the Noll boys’ basketball team, including Ronnye, took on the rival Andrean and won, which gave the War- riors an undefeated season. Riding on an emotional high from the win, the Warriors went into Sectionals to first play Hanover, followed by a game against Lake Station. The Noll basketball team succeeded just like dur- ing the regular season to become the Sectional champions. After the game, the ceremonial cutting of the regional net brought the fans onto the court to witness and be part of this event. “Of course, any coach’s goal is to ad- vance to state,” Coach Drew Trost, Math teacher, was quoted saying during a postgame interview. All of the events of this season are all leading up to a singu- larity that is sure to not-disappoint. Mr. Michael McGrone, Vice Princi- pal of Bishop Noll said, “We have one of the greatest and most devoted cheer- ing sections.” The Bishop Noll super- fan section, led by Julio Casares and Wally Kasprzycki, is at every game in their costumes cheering their team onto a spirited victory. It seems like the cosmos are aligning and there are massive amounts of en- ergy in the air…all of these things are pushing the star-studded Warrior team to victory. The team is led by senior Adonis Filer who has had an average of 15+ points per game. Filer is the new- est edition to the Bishop Noll Basket- ball Team, being a first year Warrior; he has become a well-known person around Noll. Adonis leads the team in points, but Ronnye Beamon has been inching his way closer and closer to the lead. Beamon leaves everything on the court and does nothing but try. Even with these two powerhouse players, the whole team will have to give something greater than the 110% they put in now. What is the next stop for this high school boys’ basketball powerhouse? Well, that’s easy. The next point on their trip to Indy is Huntington North High School to play Tipton high school. This weekend will make or break the War- rior Basketball Team’s “stately” ambi- tions. Tipton’s star player Greg Dickey will not be playing due to a torn ACL. This turns, what was supposed to be an evenly matched game, into Bishop Noll being the heavy favorite. “I believe that we will win! I believe that we will win,” this is the chant and cheer that Bishop Noll screams at the start of every game, and thanks to this cheer Bishop Noll plays mind over mat- ter rather than let anything bring them down. So, Tipton better have called the calvary because the Warriors are rush- ing into the Huntington North Field House to claim the Semi-State title! The Tipton Blue Devils are currently ranked No. 3 in Class 2A and willbe playing the Warriors for semi-state. These Blue Devils have 24straight conference wins, but not a lot of luck at semi-state. After fourattempts, Tipton hopes to make it to state for the first time. However, the 1,000 point-scorer and coach’s son, Greg Dickey, willnot be playing this Saturday due to a torn ACL. Even though the BlueDevils will be playing without one of their best, they still have their 6-4sophomore, Mike Crawford. Coach Dickey still has faith in his hard-working team, who on Saturday defeated Bluffton 47- 43 and Carroll52-33. This begs the quesion: will they be able to defeat our unstop-pable Warriors?-Gabriella Romo

The Park Tudor Panthers from Indianapolis are currently at 24-2. Coachedby Ed Schilling, the Panthers have two dangerous players: juniors Kevin “Yogi”Ferrell, point guard, and Brendan Tannenbaum, forward. If it comes down to it, the Warriors need to beware of the Panthers’ dynamitethree-pointers, which just might make a close semi-state game when theytake on the Forest Park Rangers.-Angie Garcia

Forest Park from Ferdinand is the only other undefeated 2A team inthe state with record of 25-0. As the defending runners-up for the statechampionship, the Rangers lost to Wheeler. But they don’t wan to goaway empty-handed this year. Leading scorer Nathan Bromm is notorious for his buzzer-beater shotsand his ability to handle the ball well under pressure. The Rangers arealso really deft at blocking shots.-Sam Garcia

In the year of 1947, Catholic Central HighSchool changed its name to Bishop Noll inhonor of Bishop John Francis Noll of thediocese of Fort Wayne, Indiana. John Noll died in 1956—the very year theBishop Noll basketball team went unde-feated in their season. In a strange turn of events, this year’s semi-state game will be held in Huntington.Bishop John Noll uncannily resided at hisfirst parish—St. Mary’s—in Huntington, aswell as founded a national Catholic publi-cation company, Our Sunday Visitor, whichtoday, has a circulation of more than onemillion. Hopefully with a coincidence like this one,we can count on the sign that Bishop JohnNoll of Huntingon, Indiana, is on our side.

It is common knowledge that atany basketball game there are fiveplayers on the court for each team. However, at Bishop Noll there is a6th man: the super fans. Now if youguide your eyes towards the bot-tom, you begin to see random cos-tumes like a hot dog, ketchup, mus-tard, gorilla, banana and penguin. No, it isn’t Halloween. At BNI, it has become traditionfor some kids to dress up at games. It may not make sense to otherschools, but it is common at Noll. “Dressing up for games allowsme to express my massive amountof school spirit in a unique and ef-

The cheersare loud andorganized, and the kids get into it.It shows that they’re proud of theirschool,” Tarka says. No one can deny that the superfans are powerful, humorous, andcaptivating. The basketball playersthemselves even enjoy it. “I love them,” says RaymonteTucker, senior point guard. “That’smy favorite part of the game. After a close 40-38battle againstValparaiso HighSchool by theMunster Mustangsand a stunninglyended 51-41 victoryover Westview HighSchool by our veryown Bishop NollWarriors last week-end, both teams willbe heading to theIHSAA Semi-Statechampionships thisSaturday with stunning 25-0 sea-son records. For Noll, this is a major event initself, as the school has not had aboy’s basketball team with thiskind of record since 1956 when theWarriors went 20-1, losing theirfirst game of the year at sectionals. This year is also the first that Nollhas taken a Regional Champion-ship since 2001. Munster is cur-rently ranked #1 in the state ac-cording to the NWI Times news-paper, and had their most recent

Regionals vic-tory in 2009.Needless to say,it is a very, veryexciting year ofbasketball forboth teams. One might askthe question,“Why haven’tthese two pow-erhouses of bas-ketball teamscome up againsteach other this

year? The schools are even inneighboring cities!” Rumor has itthat the two coaches, Drew Trost, who is a math teacher at BNI, andMike Hackett of Munster, knewthat they each had a spectacularteam going and didn’t want to risktarnishing a possible undefeatedrun to state champion with aMunster loss to Noll or vice-versa.Although the Mustangs and War-riors never came up against eachother in the regular season, forwhatever reason, and won’t come

up against each other in thepost-season state champi-onship because of the classsystem, there is a highprobability that LakeCounty will have two un-defeated state championteams. Looking at the statsfor both the Warriors andthe Mustangs, both teamsare absolutely incredible But what if they playedagainst each other after the post-season tournament, regardless ofwhether either school goes on towin the title of state champion?Who would become known as thegreatest 2011 season boy’s basket-ball team in Lake County? Surelysuch an event would be absolutelypacked with attendees, the legend-ary BNI Superfans would be cheer-ing directly against the Munsterstudent section, and the game it-self would be an incredible one, with each team having an amazingsetup of players and what must bean excellent system for winninggames.

The region reputation ERIC RIVERAERIC RIVERAERIC RIVERAERIC RIVERAERIC RIVERA OPINION EDITOR

“Warm the tractors! We haveJesus!” The cheerful jeers ringingthroughout the crowd display as-pects of Bishop Noll that mark theschool as unique. Noll is a schoolfrom ‘The Region’, which is thenickname for the Northwest Indi-ana area. The urban reputation thatcomes with living so close to thecity of Chicago is carried by Noll.As the Warrior basketball programventures deeper into the IHSAAstate tournament, the distinctionsbetween Noll and the ‘typical In-diana high school’ become appar-ent. Being a Catholic institutionamong public schools is also a dis-tinctive feature of Bishop Noll. The faith-centered education thatis given at Noll is much differentthan that of other schools. Somefans may recall an incident earlierin the basketball season when anopposing fan section chanted “Goto church!” at the Noll fans. The

difference between Catholicschools like Noll and publicschools is essentially the school’smission, which is for God orstrictly for academics. The fact thatBishop Noll is a Catholic schoolcertainly causes it to stick out in astate that is predominantly Protes-tant. The diversity of the students atBishop Noll is a matchless qualitythat certainly grabs the attention ofless assorted schools. Noll’s stu-dent body is made up of a rare com-bination of thirds in which AfricanAmerican, Hispanic, and Cauca-sian make up equal parts of the stu-dent population. The diversity ofBishop Noll shapes the school’spersonality and character. In a statethat is notorious for being the cen-ter of racial tension, Noll is push-ing barriers and stereotypes to theirlimits. The Warriors definitelybring something different to thetable than what the Southern Hoo-

siers are used to. Bishop Noll’s proximity to oneof the major cities of the world cre-ates an ‘urban’ label for the school. The labels of ‘rural’ and ‘urban’tend to carry negative connota-tions. As a basketball team froman ‘urban’ setting, many may as-sume that the Warriors are a play-ground style team. The Southernhigh schools boast that the level ofplay is much higher there than thatof northern city schools. This isbecause of their attention to fun-damentals and shooting. Theschools at the 2A regional defi-nitely did not disappoint. Theylived up to their southern reputa-tion with their solid shooting andcrisp fundamentals. Tipton shouldbe a similar opponent. In order forthe Warriors to keep their perfectseason going, they must stay dis-ciplined, work on feeding the ballinside, and stay focused on de-fense. The shooters need to be

This could very easily happen; allwe need is your support to get itthere. By the time you read thisarticle, there will already be somesort of petition available onlinewhere you can voice your supportfor such a legendary game. stopped, and turnovers need to bekept at a minimum. As far as high schools go, BishopNoll represents a minority in thisstate tournament. This is not nec-essarily a bad thing. The differ-ences that define Bishop Noll willsoon be revealed as strengths. Thetemptation will surely arise to ruleoff questionable behavior as pos-sible prejudices against the uniquequalities of Bishop Noll. Whileunpreventable prejudices may oc-cur, the cold hard fact remains thatthis Noll team and its fans are themost talented and passionate groupof students the school has everseen. The sheer amount of prideand thirst for victory will beenough for the Warrior’s as theylook to clench a semi-state title.Regardless of whether or not Nollmeets the standard of the ‘typical’Indiana high school, I believe thatwe will win.

The true Region Rumble

Achieving something once isnotable, but doing it consistentlyis true greatness. As the clockticked away last Saturday in NorthJudson, there was a mutual feelingin the crowd. A feeling that the fu-ture of Bishop Noll Basketball fanswill have many more trips out tolittle Indiana towns with adverselyproportioned gyms. Since the ar-rival of Coach Drew Trost, Nollbasketball has hit a rapid growthspurt, reminiscent of Milos in theseventh grade, and with talent tobuild around in each grade the fu-ture looks very bright. The idea ofBishop Noll becoming a perennialpower in the Indiana basketballscene is not that far of a reach. Inthe big picture, we are relative new-comers to the scene. Our glorydays in the seventies are now fortyyears removed, but a new era hasdefinitely begun to hatch. Going grade by grade we seemuch proven talent to build upon.In the junior class, the grade withthe most immediate impact, yieldsmuch depth for next year’s season.

Ronnye Beamon, Jose Rosario, and John Dodson, who are alreadystarters will have an even largereffect, along with John Bock tak-ing a more prominent role. Thesophomore class features MilosKostic who is improving and grow-ing more and more with each game, though he still has much to learn, there is much time for that learn-ing. In the freshman class, LarryCrisler shows about as muchpromise as any freshman in thearea. Consistently making a hugedifference in every game with re-bounding and that trademarkeddouble pump, Crisler has given usmuch to talk about. Crisler andKostic have many upsides. Thesetwo in particular have coach Trostvery excited. “Milos and Larry will definitelybe a fantastic duo for many yearsto come. They both are very tal-ented,” said Trost. “If they stay onthe path they are on now the sky isthe limit, but early hype is alwaysan enemy as much as it can be afriend. As long as these two stay

down to earth and are willing to becoached, the program can see moreand more regionals on a consistentbasis.” Though the basketball team isnot losing much in quantity as faras seniors are concerned, they arelosing a great deal in quality. Ado-nis Filer has been the differencemaker in what seems like every biggame this season. Along with pointguard Raymonte Tucker and sharp-shooter Ross Poland, who haveboth coolly rose to occasion mul-tiple times to awaken the team withPoland's non-chalant three ballstroke or Tucker’s lockdown de-fense and smooth driving ability. According to Coach Trost, “Ourseniors have really showed theteam to never fear any opponentno matter how big of a school.” This approach will come inhandy in the upcoming years, as theWarrior schedule does not let up.The team is expecting another tripto the Region Rumble main eventand a trip to Indianapolis to takeon a team that is still to determined.

At the end of the day the betterteam is usually the one with thebetter players, but the road withbecoming the better player isthrough hard work and hours ofexhausting practice. The road willnot get easier, with Bowman Acad-emy entering our 2A class and oursectional. Coach Trost sees this ina very positive light. “It’ll make for some good gamesand one heck of a sectional, withWheeler, Bowman and us and LakeStation who is getting much bet-ter.” Trost seemed very optimisticabout the future at BNI. “Thingsare just too good now a days.
