The Writing Contest Just before the bell rang, Mrs. Rogers instructed the students to think about their pets because they would be writing descriptions of them tomorrow. They would be having a pet contest based on their writing. Harry turned to his friends, Rosa and Emma, and boasted, “My dogs are the best. I have three of them, and they can do a lot of tricks. I’ll have a lot to write about, and I’m certain that my dogs will win the contest.” “Well, I have four of the cutest hamsters. I love watching them run around all the toys in their cage. They make me laugh because they are so comical,” said a proud Rosa. Then Harry and Rosa both turned to Emma. “Well,” asked Rosa, “do you have any pets? What are you going to write about?” Emma looked down and then quietly said, “I have 34 pets.” “No way,” blurted Harry. “Nobody has 34 pets unless they live on a farm, and you live in our neighborhood. You’re just making that up, because you don’t have a pet. Mrs. Rogers said that if you don’t have a pet, you can write about one that you would like to have.” “I do have 34 pets,” Emma said defending herself, as she grabbed her backpack and started out the door. Then she turned to her two classmates and said, “If you’d like to see them, just come over.” When they arrived at Emma’s house, she led them back towards her room. “It’s pretty quiet in there for having 34 pets,” remarked Harry. “They’re very quiet pets,” said Emma as she opened the door and led Harry and Rosa over to a shelf. On the shelf was an incredible sight—34 beautifully painted rocks, and each one looked like an animal. “Wow,” whispered Rosa. “Did you paint these?” “Yes,” answered Emma, shyly picking up her favorite, a unicorn. “Look, there’s a tiger and a giraffe, and over there is an elephant with wings,” said an amazed Harry. “Emma, I didn’t know you were an artist! These creatures are fantastic! I have learned a valuable lesson about listening to others.” “Thanks, guys. I know my ‘pets’ are a bit unusual,” said Emma. “They sure are, and now I know why they are so quiet,” laughed Rosa. “Emma, I think you are going to win the writing contest tomorrow, especially if there is a ‘most creative pet.’ category!”

The Biggest Catch

(1) The boys heard the horn, grabbed their can of worms, and headed out the door. “Great day for fishing! Who’s going to catch the biggest fish today?” asked Uncle Rick as the boys slid into the back seat.

(2) Nathan, the older of the two brothers, immediately responded, “I’m going to catch the

biggest fish, and we’ll have fish for dinner tonight.”

(3) “What about you, Marcus?” asked Rick.

(4) “Well, I’m sure going to try,” answered Marcus, less sure of his abilities.

(5) “No, you won’t be able to top my fish,” said an eager Nathan, who was used to doing better than his brother. After all, he was three years older.

(6) Before long, the fishermen arrived at the creek. Rick helped the two boys bait their

hooks and cast their lines into the water. They stood on the muddy bank of the creek while a gentle current carried the river along at a slow, steady pace.

(7) After a while, Nathan got a bite and skillfully brought in a nice catfish. Over the next

couple of hours, both boys caught several fair-sized catfish, but none were the super-sized fish they were hoping to reel in. Then suddenly, Nathan got a bite, and he could tell that it was the “big one.” “I caught the biggest fish!” boasted Nathan as the fish lay on the bank. It was at least 12 inches long.

(8) “He’s a beauty,” said Rick as he took out the hook and put the fish in the bucket with the

others.

(9) “Yeah, he’s enormous,” said Marcus. “You did great, Nathan.”

(10) The boys dropped their lines back into the creek, and not ten minutes later, Marcus felt a strong tug on his line. He pulled and pulled and just knew he had a fish at least as big as the one Nathan caught. Then the fish appeared, but…it wasn’t a fish. It was a huge snapping turtle. “Oh, no!” said Marcus as the turtle struggled against the line. Marcus quickly backed away from the strange looking creature. \

(11) Rick started laughing as he went over to assist Marcus. Luckily, however, in the struggle, the turtle freed itself from the hook. It scrambled quickly back into the safety of the water. The boys laughed, and Rick said, “Boys, you each are going home with the “biggest” today. Nathan, you are taking home the biggest fish, and Marcus, you’re taking home the biggest ‘fish story’!”

The Rhinoceros: Thirty-five Million Years Old

The rhinoceros may not be the prettiest animal, but it is one of the biggest. It is the second largest land mammal. The elephant is the largest. Most rhinos have one horn; some have two. The rhino is the only land animal that can have just one horn. The pointed horn grows on the rhino’s snout. These horns are not made of bone, though. They are made of packed hair! Rhinos are usually shy. However, if they become angry, they can be fierce. They will put their heads down and charge at about 30 miles an hour. Rhinos have thick brown or gray skin. It is wrinkled and covered with very little hair. The rhino’s legs are short and each foot has three toes. There are five kinds of rhinos. The white and the black rhinos live in Africa. The Indian, the Sumatran, and the Javan rhinos live in Asia. The largest is the Indian rhino. It can weigh up to 8,800 pounds. The smallest is the Sumatran rhino. The one-horned Indian rhino has survived for 35 million years! Scientists find it amazing that it has survived that long. However, all rhinos are now endangered. At one point, the rhino was almost extinct. Rhinos have been over-hunted by humans for too many years. In some parts of the world, their horns are thought to cure illnesses. In other places, they are used as special handles for weapons. Many people will pay a lot of money for the horns. Some even pay as much as $30,000. Now it is illegal to hunt a rhino. There are also reserves to protect the animals and try to build up the numbers. Scientists are having some luck. It was thought at one point that there were only 200 Indian rhinos left. Now there are 2,400. Scientists hope that their numbers will continue to grow. Maybe the rhino will be around for another 35 million years.

Grizzly Bears

1 It grows over eight feet tall and weighs over 1,500 pounds! What is it? It is a grizzly bear.

Grizzly bears are also called Alaskan brown bears. Grizzlies are huge creatures! In fact, they are the largest meat-eating animals that live on land. Grizzly bears maintain their terrifying size by eating eighty to ninety pounds of food each day. Grizzlies are actually omnivores. They like to dine on fish, berries, leaves, and small animals.

2 Grizzlies are flat-footed, just like humans. Their heels rest on the ground. On the end of a

bear's toes are large claws. These claws are used to dig out small animals.

3 Fortunately, humans do not walk like bears. Bears have a clumsy looking walk because they move both legs on one side of the body forward at the same time. However, bears are not actually awkward in the way they move. They can even stand on their hind legs.

4 Bears should wear glasses, because they do not have good eyesight. They cannot hear

well either. They do, however, have a sharp sense of smell. They use those long noses of theirs to sniff out danger and food.

5 Hikers in western states, like Alaska, need to beware that they just may run into one of

these furry creatures in some dark, shady corner of the woods. Grizzlies usually run away when they see a human being, but sometimes they attack. It is helpful to know that grizzlies do not climb trees. So the next time you run into an unfriendly grizzly, head for the nearest tree!

28. Read the sentence below.

Grizzlies are omnivores.

What does the underlined word, omnivores, mean in this sentence? Ⓐ animals that eat meat only Ⓑ animals that eat plants only Ⓒ animals that eat meat and plants Ⓓ animals that eat fish only

29. Determine the main idea of the second paragraph? Ⓐ to provide the size of a grizzly Ⓑ to share the diet of a grizzly Ⓒ to describe the feet of a grizzly Ⓓ to explain how a grizzly moves
