Greetings! In 2009, Reno Contracting completed the 13-story Marriott Residence Inn at 5th and J Street in downtown San Diego for Hansji Hotels. Truly a showcase project and a great company success, this was an early step towards our present day relationships with Host Hotels & Resorts, Mark Allan and Associates and Pacifica. These relationships are visible in numerous projects at the San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina, the Coronado Island Marriott Resort & Spa, the Manchester Grand Hyatt, Hotel Indigo, the Hilton Bayside and beyond.

Today Reno has an expert team dedicated to this market. It demands incredibly precise and complete preconstruction planning and material procurement as well as exact estimating. The construction work is intensely scheduled and typically completed by working around the clock. The hotels of course, stay fully operational.

Bryan McCarthy has led the charge in our Hospitality Market. Highly skilled at estimating and project management, he has surrounded a team around him that excels.

People have always been our number one focus; in part our Mission Statement reads ….”We measure each project’s success by our ability to enhance our relationships with other team members.” We have great people; talented and committed to their work, their project and their company. It is no wonder that we have found great success in the hospitality and retail markets – it is all about people. From our people, we have our reputation, and from our reputation we have success.

At the AGC Installation Dinner in January 2014, Reno Contracting was awarded the Construction Industry Excellence Award. Previously we’ve received

General Building Contractor of the Year, but this was different. The trophy reads

“In Recognition of the High Level of Integrity and Ethics in Their Business Practice

and for going beyond the norm with their commitment to supporting the AGC, the

construction industry and the community.” Quite an honor to be voted for by our peers.

It speaks volumes of our company and our commitment to our core values.

The renovation of the 2nd Level South Tower

showcases over 30,000 square feet of Great Room, Restaurant, Bar and Kitchen space. This was a complete remodel of the existing Sea View Banquet room, South Tower kitchen and restaurant.

An elaborate, custom wood slat, wave and latticed ceiling extends throughout the lounge, bar, restaurant, private dining and banquet areas. All rough-in and cabling ran above a suspended gypsum ceiling located over the finished suspended wood ceiling, creating a floating ceiling within the space.

A climate controlled, custom wine room of over 400 SF makes the space exquisite and unique. The room includes racking for up to 2,000 bottles of wine of various sizes, custom refrigerators, and tables to accommodate private parties. Across from the wine

cellar is the new outdoor terrace that overlooks the Marina.

The building façade is a curtain wall system, extending from ground level up to the fourth floor and a portion of the exterior curtain wall was re-supported with a new HSS 12x12 craned in through open windows.

“Thousands of current and future students get to enjoy and use the facilities I build to better their lives and their contributions to the world.” Jason Bennett Project Superintendent

What are you most proud of on the project?I’m extremely proud that we continually meet and exceed the LEED requirements and quality standards for SDSU. The industry standards are shaping the way we build to ensure long lasting, beautiful functional spaces for current and future students. As a premier education campus, students and their parents expect a lot from SDSU. When students walk into the space and say ‘wow’ or post on social media regarding how awesome the new Starbucks and Aztec Market is - that’s pretty sweet.

Is working on a college campus different from other job sites?Definitely. A lot of time and effort goes into planning around the school seasons and class schedules. Students are curious by nature, so we got a lot of traffic throughout the day.

Tell me about some of your favorite features?I really get inspired seeing all the systems and trades work independently and then how it all ties together in the end. From fire safety to the painted open ceilings, how the electric and plumbing make

my morning espresso come to life and how the students can sit at a wall mounted table that won’t fall on them because of the backing we put in. Everything has a place and a purpose. I get to create spaces that will house or supply the boost needed for an all night brain storming session that develops into the next ShakeSmart, Volcom, or leads to the next Mayor or NFL great. It’s a great honor working with San Diego State University.

Bryan McCarthy, LEED AP BD+CReno employee since 2003

Is working on a hotel different from other job sites? Most definitely. These projects are some of the most challenging projects that I have taken on in my career. The hotel world is an extremely fast paced business. Events are booked out months to years in advance. Renovations are squeezed in between large bookings. If the area being renovated is reservable space, ie a meeting room or ballroom, they want you in and out as fast as possible. The motto is get the renovation done without being seen and without making any noise. My team and I love this challenge.

The Grand Hyatt is one of the busiest hotels in San Diego. There is a lot of coordination between with the Owner’s representative and hotel personnel.

What are you most proud of on this project? The incredible challenge to meet expectations of the client to have a high end renovation completed in almost unbelievable time lines. I’m proud to say we are hitting every mark.

In the hotel world, we talk shifts when we refer to

schedules in lieu of work days. We are currently working double-shift and triple-shift schedules to accomplish our work in the time frame given. With this fast-track schedule, transferring knowledge to the team in the field and keeping everyone up to date is definitely a challenge at times.

We have a huge team dedicated to the Manchester Grand Hyatt. There are six Project Superintendents, two Project Engineers, one Project Administrator, one Assistant Project Manager and me, a full-time Project Manager working on this. To put things in perspective, in 2007 I was part of only a four person team that built a 15-story high rise project in downtown San Diego. This team has come together fast and we are getting it done.

Tell me about this project and some of your favorite features? This project will be one of the largest and fastest completed renovations in our Client’s entire portfolio. We are

renovating 42,000 square feet in only eight weeks on a double-shift schedule. This includes rest rooms, a ballroom, foyer space, a 50’ high bay lobby and a 4-story escalator tower.

Phase 2 of this project consists of

renovating 115,000 square feet of ballroom, foyer, rest rooms, and meeting space in seven weeks. Phase 2

will be completed on a triple-shift schedule.

What challenges do you see on this project?Entirely the schedule. This project is not overly complicated with details. The double- and triple-shift schedules and the existing unknown conditions that arise are our biggest challenges. Extensive meetings were held with all subcontractors during preconstruction to make sure all parties involved were bought into the schedule.

We have daily meetings on site with most of the subcontractors to make sure things are on schedule. We also have an “all hands on deck” meeting before and after each phase of construction with all Field Foremen and Project Managers to ensure everyone is on the same page.

Basically, when we come across a condition, the attitude of the

team is “what does it take to get it done right as fast as possible?” We spent six months planning a 2-½ month project.

Any collaborative technology? Innovation? We are using tablets on site with Plan Grid to make sure we have instant access to the plans, submittals and RFI’s. This mobile technology saves valuable time by not having to go to the construction office to review details.

What do you see as the future of construction and the hospitality industry for San Diego?I’m not a fortune teller, however, as Reno has been extremely successful in the hotel renovation market over the past three years, we understand that there is now and will always be a large push on renovations to keep the hotels up to date with their competition to attract their clients. Fortunately, Reno has positioned themselves with one of the largest hotel owners and has been awarded multiple projects on some of

the busiest hotels in San Diego. This outstanding relationship and our ability to perform has given us other opportunities outside of San Diego as well which we are very proud of.
