The colors at the front of the church are now purple. We change these colors to mark the seasons of the church year. These seasons are designed to help us remember the story of Jesus’ life and his work for our salvaHon—the gospel. Purple, a color of royalty, marks the beginning of the story of the fulfillment of God’s kingdom in the coming of Jesus the King, which we celebrate in the season of Advent. Advent means “coming.” It is a four-‐week period before Christmas Day when the church remembers Jesus’ first coming and looks forward to his coming again to finish the work of redempHon he has begun.

Cover Art“Jesus Came to Go to War,” by Bob Church, 2014 In the Advent carol “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” we pray that Jesus will free his people from “Satan’s tyranny.” In this image, the triumph of Jesus over the devil’s works is symbolized by the glory that pushes back and breaks the weapons of war, which symbolize the cosmic conflict and destrucHon introduced into the world by demonic and human rebellion against God.

We confess our sinBob and Aleene Young (8:30 service)
The Cairns family: Mr. Zachary, Mrs. Whitney, Evangeline (9:45 service)
Leader: The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined. (Isaiah 9:2)
Choir: O come, thou Rod of Jesse, free thine own from Satan's tyranny. From depths of hell thy people save, and give them victory o'er the grave.Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
Leader: Our help is in the name of the Lord, our light.Let us confess our sin and sorrow to him with hope.
All: Father, we listen to the devil’s lies, and we join the devil’s work in sin. We reject your good and holy law as useless or evil,
and we rebel because we think you cannot or will not provide. And when our sin degrades and destroys,we flee your light to hide our guilt in the darkness. We are sorry, and we humbly repent. Lord, have mercy.
(silent prayers)
Leader: Lord, forgive us for believing the devil’s foolish lies.Fix our eyes firmly on Jesus, our champion, who has come to destroy the devil’s works,so that we can follow our King and walk in your light.
All (sing): “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” (next page)
We pray for God to help us worshipPastor: Christ is coming! All: He is coming indeed, and all the earth will see the salva:on of our God!
We greet one another with the peace of Christ

God declares our forgiveness Psalm 130:4, 7-8
Liturgist: If the Lord should hold our sins against us, no one could stand. But with the Lord there is forgiveness, that he may be feared. O Israel, hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is plenHful redempHon.And he will redeem you from all your sins.

Comfort, Comfort Text: Johann Olearius 1611-1684 (based on Isaiah 40:1-5) Chancel Choir Music: Louis Bourgeois 1551
arr. John Ferguson
“Comfort, comfort now my people;tell of peace!” so says our God. Comfort those who sit in darkness, mourning under sorrow's load. To God’s people now proclaimthat God’s pardon waits for them! Tell them that their war is over;God will reign in peace forever.
For the herald's voice is cryingin the desert far and near, calling us to true repentance, since the kingdom now is here. O that warning cry obey! Now prepare for God a way! Let the valleys rise to meet himand the hills bow down to greet him!
Straight shall be what long was crookedand the rougher places plain. Let your hearts be true and humbleas befits his holy reign. For the glory of the Lordnow on earth is shed abroad, and all flesh shall see the tokenthat God's word is never broken.
We praise God
